Camp Fever - Badlands Ministries
Camp Fever T here are many things I love about Badlands Ministries. I love our beautiful site that is nestled between the Little Missouri River and majestic buttes. I love being around faithful and dedicated people who love and serve this ministry. I love eager and energetic campers who come and experience God's love in unexpected ways. I love being a part of a ministry that grows faith and changes lives. And I will tell you one more thing I love about Badlands Ministries... it is contagious. After 13 years, I know that it is a place that grabs on to you and does not let go. Not only has that been true in my own life, but I have seen it happen frequently to others as well. From past campers like Jessie Urlacher (who would attend multiple weeks of camp every summer) to our Site Manager Bernie Kordonowy (who got involved with one project 5 years ago and has poured his heart and soul into this place ever since), the proof is there. There are both families that have been a part of this camp for generations and those who have only recently come to Fred Tooz at work in a scraper building the new road. New road under contruction to renovated lodge. discover it who cannot shake it. They are drawn to this place and ministry like a thirsting man to an oasis in the desert. The Holy Spirit moves people in surprising ways, and I am blessed to have a front row seat much of the time when it happens. Fred Tooz did not have a rich history with Badlands Ministries. Born on a ranch just west of Killdeer ND, he moved to Dickinson at the age of 14 after his father passed away at the young age of 44. Fred started working doing construction jobs after school, weekends, summers, and he never stopped. Right after high school, Fred started his construction business and a new family, and both have grown ever since. Today, Fred has been married 45 years and has 4 sons and 9 grandchildren. Fred also has a great appreciation for Badlands Ministries... he has caught "Camp Fever." In 2006, Tooz Construction won the bid to build our new bath house, dining hall, septic system, pump house, and drain field. It was at that time that Fred became acquainted with Badlands Ministries. Fred recalls, "From the onset of looking at the first set of drawings, I understood that it was going to be a huge undertaking to make this become a reality, and I wanted to make it happen." Tooz construction not only did an excellent job, but they donated (”Camp Fever” continued) some of the work in-kind. "Early on I saw this was a project that could mold so many lives, and I wanted to do what I could," said Fred. Fortunately for Badlands Ministries, Fred caught "Camp Fever" and was not just content with the septic system and buildings he built. These past few years he has been willing and able to do more at no charge, including working last month to resurface all our roads, build a new road to our renovated lodge, and build a new parking lot for the lodge. Fred spent over 200 hours on these projects, and his company logged in an additional 1,239 hours. Around 145 loads of scoria was hauled in (most donated by Allen Richards), and it took 8,400 yards of dirt to make the road and parking area. Fred did much of this work himself, and some of it was even a bit dangerous at times. As Fred tells it: "The amount of fill we needed to build a nice road required stripping dirt from the northeast butte benching from the top to the bottom. I had a couple of scraper slides that kind of elevated my blood pressure!" We are grateful for Fred Tooz and Tooz Construction, and for all those who have given and continue to give their time, talents, and resources to Badlands Ministries. Perhaps the reason Badlands Ministries is so contagious to so many is because it is but a small glimpse of what God has in store for all those he has saved through Christ by his grace and love. Who does not want to re-connect with God in fresh and meaningful ways? There is no shame in contracting "Camp Fever," and fortunately, there is no cure. Site Usage Update T hey are coming back! A family that had a reunion at camp in 2012 has just scheduled a date to return in 2014. How exciting that they want to return to our beautiful site. We also had two families requesting the site for their family’s Thanksgiving. We tried to accommodate both, but it just didn't work out. The Retreat Center has been and continues to be a busy place. It is so rewarding to be able to participate in the various activities that are taking place here. Of the 11 weddings, 4 of them used the retreat center to accommodate family and guests. One wedding was actually even held in our retreat center. Adult activities include ministry groups, a marriage retreat, a week long class sponsored by our synod, the Fish & Game 'Becoming an Outdoor Woman' Retreat, and a couple of men's retreats. Search and other youth groups continue to use the center as well. There were eight family reunions in 2013, and we already have six reunions and six weddings already scheduled for 2014! In March we will again host the regional Seven Day Adventists Men's Group. We will also be hosting a large Boy Scout camp out, a Lions youth camp, and a National Guard group next summer. We look forward to hosting the returning groups as well as those who are newcomers to the camp. The blessings continue to flow; one of our occasional guests volunteered to do some roofing! Thanks to him and family members we have a new roof on one of the cabins. Our fall Holiday Crafting Retreat found us missing Nathan but thoroughly enjoying our new program director, Christina. Everyone had a great time and some projects were even completed! The next crafting retreats are scheduled for February and April. Check the Badlands Ministries web calendar for exact dates. Badlands Ministries continues to inspire and bless me as well as our guests. The camp is truly a blessing as it continues to witness to the power and love of our Savior Jesus Christ in the lives of those who work and visit here. The Sander Family Mini-Reunion over the Thanksgiving Holiday had 11 kids under the age of 7! Page 2 Introducing Carter Blend Our New Part-time Marketing Director Badlands Ministries High Tech Face Lift C alling North Dakota home for my entire 24 years of existence, I was born in Minot and soon moved to Hettinger where I grew up and graduated high school. I returned to my birth place for a year and a half of college before transferring to The Art Institute's of Pittsburg - Online. I found myself planted back in southwest North Dakota while working on my degree in Graphic Design. It's at this point in my life that I received my first taste of the sweet nectar that is Badlands Ministries. Having never been a camper or involved with the camp, it wasn't long before I found my home beyond home. Working as summer staff for the past 4 years, this will be my first year working part time year round as the Marketing Director. I also work as the lead graphic designer for Sure Sign (a local Dickinson sign and graphics business). Helping other individuals grow in their faith and life is just one of my many passions. Music, art, and creativity plays a big role in my day-to-day activities. The camp has been such a blessing to me, giving me the opportunity and avenue to express these passions. Having been called to be the Marketing Director, I have the privilege to encourage others to come and take in the unforgettable and life changing experience that Badlands Ministries offers. T echnology has never blossomed more than it is in today's society. With advancements in web, social media, and the like, we have so much potential at our fingertips. Badlands Ministries website (badlandsministries.org) is going through a digital facelift. By January 2014, our plan is to have a new, improved, and more functional online presence for Badlands Ministries in place. The fun doesn't stop there! We will be branching out through social media avenues as well. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and vertical response emailing are just a few of the many tools that we will be putting to use in order to try to get the word out about the fun and exciting events that are taking place at camp. If you wish to stay up to date on everything that is Badlands Ministries, like our Facebook page, follow us on Twitter and Instagram, and sign up for our email updates. Fall Event Recap by Belinda Urlacher, Chairperson I t's hard to believe that another Fall Event has come and gone. I want to thank our committee members, as well as those who helped with the details or supplied some much needed new ideas. Thank you, Lola Fong, Sherry Ziemann, Patti Curran, LaRae Tschetter, Deb Rodne, and Donna Sandvik. We appreciate your help and know your dedication and commitment to the camp Lebanon Lutheran Ladies serving up lefse. aided our success. Special auction items this year included beautiful quilts, beef packages donated by Mrnak Ranch and Flying J Ranch, and artwork from local artists Chris Fulton, Marsha Lehmann, and Sarah Snavely. Other generous donations included gift packages, gift baskets, and services from the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation, Eagles Ridge Lodge, the AmericInn of Medora, Circle C Gallery & Gifts, Todd Old Time Photo Shoot, Hidden Java Springs, ND Cowboy Hall of Fame, Buffalo Gap Stitches, Cedar Canyon Spa, and Frankie's Westside Conoco. Many smaller items also went very well. Thank you to all the ladies who brought pies and made our pie auction, once again, a success, and everyone who contributed this year. All of the donations were beautiful and greatly appreciated. Attendance was down, but we still managed to raise quite a bit of money. Again, a big thank you to the crowd because items went well beyond what we expected! I would also like to give a big thanks to those who helped on Sunday; it could never have been done without your help. The crowd was great, the food was great, and the money raised was fantastic...a total of $31,329.56! We could not do what we do if it were not for all of you who “show up” for the event and contribute your time and money to help the camp this day and throughout the year. So on behalf of the Fall Event committee, I would like to say thank you for your continued support, both financially and with your time and talents. See you next year! Page 3 Summer Recap: Badlands Ministries- Helping Keep Faith Alive in 2013 T he summer camping season of 2013 saw yet another record number of campers. Badlands Ministries was blessed to minister to 1,322 total campers this year. Both returning and new campers visited us in Medora, and our staff took our Day Camp program to 15 communities over the course of the summer. All participants learned how to keep their faith alive by reading the Bible, praying, serving others, and worshiping God. They focused all these aspects around love, based on our theme verse which came from 1 Corinthians 16:14 saying “Let all you do be done in love.” Badlands Ministries also helped share the love by collecting school supplies for students in south western North Dakota. A HUGE thank you goes out to all of YOU for your contributions; we were able to deliver two car-loads of supplies to Consolidated in Dickinson, where the items were sorted and delivered to those who needed them the most! Two new, family-based programs were offered in 2013, Family Trailblazers and Grandparent Camp. We were blessed to have Grandparents, grandchildren, cousins, siblings, and parents all have an opportunity to spend time together and to spend time with us! As always, the summer staff made this all possible. The 25 young adults who spent countless hours sharing Christ's message and love to all they met are the individuals who make a real impact in our ministry. We couldn't do it without them and are blessed they have shared their faith, their time, and their amazing gifts with Badlands Ministries. Page 4 Site Update The Lodge T Above: Lodge back in use. Right: A Blue Grass band playing at the Love the Lodge party. hanks to Fred Tooz and Tooz Construction, we have a beautiful new road and parking lot so people can get to and use our beautiful renovated historic lodge! We will have an official celebration this spring, but we are already taking reservations to rent this unique building for weddings, family reunions, ministry retreats, and more. We are grateful to Duane Thorsteinson, his crew, and the many dedicated local volunteers who worked so hard to make this happen, including Kenny and Mary Abrahamson and Dave Curran. The "Love the Lodge" crew had a party to celebrate the lodge's completion this October that included some grilled burgers, a live blue grass band, and some dancing. It was wonderful to see new life in the old lodge once again! Cabin Renovations T hree of the cabins are finished on the inside complete with new windows, an ac/heating unit, new flooring, new vanities, an added shower in each, new furniture (queen bed, bunk bed, dresser, night stand, armoire, etc) and furnishings. These cabins are now as nice as the rooms in our retreat center! We are now finishing up the outside of these cabins with new siding and shingles. Thanks to Leonard Fischer of Amidon, we already have a new roof on New queen sized bed, one of the cabins. Our Site Manager Bernie will continue to work with staff and twin bunk bed (above), volunteers to finish the outside of these cabins as weather permits. We are vanity and shower (right) especially thankful for the volunteer help thus far of Steve Foss, Andy Prociw, added to each cabin. Duane Wamre, Jesse Urlacher, Mike Eichmiller, and Ken Hart. We have the funds in place to renovate the final two cabins and will begin that process this winter. If you are interested in volunteering, please call our Site Manager Bernie Kordonowy at 701-590-9227. Future Projects: T hanks to the generosity of the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church of Dickinson's Trust Fund, we have $25,000 pledged towards capital improvement projects. We are working hard to raise an additional $45,000 so that we can begin building a maintenance building as soon as possible. At this time, we have plans for other needed projects as well, but we are waiting for funding. These include relocating our high ropes course next to the lodge ($27,500), building play ground equipment for children ($18,000), and possibly converting our tent platforms into seasonal cabins. Work on these projects cannot begin until we have the money for them in advance, so fundraising efforts are underway. If you are able to help fund any of these projects, please call Director Brent Seaks at 701-290-6973. Left: Playground equipment like this is needed by the retreat center. Center: Our high ropes course needs to be moved out of the flood zone. Far right: Our current maintenance building was hit hard in the flood of 2011. Page 5 Recent Events Recap Public Christ Hike: August 7th The summer staff of 2013 did an excellent job of portraying Passion of Christ in our annual Public Christ hike. Nearly 20 people came out for the event to walk through the last week of Jesus' life on earth and to remember the forgiveness we have been granted through the sacrifice of our Savior and Lord. Family Day & Chuck Suchy Concert: August 11th Starting on a Friday evening, four families came out for Family Weekend and had the opportunity to sing songs, play games, worship, and roast s'mores. On Saturday, around 50 people gathered for a concert performance by Chuck Suchy! Families, friends, and new friends tapped their toes to the wonderful folk artist's guitar picking and accordion playing! The Mandan native charmed us all with his tunes and stories about life in North Dakota. Confirmation Retreat: October 5th-6h On a beautiful fall weekend, Confirmation students from around the area came out to the camp to dig deeper into the Ten Commandments, play Gaga ball, worship, and build faithful relationships with one another. We are grateful for this awesome crew as they helped the camp prepare for winter by moving benches into storage and picking up tree branches! Fall Festival: October 19th Pumpkin carving and pumpkin painting, wagon rides, caramel apples, and fall themed crafts were all a part of this delightful afternoon. It was a blast enjoying the sounds and smells of the season! Confirmation Youth Holiday Crafting Retreat: Nov. 22nd-24th The first signs of wintery snow and cold sure didn't stop 15 creative ladies from completing their projects! Like a crafting family reunion, they came together to quilt, scrapbook, knit, crochet, eat delicious food, and receive massages from the ladies at Cedar Canyon Spa. It was a perfect weekend for creative spirits to unite and faith filled conversations to be had. It is a good thing events like this happen three times a year! Look for upcoming crafting retreats if this sounds like a good time to you! Holiday Baking Retreat: December 6th – 8th Ladies came together this weekend to spend some time in warm kitchens and in warm conversation. It was a weekend full of baking holiday treats, relaxation, good fun and great fellowship! Fall Festival Page 6 Advent-ure Retreat: December 7th An energetic group of youth, 3rd through 6th grade, came out to the camp to learn more about the season of Advent. They played games, had a Bible Study, made ornaments, and went on an Adventure Scavenger Hunt around camp. It was sure chilly, but the journey to Bethlehem is ALWAYS worth it! Women of the November Crafting Retreat. Christmas Choir and Hymn Sing: December 8th Another successful, annual Christmas event! Choirs and ensembles from the area shared a gift of music, and all participants snacked on delicious baked goods and joined voices in the hymn sing. The afternoon of music was a great way to prepare our hearts for the true reason of the season! Upcoming Events Winter Crafting Retreat: February 20th-24th Do you enjoy crafting? Volunteer 2013 Board of Directors I n addition to being generous financial supporters of the camp, Solveig Swendseid and her husband Frank Porter have spent some time the past three summers living at camp and working as volunteers. We really appreciate their ongoing support, hard work, and dedication to Badlands Ministries. Might you consider sharing your gifts and talents with us as well? We always could use an extra hand, and we have many projects around the site where volunteer assistance is needed. Please call us at 701-623-4332 if you would like more information about serving as a volunteer for Badlands Ministries. Frank and Solveig touching up the rocking chairs. Fall Work Day volunteers from St. John Page 8 Serve B adlands Ministries has a 12 person Board of Directors, made up of volunteers from our member congregations. Our board meets 6 times each year to take care of the business of overseeing and managing the camp. In order to carry our mission forward, we also rely on teams of volunteers willing to serve to help us is six key areas: Financial Oversight, Fiscal Development, Facilities, Program, Personnel & Board Development, and Communication & Outreach. Each of these ministry teams meets a few times a year to assist staff in reaching the goals of the Strategic Plan. We are always looking for new folks to serve on these ministry teams and our board. Would you be willing to use your gifts and serve? If so, please contact the camp office at 701623-4332. Don't be that guy in the Bible that buries his talent in the dirt... Jesus does not speak too favorably about that guy. A special thanks to Todd Otto and Rick Tabert of Dickinson for just completing their second term on the Badlands Ministries Board of Directors. They are both served with great dedication and enthusiasm and will be missed. Our new board members for 2014 include Roger Gartner of Dickinson, retired Pastor Jerry Erickson of Amidon, and Angie Shilman of Dickinson. Support Badlands Ministries through Thrivent Thrivent Choice Dollars and Community Action Teams I n case you did not know, Thrivent Financial is a not-forprofit company that offers financial services to all people. It is a big company that helps folks with their retirement planning, insurance needs, and it also supports all kinds of charitable institutions including Badlands Ministries. We have been blessed to receive funding from Thrivent Financial over the past several years through many different programs. Last year, we received $17,000 from Thrivent Financial, including $12,971 through the Thrivent Choice Program. While we are greatly appreciative to Thrivent Financial for providing people with options that will benefit Badlands Ministries, the funding does not happen without you! Right now, there are two programs available to Thrivent members that can benefit Badlands Ministries: Community Action Teams and Thrivent Choice Program. Here's how to do it by phone: 1. Call 1-800-THRIVENT (1-800-847-4836) and state "Thrivent Choice." 2. State Choice Dollars when prompted. 3. Press 1 to direct Choice Dollars. 4. Enter or speak your social security number or Thrivent ID number. 5. Your call will then be transferred to an operator for completion. 6.Our Organization Name is listed as: “Badlands Ministries" Here's how to do it online: 1. Log on to www.thrivent.com 2. Sign in with your username and password or register for an account. 3. Once you have registered and signed in, select the “Direct Choice Dollars” button for Thrivent Choice in the right hand side. 4. In the middle of the next page, type in “Badlands Ministries” in the “Organization Name” box, leave “City” blank, and click search. 5. Next to our name (listed as Badlands Ministries), click the “Direct Now” button. You will be able to assign all or part of your choice dollars to the camp. 6. Click the “submit” button and your Thrivent Choice Dollars will be sent to Badlands Ministries. Community Action Teams As of now, our area is a trial area for new Community Action Teams. Each year every Thrivent Member can apply online for funding for two community action projects. If approved, Thrivent will send that member up to $250 to be used for that project. This replaces the current model in which Thrivent area chapters designate funds. Badlands Ministries holds several work days, events, and fund raisers that would qualify for such funds. If you are a Thrivent Member and interested in requesting funds online to help with one of these, please contact the camp. Thrivent Choice Program Thrivent Choice lets you recommend where some of Thrivent 's charitable outreach funds go by directing Choice Dollars. Eligible members are designated Choice Dollars, based on insurance premiums, contract values, and Thrivent Financial volunteer leadership. Choice Dollars can be directed to qualifying organizations you prefer nationwide such as Badlands Ministries or even your local congregation. Members can no longer make a choice to automatically direct their Choice Dollars to the same organization every year. Instead, members must select where they want their Choice Dollars to go each and every year. If no choice is selected, the Choice Dollars are lost. Recurring Thrivent Dollar designation is no longer an option. In order for Badlands Ministries to receive your Thrivent Choice Dollars, you'll need to make the designation each and every year. We'll help you remember to do so. Thanks! Please call the camp office at 701-623-4332 with any questions. We are grateful for your support! But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is the Messiah, the Christ the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.’ And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favours!’ Luke 2:10-14 Page 9 14th Annual Badlands Ministries Golf Tournament Thank you to our sponsors; without your support this event would not have been possible! $1,000-$600 Sponsors: Edward Schwartz Construction, Inc- New England Eyewear Concepts- Dickinson First State Bank- Beach, Medora, Golva Beach Fisher Industries- Dickinson Great Plains National Bank- Belfield MBI Energy Services- Belfield Parkway Ford, Lincoln, Mercury- Dickinson Pump Systems- Dickinson Roger Myers- Bismarck Tooz Construction- Dickinson $300 Sponsors: American Bank Center- Dickinson Bosch Lumber- Dickinson Brosz Engineering,Inc- Bowman Clinic Pharmacy, Inc. & Medicine Shoppe- Dickinson Dakota Western Bank- Bowman Edward Jones- Dickinson Kadrmas Lee & Jackson,Inc- Dickinson Kohler Communcations- Dickinson Kulseth-Krebsbach Funeral Home- Bowman Ladbury Funeral Service- Dickinson Lutheran Trust- Fergus Falls Midstate Telephone- Stanley Morland Financial Services- Bowman Northern Bottling Co. We are grateful for these generous gifts and wish to thank all those in advance who have graciously included Badlands Ministries in their estate planning. Trust Fund B adlands Ministries has both a Qualified Endowment Fund ($10,000) and a new Badlands Ministries Trust Fund ($20,000) in place. Gifts to these trust funds help ensure the future of our important ministry. We will work hard to grow these funds in the years ahead. Giving Clubs T o help promote giving towards Badlands Ministries on a regular basis, we have modified and reestablished the Pathfinder's Giving Club and have also added a Little Missouri Society Giving Club. The Pathfinder Club starts at $250 per year annually and has different giving levels up to $2,500. The Little Missouri Society begins at $2,500 and goes up from there. We have new brochures available that explain each giving club in greater detail. If you have not received one yet in the mail and would like to, please let us know. We hope you will consider joining one of these clubs to provide needed consistent financial support for our ministry.
