Genetic Defects
The American Angus Association has identified different genetic
defects in the Angus breed. We are fortunate that we have
very few of the affected pedigrees. However, when there is
a possibility, all animals involved have been tested free of all
known genetic defects.
Retained Interest
Van Dyke Angus Reserves the Right to 1/3 semen interest in all
sale bulls. The 1/3 semen interest is a semen revenue sharing
interest only, with 100% of the bull’s salvage value belonging to
the buyer.
Terms & Conditions
All cattle sell under the standard terms & conditions as adopted
by the American Angus Association.
Settlement & Delivery
All bulls are to be settled for sale day unless prior arrangements
have been made. In regards to the bulls selling, Van Dyke Angus
is offering to feed, maintain and fertility test for an approximate
March 15 delivery. Free delivery is available in Montana and
surrounding states.
All bulls are fully guaranteed for one full breeding season.
Food & Refreshments
Will be available throughout the duration of the sale. There will
be a complimentary lunch beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Our efforts to continue to provide you, our customers, with the greatest money-making genetics
possible through maternal influence, has brought you one of the finest selections of bulls ever
produced at Van Dyke Angus Ranch!
As we have discussed in the past, fertility and maternal excellence are the greatest factors in
profit-potential for the commercial cattleman. And we continue to be committed to provide cattle
that will not only be capable of functioning efficiently, but will also genetically add more live
calves...as well as bigger calves, and more fertile replacements…to your operation.
One of our biggest concerns with the function of Angus cattle has been structural soundness
and quality foot structure. It is our belief that this is a result of both genetics and nutritional
development. This year we have taken an aggressive approach towards the nutritional component
of this equation. We have decided to develop our goals at a slower rate of growth and on a
higher forage ration than in years’ past. The results have been exceptional and we are even more
confident than ever in the final product that we are offering on Thursday, February 25th!
We are proud to be providing you with 150 bulls that have been produced by a cowherd that
has been required to calve in a 42-day calving season for nearly two decades….a cowherd that is
phenotypically scrutinized for soundness, attractiveness, and production.

herd sires! He is a slam dunk calving ease sire whose calves are
little at birth and grow from the time they hit the ground. Out of
one of the finest “409” daughters in the Van Dyke program, his first
daughters are now calving and appear to be very good milkers and
have great dispositions! “707” is exceptionally attractive and athletic

Selected by Dietz Family Angus of North Dakota on our 2013 Bull
Sale to carry on the breeding of DFA Hero 6017. He is moderateframed with very good muscle and fantastic feet and legs. His dam
was one of the elite cows on our farm with production records
on 11 calves of 102 at birth, 106 at weaning and 107 at yearling,
while maintaining a perfect 365 day calving interval. Four Corners’ oldest sister is 13-years-old, is a Pathfinder dam as well and
has recently entered our embryo transplant program. Semen is

Koupal Juneau 797 was our choice to add an outcross growthsire to the VDAR program and we have been very happy with
the results. The calves are heavy -structured and thick-made,
set down on a big rugged foot that is symmetrical in its makeup.
The 797’s combine this with being deep-bodied and widestructured and gain and convert as you expect them to. The
daughters that we have seen are moderate-framed cattle that are
easy fleshing and very fertile and according to Lavern, they are

While on a trip to Nebraska we discovered Walk On in the Mike
Sitz herd of Burwell. He was as impressive of an individual as
you could hope to see. His pedigree is so strong in maternal
genetics that we felt it was a no loss situation. The females from

progeny in the sale the Walk On genetics will continue to make a

It sounds so simple? But did you know that of all the commonly used breeds in the beef industry in America today, there are only
three registered breeds of cattle that are pure! All other registered breeds of cattle aside from Angus, Hereford and Charolais are
composites to some degree. Is this what is best for the commercial cattle producer?
I was personally blessed to be trained (or “brain-washed”) by Frank Fox, a professor of Animal Science at Cal Poly State
University in San Luis Obispo. We lost Frank last year but his legacy and philosophy of breeding purebred cattle lives on in a
multitude of seed-stock producers around the country! “It is blatantly simple,” according to Fox, “as a seed-stock producer, our job
is to raise purebred bulls for our customer, the commercial cattleman, so he can in turn use them on his crossbred cow to generate
the maximum in hybrid vigor!” Fox was also a proponent of line breeding cattle to further increase consistency and predictability
and increase the level of hybrid vigor one more notch for the commercial cowman. I will be the first to admit that Frank was a
“purist”, (pun intended) and I will never forget him saying, “All these crossbred bulls out there, or as some would like to call them,
composites, are taking the greatest punch of hybrid vigor away from the customer!”
Recently there has been some discussion by some in the Angus breed that we should consider the registration of composites! At
Van Dyke Angus Ranch, we believe that is completely the wrong approach, whether from the standpoint of the association or the
Angus breeder. As Clarence Van Dyke so eloquently put it, “What do you have if you start registering crossbreds? I’ll tell you what
you have, you have nothing!” He continued that the value of what we have is the fact that we are the largest and most advanced
“purebred” breed of cattle in the world! As a matter of fact, as other breeds have tried to figure out how to compete with us, they
have had to use Angus cattle as their base to their breed!
I can appreciate at the association level where their concern is…that there is a lot of income they are missing out on by allowing
other breeds to register all these angus based crossbreds. Also, I can understand a breeder’s thought of providing some variety to
his customer who may be going somewhere else to buy a different type or kind of bull to meet a specific need. But, to me, this is
short-sighted and undermines what really makes the Angus breed VALUABLE; we have a deep foundation and that is what all other
breeds want!
We have all the genetic diversity we need right now in the Angus breed. In the past two decades, breeders have pushed to make
every bull be 2.0 or lower for a birth EPD, and well over 100 for yearling and now after multiple recalculations… over 200 for $Beef?
And we wonder why bull buyers are seeking different alternatives to find cattle that they want to buy! What happened to the bulls
that will provide the stout bone, muscle and shape that people are looking for? They are still out there…we just have to have the
guts to use them! Unfortunately, most of them have been eliminated because we have made people think they need a bull with
no more than a 2.0 BEPD! The ironic thing about these cattle, that bull buyers have been trained to avoid like the plague because
of that BEPD number, is that when they go buy some crossbred that they like for its bone, muscle and shape, they are buying a
crossbred with no predictability that will most likely be more problematic than any 10 birth EPD we would sell in the Angus breed.
What is truly great about our position as a “pure” breed of cattle? It’s that we can breed our herds the way we want to and
yet keep the dual-advantage of being highly predictable for the cowman wanting to improve his straight Angus cows as well as
providing our customers with the ultimate in hybrid vigor for their cross-bred cowherd! After all, as Frank Fox would say, “Our
mission as breeders is to allow the commercial cowman to get the most out of our genetics, not us!”
