There are only two drivers with more career season
championships than Jimmie Johnson and both are
legends. One dominated NASCAR during his
career and helped NASCAR become one of the most
popular fan sports ever. The other, whether you loved
him or hated him, epitomized the hard driving, hardworking, tough minded driver fans can relate to. Both
are sports legends, forever etched into NASCAR and
sports history because they were big time winners.
Each won 7 NASCAR season championships, tied
for most ever. Each became the face of the sport
they so fearlessly competed in and, at times,
dominated.

I’m sure even the most average of NASCAR fans know by now that I must be

The problem is

some degree. But Johnson who is only 38 seems to be
on the verge of making his own mark. He has won 6 of
the last 8 NASCAR Season Championships and almost
won a seventh only losing to Brad Koselowski in the last
race of the 2012 season, but perhaps his biggest accomplishment was winning 5 in a row from 2006-10.
No one in NASCAR, or any team or individual in any
sport, dominated as thoroughly as Johnson during
that time period, and yet most people don’t even
remember it.
In 2013 Johnson was at his trademark consistent best.
Although Matt Kenseth made the 2013 race championship a close one, Johnson put together another year
most drivers could only dream of winning 6 times in
2013, Daytona for the second time in his career and
finishing in the Top 10 24 times. Perhaps more impressive is that he only failed to finish one time all season.
This type of consistency helped carry Johnson to his 6th
NASCAR Season Championship, a year in which he also
passed 400 career races and captured his 66th Race
win. Giving him a good shot at his age to end up third all
time behind Petty (200) and David Pearson (105). His
6 season championships also brings him within one of
both Petty and Earnhardt and a potential 3 way tie with
7. Johnson, like Petty and Earnhardt, has dominated
NASCAR, his 5 consecutive Season Championships a
testament to that yet even with all these accomplishments remains unheralded.
History shows though that dominating your sport
doesn’t always manifest popularity but sometimes
disdain. Earnhardt Sr. was a good example as competing driver fans loved to hate him. It wasn’t until his
untimely death that he was fully appreciate for what N

But the story’s
not over, it may

If Johnson can
just race competitively 5 or 6 more

greatest NASCAR driver of all-time. Although the gap
between Johnson and the rest of the field appears to
be closing there’s no reason to think he still can’t win

Racing Season Preview
As we look forward to the 2014 NASCAR races, it might
be wise to look back at the big stories of 2013 that
may impact this season. There were a number of big
headlines from 2013 and like most years it all began at
Daytona.
Jimmie Johnson kicked off the year with his second
career win at the Daytona 500. He was overshadowed
by newcomer Danica Patrick who became the first
woman on the pole, to lead laps at Daytona, and to
finish as high as eighth place.
The season contained a number of race accidents that
resulted in drivers missing opportunities to compete.
Denny Hamlin and Brian Vickers both missed races. One
of the most serious wrecks of the year happened to Tony
Stewart on August 5th which resulted in a broken tibia
and fibula for Stewart. Stewart would miss the rest of his
2013 season but has aggressively rehabilitated in hopes
of returning in time for Daytona in February 2014.
And it wouldn’t be real life or NASCAR without a little
controversy or scandal. Clint Bowyer’s spin-out that
resulted in a caution flag being waved on September
7th at Richmond set off a series of embarrassing
moves that NASCAR deemed illegal. NASCAR eventually reversed and changed a number of final spots in
the Chase relative to how that Richmond race had
impacted final points totals. As a result, Martin Truex
lost his wildcard spot in the Chase and Ryan Neuman
and Jeff Gordon were added.
Jimmie Johnson put together another phenomenal
year winning his second Daytona 500, his 6th season
championship and capturing his 400th win. Johnson,
who his obviously racing at an extremely high level,
has seen his competition get better as they edge a
little closer to his standard of racing. Johnson lost to
Brad Keslowski in the last race 2012 and narrowly
defeated Matt Kenseth this past year has been near
the top every year the last 8 years—a level of consistency that is unmatched by any driver today.
Danika Patrick became the
first female NASCAR driver
to win a NASCAR Sprint
Cup Series pole
NASCAR has plenty of storylines heading into 2014, but
none perhaps that is having a bigger impact than multidriver teams. The assembly of a talented group of drivers who help one another before and during races can
be a huge advantage for that team and can be a big
disadvantage for single driver teams. The best example
is the Hendrick Motorsports team consisting of Dale Jr,
Johnson,

Accidents and tragedies unfortunately are a part of
this dangerous sport and 2013 was no different . Beginning at Daytona in February, Kyle Larson’s car went
airborne, with his car striking a crossover gate and
pieces of his car flying into the grandstand. Several
fans were injured, luckily, no one was killed.
The racing world wasn’t as lucky on June 12th at
Bridgeport, NJ as popular driver Jason Leffler was
killed. Leffler’s 410 Sprint car’s front suspension

These men helped turn a controversial, underground
industry into arguably the biggest fan participation
sport ever.
So as an old NASCAR fan and one who attended his
first NASCAR race ever at North Wilkesboro Motor
Speedway it saddens me to seethose memories begin
to fade. Hopefully someone will see the unequaled
heritage the old track contains and will do something
tomaintain and preserve it. Few tracks or regions
have the roots and history of NASCAR so heavily
imbedded in it’s past than North Wilkesboro Motor
Speedway or that region of North Carolina.
Wouldn’t it be great if it was somehow turned into
a monument to the sport. A museum that tells of
NASCAR’S early beginning and the men and drivers who would make it what it is today. How about a
driving school or NASCAR mechanic school. Perhaps
someone will save the day but regardless let us never
forget that on some dirt road in the foothills of North
Carolina over 70 years ago some brave men were
hauling whiskey somewhere just as fast as they could
go. Never knowing, that years later, their hard driving lifestyle and pushing their car to the limit would
become a sport.

For the sixth straight year, Earnhardt ranks near the top

Under contract with Hendrick Motorsports until at least

A close second to Earnhardt, is Jimmie Johnson, who
