Vineland Middle Sept./Oct Vol. 38 No. 1 What a Year So Far! Last school year we received a $20,000 Verizon Grant and we are continuing to use this money for professional development for teachers. In June, we were awards another $20,000 Verizon grant! This one will be used to update our technology in the STEAM lab with 20 Android tablets and 20 loaded Dell desktops. This summer more students were involved in a summer manufacturing camp. It is the Manufacturing Institutes hope that students pursue courses in high school that enhance their experiences gained in middle school. Vineland Middle has also started a certified agriculture program, one of only two middle school level programs in the state of Colorado. It is a hands-on classroom where students take care of the animals, the greenhouse, and the gardens. The community has been big supporters with finances and information. VMS will be starting a Future Farmers of America chapter in September and hopefully, a rodeo club, too. We have a new dance team under the direction of Jennifer Davidson. The ladies have been practicing very hard and everyone is looking forward to watching their routines. So far, it has been an exciting start to the 2015-16 school year. We are all looking forward to what the rest of the year brings. Elected officials for 2015-16 are: Michelle Wells– President, Logan Stanley-Vice president, Gwen Paul– Secretary, Jacob Tracy– Treasurer, and Alison Sefcovic as Activity Chair. Our first event will be on October 1st. Pickle ball is the first tournament of the year. It is where we take part of the school day and have a competition that is sort of like a mini tennis game. We are responsible for working concessions, the courts, as well as keeping the crowd entertained. What I mean by that is we have events called Pickle Olympics, which is when we have crowd members do certain events that involve pickles. The first dance will be for Halloween and is schedules for October 29th. On that day we will also sponsor a costume contest. Other activities for Halloween include the Haunted Library and a pumpkin decorating contest. As you can see, STUCO is a superb class to help you mature and become more responsible. Now you know a slight bit about it, you should consider running for September’s Student of the Month By: Kenny Xayavong This September’s Student of the Month goes to Jada Potokar. Jada was chosen because she is very efficient when doing her work. She loves French Toast! Jada loves how it pairs with strawberries and its sugary taste! Jada wants to become a physical (The one on the right is a photo bomber!) therapist for kids. She loves helping younger kids and other people. Her favorite teachers are Mrs. Stanley and Mr. Mandarich. Her favorite subjects are Social Studies and Language Arts. If Jada could travel anywhere she would travel to London, England. October Student of the Month By: Kathleen Irvin Kinley Gomez is a seventh grade student at Vineland Middle School. She was chosen as October Student of the Month because she strives for personal best. Ms. Frank, Mrs. Knecht, Ms. Richie, and Mrs. Stanley are Kinley's favorite teachers. One day, Kinley would like to travel to California. Her favorite food is macaroni and cheese! During her free-time, she enjoys playing sports. Science and math are Kinley's favorite subjects. When she grows up she hopes to be a biologist. Vineland’s New Music Teacher By Kara Alexander Please welcome Vineland’s new music teacher, Mr. Borntrager. Mr. Borntrager is very friendly and knows what he is doing when it comes to music. Nathan Borntrager was born on August 20th in Elizabeth, Colorado. Ever since the 7th grade, Mr. Borntrager wanted to be a musician. His favorite instrument to play is the tuba or the bass trombone. Although his favorite instrument is the canon from 1812, yes an actual canon. Mr. Borntrager went to college at the University of Northern Colorado. He enjoyed college along with high school. They were both very busy years, but it was worth it because now he gets to do what he loves. He was a slightly above average student. His favorite subject in school was band along with many others; he also learned the most from band because it taught him about self discipline. Mr. Borntrager’s strengths include that he is self confident and always tries to push himself to do more. He is a people pleaser and always tries to make people happy, which is his weakness. So far he enjoys teaching at Vineland Middle School. I asked Mr. Borntrager why he chose to teach music. He replied with “It’s what I love to do. I love to teach and I love music, so why not put the two together?” I also asked why he applied at Vineland Middle. Some of the biggest challenges in his job are that a lot of his students are shy and unsure of themselves and their abilities. It’s hard to get them to not be shy or unsure. He requires his students to try, not worry about failure just to pick themselves back up and learn from their experience. Mr. Borntrager thinks that most kids (even kids who have never played an instrument) should take on an instrument because it teaches many valuable skills for the future. According to Borntrager don’t start playing the oboe or bassoon as a beginner, and a tip for you beginners, PRACTICE! Also another tip from Mr. Borntrager listen to professionals sing or play instruments to get the hang of things, just like watching a professional baseball player or golfer swing. If you plan on joining band or choir just expect to work hard and if you do work hard the more fun it will become. Mr. Borntrager is a very busy man, just last year he traveled to 16 different cities around the world. Mr. Borntrager’s favorite colors include purple, orange, and blue. His favorite sports teams are the Denver Broncos and the Colorado Rockies. If he won 10 million dollars, the first thing he would do is pay off his school loans. His favorite food is chicken tortellini alfredo, Christmas is his favorite holiday because of the atmosphere. When Mr. Borntrager gets older, he wants to become a dad and family man. His favorite quote; “Friendship is unnecessary like philosophy, like art...it has no survival value; rather it is one of those things that gives value to survival.” -C.S. Lewis. Welcome to Vineland Middle! Welcome To Vineland Middle School Joni Mandarich By: Bella Montoya Mrs. Mandarich is one of our new staff members who teaches 6th and 8th grade science, and 6th grade GTT. She went to college at CSU-Pueblo and graduated with a Masters of Education in English Language. Mrs. Mandarich says she has always wanted to be a teacher because she wanted to be positive and inspire kids, the way her teachers did for her. She has been teaching for a total of 8 years. One thing Mrs. Mandarich would like people to know is that she believes in hands-on learning and tries to teach interactive lessons as much as possible. During her free time, Mrs. Mandarich mostly likes to spend time with her family, But she also likes photography. When asked if there was a book she could read over and over, she said Heart of Surrender by Mother Teresa. She enjoys playing and watching sports live, but not on television. Mrs. Mandarich’s favorite song is “Wake Me Up” by Avicii. Mrs. Mandarich said if she was stranded on an island and could only bring one item, it would be a picture of her family because they are her motivation. When it came to the question ‘what is your fondest school memory’ Mrs. Mandarich laughed and responded “ My friends and I may have stolen our high school vice principal’s car, taken it to lunch, then brought it back!” Oooh! We are going to really like Mrs. Mandarich! A New Guy in Town By Risa Myers Dakota Stupar is a new staff member to the Vineland Middle School community. He is a para-pro at our school. What an awesome addition to Vineland Middle. We welcome him here! Miss Davidson By Josiah Montoya Miss Davidson is one of our newest teachers at Vineland Middle School. She teaches both 7th and 8th grade mathematics and also happens to be our new dance coach at the school. She went to CSUPueblo for her mathematics bachelor degree. However, Miss Davidson said she would still teach other subjects especially in the Technology range. Miss Davidson was also a student teacher at Vineland. She even once was a Vineland pirate and had Mrs. Knecht as her math teacher. Her favorite subject in school and still is happens to be math. When she came back to Vineland Middle, she had a flashback. She was a Vineland student, and the reason for her wanting to be a teacher at Vineland? She wanted to teach at the place that inspired her to be a teacher. Miss Davidson also went to Pueblo County High School. She lives in Pueblo and has two dogs. One is named Saber and the other Bo. If she could travel anywhere in the world, she would travel to Alaska or Ireland. Her preferred food is anything BBQ and she adores nature. Mr. Eades By Jacob Tracey One of the newest features to the Vineland Middle School staff, Matt Eades is ready for this exciting school year. Mr. Eades has pursued his career as a teacher and his passion of impacting students in a positive way. Mr. Eades stated that he truly enjoys helping students and having weekends, holidays, and summers off of work. Mr. Eades is highly qualified to teach at VMS. He earned his bachelors degree in liberal arts from our very own Colorado State University-Pueblo. Mr. Eades is a true alumni to Pueblo County. He graduated from Pueblo County High School. He played high school tennis and basketball. Now, he is the coach of both the basketball and baseball teams. His number one goal this year is to become part of the Vineland community and family, and lend a hand to all students. In Mr. Eades free time he loves watching his favorite TV series “Friends” with his puppy Bridgette. So as you can see, Matt Eades will make a great addition to the Vineland staff. Vineland Volleyball By Sloan Garcia Vineland volleyball players have something special going for them this volleyball season. It’s not the wins or the losses but a bond, a bond that couldn’t be more positive. If it’s not cheering one another on, then it’s reassuring each other that we are okay after a mistake. Vineland doesn’t have a volleyball team, but, a volleyball family. This 2015 season coach is Angelina Gorham. This is her first time being the Pirate volleyball coach. Coach Gorham says “I am excited about this season. We have a lot of talent.” And “Work hard every day.” The most valuable player is yet to be decided. Anyone can fill that place. With confidence and hard work these girls are fire on the court. Most of the time the girls play two games a week; Mondays, and Wednesdays. Their next game will be Wednesday the ninth of September. The varsity a team will be playing at liberty point at 5:00 pm. The girls work hard and are in for the win. The varsity A volleyball team has seven players. The girls are really excited about this season and think they will do great. They are very confident and excited for this new season. They have started off strong and will end strong. Overall, I think this volleyball team talent and are in for a great season. They are very talented and are in for a win. Vineland Football By Darian Torrez Vineland’s football team does some fun football actions throughout every week. The main activities that happen in the football program are: play games, have fun, and learn from your actions and watch what the coach tells you, and play hard every chance you get. Vineland also encourages anyone who plays to be a good sportsman and to never give up. The games are scheduled for every Thursday and a couple on Saturday. The team is already three games in to the season, on a seven game season. The games are mostly held at home except for three. If you want to see the schedule for Vineland football go to vlm.district 70.org, and click league schedules on the right-hand column. Also, for the people that don’t know, Vineland used to play for the small school division but got brought up this year to the big school division including teams like Corwin, LPI, Heaton, PAA, Skyview, and Roncolli. The coaching staff and players are another important part of the team. The coaching staff consists of head coach Gerald Aragon, and the assistant coaches are Mr. Radiff and Carl Messenger. One player said, “The coaches have helped me out a lot”. The players on the team have to be student athletes, and a student athlete means to take school first and sports second. They cant just remember their school work either they have to remember all the plays to the position that they play. For the offense, the main coach is Coach Radiff. He controls the whole offense and helps demonstrate some of the plays that are confusing. Then, on defense, the main coach is Carl Messenger and he sets up the plays and tells us what to do against the offense. Some of the offensive players are Darian Torres, Brad Carter, Bryce Singletary, RaHeim Holloman, Rocco Bottini, and Jose Santillan. And on defense there are Darian Torres, John Owens, Rocco Bottini, Brandon Clift, and Charles Mculley-Sedillo. Vineland’s football program is fun and encouraging. We are a hard working team and respectful to all opponents. As we break it down in practice and games we say “123 pirates 456 family”. Mesa Madness By: Michelle Wells In case you didn’t know, softball is one of our main sports at Vineland. We have been a sport for years here. Softball is a sport combined with Pleasant View and Connect Middle School. Together we are called Mesa. This is a great experience for girls who don’t know everything about the game to learn, and for girls that know a slight bit to learn more. As well as learning, it is an excellent competitive experience. If you’re a fan of competitive sports this might be for you. Also, improving is one of the main goals. No matter if you’ve been playing for 10 years or if it’s your first year everyone can improve. Each practice or game helps girls see what they are doing wrong, so they can correct it in the future. The coaches making all this possible are Pam Houpts and Teresa Peralta. Dedication to the team is one of their main priorities. If you listen they will consistently tell you what to do different. The teams are split into two with a Varsity and a Junior Varsity. Both teams have the same concept- become skilled and advance on. It benefits them by playing against girls at the same level as they are, or somewhat better. Our practices are mainly four days a week, every week, Monday through Thursday. On the days we do practice it starts at 3:45 to 5:45. During this time the players are to be very supportive. Game days usually vary. Mostly they are on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturday mornings. J.V games are always first and Varsity is after. There are only about four innings. In each inning there is a 3, 6, 9 rule. Meaning if there are 3 outs, 6 runs scored, or 9 batters have batted we trade places. Games also have a time limit, and once it expires we’re done. Bonding is in addition to everything we do. We get to know one another and get along better as teammates. We may go to different school now but we still play on the same team and we may go to high school together. This is a great way to get a head start for when we get there. It’s better to get along because on the ball field you have to work together. Without teamwork you can’t go any where. As you can see softball here is enjoyable, competitive, and, an active sport. Perhaps now you’ll take playing into consideration. Vineland’s Soccer News By Wyatt Schwartz Vineland and PV’s co-op soccer team will be starting up soon. They practice Monday through Thursday at PV. On September 19th, they will have their first game. The game will be held at Langoni. After the regular games, there will be playoffs at Dutch Clark Stadium. Playoffs will start in late October into early November. There will be some changes in uniforms and general procedures. The league rules have also changes to make it safer and more fun. Procedures have been set in place so that referees carry scorecards that they turn in to keep track of the stats. The uniforms no longer say the school’s name. They now say the mascot’s name. If you have a little brother or sister, recreation league begins September 12th, Support our Pueblo teams! Cross Country, the Winning Sport By Owen Galvez Cross Country is a conjoined sport with Vineland, Pleasant View, and Connect. Our school runners are Wilson Mayfield, Nick Kovacich, Isabella Paul, and Owen Galvez. These runners range from 6th grade to 8th grade. The coach is Mrs. Jeni Ham she is a teacher at North Mesa. This is her first time coaching cross country. She ran track before but never cross country. “I believe this year will be good, this is a new experience for me and I still have to see what my athletes will do”. Some of our star athletes are; Jocelyn Gallomordo, Caden Weal, and Isabella Paul. These athletes are hardworking and always thriving to succeed. The hardest part of cross-country has to be the hills, you have to use a lot of your energy to go up them. The distance is only two miles. Our team does very well especially Caden Weal. Your health condition has to be extremely strong. You need to be in shape because two miles feels like forever if your not and the hills will eat you up. When Weather Matters By Sam Reap Hurricane season hit it’s peak on September 10th, which means a hurricane could occur at any time. Hurricanes can be extremely dangerous, especially if you live in hurricane alley. Hurricane Alley is where hurricanes are most common. When they strike, they can cause wind damage, flooding, and even hail damage. One of the most destructive hurricanes was Hurricane Katrina, which caused $108 billion in damage. At least 1,245 died in the hurricane. If you are ever caught in a hurricane there are some steps you should follow. When a warning goes out about a hurricane in the area where you are, you should evacuate. If you decide to stay or were unable to evacuate,it is important to be prepared with enough food and water to last several days. Electricity often goes out during a hurricane so you should purchase a hurricane lamp for lighting. Hurricanes are very strong and can cause windows to break, water to enter the building, and that causes the roof to become weak. During a hurricane, you should always stay indoors and stay away from windows. If you ever live near high hurricane areas or just go to a resort for vacation that hurricanes frequent, make sure to have an evacuation plan. For more information you can look on the website hurricanealley.com. They provide updates on all hurricane and cyclone activity, plus help with advice on hurricane preparedness. The movie is rated PG-13 , directed by Josh Trank, and based on the “Fantastic Four” comics by Marvel. In the movie, four teenagers are transported to an alternate universe where unworldly things exist. When the team embarks on the journey home, they realize they have left a member behind. Find out what happens as they try to save the left-behind member of the Fantastic Four. I give this movie a five out of five stars. This is one of my favorite movies. I enjoyed the story plot and would watch it again and again, and again! The Girl Who Was Supposed to Die By Dixie Stewart The theme of this book is “the truth isn’t the same for everyone.” This fictional story is a teen thriller written by April Henry. In this story, Cadence (Cady) wakes up in an unknown place. She has no idea who she is, how old she is, or how she got there. Cady manages to find a car and tried to drive to a town. Cady meets Ty at a McDonalds. He takes her to his apartment, and she meets James. Together, the three teens search for answers. They find out many secrets about Cady and her family that even she didn’t know. Cady is reunited with her family, and they explain what happened. I enjoyed this story very much. It was exciting, dramatic, and it had a great plot. There is a great amount of suspense; it made it really hard to put the book down. Anyone that loves drama, suspense, mystery, and an overall great story will want to read this book. I recommend this book for ages ten and up. You can download this book to your tablet, smart phone, or e-reader. This story is available on Audible and the iBooks app. The iBooks app is only available on iPhone. You can find a paper copy of this book in the following places: Barnes and Noble, Amazon.com, and eBay. Tired of the boring old video games? Well, you don’t have to be bored anymore. The most popular genres in today’s culture are pop, country and rap. This will include the top artists if that genre and their top songs. These are some great songs with some great meaning. The Weekend and their song “I Can’t Feel my Face” is an upbeat part song.. This song is about a guy who loves this girl so much that when he is with her all he cares about is her. He is so focused that he can’t feel his face. The next genre is real popular on the countryside. The artist is Chris Janson and his song “Buy Me a Boat”. This amazing tune is about a redneck guy that all he wants is to have a boat. But there is one problem, he has no money to buy the boat so he goes around asking people for money. It might sound unpleasant now but once you listen, you’ll like it. The last genre might be for some people and not for others. One of the top rap tunes is “Trap Queen” by Fetty Wap. This jam is about a guy that has a girl that is way too good for him. He talks about how he is so lucky to have her and how he is going to keep her and treat her right. It is a good tune if you like rap. Those are the top genres for 2015 so far, but the year is far from over. If you have some suggestions for us to feature here on the Vineland pages, just go to Ms. Frank’s class and leave us a message. You can go to www.youtube.com and watch any of the above mentioned songs, and give them a comment down below the video. So enjoy! A Photo that Matters By Dylan Smart This picture shows the second tower of the World Trade Center getting hit by a Boeing 767-223ER. This picture is influential as it sparked the ongoing war currently going on in the Middle East. This picture forever changed the world. The big man in charge of the operation was Osama Bin Laden. The motive of the attack was America’s apparent “hatred” towards Islam. The attacks were carefully planned out, and a skilled group of individuals were selected to carry it out. The two pilots were Hani Hanjour and Nawaf alHasmi. This attack took place during the morning of September 11, 2001. The attacks were planned 5 years before in 1996. We still remember the attacks to this day as they have affected every American’s life in some way. Months after the attacks, the stock market and economic services were still feeling the impact. The attacks caused 2,996 deaths in the World Trade Centers, but 343 firefighters, 23 police officers, 37 port authority officers, and 8 EMTs were also killed. 40 percent of Americans across the country experienced significant symptoms of stress related to the attacks. That is a total of 133.98 million people. That is a little over the amount of people currently living in Japan. As you can see, most Americans suffer either economically or emotionally resulting in the September 11th attacks. Who Made That? By Colt V Have you ever wondered who made the first car or when it was made? How about the model type, how it works, the evolution, and the inspiration of it being created? Well, if that’s the case, you chose the right article to read! First, the earliest car actually wasn’t called a car. It was called the automobile and it was named the Benz Patent-Motorwagon, pretty much the outline of the regular car in the future at that time. The creator of this transportation is Karl Benz from Germany and it was invented in 1885 to 1886. The inspiration of the first automobile came from a type of bike with a motor engine on it. Then it sort of developed into an automobile. There have been over 500 different models made in total ever since. Cars, since and now, even in this era, have changed massively and evolved, and are still evolving to this day. The cars these days have evolved by having faster working engines with way more durable tires and better passenger protection and more gas with longer ranges to travel. Also, who knows, we might actually evolve far enough to make real flying cars soon or in the distant future. One last fun fact, did you know what the most popular car company is currently? Toyota fills that spot and a poular model for Toyota is the Hyundai Sonata. The Hyundai Sonata has two turbo-charged engines for fuel efficient power with a panoramic sunroof and an Android which gives you the ability to drive the car hands free. The Electric Guitar By Ian Habich Memory Lane By: Jada Potokar Have you ever wondered how the electric guitar works? Well, the electric guitar is one of the most important inventions of the 20th century. But when the electric guitar came out in the 1930’s, many musicians didn’t ever think it would be one of the most important instruments of our time. Two men by the name of George Beauchamp and Adolph Rickenbacker were the brains of inventing the electric guitar. George Beauchamp was a talented musician born in Texas on March 18, 1899. Adolph Rickenbacker was an Electrical Engineer born April 3, 1886 in Basil, Switzerland. Together, they had ideas about the electric guitar. Beauchamp and Rickenbacker started experimenting in the 1920’s. After about ten years, the first recording of the electric guitar came out. Some of the features they put on the electric guitar were pickups, control knobs, speakers and an output plug-in. All of these things working together make up what we know today as the modern electric guitar. The electric guitar today is a series of inputs that allow the strings to get pushed through the speaker. The invention of the guitar also brought different recording styles. The electric guitar is kind of like one big magnetic field. When you pluck or play the strings, they create vibrations. Under the strings there are pickups which pickup the vibrations. The pickups gather the vibrations by using electro magnets which produce a magnetic field that surrounds the pickups. The sound then goes onto the control knobs which control volume and sound, like clarity. Finally, it moves from the control knobs to the output plug-in. From there it runs down the cable and into the speaker. This, then, creates vibrations and therefore you have sound. Electric guitars are a very important invention of the last 100 years. They have made music what it is today. Adolph Rickenbacker and George Beauchamp are two historic men we should give our thanks to. About 95 years ago children didn’t have electronics to entertain themselves. During the 20’s and 30’s, the effects of the ongoing Great Depression were a struggle on many families. Young children would usually only receive passed down toys from their parents. An example of this would be a wooden doll from the 1900’s. Older children would commonly spend time outside, hanging out with friends. Although some cheaper toys that could be found were the Teddy bear and Raggedy-Ann doll. As well as the yo-yo and toy car. More expensive options for families did exist. For younger members, tricycles were great. Not only this, but toy trains and the newest wagons could be found in wealthy families. Forms of entertainment for older children ranged from the ‘Morse Code Telegraph learning machine’ to the ‘Electric joke shock’. The ‘Mores Code Telegraph Learning Machine’ was often used by adults as well as kids. It was seen as a tool to understand the telegraph communication system. This was a new advance in technology that many people didn’t know how to use. Contrary to this, the ‘Electric Joke Shock’ was a toy that only children would use. This was the first of many joke shock pranks. In history, kids may have not had access to technology like we do today, but they always had ways to keep themselves entertained and busy. Vineland Viewpoint (The following articles are opinion in nature and should be read as such. No one person, group or idea is being targeted.) By Rumor Has It What Do You Do? Mikayla Matrtellaro By Nicole Huff Rumor has it that if you are out and about on September 19, you may hear people talking like pirates. It may seem very weird at first, but it is actually National Talk Like a Pirate Day. This is day where you use pirate slang. (Arrrrg, booty, matey, and etc.) Not everyone knows about this day but those who do should really try to actually sound like a pirate. It may sound out of place but it can sure be fun if you tried it. The day was created in 1995 by John Baur and Mark Summers. It all came to be when they were playing racket ball and got hurt. They started to say “arrrrg” from the pain. They got the idea from that and as a joke called it Talk Like a Pirate Day to lighten the mood of their pain. Rumor has it the day was originally supposed to be June 6th but June 6 has a different national holiday. To make it official they sent a letter to columnist Dave Barry who loved the idea. Barry wrote a column on it to get more promotion. That helped a lot to make it more public. Isn’t it funny how we are the Pirates and there is a whole day devoted to talking like one. This may not be a shocking rumor but it is kind of cool because Vineland is the school of Pirates and this day is about pirates. Do you know someone who is suicidal, or perhaps, are you? Wether it is you or someone you know, you should still know how to handle it. This is a problem that needs to be taken care of properly. It doesn’t matter who you are, most of us know at least one person who is suicidal. The problem is that not many of us know how to deal with it. “Suicide is not chosen; it happens when pain exceeds resources for coping with pain” People contemplating suicide are not crazy, bad, or weak. They just do not know how to cope with their pain. If it is an emergency, seek help immediately by calling 991, go to the emergency room, or call the Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273-8255, twenty-four hours a day seven days a week. Other tips are to call a counselor that deals with suicide. Tell someone, anyone, so they can find you help. Stay away from things and people that might harm you. Sometimes it is as simple as getting the right kind of medications. Other times, it is more serious and you need to seek professional help. If you are someone who doesn’t know where to go and you have tried talking about it, keep trying. If no one has listened to you already someone eventually will. If you stop talking about it you could cause more of a problem than what already exists. Don’t give up, giving up is the worst thing you could do. Suicide is a big problem. Everyday one hundred and twelve Americans take their own life. People need to pay attention, be aware, and it needs to be talked about more in schools and at home. Suicide comes in at number four on the list of things that kill five to fourteen year olds. Some times it is easy to tell if someone is suicidal and other times it is a bit harder. If some one is hurting themselves, then they probably are. Suicide usually starts with depression. Nine times out of ten depression is avoidable. Depression can be started by bullying, so if we don’t bully the depression rate could go down. If you understand suicide then it is easier to stop. Why Do Dogs Behave That Way? By Carson Dodds If you are a dog owner, you might frequently ask yourself, why does my dog behave that way? First off, you might see your dog or dogs chasing other dogs, people, cats and cars. This is because dogs have a high prey drive. This means that they like to hunt. This is also why, when they chase, they can get very aggressive. You might also want to have a quiet day, but that ends when your dog howls as loud as it can. The reason dogs howl or bark is because that is their form of communication. So that just means your dog is trying to be sociable. There is one more thing that you probably ask yourself. Why does my dog chew on everything? The answer to this question goes back to their roots. When dogs were non-domestic, they would have to hunt down their prey, so when they caught them, they would chew and chew the ripped off flesh to be fed. Over many generations, dogs became adjusted like growing their big teeth. This is why dogs chew on everything. So, the next time you are frustrated by torn-up pillows, constant barking, or your brand new shoes getting chewed up, just remember that is the innate way dogs behave! Moments That Matter By Hannah DeLaTorre Moments that matter to people my age mostly involve sports. Kids my age enjoy sports and sometimes it’s the only activity we like to do. One of my most important moments is scoring in a game and being acknowledged for helping the team. It can be the winning point that puts you ahead and has everyone cheering for you. That moment that your team pats you on the back and you’re proud of yourself. No matter what sport it is, any person who has scored a point has to admit, it feels pretty good. Whether it is a three-point shot from the corner, a hit into left field, or a soccer ball hitting the back of the net, it’s moments like that that matter to students at Vineland Middle School.
