Farmers markets help money take root
in the community, but they also...
h Offer fresh, healthy produce at competitive prices.
h Build community and a sense of place.
h Revitalize downtowns.
h Mean less packaging, less processing, and fewer
food miles (i.e., less than 50 vs. 1500)
h Offer a unique tourism opportunity.
h Reforge the economic link between towns and farms.
h Reinforce local job and business networks.
h Create additional trade for local retail stores.

In 2008, Harrisonburg City Public Schools worked
with Shenandoah Valley farmers to pilot a
Local Food Menu Day that featured foods and
ingredients produced on local family farms. The
meal was served to over 3,400 students and
guests. The menu included chicken, home-made
whole wheat rolls, mashed potatoes, salad, and
fresh strawberries. The menu and meal was very
well received by students, faculty, staff, parents of students, and school board members.
Harrisonburg City Public Schools’ School Nutrition Director, Andrea Early, and the Food
Service personnel are expanding the use of local lettuce and produce on salad bars in the
City’s elementary, middle, and high schools to make local food an everyday occurrence
and feature in cafeterias and the school system. Andrea and her colleagues are currently
working with a local meat processor to source local ground beef for entrees and
ingredients such as tacos and spaghetti sauce. These farm-to-school efforts and initiatives
are important steps in supporting Shenandoah Valley agriculture, reconnecting students to
the farming community, and educating people on where their food comes from.
These schools, colleges, universities, and institutions have made an effort to use local
ingredients from local farms when possible. They also support local food production in
various other ways.

LOOK FOR THE LABEL & TASTE THE DIFFERENCE!
What can
local
government
and
municipalities
do?
Local
governments
can:
h Sponsor a farmers’
market in the town
center and a permanent
structure for year round
market sales.
h Encourage schools,
hospitals, and senior
centers to regularly
purchase local food to
include in served meals.
h Create opportunities
and incentives for food
processing businesses
in the community.
h Subsidize CSA
shares for low-income
residents.
h Partner with other
governmental agencies
to promote healthy
eating.
h Start a local food
policy council.
Contact your local
representatives and
tell them you support
a local/regional
community-based
food system.
“When local agriculture
and food production
are integrated into the
community, food and
agriculture becomes part of
the community’s fabric and
problem-solving capacity
rather than just a commodity
that is bought and sold
with little connection to
the community.”
