gone?
Happy Birthday America! It is hard to believe
another year is half over. It seems like only
yesterday that there was snow, mud, and the
start of calving season. Fast forward to today,
and it is hot and humid. The cows are running
with the bulls and the spring born calves are
half way to weaning. Where has the time
On May 1, 2016, the Society sent out an important membership
survey to give you, the member, the opportunity to tell Council
your opinions regarding the Appendix recordation of mismarked
purebred females. Six weeks later, we have heard back from only
a small percentage of our membership. We need to have more
members respond! With this small of a response, there is no clear
cut direction that is evident. To better the number of responses,
our IT services provider, EDJE, re-sent the survey invitation to
all of our members in an email June 22, 2016. The survey was
also linked directly to our homepage beltie.org. If you have an
email on file with the CLRC, and you do not think you received
the survey, check your spam folder. I have been told by some
members that they found the survey email from EDJE in their
spam folder.
We will extend our deadline to gather your input until August 1,
2016, and then close the comment period. The Long Range Planning Committee and Council will use the information you provide to guide them in their decision. In my opinion, it is the
Council’s job to represent you, the member. It is imperative that
you respond and let us know how you want things done by returning the survey.
I have to make note that we just returned from Rock Springs,
Wisconsin, where the Great Lakes Belted Galloway Association
held their annual meeting and field days. It was great to see many
long-time fellow Belted Galloway enthusiast friends and to have
met so many more. The hosts, Matt and Jill Messmer, made the
weekend memorable and enjoyable for all in attendance. It was
an honor and privilege to have 70 members engage Executive
Director Vic Eggleston, GLBGA President Terry Willis, and me
in an informational panel type discussion after the banquet
Saturday evening. I, for one, took home a lot of information
from that meeting. Enjoy the summer everyone!

Great Lakes Field Days — Rock Springs, Wisconsin
The Great Lakes Belted Galloway
Association held their annual field
days in Rock Springs, Wisconsin at
Matt & Jill Messmer’s Messmerizing Farms. The event drew more
than 70 cattlemen and cattlewomen
with the opportunity to network and
share information.
Karl Burgi, Baraboo, Wisconsin; a
world renowned hoof trimmer,
demonstrated proper hoof trimming
and attendees were able to get up
close and ask questions during his
presentation.
optimize reproductive health and immunity.
Mike Athens, an awardwinning chef, trimmed a
shoulder of Messmer-izing
grass-fed Belted Galloway
beef, discussing how to
cook lean meats. After the
demonstration, he returned
to his kitchen, and prepared
the beef for the evening
meal. Local veterinarians,
Dr. Melissa Haug gave a
detailed presentation on
embryo transfer and Dr.
John Laukant discussed
vaccinating your herd to
Last call to take
our survey!
For decades purebred mismarked females have been
assigned a mismark code and
recorded in the Appendix registry. Also, the Appendix registry has recorded percentage
females who were sired by a
purebred bull.
Will policy change with how
purebred mismarks are recorded and will the upbreeding
program end? It’s up to the
membership and your opinions
are vital!
During May all Belted Galloway breeders with an email
address on file with the CLRC
received the survey. The survey questions were also printed within the June newsletter
to give members who did not
receive an email the opportunity to complete and mail a paper copy.
If you responded to the survey:
Thank You! However, we still
would like to hear from more
of our breeders.
A second opportunity to take
the survey has been emailed to
the membership and the survey
now appears on beltie.org as
another option to respond.
Matt Messmer and Wisconsin natural resource agent, Aaron Pape,
invited guests on a pasture walk
and discussed rotational grazing,
soil and grasses. Guests also enjoyed the beautiful farm gardens.
A local winery, tour, an auction to
benefit the regional juniors, and a
scrumptious dinner of Belted Galloway beef was the end to a perfect day of education, fun and fellowship.

New Breed Literature
A new breed brochure has been created to
promote the Belted Galloway breed. The
pamphlet was designed so that the nutritional
card will tuck conveniently into it. Contact
the office to order Society materials to promote the Belted Galloway breed.
A Message from the CLRC
Jim Washer, CLRC General Manager
Canada Post has indicated that a potential
labor disruption will occur as early as the end
of June and mail service may be affected.
This will specifically affect mailed applications, pedigrees, certificates, DNA requests
and results, payments etc. We encourage all
members and breeders to use other means of
courier, delivery services and electronic services to send materials to CLRC.

will be delays beyond our control. We are
asking all associations to advise their members, including American and other international members, of the potential strike and
