SMITH Ithaca, N e w York INDEX © Copyright 1997 by Julian C. Smith NOTES ON THE INDEX This index is an alphabetized list of obituaries and death notices w h i c h appeared in the principal n e w s p a p e r of Ithaca, N e w York, during the years 1 8 7 5 a n d 1876. During this period the newspaper w a s a daily publication four pages long. T h e index w a s compiled from microfilms in Olin Library, Cornell University, of the daily issues from J a n u a r y 1, 1 8 7 5 through D e c e m b e r 1876. The name of the deceased person is followed by the age at death and the date of death, w h e n available; the date of the death notice; a n d s o m e explanatory notes. T h e last n a m e of the deceased is followed b y the given n a m e s a n d often b y a title s u c h as Mrs., Miss, Hon., Prof., Dr., Rev., etc. For s o m e entries only the last n a m e is available. Death notices usually appeared on page 4. Occasionally, however, they are found o n page 1 or o n page 3; w h e n this is the case it is indicated in the notes. The surname of the deceased was sometimes spelled in different ways in successive entries or even in the s a m e entry. W h e n it w a s impossible to b e sure w h i c h spelling w a s correct, both spellings have b e e n listed, the m o r e dubious o n e in parentheses. About 40 per cent of the entries came from the official death notices. T h e remainder c a m e from n e w s items, especially from neighboring towns, or from legal notices a n d reports of surrogate's court proceedings. The term "legal notice" in the notes indicates a notice to creditors of the deceased to file their claims against the estate. S u c h a notice gives the n a m e a n d place of residence of the deceased, b u t little other information except the n a m e s of the executors or administrators. Surrogate court proceedings (listed as "Surrog. Ct. proc") record actions relating to the sale of property a n d estate distribution. T h e y often list the heirs a n d s o m e t i m e s their relationship to the deceased. Following the main index is an alphabetical list of cross-references showing the n a m e s of relatives of the deceased, m o s t c o m m o n l y the father or parents of a married w o m a n . Finally there is an analysis of the ages at death. Of the 955 names in the m a i n list (568 m e n , 3 7 5 w o m e n , 12 children for w h o m the gender w a s not given), ages w e r e given for 6 2 2 (363 m e n , 2 5 9 w o m e n ) . T h e analysis s h o w s the n u m b e r of deaths at each age. There w e r e three centenarians, two w o m e n a n d o n e m a n . T h e m a n , Dalle Vallemain, a F r e n c h m a n , w a s said to have died at age 112. T h e average a n d m e d i a n ages at death of those for w h o m the age is given are listed below. Included for comparison are the averages a n d m e d i a n s from the Ithaca Journal for the year 1996. 1875-1876 1996 Women Men Overall Women Men Overall Average 46.1 50.5 48.7 75.5 69.2 72.5 Median 50 56 52 79 75 77 While efforts have b e e n m a d e to m a k e this index as accurate as possible, the author cannot guarantee it is error-free.
