March 31, 2015 Vol. 20 No. 35 News Periodical Mailed on March 25 Forty-Six Years Later, Wisconsin’s Original Decoy & Sporting Show Still Going Strong Article & photos by Brian Maloney It was way back in 1970 when a small group of decoy collectors got together and held the very first Wisconsin Decoy and Sporting Collectibles Show. And more than two generations later, the event is still going strong - the oldest event of its kind in the state. The show itself is a From Mike Trudel, a matched pair of one-day affair, but there are three days of spirited room-to-room trading Robert Swan goldeneye decoys, price preceding it, all open to the public. It’s the love of the hobby that brings tag $500. 920-293-4282 both the exhibitors and shoppers here to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where you can find decoys both old and new, lots of other sporting-related collectibles, and an enthusiasm that’s just plain contagious! Continued on pages 6, 7 & 8 This Chuck Fitzgibbon original oil painting “Collins Marsh Memories” was a 2008 Ducks Unlimited contest winner, and was for sale here at the show for $3,000. 920-729-1968 Dan Coombe came with rare finds like this rigmate pair of George Kessler widgeons (circa-1930, $11,500) and Robert Elliston blue-wing teal hen in fine original paint, $13,500. 262-542-3709 From Wisconsin Sporting Collectibles, a distinctive Frank Strey Wisconsin canvasback drake decoy, asking price $375. www.wisconsinsportingcollectibles.com Local History Comes Alive at the February 17th George Auction Service Event in Janesville, Wisconsin Top lot among the books: an 1893 Art Work of Rock County (Wisconsin) published by Chicago’s W. H. Parish that sold for a surprising $625. Continued on pages 14 & 15 A 1922 Toonerville Trolley toy in good original paint made $230. Article & photos by Brian Maloney February 17th was a cold and blustery day in Janesville Wisconsin, but it was warm and bright inside the Rock County Fairgrounds' Craig Center Exhibition Hall, the site of another great George Auction Service sale. Sold were the treasures from a near century-old local collector’s estate, whose eclectic tastes included everything from high-end art glass to litho-tin toys. The surprise of the day was neither though: an 1893 book titled Art Work of Rock County that sold to a happy buyer for $625. Dean and his crew hold more than a hundred auctions per year in this area, many of them outdoors in the warmer months. Thankfully, George Auction Service bidders can retreat to the warmer climate of the Janesville’s Craig Center Hall when the snow flies - where most of their winter auctions are held. A lovely set of six Quezal iridescent glass shades made $425. A set of 11” to 12” 1930s Seven Dwarfs dolls fetched $410. Marked Tiffany 4” Gold Favrile bowl, $425. 2 ** Store Closing ** “Established 1971” 119 South Central, Marshfield, WI 54449 KAPPEL’S CLOCK SHOP 10 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. • Closed Tuesdays Wisconsin’s Largest Antique Clock Shop 715-387-0770 (Inconsistent Hours - Call Ahead!) 40% OFF St o re w ide S a l e Fo r t h e m o n t h o f Ap r i l {E x l u d i n g 3 Ve n d o rs} Fox River Antique Mall Gilbert 1883 Oak, all original, $495.00 (Exit 225 off I-80, 7 mi. Brandon had state to finish out his season. Although they took Fourth place, they played strong. We were ahead by 6 points & as everyone knows, it is not over until the buzzer goes off. I don’t think I have to say, we lost in the last 8 minutes of play. Pictured above upper right, Brandon had two penalties, one was a good penalty, so the other team wouldn’t score on us. The other was because a player on the other team punched Brandon in the face & referee’s want to control the situation so they take them both. No bother to him, he enjoys the break. Upper left, is him checking someone to the boards, playing for state was the most aggessive time he played. Bottom left is him smiling with his state pin for Fourth place. Brandon takes defeat well, he says he did the best that he could & learned something for the next time he plays the game. He produces gunning birds like this bluebills, price tag $100 for the pair. 920-293-4282 Matched pair of bluebill decoys from Marv Meyer, price tag $300. 608-372-6066 Multi-talented wildlife artist Chuck Fitzgibbon came with original oils like this “Moonlight Migration” ($800), plus this amazingly-detailed sleeping green-wing teal carving priced at $1,500. 920-729-1968 For many years, the event has been held at the beautiful Hilton Garden Inn of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. It’s an easy three-hour drive from Chicago - less than half that from Milwaukee. Although the show is an independent one, and not affiliated with any club, it is still very much a collector’s show. Dozens of decoy and sporting enthusiasts buy, swap, and sell from their hotel rooms during the week, then head down to the show itself, held in the Hotel’s ballroom on Saturday. You may not have even thought about it, but decoys truly are one of North America’s original art forms. The idea is probably much older than most of us realize. Early colonists found the Native Americans already successfully using duck decoys, as they had been for many centuries before. These immigrants then began using the same technique with decoys of their own design - just to feed their families. The coming of the railroads changed everything. The rapidly-growing urban Award winning carver Marv Meyer populations needed food, and the trains were an easy way for the new “market hunters” to quickly get their waterfowl harvest to the big cities. That wholesale hunt- brought two exceptional carved buttering of ducks meant a need for huge quantities of decoys too. As you might imagine, nut ducks, with natural walnut hull it’s the period where most of the commercial decoy factories had their heyday as well. stains and priced at $750 and $1,250. 608-372-6066 That’s when the iconic makers such as Peterson, Mason, and Dodge got their starts. They’re still one of the most collectible categories of decoys today, with factory birds to be found in nearly every display at the show. But there were many smaller factories making decoys during the period, among the most notable the Badger State’s Evans Decoy Company. Based in Ladysmith, Wisconsin in the 1920s and 1930s, they produced three grades of decoys in several Midwestern species. And of course, thousands of talented, and not-so-talented, hunters carved decoys for their own use. Most all of the exhibitors are avid sportsman, coming into the hobby of decoy collecting from the love of sporting and the outdoors. Some are from the immediate area, which because of massive Lake Winnebago and other area lakes, has a rich history of waterfowl hunting. Others come from several surrounding states, with many hailing from Illinois River country, the Midwest’s most legendary waterfowling area. That’s where many of the most revered early decoy makers plied their trade. Robert Elliston was one of the more successful of them, selling decoys as early as the 1880s. He carved the birds, which were then painted by his wife Catherine. That system became something of the norm among Illinois River carvers, resulting in the famous husband and wife teams of Bert and Millie Graves and Charles and Edna Perdew. All produced decoys in a style distinct to the region: sleek and streamlined, in great contrast to the chunky “humpback” style preferred by Wisconsin’s Lake Winnebago carvers. You’ll find dozens of examples of both Illinois River & Two Native American baskets from Lake Winnebago birds all over the show - plus decoys from California to the Roberto Solis: the 10” Tulare “ratCanadian Provinces. tlesnake” basket priced at $2,200, the It’s one of the busiest specialty shows you’ll find anywhere. Antique & vin14” Apache example at $2,600. tage decoy exhibitors make up much of the show, but you’ll find most anything sporting related, including advertising, fishing lures, vintage shell boxes, and more. Many of the region’s premier wildlife carvers come every year too, with examples of their latest masterpieces for sale, from traditional duck decoys to decorative carvings of everything from tiny songbirds to life-size birds of prey. You can’t help but have a good time at the show. I look forward to the event each year, and I don’t even collect decoys. Longtime decoy collector (and Wisconsin Decoy Collectors Association President) Roger Ludwig organizes the event. He can be reached at 920-233-0349. Be sure to pencil in March of 2016 for the 47th edition of the Wisconsin Decoy & Sporting Collectibles Show. And as always, keep an eye out for listings of next year’s show in the Auction Action Antique News! A good sized crowd turned out for the Tuesday morning sale, with many of the bidders attracted by the large array of antique and vintage toys and games. A set of seven dolls ended up the winners of the bunch – 1930s Seven Dwarfs composition dolls that sold as one lot for $410. The vintage tin toys found ready buyers too. Two Lehmann examples, a Zeppelin and a 1907 Bronco, each broke the $200 mark, as did a 1922 Tunerville Trolley that sold for $230. Small-but-nice groups of both art glass and art pottery were the other big draws of the day. Two Tiffany Gold Favrile glass pieces, a 4” bowl and a little salt with its under-plate, made $425 and $250 respectively. A lovely set of six Quezal iridescent glass shades also sold for $425. And the period art pottery at the sale reminded us that nearby Edgerton, Wisconsin was once home to two prominent but short-lived makers: Pauline Pottery and Norse Pottery. Founded in 1883 by Chicagoan Pauline Jacobus, Pauline Pottery it was the first art pottery firm in the Windy City. Production rapidly expanded, and by 1888 the firm had made its move to little Edgerton, Wisconsin, where a high-quality white clay was available. Up to forty workers were employed, making high quality wares that were sold through outlets such as Marshall Field’s and Tiffany’s. Norse Pottery was located nearby, started by an ambitious Pauline Pottery employee. Three floral-decorated Pauline Pottery pieces crossed the block at this sale, the best a 12” vase that fetched $310. An early hand-painted Norse Pottery plate did even better, selling for $350. Local history examples included dozens of early photographic postcards of Janesville and environs, plus several 19th and early 20th century Rock County plat books and atlases. Best by far though, was that unusual 1893 Art Work of Rock County book that sold for $625. The weighty tome was filled with early photographs of Janesville, Beloit, and Edgerton - from commercial buildings to residences to views of the Rock River. Important texts referred to the area’s history and ranged from locations of Native American villages to development of the railroad system. It was a fun way to spend a cold & windy winter’s day. Dean and his crew did their usual great job, quickly selling the several hundred lots of merchandise. Free Appraisals Offer “Antiques Roadshow” Appeal to 50th North American Vintage Decoy and Sporting Collectibles Show at Pheasant Run Resort, St. Charles, IL Article & photos by Jeff Seregny (Midwest Decoy Collectors Association) St. Charles, IL, April 24-25, 2015: Each year, at the North American Vintage Decoy & Sporting Collectibles Show, free identification and appraisals are offered for anything that is brought to the show. This effort is designed to help discover those old artifacts that are hiding around the country and recapture our rich hunting and fishing history. A wide range of items including artwork, duck, goose, shorebird, and fish decoys, wildfowl calls, shotgun shell boxes, fishing items and various outdoor collectibles show up each year for review by the experts in attendance at the show. 2012 brought in a wonderful old hand carved duck call that was a gift to Joseph Nathaniel Whitley, a former top game warden and official in Arkansas over 100 hundred years ago. It was easy to see that this item was special as it was uniquely carved on all sides and had the image of a rattlesnake integrated into the mouthpiece. The call, carved by James Beckhart around 1890, subsequently sold at auction for a record $103,650. The diverse number of unique items that are brought in to the show each year has been growing steadily. Attendees are always excited to discover that grandpa's old “stuff” can be so important and command such strong interest. Free appraisals are available at our tabled event in the resort's MegaCenter on April 24, from 2pm to 7pm, and on April 25 from 9am to 2pm. The Midwest Decoy Collectors Association is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to collect and preserve the history of the decoy as original American folk art. As the largest gathering of its kind, the North American Vintage Decoy and Sporting Collectibles Show is the premier opportunity for the novice, antique dealer or experienced collector to network and learn more about the decoy as functional folk art or to add to their collections. The convention is the biggest event of the year for the IPBA and attracts members from many countries such as Australia, Switzerland, France and Portugal. “This year we are really expanding our events open to the public”, says Deborah Washington, Convention Chair. “All day Saturday, May 2nd we will be hosting events the public may attend including our educational program, “Collecting Perfume Bottles 101”, and our incredible Perfume Bottle & Vanity Show and Sale.” The show boasts the largest showroom of breathtaking, exquisite, vintage perfume bottles and vanity items found anywhere. New this year is a free event called “Vanity Valuations”. The public is invited to bring in two vanity items for a panel of experts to value and identify. When asked 'what's a vanity item?' Ms. Washington says “If it makes you look or smell good, it's a vanity item. If your grandmother left you a vanity item you would like to know more about, we can help you with it.” One of the highlights of the convention will be on Saturday evening with our world renowned, longest running Perfume Bottle auction in the US. Bringing beautiful and unusual perfume bottles to the auction block where bottles will reach hammer prices from one hundred dollars to thousands or tens of thousands. The charming and entertaining, Nicholas Dawes, of Antiques Roadshow celebrity, will return again this year as auctioneer. Prior to the auction Ken Leach, auction organizer, will give a presentation about key items going on the auction block during the auction preview. One incredibly exciting evening not to be missed! “We are thrilled to have the grandson of Marcel Franck, Bernard Dennery, as our keynote speaker this year,” says Jean-Marie Martin-Hattemburg, IPBA International Vice President and author. Leopold Franck introduced his new gadget at the 1878 World's Fair in Paris calling it the pulverisateur or vaporisateur. Later his son, Marcel Franck, became synonymous with cutting-edge atomizing systems. Mr. Dennery will be sharing information regarding the re-launch of the Marcel Franck brand with highend Art Deco perfume bottles. The IPBA has designed fun, interesting and educational events for its members and the public alike. Don't miss this opportunity to see and be amazed by gorgeous perfume bottles and vanity items. For a list of events open to the public or for more information contact Teri Wirth at 407-973-0783 or at [email protected].
