2009 OUTLOOK
The Brevard College baseball team begins a new chapter in 2009, as the Tornados play
their first season as full members of NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference.
Anticipation is high as the Tornados take flight in one of the nation’s premier conferences
for Division II baseball. Coach Todd Anderson’s club is looking to rebound after a season’s
worth of struggles in 2008.
In their season as provisional Division II and SAC members, the Tornados compiled
a 10-38 record, including a 3-18 mark against teams from the SAC. Brevard opened the
season 4-2 but followed the first half dozen games with seven straight losses and closed the
year by losing 21 of their last 22 contests. Bright spots on the season included three wins
over North Greenville, a pair of wins over Anderson and victories over SAC rivals Wingate,
Catawba and Newberry.
STARTING PITCHERS
Without a doubt the strength of the 2009 squad
heading into the season is the pitching staff. The starting rotation
is highlighted by ace left-hander Shane Galloway (Rosman, N.C.).
Galloway toed the rubber 12 times in 2008 and completed five
of the ten games he started. The southpaw posted a 4-7 record
with a 3.50 ERA, fifth best among SAC pitchers. Included in
Galloway’s victories was a 3-1 win over SAC Champion Catawba
on March 9.
Likely joining Galloway in the weekend rotation are
Ryan Toney (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Seth Laughter (Fletcher,
N.C.). The hardest thrower on the team, Toney led the team in
appearances last season, with 14, and went 2-6 with a 4.67 ERA.
LAUGHTER Laughter, a four-year starter, is the most complete pitcher on the
team, with four pitches he can throw for strikes. The senior struggled last season though,
going 0-6 in ten starts.
Senior Spencer Linn (Fletcher, N.C.), who has started 21 games in his first three seasons,
and freshman Matthew Pruitt (Hendersonville, N.C.), a transfer from Western Carolina,
will likely start weekday games and could break into the weekend rotation with solid
performances on the mound.
RELIEF PITCHERS
Coach Anderson has a deep group of relievers to turn to in 2009. Jacob White (Elkin,
N.C.), who saw extensive action out of the bullpen in 2008, returns to anchor the Tornados’
relief efforts.White, who may also see emergency starter duty for Brevard, has worked hard
in the offseason to establish a third pitch. Juco transfer Tommy Yearty (Satellite Beach, Fla.)
will also be called upon regularly in long relief situations.
Battling back from an injury to his non-throwing arm in the fall, Luke Smithson (Mills
River, N.C.) will factor into the bullpen mix after appearing 11 times in 2008. Lefty specialst
Payne Parker (Florence, S.C.) will also see plenty of action for BC.

Junior Josh Miller (Hendersonville, N.C.) is back for a third season as Brevard’s primary
back stop. Miller, who totaled 18 extra-base hits as a freshman in 2007, will be expected
to hit in the middle of the Tornado lineup, providing much-needed power. Sharing the load
with Miller will be juco transfer Jason Merrill (Hendersonville, N.C.). Merrill is the best
defensive catcher on the sqaud and posseses the arm strength to keep opposing runners at
bay. Freshman Nathan Young (Statesville, N.C.) adds depth to the position.
FIRST BASEMEN
First base is one of the biggest position battles heading into the spring.Western Carolina
transfer Jackie Corn (Hendersonville, N.C.), Stephen Mullis (Charlotte, N.C.), who led the
team in hitting last season with a .321 average, and Michael Calhoun (Florence, S.C.) could
all see time at the position and could all bat in the middle of the BC lineup.
SECOND BASEMEN
When he’s not pitching, Pruitt will see the lion’s share of time
at second. A rare middle infielder who can hit for power, the
Western Carolina transfer will be looked upon to drive in runs in
the Brevard lineup. When Pruitt is on the mound, Coker transfer
Bryant Smith (Florence, S.C.) will see time at the position.
SHORTSTOPS
Team captain Linn, the best defensive infielder on the squad,
is back for his fourth year as a starter and second at shortstop.
Also a good situational hitter, Linn can hit in several spots in the
batting order. When Linn is pitching, freshman Ben Pacey (Swain
County, N.C.), whose strong preseason was a pleasant surprise,
should play the position.
THIRD BASEMEN
WARNER
Newcomer Will Scholer (Norwalk, Iowa), the team’s best power threat, will get the
most playing time at the hot corner and should bat either third or fourth in the batting
order. Mullis could also see time at third base, and Vance Crook (West Union, S.C.), a
tireless worker who sports good gap power, rounds out a position that might be Brevard’s
strongest offensively.
OUTFIELDERS
Coach Anderson expects big things right away from freshman Kellen Moman (Greenville,
S.C.), who will begin the season as the starter in left field. Already a seasoned hitter, Moman
should also provide solid defense in his rookie campaign.
A familiar face, four-year starter Brice Warner (Clover, S.C.), is the team’s top
centerfielder. Warner, who posseses the best speed on the team and stole seven bases a
year ago, is expected to lead off in the batting order.
Right field will be manned by Adam Arrowwood (Asheville, N.C.). A team leader and
versatile hitter, Arrowood’s arm strength is a great asset to the Tornado defense.
Outfield depth should come from M.A. Dozier (Cumming, Ga.) and Deavin Wilson
(Bessemer City, N.C.), two players who improved greatly in the preseason period.

OUTLOOK
Todd Anderson is entering his fourth season as head coach of the Brevard College baseball program
and his tenth season overall at Brevard. Anderson is excited at the oppotunity to lead his Tornados into
one of the toughest conferences in all of NCAA Division II baseball.
In their first season as provisional members of the South Atlantic Conference, the Tornados competed
against a very tough schedule, taking on five nationally-ranked opponents as well as a full South Atlantic
Conference slate.
Along with the challenging schedule, the Tornados battled through a handful of season-ending injuries
to a number of key players to post a 10-38 record, with six of those victories coming at the friendly
confines of Gil Coan Field in Brevard. Highlights of the 2008 season include a come-from-behind win over Lander on February 9, where the
Tornados scored 13 runs in one inning to come away with the 16-10 win. On February 16, the Tornados opened up their SAC season with
a 9-4 road victory over Wingate University. BC then went on to defeat No. 24 Catawba in the second game of a double-header, 3-1, after
playing a four-hour, 12-inning affair in game one.
In his second year as Brevard’s Head Coach, Anderson helped lead BC to a 27-23 overall record in their first season as provisional Division
II members. The highlights from the 2007 season campaign were many as the Tornados had victories over a number of NCAA Division II
schools. A series victory over Presbyterian College on February 10-11, who is now an NCAA Division I member, saw the Tornados defeat
the Blue Hose in both games of the Saturday doubleheader (6-4, 7-1). Brevard turned right back around and knocked off No. 14 USC-Aiken
on February 20th by the score of 7-5. Against future SAC foes, the Tornados posted wins over Lincoln Memorial, Mars Hill, and Lenoir-Rhyne.
In 2003, Coach Anderson was honored with the AFLAC Assistant Coach of the Year Award. He began his coaching career nine years ago as
an assistant coach here at Brevard College. Following the conclusion of the 2005 season, Coach Anderson took over the program after six
seasons as the Head Assistant Coach. In his first three seasons at the helm of the Tornado baseball program, Anderson’s teams have knocked
off six top-30 teams in the NCAA Division II poll and have averaged 21 wins per year, all while transitioning from NAIA to NCAA Division II.
Coach Anderson is a graduate of East Tennessee State University, where he was drafted in 1995 by the Cleveland Indians. He also went on to
play Independent Baseball in the Frontier League for the Ohio Valley Redcoats and the Dubois County Dragons.
Coach Anderson is married to his wife Alicia, a native of Brevard, and they are the proud parents of sons Riley and Brady.
