ANNUAL SENIOR AWARDS NIGHT
JUNE 26, 2008
Members of the graduating Class of 2008 were honored at the Annual Senior Awards Night held at Cohoes High
School. The teaching and guidance staff selected students who would receive various awards including the CHS High School
Alumni awards. This year, Alumni awards totaled eighteen thousand, two hundred dollars. Alumni awards accounted for
approximately thirty percent of the almost sixty thousand dollars awarded to the graduates that evening.
Principal Joseph Rajczak began the assembly by delivering encouraging words to the graduates and thanking the
many organizations and individuals for their continued generosity. “ This generosity enables Cohoes students to further their
education” he said. He was assisted by Vice Principal Deanna Kelly.
Music was provided by the Brass Choir under the direction of Mrs. Carrie Briggs. Guest speakers were the Honorable
John McDonald III, Mayor of Cohoes and Mr. Robert Libby, Superintendent of Schools.

Many volunteers spent a couple of hours in the High
School Library on May 15, 2008 reading seniors’ essays. It
is always an insight into the views and expectations for the
future of the graduates. As always, it is an interesting experience and we urge others to attend and assist in the reading
and evaluation of these papers.
First place in AP English went to Matthew Marsett, Second
place to Emily Bagley and Third place to Krystal Johnson.
First place in English 12 R went to Michaela Powers.
Second place went to Courtney Galuski and Third place went
to Katie Hamilton. Congratulations to everyone. Some winners are on the previous pages.
President’s Corner
This newsletter comes to you with a lot of information. We again
had a very successful Awards Night. We presented 30 awards at
the High School and 2 awards at the Middle School. We are so
happy to be able to present $18,400 to these deserving students.
This year’s class at the High School had over thirty Honor Students,
the most ever. This is a testimony to the hard work that the administration and the faculty have done to improve the quality of education in our schools.
We have Alumni news and highlites of upcoming reunions. The
big event this fall is our Fabulous Fifties II “Plus” weekend.
Keveny and Cohoes High have joined together to make this a true
50’s celebration. We have many events planned for everyone to
attend. Please inform us as soon as possible if you plan to attend
the Saturday events. We want to be good hosts to all of you. We
are very excited about everything that will be going on and hope to
see you all the weekend of Sept. 12-14. Remember, these events
are open to all. So, call your friends and come join us, if not for all,
at least for one! Many thanks go to Anne Shields and Al Feldman
for chairing the weekend and the planning committee, Joan Plant
Crawford, Joyce Miranda Lemerow, Chuck Malley, Joyce Palka
Vellutino, Anne McAteer Cavosie, Millie McGork Girard and Joan
VanSlyke. See you in the fall!

2008 has been a busy year for the Alumni Association and
myself. Donations have been generous and we have added
two new awards to our roster. This newsletter is always a big
job, but one that is rewarding when finally completed. This
particular edition was a little more challenging because of the
added copy for the Fabulous Fifties and the Annual Alumni
Picnic. We are glad to add our friends and neighbors from
Keveny Memorial Academy to the list of invited guests.
In a year of economic turmoil, we hope that the events of
the weekend will reunite old friends and classmates. These
events have always been social events meant to gather us
together at a minimum cost we all can afford.
Thanks to Cliff Tironi, his staff and Michael’s Banquet House
for helping keep costs in control.

Alumni Spotlight on:
Dr.Donald Duclos
English Dept.Chairman
William Patterson University
Class of 1950
By Chuck Malley‘52
Donald Duclos, Cohoes High School alumnus, 1950, knew
he wanted to be a teacher when he was in third grade at
Boght Corners Elementary School. He was off to an auspicious beginning one day when his teacher had to leave the
classroom and left him in charge. What the boy couldn’t
have known that day was that he was destined to rise high in
the world of academia, or that he would author a critically
acclaimed biography of Colonel William C. Falkner, greatgrandfather of Nobel Prize winner in Literature, William C.
Faulkner, our major Southern novelist.
Duclos earned his BA and Masters degrees at the State
University, College of Education, Albany, NY. It was here that
extensive research for his Master’s thesis began on the “Old
Colonel” and his instructor Dr. Vivian C. Hopkins encouraged
him to continue further research for his Doctoral dissertation.
Duclos was awarded a Fellowship to the University of
Michigan, Ann Arbor. He completed all requirements for the
degree of Doctor of Philosophy and his dissertation--a major
work entitled Son of Sorrow-The Life, Works & Influence of
Colonel William C. Falkner (1825-1889). During the period of
completing the dissertation, he taught American Literature at
Wayne St. University in Detroit for two years before accepting a position at William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ
teaching American Literature, a career which lasted 26 years
until his sudden, untimely death in November, 1988. At that
time, he was Chairman of the English Department.
Donald Duclos was recognized as a Faulkner Scholar, and
invited to speak at a Symposium on Faulkner at West Point.
His work on Colonel Falkner was important because his
famous great-grandson admired and reflected the Colonel’s
life in his literary works, most notably as Colonel John
Sartoris in his novel Sartoris. But, the Old Colonel was
famous in Mississippi in his lifetime (1825-1889) as a novelist--The White Rose of Memphis and Rapid Ramblings in
Europe, a Confederate Civil War Hero and railroad builder.
Duclos’ wife, Kay, (Catherine Shevlin Duclos, 1950) was
contacted by International Scholars Publications in 1998 who
wanted to publish her husband’s book. She agreed and edited the book. “I didn’t change a thing,” she said in an interview with CHS Alumni Newsletter. Son of Sorrow is cited by
Stephen Hahn, Associate Provost and Professor of English
at William Paterson, as “the principal point of reference for
information about the Old Colonel.” Joseph Blotner, author
of Faulkner, A biography cites Duclos’ “thorough-going work
as the single best source of information” on Colonel Falkner.
Also, Arthur F. Kinney, Professor of Literary History,
University of Mass., Amherst, wrote: “Duclos’ book is unrivaled in its detailed documentation of William Faulkner’s
Cont’d
great grandfather.
To gather all the information and compile the historical
background meant much correspondence, delving in to the
records of the reconstruction period after the Civil War. It
also necessitated travel to Ripley, Mississippi, hometown of
the Old Colonel. Duclos was successful in interviewing most
of the Faulkner family, and he was the only researcher on
The Colonel to have been granted an interview with William
Faulkner--arranged through the efforts of William’s nephew
Jimmy Faulkner (John Faulkner’s son).
Much information and documentation was furnished by
members of the Faulkner/Falkner family. They were most
welcoming and hospitable to this young “Yankee” who was
finally doing a study on the Old Colonel.
Many attempts were made to publish Son of Sorrow but
not without cutting parts of the work. This would not be possible without losing many of the experiences in the Colonel’s
life which one can find reflected in William Faulkner’s novels.
Students at William Paterson University taking a course on
Faulkner with Duclos were in for a treat as he was able to
bring to life the characters in William’s works as they related
to the life of the Old Colonel.
Publication of Son of Sorrow was a dream long held by
Duclos. His first love, however, was teaching. When news
broke of his sudden death, students and faculty alike were
devastated. At the Memorial service on campus, students
spoke of his enthusiasm in his teaching. They never left his
classroom feeling they had not gained from having taken a
course with him--”he was always up and, therefore, we never
left the classroom feeling down.”
Duclos would often comment to friends and colleagues of
the wonderful teachers he had in high school and college-teachers who encouraged and motivated the students and,
when they saw potential, pushed a little harder or helped
pave the way to go on to higher learning. In his life’s career,
he very often did the same. He inspired many women to
return to college and earn or complete a degree. (He
inspired Kay, as well, to return and complete a degree in
Library Science and Business Administration).
Don and Kay were classmates at Cohoes High School,
Class of 1950. They both graduated with the distinction of
being voted the boy and girl who did most for their class during their four year at CHS.
A Cohoes High Alumni Association Dramatic Arts
Scholarship is donated by Kay each year in memory of Don.

Jim Charles

Peter Ensel 3rd

By Ch u c k Ma lle y ‘ 52
In the Summer of 2001, three months before 9/11, the
casual conversation went like this: Jim Charles: “Wouldn’t it
be great to do something at the Cohoes Music Hall?” “Yes,
but who would come to Cohoes?” a friend said. As it turned
out, lots of theater-goers came and lots are still coming.
Charles, a 1978 Cohoes High School grad, had asked the
question during a casual boat outing on the Hudson River.
Eight months later, he staged “Tonight Tonight,” a Broadway
musical review at the hall. It sold out.
“Tonight Tonight” featured Broadway and off-Broadway
performers. Actors receive salaries, transportation and housing at a company-owned cast house in Cohoes.
Charles manages the stage and Tony Rivera runs the business of their non-profit company, C & R Productions. The
company boasts a mailing list of 15,000 people in the Capitol
Region. “It’s absolutely a gem.” Charles says of the historic
19th Century music hall.
The Cohosier lived in New York City from 1978-2002,working and studying voice, dance and acting. He decided to
leave the Big Apple after terrorists attacked the World Trade
Center, returning only several times a year to conduct talent
auditions.
“I saw the potential in the 1873 hall while performing there
in three shows in 1988,” Charles said. “It’s a very rare theater. It’s a destination now for people coming to Cohoes.”
The theater company employs six full-time employees as
well as hires local talent in addition to Broadway actors.
The producer/actor sees a great future ahead for a growing CR Productions -especially its programs for children.
He talked about what a “wonderful sight” it is to see the long
lines of elementary school kids hiking downtown from Abram
Lansing Elementary School to take in a matinee (two more of
which are coming up this season).
Students also come from the Cohoes High and Middle
Schools, as well as from all over the capital region. Charles
feels it’s very important for youth to have access to live stage
productions.
Charles pursued a professional life in theater after high
school. New York City became his adopted home until 9/11
which became the improbable impetus that brought him back
to his hometown, but not without a purpose.
He brought along a touch of Broadway for the little theater
on Remsen Street. “We’re truly blessed to have this theater.”
he said.
Thank you all for making 2008 a success story
for the Cohoes High School Alumni Assn.

University of New York Chancellor’s Awards
Peter J. Ensel III, Dr. Tracie Church Guzzio and Peter
Ransom received the Chancellor’s Excellence in Teaching
Award. The recipients will be honored during President’s
Opening Day Welcome prior to the start of the fall semester
at SUNY.
Peter Ensel III, a 1976 graduate of Cohoes High School is
an associate professor and the Chair of the Communications
Department at SUNY Plattsburgh. He has taught a variety of
classes including television production, electronic media
management and writing for television and radio. Student
responses from these courses indicate that students not only
value his knowledge and enthusiasm, they also find his
courses challenging and feel they have learned from them.
“His effectiveness as a teacher and mentor is shown
through the number of his students who win awards, secure
competitive internships and establish successful and satisfying careers in their field” said SUNY Plattsburgh President
John Etting.
In addition, Ensel has won more than a dozen fellowships and grant competitions. He has also held the title of
State Coordinator of the Year from the National Broadcasting
Association and Advisor of the Year from the National
Broadcasting Society.

Class of1950
by Bill Reu
Class Valedictorian, Lois has continued to be a person who
achieved success over some tough odds. This is chronicled
in the nomination for “Mother of the Year” sent to the Tulip
Festival 2008 Committee by her daughter-in-law, Lou Carol
Comley. She was a finalist out of 90 nominees. At age 19,
Lois was hospitalized with TB for 15 months and pregnant
with her first child during that time. She was hospitalized for
two years. Upon recovery Lois had thirteen more children.
She worked at Bellevue Women’s Hospital for thirty years to
help support the family. When her youngest son started college, her husband was diagnosed with alzheimer's and
passed away after seven difficult years. She still volunteers
at Bellevue, sings in the choir and continues to love and support her children.

resident or just revisiting your old home town. Visit the Farmers’ Market Friday on your way to Social Hour at Van Schaick
Island Country Club. Change is the word if you are looking down Remsen Street or driving down Delaware Avenue to the
Peebles Island Open House. Visit Cohoes Visitor’s Center and watch the film, peruse the pictures and displays. Your parents
or an aunt or uncle may be in one of the pictures on display. Tour the Cohoes Music Hall and glimpse an era when Vaudeville
was king. Tour the Harmony Mills and the Cohoes Falls Overlook. Access to the falls are being enhanced with an observation
platform just north of Craner Park on Mohawk Street. Visit the turbine room that once was the source of power for the
entire Harmony Mills Complex.
