Noted Historian and Baseball Expert John Liepa presents “How
Come celebrate National Library Week with us! This week, Spencer Public Library joins libraries in schools, campuses and communities nationwide in celebrating National Library Week, a time to highlight the value of libraries, librarians and library workers. Libraries today are more than repositories for books and other resources. Often the heart of their communities, campuses or schools, libraries are deeply committed to the places where their patrons live, work and study. Libraries are trusted places where everyone in the community can gather to reconnect and reengage with each other to enrich and shape the community and address local issues. Librarians work with elected officials, small business owners, students and the public at large to discover what their communities needs are and meet them. Librarians listen to the community they serve, and they respond. During National Library Week, we are offering a little bit of something for everyone. Between movie night for the adults, fun with henna for the teens, and Rick Eugene Brammer’s magic show for the children, there is a lot to look forward to! We are using a kit from the Henna Caravan company, which vouches that their products are made from all-natural ingredients and are guaranteed free from harmful chemicals. However, there is a slight possibility the henna application can result in an allergic reaction, so we need parent or guardian permission for this activity. You may read more about their product and about this art form from their website: www.hennacaravan.com RETURN SIGNED FORM TO LIBRARY FRONT DESK OR BRING TO EVENT Teen’s Name: _________________________________________________________________ Parent / Guardian's Name: _________________________________________________________________ Parent / Guardian’s Telephone #: (____) ______-__________ I hereby give my permission for my child, named above, to participate in the event listed above. April is also a great month to celebrate your library and library workers. April 14-20 is National Library Week, and April 16 is National Library Workers Day. So come in and tell us how you use the library and things you would like to see happen at SPL. We’re here for you! It’s also National Poetry Month and National Stress Awareness Month, so come on in and grab a book of poetry or any of our materials and de-stress for a little while. We’ve got a great new patio to sit and experience (hint hint)! ♥ Mandie Roberts, Director The AJCC is an open club for any and all fans of anime and manga, as well as any other facet of Japanese culture. This program is geared toward all ages, sports fans, history buffs, and the general community. One Story, Many Authors If a story started… Alice stood on the deck of the massive ocean liner, waving furiously to the friends and family that had come to see her off. What do you think would happen next? Where is Alice going? Why is she leaving home? What adventures await her? Participate in a cooperative writing project and help tell Alice’s story. DIY CLUB The DIY Club meets on April 11th at 6:30 pm. This month, the DIY Club will be making hot pads from rocks. Please register to save your spot! More details on the project and the club itself can be found by asking at the front desk or calling the library at 580-7290. B.Y.O.B. Bring Your Own Book BYOB is a relaxed book club! The feature of the month is often a new release and is always listed in SPiLling Ink and posted throughout the library! [NOTE: PLEASE PRE-REGISTER TO RESERVE YOUR SEAT.] Adult Movie Night April 15, 2013 7:00 pm Parental Guidance Old school grandfather Artie (Billy Crystal), who is accustomed to calling the shots, meets his match when he and his eager-to-please wife Diane (Bette Midler) agree to babysit their three grandkids when their type-A helicopter parents (Marisa Tomei, Tom Everett Scott) go away for work. But when 21st century problems collide with Artie and Diane's old school methods of tough rules, lots of love and old-fashioned games, it's learning to bend - and not holding your ground - that binds a family together. On April 23rd, you can expect to see several of us around town with our arms full of books. Why? Along with several other people in Spencer and the surrounding area—as well as all across the country!—we’re giving out books to those who don’t regularly read and people who don’t normally have access to printed books, for reasons of means or access. Reading for pleasure improves literacy, actively engaging emerging readers in their desire to read. Reading changes lives, improves employability, social interaction, enfranchisement, and can have a positive effect on mental health and happiness. Book readers are more likely to participate in positive activities such as volunteering, attending cultural events, and even physical exercise. Or more simply put, books are fun—and they can be life-changing. With the passionate volunteer support of thousands of people across the country, World Book Night is spreading the love of reading, person to person.
