Form follows Function. Even in Germany, one of the European centres for mechanical engineering, little attention is given to the topic of product design. Despite our own, promising history with Weimarer Bauhaus, the form of components is ordinarily given very little importance in this area. With the development of our dry-break coupling series in the 204, 206 and 209 ranges, we have set standards in this area too – and it has paid off. With the highly functional and ergonomic design of couplings ranges 204, 206 and 209, we managed to convince the jury this year and pick up one of these coveted awards. The famous Sullivan architectural principle that “form follows function” applies entirely and absolutely to this new development. Centre stage in our work has been taken not by the aesthetics, but rather – as in all our products – by the consistent development and optimisation of the technology. The gratifying result demonstrates that this premise has also produced an efficient and attractive design. Should you wish to experience our “winner” first hand, there will be plenty of opportunity for you to do so from 16th to 20th April. In this period, the RECTUS Group will be present at the Hannover Messe – with many product highlights. What exactly awaits you there is shown in this issue. Precisely one week later, from 23rd to 29th April, we will be on the move again and presenting everything that we have to offer in the field of mobile hydraulics, at BAUMA in Munich. More on this too on page 6 of this magazine. On a note that is equally as positive as the award we received at start of this year, we were able to finish last year with a very gratifying business result. In this thoroughly positive vein, we would finally like to wish you a successful year, a great deal of pleasure reading the new RECTUS Live and perhaps you will visit us some time at one of the trade fairs. 3 4 The RECTUS Group Customer Magazine The RECTUS Group Customer Magazine 5 2007 Hannover Messe: Eightfold Performance. Dry-break Coupling Systems 3. Safety Couplings: 5. Fluid Handling: 7. The Extreme: Couplings with no measurable leakage are always the right choice where critical media have to be connected under sensitive environmental conditions. In many ways, many of our products meet increased safety requirements. As such, colour/mechanical system coding makes it impossible to mix up the media and self-venting couplings reliably prevent the whiplash effect. Wherever the safe transport of liquids is concerned, our special resistant stainless steel and brass coupling systems are the best option to use. The development of high performance systems – which work reliably for example in the pressure range of up to 800 bar or at temperatures of up to 300°C – was initially facilitated by decades of know-how. 2. TEMA Multi-Line: 6. Low Force: 8. Thermoplastic Couplings: Easily and safely connect and disconnect up to four hydraulic connections under pressure, in one go. That is what we call a sensible increase in efficiency. Efficient single-handed operations of coupling systems, particularly at installation points that are difficult to access, firstly demands easy connecting and disconnecting. Our low-force systems make the work child’s play. The exclusive processing of high performance industrial plastics for coupling bodies and seals makes these systems the right solution even in surroundings with special requirements. 4. Best Practice: Individual coupling solutions also make working on test stands quicker and easier. The Requirements of our Customers Form our Specifications. When, on 23rd to 29th April, everyone who is anyone in the construction sector meets in Munich – now for the 28th time – the RECTUS Group will, of course, again be among the party. Amid excavators, cranes and countless visitors, we will again be in the best company with our innovative solutions for mobile hydraulics. Ever quicker and more complex processes and increasingly aggressive or high purity media are the characteristics of the new challenges in the chemical industry. Frank Engleder, RECTUS Group Product Manager explains the requirements from the point of view of the manufacturer. This year in Munich, our highlights will include presenting you with several innovations and developments of our TEMA product range for hydraulic applications. Firstly, we will be demonstrating to you how, with our new TEMA Multi-Line multi-coupling range, you can save real time and money when changing ancillary equipment. Also on our booth, you can see our high performance TEMA TFF range couplings, which will be showing what they have to offer in the pressure range of up to 800 bar. Moreover, at BAUMA we will of course also be showing our pressure eliminator, which facilitates easy connecting and disconnecting even under dynamic and residual pressure. One option for connecting manually even with large diameters and high dynamic pressures is to use our quick connector, which provides the required force by means of leverage. Our couplings experts will be available for detailed questions or specialist technical information of the trade fair. We look forward to your visit in hall A5, on booth 406. As such, our new developments are actually a very good reflection of what the customers want. The minimisation of leakages, high resistance to corrosion, efficient handling, safety in the prevention of mix-ups, increased sealing properties, the minimisation of pressure drop and easier cleaning are the most common requirements. high purity zones are assembled under class 10,000 clean room conditions. RECTUS Live: “Minimising leakages” is right at the top of the customer wish list. What are coupling systems currently able to achieve with respect to sealing? Frank Engleder: A lot! As an example, we would pin point our dry-break RECTUS 200 range. These coupling systems are fitted with valves on the coupling and plug, which form almost no volume of dead-space. As such, when disconnecting, no drops of the media being carried will escape, but rather an almost imperceptible film is formed on the end of the valve. RECTUS Live: What do you consider to be the greatest challenges of the future? Frank Engleder: The more complex the media and the higher the quality of the production specifications, the more specialised the couplings will be that our customers require from us. As, for example, more and more media are being used in high temperature ranges, this will drive the development of thermo-couplings. And environmental conservation conditions will play an increasing part. As such, one thing is clear: the requirements of the coupling systems will continue to increase, or in other words: innovative processing technology is not possible without innovative couplings. 8 9 The RECTUS Group Customer Magazine Peter W. KG RECTUS 20KB Series 10 The RECTUS Group Customer Magazine The RECTUS Group Customer Magazine Constant water cooling in the DVB-T booster with the TEMA FlatFace range: Bespoke solution for biotechnology: So You Can Always Keep a Cool Head When Watching Television. To Climate in the Bioreactor. Since the end of 2005, over 49 million Germans are able to receive digital television through their aerials. By the end of 2008, at least 90 percent should be supplied with the so-called DVB-T “terrestrial” television. One of the leading manufacturers of DVB-T boosters for TV companies and transmission stations is Spanish Broad Telecom S.A., which relies on dry-break coupling systems from the RECTUS / TEMA FlatFace range for the water cooling of the highly sensitive electrical components in these boosters. In Europe, new, digital aerial television (DVB-T) is gradually replacing the analogue PAL television that was available previously. As part of this, both the transmission institutions and the television viewers must have the necessary equipment. Spanish company Broad Telecom S.A. – established in the European telecommunications market for over 25 years – supplies transmission institutions and TV production companies with the necessary technology – including DVB-T boosters, which are required for transmission of the signals. As the electrical components of this new generation of boosters are becoming ever smaller with ever higher performance, the “old-fashioned” air cooling unit is no longer sufficient: what is required is a constant and effective cooling system with small dimensions. of the signals from its DVB-T booster, Broad Telecom depends on the completely dry-break couplings from the TIF range. The 3/8” dry-break designs in brass regulate the cooling water circuit flow from the booster insert element and thereby provide the necessary cooling to the highly sensitive electronic components. This coupling version from the dry-break range also allows rapid and primarily drybreak connection and disconnection of the plug-in module into the transmitter subrack. The so-called push-pull locking mechanism enables easy insertion and removal of the assemblies with integrated plugs, without operating the sleeve. A further advantage of the TEMA TIF systems is the optimised valve structure, which means that the coupling always demonstrates minimal pressure drop, of which the result is the achievement of maximum effectiveness and productivity. Bioreactors are extremely “sensitive”. They require continuous processes and therefore constant external conditions, in order to cultivate cells or micro-organisms in a culture medium. In the bioreactors of Dutch biotechnology company Applikon Biotechnology B.V., RECTUS couplings not only ensure that the correct quantity of water is always circulating in the reactor but rather that it can also be easily and safely disconnected from the function circuit for sterilisation. The water circulating in the reactor is of very particular significance to the function of a bioreactor: by cooling or heating the water, it is possible to control the temperature and thereby ensure constant conditions inside the reactor. The coupling systems used have double shut-off valves, which automatically open the line when the plug clicks into the coupling body. To disconnect, the sleeve is simply pushed back – the valves lock and interrupt the circuit. When handling dangerous media, dry-break couplings are also used to prevent unwanted air pockets Bioreactors – also known as fermenters – and even the build-up of small drops of are containers in which cells or micro- the residual medium. organisms are cultivated in a culture medium under the best possible conditions, The colour coding of the coupling and plug in order to gain either the cells themselves, guarantees an additional safety aspect: the parts of them, or one of their metabolic pro- visual coding (same colour sleeve on the ducts. Quick connect couplings are used for bioreactors in order to facilitate the safe and easy separation of the water supply. When in use, the reactor is regularly disconnected from the circuit for the purposes of sterilisation in the autoclave. In order to guarantee a controlled water supply, Applikon Biotechnology relies on the double shut-off thermoplastic couplings of the RECTUS 21 range (Delrin/POM), which demonstrate excellent properties in both the temperature and mechanical resistance of the material. The use of our products at Broad Telecom demonstrates that quick connect couplings represent important connecting elements not only in pneumatics but also in other sensitive areas of industry, such as In order to guarantee uninterrupted opera- chemistry, laboratory technology or teletion and thus the continuous transmission communications. Dry-break Series 200 Awarded Coveted Product Design Prize Coupling Standards for the Development of Quick Change Systems The history of our 204, 206 and 209 RECTUS ranges is a true success story. After their launch last year at ACHEMA in Frankfurt, the extremely dry-break coupling system caused uproar in the market. As an outstanding solution in the applications like cooling circuits and chemical processing lines in the low pressure range, the new KL range secured a permanent place in the market within a very short time. With the red dot award for outstanding product design, the coupling also demonstrates that the interaction of the greatest possible functionality, efficiency and perfected aesthetics is also achievable and worth aiming for in our industry – the look now works with the function. Of course, this also applies for the other hazardous substances that are banned according to directives 2000/53/EC and 2002/95/EC – mercury, lead, chromium, cadmium, PBB and PBDE – which are now already below the legally required limits for most products. This means that companies which manufacture in accordance with European directive 2002/95/EC – also known as RoHS (Reduction of Hazardous Substances) – can continue to use high performance couplings. In addition to the environmental and recycling aspect described, the corresponding surfaces also stand out for their extremely high strength capacity in the high temperature range, which has been proven through durability tests. Product Training for Customers, Daelers and Employees: This year, alongside training sessions when new products are introduced, we are offering dates where we will be dealing particularly with the various aspects in the low, middle or high pressure range. These training sessions (at RECTUS head office, or on your premises) target both novices and experts in the field of couplings, who can always discover something new in the training sessions through the direct contact with our product management. Information on dates and a detailed list of topics for our training sessions is available directly from Sabrina Feist in our product management department. For RECTUS AG employees in Nussdorf, 1st December 2006 heralded the start of a new era: after almost 48 years in the business, training manager (apprenticeship) Karl-Heinz (Heiner) Witt left the company. He started his apprenticeship as an industrial mechanic with Walter Klein Schweißtechnik in Stuttgart-Feuerbach, on 1st April 1959, at the age of 16 – as the first trainee of company founder Walter Klein. From 1962 to the present day, Heiner Witt felt very close to his company. As the training manager, he always saw himself as a “member of a big family, in which human values are still important despite international expansion.“ Whilst Karl-Heinz Witt will now finally be able to devote himself more to his family and his hobbies, Peter W. Klein has both a smile and a tear for the well-earned retirement of the training manager: ”With Karl-Heinz Witt, we lose not only our longest standing employee and a highly regarded colleague but also an immense wealth of knowledge and experience.“ The whole RECTUS family wishes “our Heiner“ many more years of fun and “joie de vivre”.
