They supply us with relevant information that allows us to respond rapidly to demands from the market. Martijn Kuiper, Sales Manager Our primary goal is to ensure that the entire supply chain is happy with our varieties and profits from them. This is why it is so important to set priorities when selecting from experimental varieties. A good shelf life all the way through the supply chain – from transport to the consumer – is absolutely essential. Other important selection criteria are a strong upright growth habit (v-shape) for less lateral stem breakage, the number of stems, and the presentation of the flower heads. Attention is also devoted to the number of cyathia (inflorescences) in proportion to the size of the flower head, as well as to the ease of cultivation. A strong root system also helps to prevent losses; this, too, is a criterion for assessment. A number of examples of this are included in the catalogue. 4 Test locations Test locations The Product Management Department works with ten partner growers in conducting various variety trials in Germany, Italy, The Netherlands and the United States. The Poinsettias have been tested at the Dan Schantz trial, the N.G. Heimos Trials, University of Guelph, North Carolina State University, University of Florida and at several different growers in the United States and Canada. Test location Bonfut This provides us with an abundance of information regarding how well a variety performs and meets requirements in a certain part of the world. The experimental varieties with the best results will then appear in the novelties catalogue. In addition to these growers’ tests, Beekenkamp also participates in the Poinsettia trials conducted by LTO-Nederland (the Dutch Agricultural and Horticultural Organisation). Every year, LTO-Nederland runs variety trials at two grower’s locations set up with the best 20–25 experimental varieties including reference varieties from various Poinsettia breeders. After all, competing in a top-level sport is a matter of honest comparison. These variety tests give reliable insights into developments in the market and also allow us to cooperate in promoting and developing Poinsettias! We include 2–3 of the most successful experimentals in the catalogue every year. This year, we are proud to present three new varieties: ‘Astro Red’, ‘Hera Red’ and ‘Pallas Red’. Test location Italia Shelf Life Room Martijn Kuiper with Paul from Dan Schantz Shelf Life Room This year, we invested in a shelf life room within our breeding facility. This allows us to follow the performances of our experimental varieties as well as the other cultivars in our assortment even better. We attach great importance to developing varieties that will perform well during the transport, retail and consumer phases. In addition to our own in-house tests, we also run tests in Flora Holland’s shelf life room. Findings from both tests give us a great deal of information to use in selecting the right varieties. We hope that these report findings will convince you of the quality of our products as well as give you the support needed in growing them. 5 Cuttings and production Africa and Mexico Cuttings and production in Mexico The Poinsettia cuttings are propagated at our partner location in Mexico where a number of greenhouses are especially equipped for the cultivation of Poinsettia mother plants. The basic material for mother plants used in production is sent from a quarantine greenhouse in the Netherlands to Mexico where it is grown on to produce mother plants for production. Cuttings are sent to our rooting location or directly to customers three times a week. Callused Cuttings We will offer callused cuttings this year for all varieties. The Mexican team is being trained in the proper way of callusing the Poinsettia cuttings, and packing and shipping them. Cuttings and production Africa The Poinsettia cuttings are propagated at our own location in Ethiopia where a number of greenhouses are especially equipped for the cultivation of Poinsettia mother plants. The basic material for mother plants used in production is sent from a quarantine greenhouse in the Netherlands to Ethiopia where it is grown on to produce enough mother plants for production. Here, cultivation, organisation and transport are all supervised by a team of Dutch managers. Cuttings are sent to our rooting location or directly to customers three times a week. 6 Potting instructions Potting instructions We recommend potting up the young plants upon arrival. During this procedure, the plugs should be lightly tamped down. If the weather is hot during the first few days, we advise the use of shading material when sunlight is brightest from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. so that the plants can acclimatise. For optimum rooting, we recommend using black pots or pots that admit no light. Pots that admit light will result in plants with fewer roots. Use pots with sufficient drainage holes. For optimum rooting, we advise overhead irrigation for the first 3–5 weeks. This results in stronger roots and better shoot emergence. Start by applying nutrients for vegetative growth: 1.5 EC and, once established, increase from 1.6 to 1.8 EC. Autumn Trials In weeks 45 and 46 of every year, during the Autumn Trials, we present our existing assortment and, of course, our new varieties. We would like to invite you, as well as your customer, to visit us at this time! 7 Astro Red (Pon 24) 8 Excellent shelf life Vigor: medium • Excellent shelf life NEW • Good branching • Suitable for pot sizes 5–10 inch • Suitable for both warmer and cooler climates • Natural flower date – 18 November • Reaction time – 7 weeks ® Astro XXX Red℗ Astro Red℗ Astro Red℗ Grower tips • Space out later to stimulate an upright growth habit (v-shape) • Don’t leave too many nodes when pinching (this variety branches easily) 9 Charon Red 10 Well branching and very uniform growth habit Vigor: tall • Nice flat flower heads • Very uniform • Good branching, nice v-shape • Suitable for pot sizes 5–10 inch • Natural flower date – 22 November • Reaction time – 7.5 weeks Charon Red℗ Charon Red℗ Charon Red℗ stem Grower tips • Charon is a vigorous variety.
