This forum will also provide an opportunity for case discussions and exchange of ideas among members of the interdisciplinary team. Outline the general functions of the four cortical lobes of the brain. Explain the inhibitory role of the brains' frontal lobe cortex on behavior. Discuss the role of impairment of sub-cortical structures [e.g., hypothalamus] on behavioral sequeleau and across brain injury disease modalities. Describe two of the general components of the differential diagnoses of partial {simple & complex} seizures vs. generalized seizures and psychosis. List 3 potential targets of psychotropic medications and discuss the ways in which these drugs influence their targets. Describe techniques that can be used to effectively manage neuro-pharmacy for persons with acquired brain injuries. Summarize why our approach to managing drugs is reductionist and difficult to generalize. Define two possible functions of behavior. Contrast and describe behavioral antecedents, precursors and consequences. Explain the concept of Positive Behavior Supports. Differentiate between positive and negative reinforcement and provide an example of each. Summarize three side effects of punishment and construct a rationale for avoiding the use of punishment in the treatment of challenging behaviors. Describe two types of behavior data collection. Spier, MD, BIM, CBIS Tom Hall, MA, CBIST Dr. Eric T. Spier, MD, BIM, CBIS Eric T. Spier, M.D. is currently practicing as a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physician. He serves as a Medical Director of Acquired Brain Injury at Highlands Regional Rehabilitation Hospital, and with the Mentis El Paso, Neuro Rehabilitation Facility. He is also an adjunct professor at the University of Texas at El Paso, and at The Paul Foster School of Medicine in El Paso. Dr. Spier attended medical school at the University of Texas in Houston, Texas. His medical residency training occurred between the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut and the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Dr. Spier is currently working to coordinate a spectrum of resources that will serve Acquired Brain Injury patients in the El Paso community. Tom Hall, MA, CBIST Tom Hall is employed at Riverside Community Care in Massachusetts as Associate Director for Clinical Services. His career spans over 30 years of post–acute neurobehavioral care in Acquired Brain Injury. Tom’s academic training is in learning theory and he holds a Master’s degree in Rehab Counseling. He is a Certified Brain Injury Specialist Trainer and serves as Vice Chair of Governance for the Academy of Certified Brain Injury Specialists. He also chairs the ACBIS International Certification Committee overseeing the development of brain injury certification in Ireland and the UK. Tom has made numerous presentations on neurobehavioral topics and has published in the journal Behavioral Interventions on memory loss associated with Fluoxetine. Nursing: Nursing contact hours have been applied for through the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Physical Therapists: This course has been approved by the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners as meeting continuing competence requirements for PTs and PTAs for 0.70 continuing competence units. Occupational Therapists: This course is offered for .70 TOTA CEUs. The assignment of TOTA CEUs does not imply endorsement of specific course content, products, or clinical procedures by TOTA. REGISTRATION POLICY The registration fee for the conference includes materials, continental breakfast and lunch. You must be registered and paid by March 13, 2015 to receive the discounted price. Door/Walk-in registration will not be guaranteed due to space limitations. Do not fax or mail your registration to be received after March 13, 2015. Registration after March 13, 2015 will be taken at the door only. Your written notice of cancellation will be accepted for a refund of registration fees less a $40 processing fee if received on or before March 13, 2015. Cancellations will not be accepted after March 13, 2015. After this date, there will be no refunds.
