2 WISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, December 30, 2010 Faith, family and philosophy in Sin City By BRANDON EVANS “He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul; He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For thou art with me ...” — Psalm 23, 2-4 The quiet of the pasture, prairie and plain surrounds the Wise County rodeo cowboy. But in Las Vegas, the casinos are filled with many times more people than the entire populations of the hometowns where most of the cowboys at the 2010 National Finals Rodeo hailed from. Windowless, the massive casinos are shielded from the turning of the earth, the silent shifting of night to day. The pinball-like, hammering sounds of countless glowing slot machines echo around dim halls. The steady hum of crowds mingles with COWBOY ZEN — Trevor Brazile’s laid-back approach to winning, along with faith and family, helped him achieve his best year ever at the National Finals Rodeo. By BRANDON EVANS Despite battling two bands of brothers in two different events, Decatur’s Trevor Brazile managed to make history at the 2010 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo Dec. 2-11 in Las Vegas. Members of both brotherly trios gave Brazile a fight until the end of the 10day rodeo. In team roping, Brazile and partner Patrick Smith had to compete with Clay, Travis and Brady Tryan of Montana. Until the last day of the rodeo, Brazile and Smith trailed Clay Tryan and About this section The 2010 National Finals Rodeo Dec. 2-11 in Las Vegas featured four Wise County cowboys. But on the tenth night, Brazile and Smith moved into first. It was Brazile’s first world title in team roping. “My family knows how hard I worked at that,” Brazile said of the header buckle. “I’ve learned it before, but I learned it again. Hard work pays off.” In tie-down roping, Brazile competed against his neighbors, a trio of brothers from Decatur: Tuf, Clif and Clint Cooper. “We’re all on the same team,” Brazile said of the familial rivalry. Back in Decatur, the Coopers and Trevor Brazile train horses or care for cattle as an orange orb drops off the edge of the world. They head for house and family as the setting sun spills passionate colors onto threads of clouds. The cowboy relies on nature, exposed to wideopen spaces and the eyes of God, friends and family. Vegas relies on secrets. Stories from teaming sidewalks lie hidden in shadows from hotels tall as the Tower of Babel. Despite being transplanted to the heart of Sin City, Decatur’s Tuf Cooper, 20, found solace and strengthened faith. “One of my favorite times of year is the NFR because it brings me closer to God,” Tuf said. “During FAMILY FIRST — Trevor Brazile’s 2-year-old son Treston hops along the stage at South Point in Las Vegas during a buckle presentation after Brazile won a round. He finished second in the world, right on the heels of Brazile. Tuf pushed for the world title until the very end, winning two rounds during the rodeo. “When I won the team roping — and that was something they weren’t expecting me to do at all — that put even more pressure on me in the calf roping,” Brazile said. “It was awkward because the pressure kept mounting. It didn’t release.” Brazile’s storied season was one of history and records for the NFR and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). Continued on page 9 Congratulations Trevor Brazile! You get to witness so many wonderful things going on. “I’m competing for a world title. And I give all the glory to God. He is in control.” The influence of faith on Tuf is obvious. Jesus is stitched into the collar of all the shirts he wears in the arena. The phrase “I am second” is stitched onto the cuffs. And during his 15 days in Vegas, he stayed in a non-gambling, alcohol-free hotel. Small-town roots, family and faith kept Tuf composed and level-headed in the face of two weeks of epic stardom among the nation’s biggest rodeo fans in Las Vegas. The passion of the diehard rodeo fans rivals that of geeks in love with Star Trek. “One of my favorite things about living in Decatur is when I go home I just go back to being the little brother,” Tuf said. “I get to spend time out at the ranch with my family.” Messenger photo by Joe Duty Continued on page 10 COOPER STARS — Cliff, Clint and Tuf Cooper pose for a photograph during an autograph session at MGM Grand on Thursday, Dec. 9. Brazile became the first rodeo cowboy to win multiple triple crowns in more than 50 years and only the third in rodeo history. He sealed the deal by winning world titles in team roping, tie-down roping and the all-around. In 2007, he took home a triple crown with world titles in all-around, tie-down roping and steer roping. It was his eighth all-around title, a record. He tied Ty Murray with seven last year. “Eight is really special, just the fashion we got it done,” he said. “It wasn’t a struggle. I don’t know where you go from here, but winning never gets old.” TYING DOWN HISTORY — Trevor Brazile earned a world title in tie-down roping on his way to win his second triple crown. It was the first time he won the average in calf roping and caught a calf in every round. Continued on page 11 CONGRATULATES you on a Spectacular Achievement DECATUR 1706 S. SUBURBAN COWBOY — Trevor Brazile day trained for the nightly rounds of NFR action at a private arena near the edge of the city. Messenger photo by Joe Duty Continued from page 8 The record-breaking rodeo champion Trevor Brazile, 34, of Decatur, also depends on faith to guide him. His family and steady Christian faith have given him an almost Zen-like philosophy — Far East meets Wild West. “The biggest thing I’ve learned is what I do in Vegas is not the end of the world,” Brazile said while relaxing calmly with his family just hours before another big night at the finals. “I used to come out here and beat myself up every night I did something wrong,” Brazile said. “I used to think I had to do everything in the first few nights. But I’ve realized I don’t have to do anything. “There are not that many things we have to do. I just come out here and give it my best every night until Saturday.” His laid-back philosophy led him to an eighth all-around world title and a second triple crown in four years, along with record-setting earnings. After the blinking lights, fame and nightly winnings of Las Vegas, Brazile and the three Cooper brothers are back in the pristine pastures and slow running, shallow streams of Wise County, soaking up the sun and earth. While the glamor and glitz of Vegas are only temporary, family, faith and home last a lifetime for these Wise County Cowboys.
