On the

Build your cardboard
and duct tape sailing
ship and join us for
the Second Annual
Labor Day Regatta.
Plus, don’t miss our
end-of-summer
fireworks display! The
poolside event, buffet
and fireworks will be
great fun!
With the last bit of summer humidity slowly
dissipating, we begin the annual transition to
our fall and winter seasonal schedule. Despite
the somewhat extreme summer weather we
have experienced, it has been a wonderful
season, with many of you regularly taking
advantage of all that your Club has to offer.
I do hope many of you have constructed
your vessels and plan on participating in
our Second Annual Labor Day Regatta! The
Regatta will feature teams or individuals in
several categories who have assembled a boat
utilizing only duct tape and cardboard. The
Club will provide paddles, and there will be a
series of race events to fittingly close the pool
for the season, and as a fun way to end the
summer with some good laughs, great friends
and great times!
We have also rescheduled our Fourth of
July “burn banned” fireworks display for our
Labor Day festivities with special guests from
the Little Rock Central High School Marching
Band performing on the front lawn while
introducing the fireworks display with their
rendition of the National Anthem. What more
could one ask for as we close out the summer!
The college football season is right around
the corner and the Club will once again be
televising all of the Razorback games available
to us through cable, satellite and/or pay-perview. You won’t want to miss a minute of the
action! Game coverage will be available in the
Men’s Grill, Centennial Lounge, President’s
Lounge, and also in the Mixed Grill for family
viewing. Chef Brian will be offering several
options for game-day cuisine. You can dine
here, or dine in the comfort of your own home
with our popular Tailgate Take-Out Menu,
featuring many of your tailgating favorites
packaged for you to take on the road, or to
your living room as you enjoy a full schedule of
college and pro games throughout the season
and through the Super Bowl. A copy of the
order form is included in this issue of columns
and can also be downloaded at
www.CCLR1902.org.
Believe it or not, October is right around
the corner with our annual “Halloween
Spooktacular and Trunk-or-Treat” kicking off
the fall, holiday and Christmas seasons. Before
you know it, it will be time for the Fall Festival,
Thanksgiving Feast and ever-popular Christmas
Dinner Dance, before ringing in another New
Year in style. I encourage each of you to pay
close attention to our calendar of events in each
issue of Columns and at www.cclr1902.org
to assure that you have all of the information
necessary to enjoy this special time of year at
your Club.
The Club’s holiday banquet and event
calendar is also filling up quickly with a
continued interest in and requests for banquet
space. I would encourage all of you to please
contact Debi Davies at 664-1531 as soon
as possible to discuss your holiday event
plans, whether for a social gathering, family
celebration, employee appreciation party, or
business-related meeting or event. Chef Brian
will be happy to work with you to customize a
menu to suit your needs, while Debi can help
you with everything from decorations to audio/
video equipment and overall coordination
of your event, assuring that it will be one to
remember!
I would be remiss if I did not take a
moment to thank Ina Cobb and her staff of
awesome lifeguards and pool attendants for
what has been a wonderful summer at the pool!
I have been told by many of you how wonderful
the staff was poolside this year and that the
consistency of the staff this year definitely made
a difference.
Hats off to Chef Brian and the snack bar
culinary team for a wonderful summer as well.
Together with our team of servers we were
able to deliver exemplary resort-style service
to our many patrons enjoying the renovated
pool pavilion. Kudos one and all! I look forward
to seeing many of you back on our Member
services team next year.
I truly appreciate all of the positive
comments and words of encouragement I
receive from so many of our Members. In
addition to the respectful and constructive
criticism I receive from time to time, I am better
able to initiate the necessary improvements,
which enhance the Club experience for all
Members and their families. My door is always
open and I encourage you to please contact me
at any time I may be of assistance.
I look forward to seeing you at the Club!

Imagine a cool evening with a
roaring fire in front of the fireplace on
the North Patio. This venue, complete
with lounge furniture and dining tables,

She went on to say there was never
a day that he did not look forward
to coming to work, which is certainly
a testament to his co-workers and
also the Members who he served for
so many years. I ask that you please
offer your prayers for Curtis and his
family, as well as for the many long
term employees who are grieving
the loss of their friend and colleague.
His memorial service was held on
Saturday, August 25, at the Premier
Funeral Home here in Little Rock.

Turf Talk
As I am writing this article
in mid-August we continue to battle
through unusually dry conditions, with
less than 4 inches of recorded rainfall
since May 1. Compared to an average
year, that puts our yearly total about 8
inches below normal during this time.
This weather pattern has impacted
our water usage and the overall
condition of the turf, especially on
fairways and in rough areas. Irrigation
requirements for turf are based on
total water loss through evaporation
from the soil surface in addition to
the amount of water the plant uses,
better known as evapotranspiration
or ET. Humidity, temperature, cloud
cover and wind speed all effect the
ET. During late July and early August
we consistently had ET readings of
.25/day or higher. In our situation, to
replace all the moisture lost at an ET
of .25 we would need to apply over
850,000 gallons of water on our turf
areas. Our system is only capable
of applying around 600,000 gallon
during a normal night water cycle.
To compensate for the deficit, we run
some irrigation heads during play
and hand water dry or “hot spots” with
hoses. This helps reduce the deficit
but we lose some ground each day.
Our irrigation system is excellent but
as all systems installed in areas which
normally receive 40+ inches of rainfall
a year they are designed to carry the
landscape between rain events and
not compensate for a severe drought
such as we are experiencing. I hope
this gives you a better understanding
of why we are watering during the day
and there are still numerous dry spots
throughout the course.
During September we will begin
to apply our fall Zoysia Patch control
applications. Even though it has been
hot and dry, it is critical that these
fungicide applications are applied
on schedule to prevent disease for
occurring once we start to receive
the normal fall rains and cooler
temperatures. I anticipate we will start
this work by mid September. Since
these fungicides require watering-in
immediately following application to
be effective, my staff will monitor golf
traffic to minimum disruption to the
golfers whenever possible.
In addition, we will do the fall
greens aeration sometime in mid to
late September. This is different from
past years when this program was
completed after the Member-Guest
in early October. A schedule change
moving the Member-Guest to October
19-21 does not allow adequate
time after the event to complete the
process, and allow the greens to
completely heal before the end of the
growing season. As in past years we
will alternate closing the front and
back nines for the entire day on a
Monday and Tuesday to complete this
work. Once a window of opportunity,
good weather, presents itself I will post
the actual aeration dates.
Look forward to seeing everyone
on the course this fall!

A Note on Fall
Junior Tennis
Clinics
In order to offer greater
convenience and options for our
parents after school this fall, we have
made some schedule changes to
junior clinics. All classes will now run
Monday through Thursday. Each day,
beginning tennis for our little ones will
be offered from 3:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Immediately following, we will move
into our junior clinics for our older kids
from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Parents may
choose the days they wish to attend
by committing to any two days, three
days, or four days. This will be billed
monthly. At the beginning of each
month, we need to know for staffing
reasons which option you select. Again,
advance registration is required.
We are excited about the upcoming
offerings, and hope this provides great
after-school convenience for
our parents.

you’re missing. Anna Kournikova is a
spokesperson for Cardio Tennis and
has said, “Cardio Tennis is a fun way to

Walking Lunge with a Twist
Krissa Thoreson,

Ronnie Stone,
Personal Trainer
The walking lunge with a twist is a great
overall conditioning exercise. For the golfer, it
serves to integrate the leg/torso/arm pattern of
force and power generation. 1 Stand with a 6-20 pound medicine ball by
your right side.
2. Step into the lunge with your left leg and at
the same time swing your arms in an arc
over your head. The movement of the arms
should be timed so that it concludes at the
same time as the lunge movement of your
legs.
3. Once you are at the bottom of the lunge with
your left leg forward, your torso should be
rotated to the left of your hip. Continue the
same motion in the next lunge and twist
cycle. As you are walking forward, your
momentum should carry you into the next
lunge. When you come up from the bottom
position, your arms should swing to the right
as your right leg steps forward. Sunday, 2:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.

sign up in the Club office for this popular event. Ina Cobb and her lifeguards have done a
wonderful job at the pool this year. The snack bar
crew and attendants are also to be congratulated
on their efforts, and the outstanding service they
provided in the pool area throughout the summer. September and October will be busy months
on the golf course with the Men’s and Women’s
Club Championships in September and the Annual
Men’s Member-Guest scheduled for October 19
through 21. Sign up for these events in the Golf
Shop. Thanks again to Keith Ihms and his staff for
the great job of keeping the course in wonderful
shape during the hot summer months. Blake Starkey and his staff have also had
a busy summer at the Tennis Center and have
scheduled a number of activities and events this
fall. Our pros will host tennis activities and dinner
for our younger players on selected Friday nights
during September. Fall Junior Tennis Clinics
are also scheduled and additional information
is available in the Tennis Shop. The Club is also
hosting the first CCLR Collegiate Championship
September 21 through 23 with NCAA Division I
women’s teams from Arkansas, Ole Miss, Oklahoma
and Texas Tech participating. This is a great
opportunity to enjoy three days of outstanding
college tennis. More details and schedules are
available at the Tennis Center and in this edition of
Columns.
Football season is here and the Club will again
host watch parties for the Razorback games in the
President’s Lounge, Centennial Lounge, Mixed Grill
and Men’s Grill. Please contact the Club office for
details and reservations. Also, the Club is again
offering a convenient take-out menu throughout the
football season, which was a hit with tailgaters last
year. As Mr. Burgess noted in his recent second
quarter report to the Members, activity remains
strong at The Country Club of Little Rock with a
positive forecast for the remainder of the year. It is
great to see the membership using and enjoying
the Club.
See you at the Club.
