President’s Letter
I had the privilege of being
raised by my grandparents;
my grandfather was a retired
Army Colonel. I would
describe this amazing man
as a tough, get-down-tobusiness…teddy bear. He
fought wars, watched his
friends killed, and suffered
through harsh times. The
Army taught him discipline,
dedication, and strategic thinking. I am thankful for his
dedication to our country. I am thankful that he chose
to exercise his “Army” wisdom as he raised me.
Veterans Day, November 11th, honors the men and
women who have served in the armed service.
Thanks to the efforts of the Daisy Mountain Veterans,
countless volunteers, and the ACC, Anthem has two
events that celebrate and honor veterans near and far.
These events are an opportunity for our community to
express gratitude for the selfless service of these men
and women.
• Anthem Veterans Parade - Saturday, Nov. 9, at 10 a.m.
• Veterans Day Ceremony - Monday, Nov. 11 at 10 a.m.
in the ACC Community Park
As Maya Angelou said, “How important it is for us to
recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes!”
I am personally looking forward to the opportunity to
remember my grandfather and numerous veterans who
have touched my life. Please join me at these events;
opportunities to honor and thank all who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
I look forward to seeing you!

Preserving, Protecting, and Enhancing a Genuine Sense of Community
The Anthem Community Council (ACC) serves as a unifying entity for the overall
Anthem community. Our mission is to establish and maintain a governing structure
that will preserve, protect, and enhance the plans, policies, infrastructure, and
resources needed to support a genuine sense of community, facilitate sound
economic development, and promote quality of life for all Anthem residents.
Renovations Continue on
Anthem Civic Building
www.OnlineAtAnthem.com/content/facilitiesmaster-plan-overview-and-update.
At their September meeting, the ACC Board
approved the addition of a permanent concrete
patio surface and patio furnishings to the Civic
Building, 3701 W. Anthem Way. The intent of
this new area is to provide overflow space for
large meetings; registration area for events and
meetings; reception area for possible weddings,
banquets, and/or large events; and a social
gathering space for residents, visitors, and groups.
ACC Budget-in-Brief to be
Mailed to all Homeowners
Mid-November
The initial phase of construction is substantially
complete, allowing ACC and HOA staff to
relocate into allocated office space on the
second floor. Maricopa Country Sherriff’s Office
renovations are now in progress and they are
slated to move into their new space on the first
floor this month. Renovations continue on the
community welcome center, quiet exercise
space, and new meeting rooms. The project
is expected to be complete in time for a late
January grand opening. To follow the progress
of the project: www.OnlineAtAnthem.com/

Opportunity Way Park Fill
Slated for November
The work to fill the large pit on the north end
of the proposed Opportunity Way Park site,
delayed slightly due to contractor schedules,
is scheduled to begin this month. The fill
material for this project is coming from the
lease holder on the State land immediately
west of the proposed park, which will avoid
the added cost and inconvenience of hauling
thousands of yards of fill material from more
remote locations. The preliminary concept
for the Park, which is still in the early stages
of development, includes two multi-use
sports fields (without lights), a half basketball
court, a playground area, leisure games, a
ramada, a restroom building, a parking lot,
sidewalks/pathways, and landscaping on the
ten-acre property, north of Opportunity Way
and west of 46th Lane. For more information:
Anthem homeowners
should expect to see an
ACC budget summary, or
Budget-in-Brief, in the
mail by mid-November. It
will include an outline of
the Operating Budget for
the fiscal year beginning
Jan. 1, 2014. Sent every
year to all Anthem
property owners, the
annual Budget-in-Brief represents the scrutiny
and preparation of ACC operations in order
to find and implement opportunities for
cost savings in conjunction with the Board’s
strategic priorities. At the time of the printing of
this Resource Guide, the ACC Board had not yet
approved the 2014 budget. This was scheduled
to take place at their Oct. 23 public meeting.
Board Outreach Offers Variety
of Interactions with ACC
Leadership
Residents looking to meet and share views
with ACC Board members and staff may take
advantage of the following new community
outreach initiatives:
• “Community Forum” will be offered
annually, with the inaugural meeting
planned for Dec. 11, 2013, from 6:30-8
p.m., at the ACC Community Center. The
goal of these meetings is to facilitate
communication and information sharing
between ACC and HOA Board members,
staff, and Anthem residents in a less formal
setting than the regular monthly board
meetings; as well as to explain the roles and
ACC Resource Guide 3
council
news
responsibilities of each of the participating
organizations. For example, who is in charge
of monitoring street parking? What entity
provides gate passes? Where are HOA dues
funds allocated? These meetings will include
presentations from Anthem Community
Council Board and staff, as well as members
of the Country Club, Parkside, and Village
Homeowners Associations, and include an
opportunity for one-on-one Q&A.
• “Coffee Talk” will be quarterly, one-hour, casual
conversations to discuss community issues
in an open and informal setting. The goal of
these informal meetings is to provide Anthem
residents and the business community the
opportunity to hear about and discuss issues,
projects, and services as they relate to the
current and future viability of Anthem, as
well as an opportunity to ask questions and
provide ideas. From time to time, the ACC
CEO may also host guests that could include
ACC Board members and HOA leaders. The
first “Coffee Talk” is planned for Jan. 11, 2014,
8-10 a.m., at the ACC Community Center.
• “Meet Your Representatives” will take
place at high traffic events such as local
softball tournaments; First Responders
Golf Tournament; and ACC events such
as Anthem Days, Memorial and Veterans
Day, Music in May, and the 15th Anniversary
Celebration, among others. Come and
interact with local leaders who represent
the Anthem community.
Proposed Residential
Development Project goes
through City of Phoenix Public
Hearing Process
The City of Phoenix’s Rio Vista Village
Planning Committee held an open meeting
in September which included a discussion of
a proposed Lennar residential development
project, just north of the Daisy Mountain
Post Office, on the west side of I-17, adjacent
to Anthem. At that meeting, the Village
Planning Committee voted, by a 3-1 margin,
to recommend denial of this rezoning request.
The case continues to move through the City
of Phoenix public hearing process. Lennar
zoning representatives are scheduled to
speak at a future ACC Board meeting to give
an overview of the project for informational

purposes only. ACC staff will continue to
monitor this project which would include
201 single family homes on 78 acres at the
northwest corner of 43rd Ave. and Circle
Mountain. For more information: 602-262-6940,

15th Anniversary Logo Contest
Kicks Off Celebration
Anthem’s 15th Anniversary, which will be
celebrated throughout 2014, got off to an early
start as Anthem residents turned out at ACC’s
Autumnfest to vote for their favorite entries in
the 15th Anniversary logo contest. Thanks to a
strong field of entrants who put their skills and
passion for the community on display, the contest
included a wealth of excellent original artwork.
The contest’s overall winning entry will be
featured as the centerpiece of a commemorative
quilt that will be displayed in the new Anthem
Civic Building, and used in select 15th Anniversary
promotional and marketing materials.
ACC to Offer Updated Website:
www.OnlineAtAnthem.com
Coming this year, the ACC will have a new look
and enhanced navigation of its current website. As
part of the Board’s marketing strategic plan, staff
will soft launch the updated site by year’s end. The
intent of updating this site is to provide an updated
platform on which the site functions, provide
a more intuitive site search engine, enhance
navigation within the site, and better align with
the ACC’s overall brand initiative. The last update
to the site’s platform was made in 2010. Be sure
to check out the virtual issue of this ACC Resource
Guide and all past issues on the new site!
ACC Resource Guide Returns in 2014
As the year comes to a close, so does this final 2013
issue of the ACC Resource Guide. As such, listed in
this issue are all ACC and HOA meeting and events
for both November and December. With the ongoing commitment to provide Anthem residents
and business owners up-to-date and accurate ACC
and HOA news and information, this publication
will return again to Anthem mailboxes in 2014 in
a semi-annual (six issues per year) format, as well
as continue to be made available online at www.

Drug Series Educates Teens,
Encourages Parents to Stay
Involved
On Sept. 19, area residents turned out for
“National Family Day Awareness and Drug
Education Seminar.” Stephanie Siete of
Community Bridges discussed:
• Dangers of marijuana and underage
drinking
• Latest on teen drug trends and the new
world of synthetic drugs
• How to intervene and effectively
communicate with teens about addressing/
preventing high risk behaviors
The seminar, the third in a series of four,
focused on the importance of reducing,
suppressing, and preventing teen drug use. The
event took place at the ACC Community Center
Gym, and featured an ice cream social, an
Anthem Family Day cheerleading squad, music
from the Musical Theater of Anthem, and
new partners that included Teen Challenge,
The Outlets at Anthem, and the North Valley
Regional Library.
Don’t miss the fourth, and final event in the
year-long series, entitled National Family Day
“Stay Sharp,” presented by Teen Challenge, set
for Dec. 12 (See ad below).

want to commemorate a veteran, but do
not have a specific person to honor. For
each $150 donation, a veteran, who may not
otherwise be represented at the Memorial,
will be chosen from a list generated by local
veterans associations. For more information:

Anthem resident and Marine Corps veteran
Mary Ann Derryberry as a 2013 inductee into
the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame last month.
Derryberry, who served in the Marines from
1969-72, has been among the dedicated

become an Anthem community tradition;
as well, she has diligently served as parade
chairman since the 2005 inception of the

Residents G.A.I.N.ed Crime
Prevention Momentum for
Anthem
October was National Crime Prevention
Month. It was also the time when Anthem
neighborhoods planned block parties to
celebrate its annual G.A.I.N. Night. Last
month’s event proved to be the most successful
to date! Sponsored by Anthem Neighborhood
Watch (ANW), more than 20 neighborhoods
participated in the event with over 15
parties planned throughout the community.
Getting Arizona Involved In Neighborhoods
is an annual Arizona event designed to bring
neighbors together to promote neighborhood
safety, neighborhood communication, and
celebrate the successes of crime prevention
throughout the year. This year’s celebration
was highlighted by community-wide picnics
and gatherings, participant “gift bags,” and
a party-to-party visiting team of Anthem’s
local law enforcement personnel, Daisy
Mountain Fire, ACC Board Members, and ANW
committee members.
‘Tis the Season to Meet
Neighbors
What better timing than during the holidays to
extend a hello or helping hand to spread the
cheer of the season with the neighbors. Here
are some ways to do so:
1. Take a walk and say hello!
2. Spend time on the front porch or yard and
become more available for the simple
drive-by wave or walk-by hello.
3. Go to an Anthem Neighborhood Watch
monthly event. Going to these opens
the door to meeting others in the
neighborhood who care about what
happens in the community.
4. At the mailbox, when picking up the mail,
strike up a conversation with others.
5. Help and ask for help. Neighbors
can be a good source for referrals or
news
recommendations of all types of needs.
Offer a lending hand to unload the groceries;
roll the garbage can back to the house; or
pick up the newspaper on the driveway.
Getting to know the neighbors is fun and
provides the security of knowing who is nearby.
Keep Homes Safe During The Holiday Season
Winter holidays bring an abundance of
presents and vacant houses while people are
traveling. During these times, be especially
vigilant about home and property security.
Keeping a home safe from crime doesn’t
always mean having to install expensive
alarms. Effective home security starts with
properly locked doors and windows, and
visible, well-lighted entryways.
Phoenix Police Offer Crime
Prevention Tips; Residents
Get Involved
While attending the Sept. 5 Crime Prevention
Awareness Forum at the ACC Community
Center, many residents enjoyed crime
prevention items, ice cream treats, and most
importantly, open discussions with Phoenix
Police Officer Manny Valenzuela and North
Valley Posse member Mike Rowe. Two topics
were emphasized:
• Importance of keeping garage doors closed
• How and when to report suspicious activity
Meeting Invitation
All Neighborhood Watch captains, local
law enforcement, and community members
are invited to attend the next ANW meeting
on Thursday, Nov. 7, at 1 p.m. at the ACC
Community Center. Topics for discussion include
recent and upcoming community events and
reports from the law enforcement agencies.

Help Promote Good
Neighbors
The Anthem Country Club Community
Association (ACCCA) is looking to recognize
“Good Neighbors!” As a result, residents are
encouraged to be on the lookout for an early
morning walker who alerts a resident of a
water hose leak; the person who stops to
help a mom with child in tow and hands full
of groceries; or even the person who picks up
litter in a nearby wash every Sunday. Submit
what and who you see by dropping off a note
at the homeowners’ association office or
sending an email to: Jody Cote, Community
Manager, [email protected].
“Be Neighborly” Tip
Pet owners are reminded to clean up after their
animals. Always carry a deposit bag and dispose
of waste properly.
An Update and New Look to Website
Coming this year , the ACC and the Anthem HOAs
will have a new look and enhanced navigation
of its current website, including all ACCCA pages.
Once launched, residents will be encouraged
to visit the user-friendly site for all their ACCCA
information and news. Included will be meeting
agendas, minutes, documents, forms, and new
homeowner information. The ACCCA News
and other articles will be published on the site
regularly, so residents will also be encouraged
to visit regularly. By updating the site’s platform,
navigation will be performed with greater ease.
Keep an eye out for the updated site!
Cleaning a Garage Door
In addition making a home look better,
cleaning the surface of a garage door also gives
home owners the opportunity to inspect the
mechanism of the door for proper function.
Cleaning a garage door can be done with a
bucket, soft bristle brush, cleaning cloth, dish
soap, or other mild detergents, and a garden
news
hose. To begin, wet the exterior surface of the
garage door. Using a cloth or soft bristle brush,
gently scrub the door with warm soapy water.
Rinse the door with the garden hose and allow
it to dry before opening. Stronger cleaning
products may be necessary to address grease
and oil stains.
Although the inside of a garage door may not
be as visible, repeat the cleaning process as it is
important that both sides be kept from overall
dirt and grime build-up. It is also recommended
that garage door tracks and wheels be cleaned
and lubricated on a regular basis.

Website for Selecting Plants in Parkside
The Parkside Community Association has
provided the link below that provides details
on nearly every plant on the Parkside approved
plant list. Residents can choose the type of
plant and click on the link which then goes to a
page where a specific species can be selected.
Once the species is selected, it provides a page
with details of the plant including growth rate,
hardiness, exposure, bloom season, water
requirements, and a photo of the plant. This
website should serve as a guide when selecting
plants from Parkside’s approved plant list:

Parkside Return Wall Colors
The Architectural Review Committee (ARC)
recently made the decision to only allow the
original colors, Stonington and Chocolate
Mousse, on return walls within Parkside. Return
walls are the block walls between the side of
the house and the property line. Due to several
changing colors of return walls over time
(with or without approval from the Parkside
HOA), small paint swatches are now available
at the HOA offices to help homeowners

news
determine which original color should exist
on a respective return wall. If a homeowner
has received approval from ARC for painting
a return wall, this does not apply. The ARC
decision only applies to all future repainting.
