Bucs In The Postseason
* The Bucs qualfied for the 1996 NCAA I-AA Playoffs after
finishing the regular season 9-2 overall and 7-1 in the Southern Conference.
In the first round, eighth-ranked ETSU defeated the
14th-ranked Villanova Wildcats, 35-29, in Johnson City, Tenn.
Senior quarterback Greg Ryan was 20-37 for 237 yards and
two touchdowns.
In the quarterfinal round, #2 Montana defeated the Bucs
44-14 despite Ryan’s 313 passing yards and two touchdowns.
Bowl Winner
The Bucs traveled to snowy Montana in 1996 to take on the
top-seeded Grizzlies in the quarterfinals of the I-AA Playoffs.
Todd Wells
* On Dec. 13, 1969, ETSU won the Grantland Rice Bowl,
34-14, against Terry Bradshaw-led Louisiana Tech in Baton
Rouge, La. The win sealed an undefeated 10-0-1 season
for head coach John Robert Bell.

The Bucs have been led by incredible individual talent. During the Paul Hamilton era, the Bucs have
set numerous team and individual records. Hamilton has coached the Southern Conference’s Total Offense
Leader (Todd Wells) and ETSU’s all-time leading rusher (Brandon Walker), receiver (Adigun), scoring leader
(Walker) and tackler (Mario Hankerson).

East Tennessee State has seen
its name in the national polls on
several occasions.
Street and Smith’s had the
Bucs ranked eighth in its 2002
preseason poll, the second highest-ranked team in the SoCon. In
2001 ETSU received votes after its
upset of No. 1 Georgia Southern.
The Bucs received votes for a
national ranking most of the 2000
season and were ranked in the
Top 25 for seven weeks during the
1999 campaign.
ETSU finished the 1997 season ranked #7 in the nation.

Quarterback Todd Wells set ETSU’s alltime single game record for total offense
(447) and passing yards (377) in leading
East Tennessee State has the Bucs to a victory at #6 Appalachian
produced several professional State. It was the first of two road wins
for the Bucs over ranked teams in 1997.
