The gala will benefit the American
Cancer Society and proceeds from
the event will go to medical research
and community programs to support
cancer patients and their family. This
event is the largest, one day event
held in Central Texas and is crucial
for funding all of the local district’s
community services.
Dwight Yoakam: music legend and
movie star. Just his name conjures
up provocative images of poured on
blue jeans and a pale cowboy hat
pulled low, belting out intricate,
catchy melodies paired with poignant,
brilliant lyrics that mesmerize you
with their indelible imprint.
Yoakam’s twangy, genre-warping
country tunes laced with a strong
dose of rock-and-roll influence have
earned him a reputation as a genius,
as well as two Grammy’s and 21
Grammy nominations, according to
the singing star’s website. They’ve
also carried him a long way from his
roots in rural Pikeville, Kentucky
to his current status as Bakersville,
California’s most famous resident.
Inspired by the Beatles, the Byrds,
Elvis and other honky- tonk music
of the area. Dwight moved to Los
Angeles in 1978 after years of
rejection in Nashville. He realized
he might need to find an alternate
highway for his music, so he brought
his music to an unlikely audience- to
the roots of rock fans.
Yoakam teamed with producer
Pete Anderson for the 1984 EP
Guitars,Cadillacs, followed up in
1986 with Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc.
and went on to produce more than
a dozen records of
largely original music,
including Hillbilly
Deluxe, Blame the
Vain, This Time
and Population: Me,
voted top 100 album of
the decade by Country
Universe. In recent years
he has given his own
take on Buck Owens with
Dwight Sings Buck and
My Very Best.
Popular tunes include I sang Dixie,
It Only Hurts When I Cry, Little Ways,
A Thousand Miles from Nowhere, and
Turn it on, Turn It Up, Turn me Loose
and Little Sister. He’s had 12 gold
albums and nine albums go platinum
or multi-platinum with This Time
going triple platinum. Yoakam has
sold more than 25 million albums
around the globe.
In February 2008,
Dwight Yoakam was
inducted into the
Kentucky Music Hall
of Fame. It was an amazing ceremony
that touched him personally, “It really
is all about my family; Kentucky
is that and always will be that. It’s
an honor that really is one of my
proudest because of how emotionally
connected to me it will always be.”
The music still matters to Dwight.
Yoakam, who during his long career
has updated the traditional honkytonk style of country without ever
going pop, is prepping for his first
album of original music in five years.
Giving shape to a collection of music
is just as important to him now, as
it was when he made his critically
acclaimed debut in 1986. “ Albums
are still albums- I take exception to
folks saying they don’t make albums
anymore,” says Yoakam in January
2010. “ A record literally means a
record of music. We’re still making
records and still making albums, if the
individual artist working still merits
it. If you’re doing a bunch of filler...
people didn’t want that when we were
buying vinyl albums” much less now.
Those helping the American Cancer
Society and Cattle Baron’s with their
ticket purchases should keep in mind
they’re seeing even more than a great
musician. Yoakam has also made
the jump from vinyl and CDs to the
silver screen, making his mark in
major motion pictures acting with
film names such as Tommy Lee Jones,
Forest Whitaker, Nicolas Cage, Reese
Witherspoon, and Vince Vaughn.
Yoakam’s film appearances include
roles in Sling Blade, Red Rock West,
Panic Room, and Crank. Most recently
he was in Four Christmases and
wrapping up the filming of Dirty Girls
with Tim McGraw.

our location and changing our date.
We are proud to be back at the Extraco
Events Center, home of the Coliseum,
while bringing more focus than ever
to our great event that supports a
wonderful mission; Cancer. This is
a disease that has impacted most
everyone’s lives. It could have been you,
your family or even friends. However
it could have been, the mission is
simple: eliminating cancer as a major
health problem by prevention, research,
education, advocacy and service.
Your generous support is what drives
this mission to the major successes
the organization has achieved. Your
American Cancer Society is solely funded
through public donations. So what the
organization has accomplished, is what
you have accomplished!
We hope you join us for two new,
special pre-events: The Wild Black Jack

music and Hill Country fun. Then there
is the new 5k Run with the Bulls at the
Highlander Ranch.
Don’t forget to include the kids at the
Junior Cattle Baron’s Ball, same day,
same place as the 5k. This kid’s party
honors our youngest cancer patients
and survivors.
We look forward to seeing you on
July 23, 2011 as we come together to
celebrate Courage!

Cattle Baron’s 2011 brings A Tribute to Courage: Courage to
fight, Courage to change, Courage to come together for more
research and more cures. As we write our letter to you, it is with
the heaviest of hearts that we announce our Honorary Chairman,
Mario Alvarado, has lost his battle to end stage cancer. He has
allowed us to tell his story in the hopes of helping us raise as
much money as we can to go towards research.
Mario had been managing a rare form of cancer for the last five
years. It all started with what seemed as an appendicitis attack
in April 2005. During surgery, there was a tumor found that was
diagnosed as appendical cancer. He was never able to have any
tumors removed because of the form of cancer he had. In doing
so, the cancer would have instantly spread throughout his body.
Because of the valuable research, with the help of the American
Cancer Society, Mario celebrated Five More Birthdays with his
family and friends.
While Mario is no longer with us, his valiant fight will always
be remembered. He taught everyone who he had known how to
make each day count and live life to the fullest. He was a leader
in life, a respected football coach, as well as businessman. His
outlook always remained positive and he rarely complained when
he had every right to. Cattle Baron’s 2011 will be Mario
Alvarado’s final farewell;
a Tribute to His Courage.

Ray Rushton Johnston, Jr. lives a life that inspires others.
Born on Feb 10, 1979 in
Montgomery, AL he grew up dreaming
of a career in the NBA. It was through
hard work and determination that he
was able to realize that dream.
Taught the values of perseverance
and working hard from his parents,
Martha and Ray Sr., Johnston started
on his path to the pros by shooting free
throws in his driveway at the age of
four. By the eighth grade he made the
high school varsity team where smaller
colleges were interested in his talent,
but Johnston only wanted to play in the
Southeastern Conference. He held out
and ended up becoming a walk on player
to the University of Alabama team his
freshman year. It was during his college
years that he became more involved in
music. After a family member told him
that he could not take drums to college,
he learned to play the guitar by ear and
eventually started playing in both an
acoustic rock/country trio and a Motown
party band that played local Tuscaloosa
venues and events.
In 2001, Ray graduated with a
degree in Marketing and moved to
Dallas, Texas. While there he continued
to pursue his passion for music and
performed regularly at area restaurants
and bars. A few years later, at the age
of 24, while working as a loan officer
Johnston was “discovered” by the
Mavericks while playing basketball in
the 2004 Hoop-it-Up Tournament. A
scout for the Mavericks saw him play
and offered him a shot at his dream – to
play in the NBA. Johnston’s ensuing
tryout won him a spot on the Mavericks’
summer league team, making him
teammates with the likes of Josh Howard
and Devin Harris.
Ray’s chance to live that dream
changed when a small injury on his
shin from a pickup game led to surgery
that would later put him in a coma. It
was at this surgery that his leukemia
was discovered - a rare form known as
acute promyelocytic leukemia. During
his battle with the deadly disease,
Johnston would endure incredible
medical challenges: a collapsed lung; an
irregular heartbeat; kidney failure; blood
clots in his brain that led to seizures and
finally having to be shocked back to life
– twice.
After successfully overcoming all
of those hurdles and beating leukemia,
not once but four times, he is now
pursuing another passion – playing
music. The Ray Johnston Band recorded
their first album at Palmyra Studios in
Palmer, TX in August 2009 and they
are currently touring in various cities
in the Southeastern and Southwestern
United States. The band is comprised of
Grammy award winning talent: Keith
Anderson (saxophone) has recorded with
Kayne West and has toured and played
with Herbie Hancock, Roy Hargrove,
Marcus Miller, and Kirk Franklin. Bobby
Sparks (keyboard and B3 organ) has
played with Kirk Franklin, Tower of
Power, Eryka Badu and countless others.
Giving back to the community and
supporting personal causes has always
been important to Ray. In September
2005, he co-founded the Heroes
Basketball Program, where he coaches
spring and summer basketball to Dallas
area youth. A testament to the success
of the program, all of the players of
the “class of 2010” Heroes team will
sign scholarships and play in college.
Another cause close to his heart is the
fight to find a cure for leukemia. Ray’s
relationship with The Ryan Gibson
Foundation (www.trgf.org), a Dallas
based non-profit dedicated to finding a
cure for leukemia, has prompted him
to create fundraisers at many of the
upcoming Ray Johnston Band shows on
the tour.
Johnston attends Watermark
Community Church in Dallas and his
lyrics reflect his email signature…God
First.

Dwight Yoakam: music legend and
movie star. Just his name conjures
up provocative images of poured on
blue jeans and a pale cowboy hat
pulled low, belting out intricate,
catchy melodies paired with poignant,
brilliant lyrics that mesmerize you
with their indelible imprint.
Yoakam’s twangy, genre-warping
country tunes laced with a strong
dose of rock-and-roll influence have
earned him a reputation as a genius,
as well as two Grammy’s and 21
Grammy nominations, according to
the singing star’s website. They’ve
also carried him a long way from his
roots in rural Pikeville, Kentucky
to his current status as Bakersville,
California’s most famous resident.
Inspired by the Beatles, the Byrds,
Elvis and other honky- tonk music
of the area. Dwight moved to Los
Angeles in 1978 after years of
rejection in Nashville. He realized
he might need to find an alternate
highway for his music, so he brought
his music to an unlikely audience- to
the roots of rock fans.
Yoakam teamed with producer
Pete Anderson for the 1984 EP
Guitars,Cadillacs, followed up in
1986 with Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc.
and went on to produce more than
a dozen records of
largely original music,
including Hillbilly
Deluxe, Blame the
Vain, This Time
and Population: Me,
voted top 100 album of
the decade by Country
Universe. In recent years
he has given his own
take on Buck Owens with
Dwight Sings Buck and
My Very Best.
Popular tunes include I sang Dixie,
It Only Hurts When I Cry, Little Ways,
A Thousand Miles from Nowhere, and
Turn it on, Turn It Up, Turn me Loose
and Little Sister. He’s had 12 gold
albums and nine albums go platinum
or multi-platinum with This Time
going triple platinum. Yoakam has
sold more than 25 million albums
around the globe.
In February 2008,
Dwight Yoakam was
inducted into the
Kentucky Music Hall
of Fame. It was an amazing ceremony
that touched him personally, “It really
is all about my family; Kentucky
is that and always will be that. It’s
an honor that really is one of my
proudest because of how emotionally
connected to me it will always be.”
The music still matters to Dwight.
Yoakam, who during his long career
has updated the traditional honkytonk style of country without ever
going pop, is prepping for his first
album of original music in five years.
Giving shape to a collection of music
is just as important to him now, as
it was when he made his critically
acclaimed debut in 1986. “ Albums
are still albums- I take exception to
folks saying they don’t make albums
anymore,” says Yoakam in January
2010. “ A record literally means a
record of music. We’re still making
records and still making albums, if the
individual artist working still merits
it. If you’re doing a bunch of filler...
people didn’t want that when we were
buying vinyl albums” much less now.
Those helping the American Cancer
Society and Cattle Baron’s with their
ticket purchases should keep in mind
they’re seeing even more than a great
musician. Yoakam has also made
the jump from vinyl and CDs to the
silver screen, making his mark in
major motion pictures acting with
film names such as Tommy Lee Jones,
Forest Whitaker, Nicolas Cage, Reese
Witherspoon, and Vince Vaughn.
Yoakam’s film appearances include
roles in Sling Blade, Red Rock West,
Panic Room, and Crank. Most recently
he was in Four Christmases and
wrapping up the filming of Dirty Girls
with Tim McGraw.
