Introduction
The requirement for security, control and high levels of flexibility has increased considerably.
This applies in particular to doors with many or frequently changing users such as: exterior access doors, archives, server rooms etc… An extension of the mechatronic systems is necessary to
fulfil these requirements.

Product description
Just like with any other achievements, the wheel of time keeps on turning, producing new inventions and new features. New scientific and technological findings are increasingly linked to
produce synergies, or to compensate for vulnerabilities, and closing and locking technologies
are no exceptions to the rule of change. Purely mechanical closing and locking systems are too
inflexible and expensive for today’s applications for the most part.
The biggest benefit to locking technology that we gain by combining mechanical and electronic
systems, is more flexible locking organization. Flexibility is expressed in the speed with which
required changes can be performed, such as blocking a lost key, or authorizing a new key, etc.
This reduces the risk caused by a lost key to a minimum. The subsequent costs are extremely
low, as you only need to replace one key, rather than the cylinder, or even the whole system.
The KEK genie BS product is your ticket to the world of KESO mechatronic locking systems – a
perfect combination of mechanics and electronics.
3.1
KESO KEK genie BS Function
3.1.1
KESO KEK genie BS Electronic Function
Two characteristics are critical to identifying access authorizations. One the one hand, the mechanical key has to align the pins correctly, and on the other, the storage medium embedded in
the key is read and compared with the electronics. If both characteristics match, the cylinder
can be actuated and the door opened.
When the key is inserted into the cylinder, and the wake-up contact in the electronics is activated, the first step is to check the battery power. Then the electronics read the storage medium embedded in the key, and compare the data content of the key with that of the electronics. In case of a match, the electronics release the cylinder. As a second check, the mechanical
side must also match. Only if both test characteristics are perfect, can the key be turned and the
door opened. Following this, the action is stored on the EEProm where it can be read as an event
at a later time. (event logging only available with PC versions)
Communications between the key with the embedded storage medium and the KESO KEK genie BS cylinder are contactless. The mechanics on the key can be used for other cylinders in the
same system.
3.1.2
Description KESO KEK genie BS locking cylinder
The KESO KEK genie BS cylinder is based on a traditional, mechanical cylinder with 15 drivers on
each locking side. In addition to mechanical locking, the mechatronic side of the KESO KEK genie BS cylinder includes an actuator comprising an antenna, a wake-up mechanisum and a motor that either blocks or releases the rotor. The mechatronic side of the KESO KEK genie BS cylinder is identifiable by the blue antenna cover. A blue connecting cable (L = approx. 230 mm)
with a 6-pin connector extends from the KESO KEK genie BS cylinder. This cable is attached to
the electronics.

3.1.3
Description of Mechanics
The KESO KEK genie BS system is based on mechanical locking with pins and drivers in the cylinder. On top of mechanical locking, there is also electronic locking which adds more flexibility to
mechanical locking. This symbiosis of mechanical and electronic locking only comes into its
own when you consider the locking options that electronics give you. Mechanical locking provides the locking technology underpinnings.
3.1.4
Description of Electromechanics
The electronics module has its own internal power supply. The electronics are activated by a key
sensor when a key is inserted. The electronics start to transmit radio waves via the antenna to
the KESO KEK key. If the key is identified, the electro-motor is switched on to turn the cam
through 90°. This positions the cams horizontally to the stop thus allowing for mechanical unlocking and rotation.

Applications
You can fit KESO KEK genie BS cylinders to one or more doors; depending on the application
and the number of keys, you can choose either the PC or Home version.
4.1
Home System Applications
The KESO KEK genie BS Home System is deployed as a stand-alone system for e.g. detached
houses or apartment blocks. Smaller companies often use the system when letting hobby facilities or storage rooms. It is used wherever the owner can easily manage key assignments.
4.2
PC System Applications
The KESO KEK genie BS PC System is also deployed in e.g. detached houses or apartment blocks,
but mainly used by companies where the customer expects a higher level of flexibility. The KESO
K4 software guarantees this flexibility. The KESO KEK Programmer PPG V1, KESO KEK Programmer PPG V2, KESO KEK Programmer USB, or the mutation key, all support targeted programming. KESO KEK genie BS cylinders let you manage up to 8,000 keys and 500 events.
4.3
PC Time System Applications
The KESO KEK genie BS PC Time System is used by larger companies and for more complex
building systems where time plays an important role, such as in public institutions like universities, airports, or hospitals. KESO KEK genie BS PC cylinders let you manage up to 8,000 keys, 500
events and 16 time groups.

Application Site
For humid or refrigerated areas, direct exposure to weather conditions, near salt water, or for
applications in aggressive, corrosive environments, electronic subassemblies must be engineered according to particular specifications. This also applies to electronic subassemblies for
use in dusty environments. If needed, take measures to protect the electronic subassembly
against the elements and dust. For use in environments with a particularly high level of electromagnetic interference, custom specifications must be defined for the electronic subassembly.
Customer's specifications must be discussed with us prior to order.

Electronics in Fitting – Battery Version EG.707
KESO KEK genie BS is now even more attractive thanks to the availability of electronics in the fitting.
Visible installation on the inside of the door above the KESO KEK genie BS
cylinder offers many advantages, such as e.g. direct mounting of security
escutcheons with the new fitting type.
Fitting covers are available in various versions, Euro profile, EuroSwiss
profile and dummy. The cover is secured by means of a screw.
The communications connector in the face plate is protected by a
corresponding cover.

Stainless Steel Long-Escutcheon Type Security Fitting EG.086
The stainless steel security escutcheon with integrated KESO KEK electronics is a tried-andtrusted security product characterized by a successful combination of excellent security and
timeless, elegant design.
The external fascia can be fitted with a handle or a fixed thumb turn.
The zinc die cast base plate and hardened drill-open protection
plate are invisibly screw-connected to the stainless steel cover.
The internal fascia comprises a galvanized steel base plate with
screwed through connection, 2 x M8, and the stainless steel cover
clipped on.
The stainless steel security cover G.086 is designed to house the
optional electronics. The electronics are safely located under the
internal fascia.
Power is provided by a battery pack, which is also located below the
internal fascia. The clip-on internal fascia allows for easy
replacement of the battery pack.

The stainless steel security escutcheon with integrated KESO KEK electronics is a tried-andtrusted security product characterized by a successful combination of excellent security and
timeless, elegant design.
The solid external fascia can be fitted with a handle or a fixed
thumb turn. The cylinder is protected by a solid stainless steel
cylinder guard and a hardened bronze protection plate.
The internal fascia comprises a galvanized steel base plate with
screwed through connection, 2 x M8 and 1 x M6, and the stainless
steel cover clipped on.
The stainless steel security cover G.087 is designed to house the
optional electronics. The electronics, with which the KESO KEK
genie BS cylinder can communicate via a plugged connection, are
located safely under the internal fascia.
Power is provided by a battery pack, which is also located below
the internal fascia. The clip-on internal fascia allows for easy replacement of the battery pack.

Stainless Steel Long-Escutcheon Type EG.088
The stainless steel security escutcheon with integrated KESO KEK electronics is a tried-andtrusted security product characterized by a successful combination of excellent security and
timeless, elegant design.
The solid external fascia can be fitting with a handle or a
fixed thumb turn. The cylinder is protected by a solid
stainless steel cylinder guard and a hardened drill protection
plate. A hardened drill protection plate that covers the
whole external fascia area is worked into the underside of
the exterior fascia.
The internal fascia comprises a galvanized steel base plate
with screwed through connection, 2 x M8 and 1 x M6, and
the stainless steel cover clipped on.
The stainless steel security cover G0.088 is designed to
house the optional electronics.
The electronics, with which the KESO KEK genie BS cylinder
can communicate via a plugged connection, are located
safely under the internal fascia.
Power is provided by a battery pack, which is also located
below the internal fascia. The clip-on internal fascia allows
for easy replacement of the battery pack.

Long Escutcheon Fitting EG.089
The security long escutcheon with integrated KESO KEK electronics is a tried-and-trusted security product, characterized by a timeless, elegant design.
The external fascia can be fitting with a handle or a fixed thumb turn.
The internal fascia comprises a nickel plated zinc die cast shell which
is connected to the internal fascia by means of three M6 screws.
The electronics, with which the KESO KEK genie BS cylinder can
communicate via a plugged connection, are located safely under the
internal fascia.
Power is provided by a battery pack, which is also located below the
internal fascia.

Electronics – Mains VersionEG.708
KESO KEK genie BS is now even more attractive thanks to the availability of electronics for
12-24V.
The face plate housing comprises antistatic plastic mounted using the
two M4 screws and the stretching thread inserts.
The electronics can be installed in the face plate, surface mounted, via a
top-hat rail, or using the practical terminal box.
One of many advantages is that the mains version can use 12V or
24 volts and can control a variety of devices thanks to the integrated relay.
The mains version can also be networked with KESO KEK net.

The KESO KEK emergency power supply is connected to the mains power supply. If the mains
power drops off, the internal relay is switched and the power supply is ensured for approx. 24
hours * via the battery.
* Important note:
This time value is approximate; depending on the power consumption and the use
of connected devices, battery power can last longer or be exhausted more quickly!

End of battery life detection
When a key is inserted, the battery voltage is automatically measured for each action. The system indicates a drop in battery performance in three stages. Please inform your end users that
the system administrator must be notified when any of these indicators occurs. This ensures
that you can change the battery in good time.
1.
Indicator shortly before end of battery life
The key must be inserted twice in order to turn the key.
Measures and responses
When this indicator occurs, a qualified person should change the battery as soon as
possible. If the cylinder is exposed to extreme temperatures it is advisable to change
the battery immediately.
2.
Indicator immediately before end of battery life
The key must be inserted four times in order to turn the key.
Measures and responses
When this indicator occurs, the battery must be replaced IMMEDIATELY by a qualified
person. If the battery is not replaced immediately, this can result in the KESO KEK genie
BS cylinder only responding to mechanical opening.
3.
Indicators at end of battery life
The cylinder assumes the preset position, e.g. electronically open or electronically
closed. If you do not specify the status at end of battery life when placing your order,
the KESO KEK genie BS cylinder will be delivered with the default powerless open state
at end of battery life. If you have a PC version, you can change the powerless state at any
time using the KESO K4 software.
Measures and responses
If the preset position is <Powerless Status - closed>, the cylinder can only be actuated
from the mechanical side at end of battery life. If the preset position is <Powerless
Status - open>, the actuator is switched off at end of battery life and the KEK genie BS
cylinder will only check the mechanical function.

Battery change
A KESO key solution center must be capable of servicing the KESO KEK genie BS cylinder independently, and of maintaining the KESO KEK genie BS cylinder.
The battery lifetime is approx. 40,000 cycles or approx. 2 years. The battery must be replaced at
the latest when these thresholds are reached.
The KESO KEK genie BS cylinder should be serviced at least once a year. This includes checking
the battery status and cylinder action.
Never use force when separating or joining materials. Excessive force leads to damage!
When removing the battery, make sure that the cable is not stripped, broken or
jammed. Defective cables on the KESO KEK genie BS cylinder cannot be replaced. The
cylinder becomes useless and must be returned to KESO (this does not constitute a
guarantee case!). Never use hammers or other heavy tools for installation/deinstallation.
Knocking the cylinder body or its individual parts could destroy the precision mechanical parts and electronics.

Important notes on batteries
Important note: The battery powers the electronics. Each battery has a different operating voltage. For trouble-free battery use, make sure that the battery voltage is at least
1.45V! The stated battery data are guidelines! KESO AG cannot guarantee these values.
You can return batteries to KESO for professional disposal. In all other cases, please observe relevant, national laws and provisions.

Installation and assembly must be performed by authorised KESO solution partners.
Observe the installation guide; your warranty is voided in case of improper use or

Wiring
21.1.1 Basic principles
To ascertain the cable lengths and network topology to use, consider the possible distances between the required voltage and the access points in question.
21.1.2 Locking systems
The power consumption ratings for locking components, that is, electrical openers, drive cylinders, motor locks, switching locks etc. are quoted in the data sheets for these products.
21.2
Installing the KESO KEK genie BS cylinder
KESO KEK genie cylinders are easy to handle and install. The basic steps for installation are no
different from a commercially-available, mechanical cylinder, however, you must exercise more
care when installing the KESO KEK genie cylinder as it is sensitive to knocks and extreme pressure! Never overtighten the face plate screws.

Participants: KESO solution centre, customer, IT, electrician, joiner, fitter etc. Record the details

Maintenance / Care / Repairs
24.1
Maintenance
To ensure trouble-free operations of cylinders and electronics, we recommend calling in an approved key solution centre. Our solution centres will be pleased to give you details of maintenance contracts. In all other cases, please contact KESO AG who will provide the address of a
qualified partner who will be pleased to contact you to discuss maintenance contract options
and offer you a maintenance contract.
Firmware updates must be installed by the customer. Error free functioning of the product cannot be guaranteed if you fail to update the firmware version. The latest firmware can be
downloaded from www.keso.com.
24.2
Care
Wipe KESO products and accessories with a damp or antistatic cloth. Never use aggressive
cleaning agents or clean with silicon oil. This can cause malfunctions. Cylinder locks must be
treated with such maintenance products as recommended by us - at least as frequently as indicated. Never treat cylinder locks with resinous materials such as oil and graphite. The cleaning
agent must be inserted into the cylinder with the key. Never spray cleaning products directly
into the cylinder lock! Use only cleaning agents without corrosive substances.
24.3
Repairs
Never repair or modify KESO products or accessories. Send defective devices or cables for repair
to KESO AG, or to one of our subsidiaries, using the original packaging.

Static discharge on electronic subassemblies can cause considerable damage to the assembly; it
