A Little Buzz about Honey Bees
Like honey? Of course, and
maybe you know that the
honey bee is involved in
some way in every third bite
you take. Its labors result
in many other products
from the hive that range
from cosmetics to candles
to pharmaceuticals, dental
supplies and even shoe
polish. Afraid of being stung
by a honey bee? Fear not!
The honey bee could care
less about you unless you
provoke it in some way or get
very close to its hive. Unlike
the wasp, it dies if it uses its
stinger and will only sting to
defend its brood and stored
honey. The honey bees that
you’ve seen out and about
have only one thing on their
mind, and that is to find
pollen and nectar.
The benefits of honey go
beyond its great taste. Honey
is a great natural source
of carbohydrates which
provide strength and energy
to our bodies. It is known for
its effectiveness in instantly
boosting the performance
and endurance of athletes
while reducing their muscle
fatigue. Honey can also be
a powerful immune system
booster. Its antioxidant and
anti-bacterial properties can
help improve your digestive
system and help you stay
healthy and fight disease.
Honey has also been
recognized as one of the
most natural home remedies
to treat a wide range of
ailments and complaints
with cuts, infections, burns,
hangovers, sore throats, and
sleeplessness being among
them.
You may have heard about
honey bee decline and
Colony Collapse Disorder
(CCD). The loss of honey
bees in the U.S. is a serious
matter that, if not resolved,
will soon result in much
of our food coming from
Central America with little
control on how it is grown.
Pennsylvania has seen a
decline in hives from 80,000
in 1982 to below 30,000 in
2002. This decline continues
and is typical of the rate
of the decline nationwide.
These
losses
represent
millions in lost revenue
to Pennsylvania farmers
because of the reduction of
honey bee pollinated crops
including apples, peaches,
cherries,
cucumbers,
pumpkins, and others.
The introduction of several
types of mites and the
viruses that they carry,
as well as a new pest, the
hive beetle, are part of the
dilemma.

Ahhchoo!
This year our mild winter ended with a
flourish of warm weather, bringing a welcome
surprise to many Americans. For the 25-35
percent of people who suffer from hay fever,
the early spring meant an unusually early
start to allergy season. In some parts of the
country, allergists saw a rush of patients as
far back as February experiencing sneezing,
sniffling, and stuffed sinuses brought on
by this unexpectedly balmy weather. The
problem was compounded in many places by
a lack of rain, which usually helps wash away
the pollen.
Fortunately, a number of steps can reduce
allergy suffering. Since pollen is generally a
morning phenomenon, patients with allergies
are better off avoiding morning runs and
errands and shifting those activities toward
the afternoon hours. Outdoor exercise in
particular should be moved to later in the
day, since a run or bike ride in the morning
will cause deeper and more rapid breathing,
which leads to more pollen ingestion. Many
of you also wait until your symptoms start
acting up before taking allergy medications.
On days when pollen counts are likely to be
high, you may try being proactive by taking it
beforehand. An alternative to medications is
the neti pot. The nasal irrigator has shown to
be effective against allergies in some studies.
Since pollen clings to your skin and clothes,
leaving your shoes at the door, changing your
clothes, and washing your hands promptly
when coming indoors are good preventative
measures. You may also consider washing
your hair in the evening as pollen attaches
to hair especially easily. Most important is
to find out what in particular sets off your
allergies. With an allergy skin test, your
physician can identify the precise offenders
that trigger your symptoms.
You may be surprised that it isn’t ragweed,
dander, or pollen after all. You may be
one of the two million Americans who
are, in fact, allergic or have sensitivity to
fragrances. Skin care products, colognes,
perfumes, moisturizers, soaps, deodorants,
and aftershave have a nice smell but contain
chemicals that your immune system may not
like very much. You may also find yourself
developing a killer of a headache because
of either riding an elevator or sitting in a
church pew, with someone who was a bit too
generous with a scented application. Do you
know people who have carried ambiance to
the extreme with too many lighted candles in
their home or place of business? Low-allergy
or hypoallergenic products may contain
fragrances that aren’t obvious because of a
less aromatic smell. Fragrance-free products
may have a masking fragrance added to
cover up the smell of the chemicals. Reaction
to various products can be aggravated by
exposure to the sun.
Another allergy is from cigarette smoke,
caused by the numerous toxic chemicals
and irritants found in cigarettes. It bears
repeating that smoking does not just harm
smokers but also those around them. It has
been shown that children of smokers tend to
have more respiratory infections and asthma
than those of non-smokers. In addition,
secondhand smoke can increase the risk of
allergic complications such as sinusitis and
bronchitis.

Top 10 Scams Targeting Seniors
Although we have written about this topic
and have had numerous speakers at Encore
warning you about the potential danger to you,
financial scams targeting seniors have become
so prevalent that they’re now considered “the
crime of the 21st century.” This is so because
seniors are thought to have a significant
amount of money sitting in their accounts.
It’s not just wealthy seniors who are targeted;
low income older adults are also at risk for
this kind of abuse. Alarmingly, strangers
do not head the list people who perpetrate
these crimes. Over 90% of all reported elder
abuse is committed by an older person’s
own family members, most often their adult
children, followed by grandchildren, nieces
and nephews, and others. Since financial
scams often go unreported or can be difficult
to prosecute, they are considered a “low-risk”
crime. They are devastating to many older
adults, however, and can leave you in a very
vulnerable position with little time to recoup
your losses.
The following lists the top ten scams targeting
seniors:
1. Health Care/Medicare/Health Insurance
Fraud – perpetrators may pose as a Medicare
representative to get you to give them your
personal information, or they may provide
bogus services at makeshift mobile clinics,
use the information to bill Medicare, and
then pocket the money.
2. Counterfeit Prescription Drugs – this
happens more often on the Internet as
you search for better prices on specialized
medications. The danger is that besides
paying for something that will not help your
medical condition, the drugs may be unsafe,
making it hard on your body as well as your
wallet.
3. Funeral & Cemetery Scams – one approach
is that scammers read obituaries and call
or attend the funeral service claiming the
deceased had an outstanding debt owed to
them. Another tactic involves disreputable
funeral homes who add unnecessary charges
to a bill.

Prevent Identity Theft

Top 10 Scams Targeting Seniors
Continued from Page 6
4. Fraudulent Anti-Aging Products –
whether it’s fake Botox or completely bogus
homeopathic remedies that do nothing, there
is money and health consequences in the
anti-aging business.
5. Telemarketing - with no face-to-face
interaction and no paper trail, these
scams are incredibly hard to trace. Once a
successful deal has been made, your name is
then shared with similar schemers looking
for easy targets, sometimes defrauding you
repeatedly. Examples of telemarketing fraud
include: The Pigeon Drop, The Fake Accident
Ploy, and Charity Scams.
6. Internet Fraud – pop-up browser windows
simulating virus-scanning software will
fool you into either downloading a fake but
expensive anti-virus program or an actual
virus that will open up whatever information
is on your computer (i.e. email/phishing
scams).
7. Investment Schemes – from the pyramid
schemes to fables of a Nigerian prince looking
for a partner to claim inheritance money
to complex financial products, investment
schemes have long been a successful way to
take advantage of you.
8. Homeowner/Reverse Mortgage Scams –
many of you own your own home and this
valuable asset increases the potential dollar
value of a certain scam.
9. Sweepstakes & Lottery Scams – before
you claim your winnings, you need to make
some sort of payment to unlock the supposed
prize.
10. The Grandparent Scam – the victim
believes the caller is a grandchild with an
unexpected financial problem and asks the
grandparent to wire money and don’t tell the
parents.
If any of the above instances happen to you,
call the police, your bank, and credit card
companies immediately.

Attorney Talk
I am writing this column on June 6, 2012,
the 68th anniversary of D-Day, the Allied
invasion of France in World War II. It is a
chief event of many of today’s seniors, some
of whom saw action on that day. We salute
the “greatest generation” for their sacrifice
and gallantry shown. This includes my
late father, who was a waist gunner on a
B-17 in the air force.
Upstate Pennsylvania is no longer a sleepy
area, where city-folk have hunting cabins.
Marcellus Shale operations by major
energy companies to extract natural gas
has brought about many changes. Some
of the issues are granting easements for
the underground rights of land; reporting
of royalties to those on fixed incomes, who
suddenly receive a windfall; interpreting
the lease agreements offered; sharing
of the royalties among family members
(and others) whose formerly, seeming
inconsequential interest in the land, now
assumes a large importance; potential
damage to the land through “fracking” or
using water and sand to extract the natural
gas, which according to some, may harm
the environment; restructuring ownership
of the land through a family partnership;
tax consequences of a windfall; and estate
planning to have continuity of family
ownership of the land. I have had reports
that exploration is as close as Bucks
County. All this affects seniors.

Inquiring Minds Want To Know
Suggestion:
Water taste has gotten worse.
Response:
Three
people
submitted
comments
regarding the taste of the water. The filter
ran out and it was the consensus of the
kitchen team that the filter really made
no difference. Apparently it does. Thanks
for bringing this to our attention. We will
replace the filter.
Suggestion:
The salad was the worst I’ve ever had.
Everyone at my table agrees with me.
Response:
The salads are usually quite nice. Can
you give me more information, date it was
bad? Meal it was served with? I really can’t
make this better without more information.
Sorry.
Suggestion:
One or more hard chairs in the library. I
find the soft chairs too hard to get out of.
Good job to the lady organizing the books!
Response:
Yes, kudos to Cass Janco and newest
volunteer, Joy Ballard, for keeping the
library so nice! You are welcome to take
a chair from any of the rooms in the back
hall that would be more comfortable for
you. We set the room up like a parlor – but
understand the issue of getting in and out of
those chairs. Please make it comfortable for
yourself.

Suggestion:
Yoga Class.
Response:
We have tried this before and not many
people came to class and it had to be
cancelled. It may be time to try it again.
Next time we have an opening in the
schedule, we will look for a yoga instructor.
Suggestion:
Every time I walk into the Center, I enjoy
the beautiful flower borders. Thanks to all
who planted and care for them.
Response:
Hear, Hear! Most recently we have the
people from Wal-Mart and the Collins’
to thank for the flowers lining our
entranceway. We have also had gifts of
plants from our fitness instructor, Paula
Klauger, and the township crew help us
maintain our property. Thanks to all!!!
Suggestion:
The Encore Bulletin – thanks for the
interesting articles to read. The May/
June bulletin paper has changed. The
spreadsheet for calendar is split and the
quality of paper is not as nice.
Response:
We agree. Our printer suddenly went out
of business and made arrangements with
another printer to take over our account.
Needless to say, we were not happy with
the results. We have found a new printer,
but the paper size has to be reduced and the
cost has significantly increased. Hopefully
this newsletter is better for you.
Suggestion:
Every month at Bingo there is a table in the
front of people who won’t stop talking. Can
it be announced that people should stay
quiet while numbers are being called?
Response:
Yes. We will make that announcement.
Have a suggestion? Leave it in the box
located in entrance foyer.
Thoughts from Bev…
Recently, I asked my college roommate
for gift ideas for someone who was going
through cancer treatments. Bev had been
through this experience ten years ago. She is
married but doesn’t have children; her Mom
and siblings live far away. Her response, I
thought, was worth sharing with you.
“Everyone is so different. For me, I loved
when people emailed, phoned, sent cards,
made short visits, etc. I really appreciated
it when my neighbors would bring over
custard, or a spinach quiche or something
for dinner that I wouldn’t normally prepare.
I had a craving for chicken soup after each
chemo…things like that are so simple but
wow meant so much. While undergoing
treatment, nutrition is so important.
For gift items, I loved the Teddy bears. I
would place it on my belly to just ease
the pain. My brother sent me a Vermont
Teddy Bear with a band aide on its belly,
also received a pound puppy, and even the
little neighbor girls gave me a ty bear. I still
have all of the bears I received sitting on
our family window sill. They bring a smile
and remembrance of those kind souls who
thought of me during a very difficult time.
to care for anything and especially in no
mood to watch the gorgeous flowers die.
The thought of dying was so close to where
I thought I was going that I hated being
reminded of my mortality by watching
flowers wither away.
A social worker gave me one piece of advice
that helped me to have some moments of
joy. She advised me just to get out of the
house…see a movie, take a walk…anything
to help reduce the angst of the “trauma” at
hand. If the patient likes movies, a couple
of tickets to a movie, a play, or even sports
event would be a nice gesture. Perhaps a
gift certificate to a restaurant would be
appreciated. Magazines with short articles
are great. My mind was so crazy; I couldn’t
concentrate or even think about reading a
novel. If there is pain, perhaps a massage
may be relaxing…a gift certificate to a spa
or salon. What about needlework? A friend
tried to help me crochet ornaments for
Christmas but then again, my mind was so
nutsy…couldn’t concentrate.
Just being there…just to
wonderful and a gift in itself."

Honey Bees
Continued from Cover Page
Also some strains of an older bacterial
disease, American Foulbrood, have become
resistant to the only antibiotic treatment
for this disease. It is important to note that
none of these bee diseases are harmful to
man. Intense research is ongoing to solve or
develop bees more resistant to these diseases.
The above diseases kill off hives at different
rates but CCD can result in a total loss of the
bees in a hive almost overnight. Building
evidence indicates that use of powerful
Neonicotinoid based insecticides, now
common use on genetic engineered crops, are
a factor in CCD. Under pressure from the
industry and individual beekeepers, the FDA
has finally agreed to certify all insecticides
and look into certification tests that relate to
long term effects on honey bees.
For more Buzz on the above, to learn about
the interesting life of the honey bee in the hive
and beekeeping in general, stop by Encore
on July 17th at 1:00PM for our program Bee
Educated.

Meet a Volunteer-Carl and Bruce Wahl
This father and
son team is no
stranger to our
Saturday Bingo
players. As soon
as you cross our
threshold on the
second Saturday
of each month,
you are greeted
by Carl and Bruce, who are very eager to
sell you admission and specials packets,
with a promise that you have a winner!
Carl’s association with us did not begin with
Saturday Bingo, however, but on May 18,
1983 to be exact. For Bruce it was Members
Council’s newest fundraiser that called him
to volunteer, and he willingly stepped up to
the plate. Carl and Bruce had very similar
starts in life too. Both were raised in East
Greenville, were involved in sports while in
high school, and served in the armed services.
Let’s step back in time a little to unravel their
differences.
When Carl graduated from high school in
1943, he was drafted into the Army and as
an affiliate of the Air Force, worked with
anti aircraft missiles. On Thanksgiving Day,
November 28, 1946, Carl and his sweetheart,
Dot, joined hearts and hands. Marriage
blessed them with their two children, Linda
and Bruce. Carl’s employment was always
behind a wheel, as a driver of bakery and milk
trucks and Upper Perk school buses. Many
of you will remember that Carl also drove
our center’s bus for 21 years, logging over
100,000 miles on that jewel. When not taking
us hither and yon, Carl was a Mayor of East
Greenville, a driving force on his Borough
Council, a member and past president of
the Lions Club, and a commander of the
American Legion Perkiomen Post 184.
At Carl’s retirement dinner in 2004, he
claimed that Encore Experiences (then
Harleysville Senior Center) “was the best
senior center in the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania.” We are so blessed that Carl
and Bruce have helped make this true. They
may wish to retire from volunteering some
day but until then, will keep on truckin’!
The athletic field was a familiar place for
Bruce as the bass drummer for the Upper
Perk High School Band. Then from 1967-71,
the Air Force stationed him in several areas
of the country as a computer maintenance
technician. After his military discharge and
a year of working odd jobs, Bruce entered
Northwest Missouri State University,
majoring in mathematics with a minor in
coaching. This latter concentration was
especially helpful as a four year manager of
the school’s baseball team. Armed with a B.S.
degree in Secondary Education for the next
25 years Bruce was on the other side of the
desk teaching mathematics at three Missouri
locations. In 2003 he decided to retire for
the first time and return home. Back in the
area to assist his parents, Bruce worked as a
math tutor for the Boyertown School District,
until he retired again in 2011. His days are
now spent with Carl and Dot, selling those
specials and daubers at Saturday Bingo,
enjoying Civil War sites and minor league
baseball games when he can.
