September means the PSTJS is ready for action again, which, in turn, means the Bob Schulz Frisco Jazz Band graces the Ballard Elks stage. It’s been a tradition for umpteen years or so that Bob’s great group opens our season of monthly concerts. Cornetist Schulz gathers his musicians from various California spots, the midwest and from the Seattle suburb of Lake Forest Park, but they play together as if they had a steady gig every weekend of the year. Their cohesiveness – and individual talents, too – are a wonder to behold. It’s a lineup of old hands with decades of service to the wonders of classic jazz. Clarinetist Kim Cusack and trombonist Tom Bartlett come from the Chicago area. Schulz, tuba virtuoso Jim Maihack, and banjoist-vocalist Scott Anthony are SF Bay Area residents. Piano star Ray Skjelbred is Lake Forest Park’s contribution to the group, and everybody’s favorite drummer, Hal Smith, comes north from San Diego. All have made scores of appearances on recordings–from vinyl discs and cassette tapes to CDs, and even on film. All have shone brightly at festivals, both local and international, including coastal and faraway cruises. In addition to our Jazz Society’s date, the band is booked for a 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. appearance at Pioneer Square’s New Orleans Cafe on Saturday, Sept. 17. Jazz Camp Heebie Jeebies 2011 was a roaring success. We had 77 students, the most ever, and they filled every bed available in camp. Students came from numerous Washington cities, as well as students from Chilliwack, Victoria and Vancouver B.C., Seaside, Oregon, several cities in Montana, and two adult returning students from the east coast. Over 100 people were in attendance this year including staff, faculty, volunteers and students. We are so fortunate to have our Director Karla West in charge, camp runs smoothly because of her experience and love of and belief in the opportunity she's making available for the students. PSTJS fully sponsored two new students, Adam Gill, tenor sax and Shayla Chaykin, drums. We also helped sponsor (3/4's of each tuition) returning campers Rachel and Rebecca Ramsey, who are both vocalists. As in the past five years Continued on page 5 Jazz Soundings September 2011 Puget Sound Traditional Jazz Society 19031 Ocean Avenue Edmonds, WA 98020-2344 425-776-5072 www.pstjs.org EVENTS Elks Lodge, Ballard, 6411 Seaview Ave N.W., Seattle UPCOMING EVENTS Sept 18 October 16 November 20 December 18 Bob Schulz’s Frisco Jazz Band Sidewalk Stompers Evergreen Classic Jazz Band Ray Skjelbred’s First Thursday Band LEADERSHIP PRESIDENT: Judy Levy [email protected] 425-890-6605 VICE PRESIDENT: George Swinford [email protected] 425-869-2780 SECRETARY: Cilla Trush [email protected] 206-363-9174 TREASURER: Gloria Kristovich [email protected] 425-776-7816 BOARD OF DIRECTORS Dave Brown: [email protected] Joanne Hargrave [email protected] Leroy Johnson: [email protected] Jan Lemmon [email protected] Edmund Lewin: Ian McKenna: [email protected] George Oelrich: [email protected] Carol Rippey: [email protected] MEMBERSHIP COORDINATOR Carol Rippey: [email protected] Page 2 Gigs for Local Bands BELLINGHAM TRADITIONAL JAZZ SOCIETY 2 - 5 pm VFW Hall 625 N. One of the musician-instructors said to this writer, “It’s like being in a picture postcard! “Camp Heebie Jeebies”, held annually at “Camp David, Jr.”, was well-attended by many enthusiastic young budding musicians this year. The camp is under the very able direction of Karla West, pianist-business manager of the Hume Street Jazz Band, and director of the excellent “Glacier Jazz Stampede”, which is held each October in Kalispell, Montana. She is assisted by a topnotch crew of experienced traditional jazz musicians and by a hard-working staff of volunteers, many of whom are active on the administrative end of the Puget Sound Traditional Jazz Society. Your correspondent accepted Karla’s invitation to sit in on banjo with the “faculty” band, which included several members of bands who are active on the jazz festival circuit. This roster included: Dan Comins-trumpet (leader, Titanic Jazz Band); Howard Miyata-trombone and tuba (High Sierra Jazz Band); John Goodrich-clarinet and soprano sax and Tom Jacobus-tuba, string bass and trombone (Uptown Lowdown Jazz Band); Marty Eggerspiano (Yerba Buena Stompers, and also an A-1 solo ragtimer); and Marilyn Keller-vocalist (Black Swan Jazz Band). Also: trombonist Jackson Stock, who this writer believes was a member of the “Abalone Stompers”, from Monterey, CA, and drummer John Hall who is the leader of the recently revived “Chicago Six”. It was a pleasure and privilege to be included in this stellar crew! The response to our efforts was very positive, and it was good to see so many people dancing to the music. This seems to verify a statement, in a recent issue of “The American Rag”, by New York trumpeter Ed Polcer, who said that this music will survive because people can dance to it! At times, the “faculty” members (and their sit-in guest) were joined by some of the students, who did well for themselves. Your writer was particularly impressed by the young reed man (clarinet and soprano and tenor saxes) Thomas Harris, a graduate of Camp Heebie Jeebies and now leader of his own four piece band in the Bellingham area, who played alongside John Goodrich and fit in quite well; also by the bassist, who was featured on a tune he claimed he didn’t know, but played a fine solo on it. A great example of learning as one goes along! (From a musician’s standpoint, your correspondent can say that applies to all of us who play it!) If these young musicians stick with it, perhaps “OKOM” has a future after all, refuting the claims of those “Jeremiahs” who claim it is a dying art form. To paraphrase Mark Twain: “Rumors of the demise of OKOM are greatly exaggerated!” Page 4 Bob Schulz’s Frisco Jazz Band Sponsors As you recall, we asked for sponsors to help us with the costs of bringing the Bob Schulz Frisco Jazz Band to Seattle. Thank You all for your generosity and quick response in sending your contributions to Carol. We reached our goal which will pay for all the travel fees and the Saturday gig at the New Orleans. We’ll have a large poster at the Elks with every sponsor’s name and a big Thank You to all of you who have made this year’s ‘Schulz weekend’ a reality. The students begin each morning in Theory class: both Adam and Shayla were awarded certificates for having the top scores in their respective Theory classes. Camp David Jr. is a breathtakingly beautiful spot on the shores of Lake Crescent about 35 miles west of Port Angeles. We had a few sunny days and a few not so sunny, and only a little dampness Sunday morning, but by the time everyone arrived at camp, the sun was shining. This was my sixth year as a volunteer, Nancy Foster was there for her fifth year and Joanne Hargrave was there for the second time. For those of you who attend festivals, you'll remember Andrena Gravette (third year volunteer) and Anne Fraser (second year, volunteering as our Registered Nurse); as the Hot Jazz Dancers. We all agree that being at camp is very special to us and something we look forward to eagerly each year. Many of the students danced this year, something Karla started last summer. They have a great time and besides keeping the music alive, they'll also keep the dance steps going for years to come. Included in this issue are letters of thanks to all of you who buy raffle tickets which allow us to send them to camp. I also thank you again for your generosity, this week at Jazz Camp is a valuable and fulfilling experience for each of these budding musicians. Cheers, Judy Letters From Sponsored Students Attending Jazz Camp Dear PSTJS, I Would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to attend camp Heebie Jeebies. The camp had a lot to offer, the classes were informational and helpful. There were also many recreational activities... canoeing, a field to go play anything you want to, swimming and there was a campfire every night. The concerts put on every night by the staff were fun and entertaining and the food was great, “ thanks to the really good cooks.” I also enjoyed the fact that we had the freedom to play our instruments without a parent nagging you to keep it down. The camp was a great experience for me. I learned new techniques, met lots of new people and had an awesome time! Thank you again. Sincerely, Shayla Chaykin Dear Judy Levy, I had a wonderful time at camp Heebie Jeebies this year, and I am really thankful to the members of the Puget Sound Traditional Jazz Society for letting me have this experience. I am amazed at how great the teachers were and I enjoyed listening to myself become a better player from their instruction. I really enjoyed the theory classes and gained a better understanding of how music works. The favorite part of my entire week was the traditional small band practices, because there were less of us we got more focused instruction than if we were in a big band. In the small groups we could play faster, more advanced songs, and learn them in a shorter time than we thought we could have. Lake Crescent was incredibly scenic and made the entire experience even better. Hopefully, I will return next year.
