Christmas holiday season.

Gem & Gold Panning
Try your hand at finding Cripple
Creek turquoise, topaz and other
gems as well as real gold. The
museum hosts panning thru Labor
Day and panning for real gold over
Gold Rush Days the third weekend
in July.
The year was another time of progress at the Victor Lowell Thomas
Museum. Some of the successes with your support and volunteer help
include:
We had record season increasing our visitor numbers from
9609 in 2014 to 10,345 through November, and we had another
great summer of CC&V Mine tours. This is the first time the
museum visitor numbers have reached 10,000 in one season!
Work on a State Historic Fund Grant was completed with
restoration on the exterior doors, repair of the east wall and window
stonework. The work on this project began in the fall of 2013.
We were busy raising the funds needed to install heat in the
museum. Grants were received from the Gates Family Foundation,
El Pomar Foundation, and Anschutz Family Foundation. Bids are
being awarded for that project and we will be working on that
project during the winter of 2016.
A State Historic Fund Grant was received that pays for the
engineering documents for interior restoration – layouts for
plumbing, heat, electrical, and refinishing floors and ceilings. Those
documents are 99% complete.
We continue to seek funding for the interior restoration – addition
of restrooms and
upgraded power
as well as a few
miscellaneous,
exterior finishes.
We will be holding
several fundraisers
throughout the
year to assist with
these needs.
We held several
fundraisers and
events: Our third
Steampunk event
was a huge success with a paranormal event, historic downtown
van tours thanks to CC&V, and a presentation by Chris Thompson
on the history of steam power; Our third annual Sunnyside
Cemetery Tour was well attended. And thanks to all who made our
Stories at the Strong event a huge success! Storytellers (picture
above) shared their tales with over 50 attendees. We held a book
signing for Jan MacKell during VCTA weekend. We also

participated in the Citywide Yard Sale in May and Gem and Mineral
Show in June. Thanks to Jim and Sarah Watson for letting us use
the Gold Coin Club and Strong Mine for our events!
We continued to work with the Colorado Springs Convention &
Visitor’s Bureau and regional museums on cooperative marketing,
as well as group tour operators for bus tours.
Continued keep the museum open seven days a week all summer.
This year Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company again
donated the funds for staffing and marketing the mine tours - a
huge thanks to CC&V!. We also opened all weekends from
Thanksgiving to Christmas and are planning more special hours for
2016.
Continued a window challenge to raise funds to restore the
windows in the museum; 16 windows have been funded thanks to
several donors. There are two windows left eligible for restoration
and recognition by donors.
We also participated in Colorado Gives Day in December.
Exhibits and Programming
Received donations of photos and artifacts from several
individuals with family ties to Victor, including a donation of several
hundred books and transcripts of Lowell Thomas’s broadcast;
thanks to the University of Denver Sturm Law School.
Improved our contribution to the community by drawing visitors
to Victor through our marketing efforts, providing for visitor
experiences to compliment our local businesses and give visitors a
reason to stay and explore Victor, the museum, Gold Belt Byway
and Trails of Gold.
Curatorial, Inventory and Gift Shop
Continued work toward an inventory of all artifacts in the
collection.
Added several new lines to our gift shop, and held a preview
event for opening weekend.
Decorated the windows for Christmas, thanks to the enormous
village Jeff and Mona Campbell loaned us.
The Hunter Ore Car was repainted
and located in the mining yard at
the museum. Thanks to the
Hunters for the donation and to
Joe Harris for the artwork!
