Plans Announced for
Katy Contemporary Art Museum
The Katy Culture & Arts Alliance is proud
to announce plans to open KCAM - The Katy
Contemporary Art Museum. The location will be in
the City of Katy across from the MKT Depot Museum
& Visitor’s Center at 805 Ave B. KCAM will focus
on art from the 1950’s to the present and concentrating
on regional art. “We have the establishing board of
directors formed and I will be the museum director
and curator” said Ana V. Roman. “The lease was
signed with plans to purchase the building”, she
added. Plans include the first exhibition celebration
“ALL ABOUT KATY!”, a complete restoration
of the 1952 building (originally the Katy Lumber
Company), a museum shop with “Made in Katy”
products and gifts, quarterly exhibitions, the venue
will be available for events as well as meetings and
workshops. Future plans are also in place for another
museum adjacent to KCAM - The Texas Gun &
Trophy Museum.
“We want the Katy Museum District to not only
be a center for culture,” said Roman, “but also be a
magnet for the area businesses, restaurants, and hotels
to prosper. We want visitors to want to stay in Katy,
not just come through. We want new businesses to
open and have a better chance to succeed. These
two museums will make Katy a 6 museum city with
a vital museum district. The Katy Museum District
will prove in years to come to be an incredible source
of revenue for the Katy area.” The latest Houston
Chronicle statistics show that 6.6 million people per
year visit the Houston Museum District and that is
more visitors than the 3 major sport teams combined.
The Katy Contemporary Art Museum will be located across the street from the MKT Depot Museum
in the City of Katy.

Katy’s New Mayor
Outlines Priorities For
Area Growth
By: Dennis Spellman – CoveringKaty.com
City of Katy Mayor Fabol Hughes has two priorities as he
begins his first two year term; fix the fire department’s problems
and convince Houston to sell annexed land surrounding Katy.
Population has outpaced growth of the Katy Fire
Department and now the city is being told by an insurance
rating agency to add staff and equipment or have its rating
reduced. If the rating is downgraded homeowners insurance
rates will increase because property in Katy will be viewed as
a higher insurance risk.
“We are insufficient on manpower, equipment, and we need
a second (fire) station,” Hughes said.
The mayor will fund the changes with surplus revenues.
Hughes’ next priority is negotiating to buy annexed land
surrounding the City of Katy that is controlled by the City of

Katy ISD
Approves
Two New
Elementary
Schools
During their April Board
meeting, the Katy ISD
Board of Trustees approved
a recommendation by
Superintendent
Alton
Frailey to use the services
of Drymalla Construction
Company, Inc. for the
construction of proposed
Elementary Schools No.
36 and No. 37. The new
schools will be refined
repeats of the three new
elementary schools that
opened in August 2012,
and are projected to open
August 2014.
Katy ISD recently held
groundbreaking
ceremonies in recognition
of the construction of
Elementary No. 36, located
in Pine Mill Ranch, and
Elementary No. 37, located
in Cross Creek Ranch in
Fulshear.
Houston; the areas known as
Houston’s ‘Extra Terrestrial
Jurisdiction. He’s concerned
about what will be built
there should the area be
controlled by Houston,
and see an opportunity to
double the size of Katy in
a time when Houston may
be open to selling in order
to raise money during tight
economic times.
“We would like to assume
their ETJ to the north as far as
FM 529 and to the west as far
as FM 2855 and then down to
I-10,” Hughes said.
“We may have to
pony up a little money,”
Hughes admits.
He wants to know how
much money Katy would
have to pony up for the fire
department and purchase
annexed
land
before
spending on any expensive
items. He wouldn’t rule
out building a new city
hall some day but thinks
letting the residents decide
by referendum may be the
best option.
Hughes plans to reach
out to mayoral opponent
Carol Adams after getting
acquainted with his new
role as Mayor of Katy.

Katy Fire Chief Indicted
Accused of Stealing Drugs
By: Dennis Spellman – CoveringKaty.com
A
Harris
County
Grand Jury handed up an
indictment against Katy
Fire Chief Leslie Marc
Jordan, 58, on drug-related
charges on Tuesday May
21, 2013.
Sandra Marie Kinney of
the Harris County District
Attorney’s Office says
the indictment accuses
Jordan of tampering with
evidence and diverting
a controlled substance.
Specifically, Jordan is
accused of taking vials
of Valium from Katy Fire
Department Ambulances
for use by a relative.
Mayor Fabol Hughes
was
only
sworn in to
office
on
Monday night
and he says
the city is
conducting an
administrative
investigation
into the case.
“It is an
unfortunate
situation, however we are
going to allow the criminal
case to run its course,” the
mayor said in a prepared
statement issued to the
media.
Warner Preston is serving
as the acting fire chief
while the investigation
continues.
An indictment is not a
conviction but an agreement
by a group of grand
jurors that prosecutors
have enough evidence of
potential wrongdoing that
Jordan can be put on trial.

The Cinco Ranch High School County Line student media staff was recently
recognized with an Award of Distinguished Merit and presented a Bronze Star Award
by the UIL-Interscholastic League Press Conference at the Texas state ILPC Convention
in Austin. This award recognizes the top scholastic newspapers in the state based on
a master teacher critique and rating. The County Line staff is led by senior co-editors

and who know the nuances of student publications. Certificates are awarded to those
publications which earn the following ratings:
• Award of Distinguished Merit - The association’s highest rating.
• Award of Achievement
• Award of Honor
• Award of Merit
The top publications receiving Award of Distinguished Merit are also entered into
competition for ILPC’s prestigious Gold, Silver and Bronze Star awards. Recipients of the
Star Awards represent the top 10 percent of student newspapers and yearbooks in Texas.

CRHS Senior Bags State Record
800 Pound Alligator
A young hunter who
grew up with a fascination
about dinosaurs and a
dream of hunting what
some call “living dinosaurs”
has harvested the largest
alligator ever certified in
Texas. Braxton Bielski, an
18-year-old Cinco Ranch
High School senior on his
first alligator hunt, bagged
the behemoth 800-pound,
14-foot, 3-inch gator during
a recent public hunt on the
James E. Daughtrey Wildlife
Management Area.
Braxton and his father,
Troy Bielski, were among
481 applicants vying for
10 alligator permits issued
through the Texas Parks
and Wildlife Department’s
public hunting program
for a five-day hunt at the
Daughtrey WMA.
“He’s wanted to hunt
alligators for years,” said
Troy, a Houston police
officer who has applied
annually to TPWD’s special
drawing hunts for the chance
to fulfill his son’s dream.
“We got selected one year
to go on a youth hunt at the

J.D. Murphree WMA, but I
didn’t get the permit in on
time. I remember Brax was
very disappointed. This is
the first year we’ve had to
enter him as an adult and we
got drawn.”
Because alligator hunting
in Texas is conservatively
managed, most hunters
selected for these public
hunts are first-timers and
many have never seen an
alligator in the wild. For that
reason, TPWD biologists
go through an intensive
orientation process and
provide greater guidance
than they would for more
common hunts, like for deer
or waterfowl.
“We went through a twohour orientation and it was
very thorough,” Braxton
recalled. “My dad did a lot
of research online about
alligator hunting and we
asked a lot of questions.”

Mosquito
Spraying Set to
Begin in Katy
The City of Katy
Public Works Department
began spraying Katy for
mosquitoes recently.
Texas has a variety of
different climates, thus
when the temperatures are
mild West Nile Virus can
be transmitted year round.
The West Nile Virus cases
are usually reported in
the late summer and early
fall. The best prevention
is to protect yourself year
round.
Health officials said that
there are four things to
watch for:
• Limit outdoor activities
from Dusk to Dawn as this
is the time that the
mosquitoes are most
active.
• When you are outside
during these time periods,
dress in long sleeves
and pants for the most
protection.
For added protection you
may spray your clothing
with repellent. Look for
insect repellents with Deet
and an ingredient and
always follow the label
instructions.

Dear Homeowner,
I wanted to take a moment of your time to let you know what is
happening in the Real Estate market here in the Katy area as well as
across the nation.
We have a Severe Shortage of inventory. We have more buyers than
we have homes for them and more coming. This gets me to why I am
writing to you. Do you know anyone who has thought of selling their
home but isn’t aware that NOW is the time to do it?
Valedictorian
Lauren Ashtyn Edwards
Let me give you an example of what I am talking about. Since January
1, 2013 in Green Trails, there have been 41 homes sold (25 of these
in less than 10 days.) There are 15 pending and only 5 active. That
means in that neighborhood there is around a 2 week supply. A
balanced market is 3 months inventory…See why NOW is the time
to list!!! Even Cinco Ranch only has a 4 week supply with all the new
construction.
Salutatorian
Madeline Marie Droog
Congratulations, Ben Skrabanek
The average closed price was $107 sq ft. The average list is $112 sq ft.
In 2012 the average sq ft sold was $99. So not only is there a shortage
but property values are going up as well.

After three months of
tireless work, the HCC
Newspring Business Plan
Competition
contestants
saw the first fruits of their
labor as winners were
announced at HCC's Spring
Branch Campus April 26.
Twenty-five teams worked
with advisers to craft their
business models and plans
for expansion. Ultimately,
five teams were selected as
finalists, winning large cash
prizes to turn their dreams
into realities.
"This is a unique
partnership that illustrates
what the private and
education sectors can accomplish working to-gether,
helping young companies
get started or grow," said
Jack Barry, retired CEO,
author, con-sultant and
competition leader.
In addition to being a
community effort with 60
volunteer business professionals through Newspring, the competition
also received generous
support from the University
of Phoenix, Wallis State
Bank, Amegy Bank, David
Regenbaum,
Constant
Contact, Richard Tyler
International, Inc., Houston
West Chamber of Com-
merce, Small Business
Today Magazine and the
HCC Foundation.
"Bringing education, experienced entrepreneurs for
mentorship and the might
of Houston's entrepreneurial
eco-system together to
empower these aspiring
and existing small business
owners is an example of how
we keep Houston working,"
said Dr. Zachary Hodges,
President, HCC Northwest.
Newspring, a faith-based
501(c)(3)
organization
aimed at the economic
development of the Spring
Branch area of Houston,
founded in 2006 by Robert
Westheimer, has organized
the competition for six
years working with HCC.
Newspring's goal is to foster
new and existing businesses
in Spring Branch. They are
able to do this through a large
team of business leaders
from Houston who serve
as mentors and advisers
to students who enter the
business plan competition.
"It is exciting to see
this competition grow
and mature. This year's
contestants
were
a
pleasure to mentor and
we are excited about their
business prospects." said
Westheimer.
The first place winner
of this year's business plan
competition and $12,000
is Kevin Doffing of Sam's
Safety Equipment. Doffing
took over Sam's Safety
Equipment from his father
in 2009 and has transformed
it from a single shop in
northwest Houston into
an expanding brand with
multiple locations. Sam's
Safety Equipment provides
Personal
Pro-tective
Equipment and Red Wing
boots to oil and gas workers.
His team advisers were John
Hartman and John Krebs.
The second place prize
winner is Elaine Mau of
Urban Leaf, taking home
$8,000 followed by Joe
Kappil representing Lone
Star RSD in third, earning
him $4,000. Honorable
mention was given to Tim
Arumburo of Blue Sky
Flight Services and Robert
Delossantos of Sky High

playoffs last weekend after defending state
champion Deer Park downed the Lady

But with the end of the spring season comes
the immediate realization that the Cinco
Ranch softball graduates only two players.
All Cinco Ranch eyes will be on the 2014
team after the 29-9 season.
Starting pitcher Kayla Ober will return
for her senior campaign. The Lady Cougars’
coordinated hitting attack also returns.
According to online stats compiled by
the Houston Chronicle, four Lady Cougars
hit .400 or better for the season, including
Hannah Esser, Brittany Nollkamper, Ober and
Karli Hamilton.
A solid defense, including catcher
Nollkamper and strong-armed shortstop
Savannah Warren, will also reappear.
Cinco Ranch could be a state- and

Great Gatsby is Luhrmann’s Decadent Tribute to the ‘20s
This summer I read “The
Great Gatsby” by Baz
Luhrmann. It is an excellent
book full of symbolism and
parties. One of the main
symbols in the book is green
lights. Green is the color of
hope and the green light on
the dock outside of Daisy’s
house shows the reader how
hopeful Jay Gatsby is that
he and she will get together
again. Gatsby resembles a
tan Leonardo DiCaprio and
lives in a house so big it looks
like it eats barns between
meals. He bought the house
just so he could throw giant
parties in the hopes that
Daisy might wander into
one and be impressed with
his shirts.
We don’t know why Daisy
is worth such obsession
other than that she is richer
than the ocean is wet and she
looks like Carey Mulligan
with blond hair. Gatsby and
Daisy used to date but he had
to go to war and she married
a very rich man named Tom
Buchanan because money
talks. Tom plays polo and
the field. The best scene in
the book comes when he
takes the narrator, who looks
like Spider-Man, to a small
apartment in New York City
that turns into a drunken
mess for the narrator, Nick.
It was only the second time
he ever got drunk and it was
with flappers, who were
like hipsters who actually
enjoyed dancing when music
came on.
They dance a lot because
this book has an excellent
soundtrack. Jay-Z and
Beyonce and Florence + The
Machine and the xx and Jack
White all add to a sense of
decadence during the roaring
’20s. Gatsby and Nick argue
about whether you can repeat
the past but in any case you
can go back to the future
with music like this. That
was another terrific book, by
the way. They say music is
the only guilt-free intoxicant
but usually in “The Great
Gatsby” it is combined with
others such as champagne
and gin and whisky and
cigars and shimmy-dancers.
It is all too much for Nick
in the end which is why
he is in a mental hospital
in the beginning, talking
to a psychiatrist who has
diagnosed him as depressed

and “morbidly alcoholic.”
All of that partying usually
leads to a hangover. For the
United States of America,
that was the Dust Bowl.
There were parts of
the story that were not as
effective. For one it took
143 minutes to get through
it, which is a lot, especially
when you have to read it
in one sitting because your
book report is due the next
day. The characters were
mostly three-dimensional
but so was a lot of other
stuff — everything was
three-dimensional, and you
feel after a while like this is
just a gimmick. Luhrmann’s
style is very flashy, with
lots of colors and motion,
and opulent settings and
costumes. In a book where
style always threatens to
overwhelm substance the
choice to go with all this
three-dimensionality risks
turning it into a cartoon.
Maybe Luhrmann wanted
it that way but it makes the
reader wonder whether the
publisher just wanted to
charge more for each copy.
In conclusion, I would
recommend “The Great

Gatsby” to anyone who
wants to learn about New
York City high society in the
’20s and there’s a pretty good
love story there as well. This
has been a classic book for
many years and many men
in particular enjoy it. Maybe
it is because there is a little
bit of Gatsby in anyone who
tried very hard to succeed
just to impress a woman who
winds up with the polo player
after all. Baz Luhrmann
proves that you cannot repeat
