Group Piano for Youth at CMC
Group piano classes at CMC follow a two-year
sequential course curriculum. Learning in a group setting is a fun way to introduce this fabulous instrument,
while getting “hands on” experience, making new friends
& gaining musical skills!
All classes are held in CMC’s piano lab - students use
digital pianos that simulate acoustic grands
Sequential Classes – Piano Foundations Term I,
II, III, & IV, then Piano Performer for two to four
terms. Then Piano Laboratory is available.
Clear two-year course curriculum – Students are
more equally matched for a successful group class
experience. See the chart below for more details.
Piano Foundations and Performer classes use
books in the Piano Town series (available at CMC).
Progress Review – With the instructor’s guidance
& approval, a student may repeat a term or advance. Two weeks before the end of each term the
instructor makes evaluations & forwards those to
the office staff. The family will be notified only if a
change is required.
Consistent Schedule – During the school year,
in most cases students continue at the same day &
time unless repeating a term or skipping ahead.
Note: Students taking “My First Piano Class” in
the summer should register for
“Piano Foundations Level 1” Fall Term.

Which method do I choose?
String Lesson Program students at CMC have a choice of
two distinct ways of studying their instrument in weekly
lessons. How much the parent is able to attend lessons &
work with the student at home will have a large part to play
in making this choice.
Teacher/Student method (Traditional):
This is the classic one-on-one approach to learning an instrument. The string player will practice every day at home
between lessons on assignments given to the student by
the instructor. Parent involvement is not required, however parents of young students are often encouraged by the
instructor to assist the child in the practice room. Parent
observation of lessons is usually optional. Parents do not
have to be musically trained. Beginning students start
with 30 minute lessons. Longer lessons are by instructor
approval.
Teacher/Parent/Student method (Suzuki):
This is a family approach to music instruction that creates
a “learning triangle” between teacher, parent & student.
The parent, who does not need to be musically trained,
learns with the student & serves as the role model for the
young player between lessons. Parents assist students in
their practice at home each day as assigned by the instructor. When the student is not practicing, the family listens
to the recordings of the songs as much as possible to create
the immersion that the method requires for the best learning
experience. The goal is that music becomes like another
language in the home. Parents of new students are required
to attend the Suzuki Parent Orientation class in September
prior to placement with a teacher. Students are placed into
either shared private lessons or private lessons, depending on
their age, family preference, & instructor recommendation.
CMC recommends children between age 4 & 7 study with a
Suzuki or “hybrid” Suzuki/Traditional instructor for a more
successful learning experience.

String Lesson Program Information & Policies
Practice Requirements
CMC’s String
Program for Youth
strives to provide the
highest quality music
education to as many
dedicated students as
possible, regardless of
ability to pay. In a continuing effort to achieve
these goals, students &
parents should seriously
consider the requirements below before
committing to lessons
at CMC.
Students who are not progressing in-step with their ability
to learn will receive instruction on how to improve practice
habits. If no progress is made, CMC will require the
student & parent to sign an agreement on how to improve
practice.
Musicianship Requirements
*Applies to School Year Only*
The CMC String Program for Youth is more than just lessons. It is a sequential curriculum designed to foster wellrounded musicians. To this end, CMC makes the following
requirements for students taking lessons September - June:
Pre-Registration Process
Complete the pre-registration form on page 15 &
return it to the CMC office. This registration covers
Summer Term only. Pre-Registration officially begins
April 12th. One form per student, please. Families should
register as soon as possible for the best chance of getting
preferred times & teachers.
A Special Note About Summer Term Scheduling
CMC understands that during the summer, families are
away some weeks for vacation, & that during others children participate in camps or activities. To accommodate
this, we offer flexible lesson scheduling Summer Term to
ensure that students receive as many lessons as possible.
Please indicate any weeks your child is unavailable.
It is a great help to call in any changes to your schedule
that come up after the application form is submitted!
Once assigned, Summer lesson times & instructors are
only valid for July & August
All continuing & new students must enroll again for
School Year 10-11 (Pre-Registration begins August 9)
Be sure to provide all the information requested
on the form. Incomplete forms or those missing a signature will be returned, so call the CMC office with any
questions you may have before submitting.
Parents of new Suzuki Method students who
continue in the school year are required to register for &
attend a Parent Orientation in September (see the School
Year 10-11 catalog for details, available mid-August).
Wait patiently for a call from the office confirming a lesson time. This will occur about two weeks before
lessons begin.
Pay tuition at the time of registration. Once tuition
is paid, the student is officially registered.
14 Community Music Center
It is important that students take lessons seriously, practice
every day (at least as long as their lesson length), complete
any homework assigned by instructors, & progress in-step
with their ability to learn.
Beginning string students age 5 and up are required
to concurrently enroll in, attend regularly, and do satisfactory work in a Music Skills class (see School Year 10-11
catalog for information, or inquire at the office).
Continuing string students are required to concurrently enroll in, attend regularly, and do satisfactory work
in Skills or other ensemble class (see School Year 10-11
catalog for more information). Students who are receiving
training of like quality elsewhere may apply for an exemption from an additional CMC activity.
Attendance Requirements & Policies
Because regular attendance is important, lessons & classes
should not be missed except in unavoidable instances. As
a courtesy to everyone an absence affects, the CMC office
should be notified as much in advance as possible to allow
for instructor schedule adjustments. Absences are classified
as either Excused or Unexcused.
Excused Absence: Student illness or other unavoidable cause with notification as defined below. There is no
makeup week during Summer term, so excused absences
will be credited.
Student Illness - CMC is notified at least one hour before
the scheduled lesson time. Only one illness per term may
be excused.
Other Unavoidable Causes - CMC is notified at least
one week before the scheduled lesson time. This allows
time to notify the teacher and make necessary schedule
changes.
Unexcused Absence: Any cause not listed above. No
credits or make-ups will be offered for Unexcused Absences.
Because space is limited, a student may be dropped from
the program if any of the above requirements are not met.

SUMMER 2010 – FOR PRIVATE LESSONS – YOUTH ONLY (CONTINUED)
How to Register
1. Complete this registration form and return it to CMC after reading Program Requirements below.
x This Pre-Registration is for Summer only. All students need to register again (in mid-August) for the school year.
x Parents of new Suzuki Method students are required to register for & attend a parent orientation in September.
x Instructors may require purchase of additional materials not included in listed registration fee.
x Out-of-District tuition is higher for participants outside of City of Portland limits; contact the office for details.
2. Wait patiently for a call from the office confirming a lesson time. This occurs about 2 weeks before lessons begin.
If we cannot place a student, we will maintain a waitlist through early August.
3. Pay tuition at the time of confirmation. Once payment is received, the student is officially registered.
String Program for Youth – Requirements
CMC's String Program for Youth strives to provide the highest-quality music education for as many dedicated students as
possible, regardless of ability to pay. To this end, CMC makes the following requirements, which parents & students should
carefully consider before committing to lessons at CMC.
1. Practice Requirements
Students should practice daily for at least as much time as their lesson length, complete any homework assigned by instructors,
and progress in keeping with their ability to learn. Note: Students who fail to progress to the best of their ability will receive
instruction on how to improve practice habits. If progress is still not made, CMC will require the student & parent to sign &
fulfill a practice-improvement agreement.
2. Musicianship Requirements (School Year only - waived during Summer Term)
The CMC program is more than just lessons. It is a sequential curriculum designed to foster well-rounded musicians.
x Beginning string students are required to enroll in, attend regularly, & do satisfactory work in On My Way With Basic
Skills (age 5–7), Skills I (age 7–13), or Theory & Practice (age 13 & up.) Four-year-olds are excused from this requirement, but
are encouraged to take Launch Pad to Learning. Fee is only $15 for string lesson students.
x Continuing string students are required to enroll in, attend regularly, and do satisfactory work in an appropriate Skills class
($15), or Orchestra, The Center Singers, Voice, Piano, Guitar, Suzuki Group Class, or Chamber Music (fees vary; see catalog
listings about pre-requisites, special requirements, schedules, & pricing.)
x The musicianship requirement may be satisfied if the student is receiving suitable training elsewhere. This must be
documented with an Exemption Form. See the CMC office for details.
x Students who begin in Summer become subject to the musicianship requirements upon enrolling for Fall Term.
3. Attendance Requirements & Policies
Regular attendance is important. Lessons & classes should not be missed except in unavoidable circumstances. When a student
must be absent, notify the CMC office as much in advance as possible to allow for instructor schedule adjustments. Absences are
either excused or unexcused, as defined below:
Excused Absence:
x Student Illness – CMC must be notified at least one hour before the scheduled lesson time. Only one illness per term may be
Excused. Subsequent illnesses will be Unexcused.
x Other Unavoidable Causes – CMC must be notified at least one week before the scheduled lesson time. This allows time to
notify the teacher & make schedule adjustments. One Excused Absence may be made up at the instructor's discretion. Additional
Excused Absences will be credited.
Unexcused Absence – Any cause not listed above. No credits or makeups will be offered for Unexcused Absences.
4. Causes for Dropping a Student
Space in the String Program is limited. At CMC's discretion, students may be dropped for any of the following:
x Failure to progress to the best of their ability.
x Failure to fulfill the terms of a signed practice agreement.
x Failure to fulfill the musicianship requirement.
x Failure to maintain good attendance.
NOTE: A student may be dropped for two Unexcused Absences a term, three Excused Absences in a row, or four Excused
absences during a term.
Extenuating circumstances may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Community Music Center
Need-Based Scholarship Application
Portland Parks & Recreation recognizes that some of the residents of the City of Portland require lower tuition to attend
certain recreational activities. The Community Music Center has its own scholarship process because the tuition subsidy is
provided by a non-profit fundraising organization through generous donations.
How to apply
1. Submit a scholarship form with your registration. A spot will be reserved for you during the scholarship application
process. For the String Instruction Program, submit the scholarship form with your pre-registration. One form per student per
class, please. Incomplete forms will be returned un-processed.
2. Submit documentation once per year with the scholarship form to substantiate your income level. The information
requested is confidential and is necessary to help determine the degree of need for each applicant. Scholarships will be denied
without documentation once per year.
3. When scholarship is approved, pay tuition balance, or request scheduled payments.
Note: Resident passes for out-of-district clients are not subsidized by scholarships. CMC may limit scholarships for multiple
classes. Scholarship amounts may be adjusted through work-study, in which case recipients complete a volunteer application
form. Scholarships may be denied for clients not meeting their payment commitment, program requirements, and/or
maintaining at least 80% attendance.

INSTRUMENT RENTALS
Community Music Center has a limited number of
violins, violas, cellos, & guitars available for enrolled
students to rent. Rental cost is $45 per term, due
at time of rental. Scholarships are available. Note:
young beginning Suzuki violin students usually begin with a “box” violin and wait a few weeks before
using the real violin.
Rental process
1. Inform the office staff you would like to reserve
a rental instrument in person or over the phone.
Your name will be put on a waiting list. Note: If
you don’t know the instrument size needed for
younger students, bring them in to CMC or a rental
shop for a fitting.
2. We will notify you of rental availability 1-2
weeks before the term begins and schedule a time
to arrange for pick-up prior to the beginning of the
term.
Preference is given to scholarship students,
then youth, & then adults.

INCLUSION SERVICES
FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
We advocate & provide accommodations for people
who have a disability/special need to receive equal
opportunity to fully participate in Portland Parks &
Recreation programs offered citywide.
How it Works
First, decide what activity you want to do & at which
PP&R site you would like to enroll. Once selected,
register for the class. When registering, let the PP&R
site know that you will need accommodations to participate in the activity. Through conversations with the
participant, site & Inclusion Services, the best way to
provide the accomodation will be determined.
A general program may be adapted using auxiliary aids
& services, but the basic structure of the activity remains the same. Accommodations are made as needed
& can be flexible & creative, ensuring the participant
engages as independently as possible.
If you have questions about Inclusion Services, please
call 503-823-4328 V/TTY. A minimum of ten-business days (Monday-Friday) advance notice is required.
The Inclusion Services staff will do their best to accommodate each participant.

55 Years of Music Education
The History of CMC
The Community Music Center has been providing music education for over five decades.
1955 From the vision of Portland Parks & Recreation Director Dorothea Lensch, music classes
begin at Knott Street Community Center (now Matt
Dishman Community Center) in Northeast Portland
under the direction of Robert Crowley.
1958 The growing music program, dubbed the
Community Music Center, moves to a new home at
the Woodstock Community Center under the leadership of Isadore Tinkleman.
1960
The Francis St. Firehouse was built in 1912 for horse-drawn
wagons. Decomissioned in 1958, it was used as a storage
facility until 1969, when it was renovated as the home of the
Community Music Center. Above: 1912. Below: c. 1995
Community Music Center, Inc. is formed as
a non-profit organization to support music education
through Portland Parks & Recreation with affordable
tuition & need-based scholarships.
Pictured above (left to right): John Gray, Ernestine Oringdulph, Isadore Tinkleman (seated), Robert Findley, &

1969
Activities move to the newly renovated
firehouse on SE Francis Street, with the generous
assistance from Robert & Ernestine Oringdulph
and John & Elizabeth Gray, among others. Oregon
Symphony musician Philip Murthe serves as director.
1982 Charles Farmer takes on the directorship of the Center, remodels the building to increase
access, and broadens the program to serve record
numbers of students.

Philip & Gayle Neuman Celebrate 30 Years at CMC
The forever young & energetic husband-andwife early music duo Philip & Gayle Neuman have given three decades (or six, if you
combine them!) of music instruction leading
CMC’s Renaissance wind & voice classes.
“It’s been great fun to continue the class that
Arthur Perrow started so many years ago &
add to the early music offerings at CMC,”
comment the pair. Hear them perform at the
Anniversary Gala April 18 (see page 3 for more
information), at which time we will celebrate
this tremendous milestone of community
service.
Thank you Phil & Gayle!
Gayle Stuwe Neuman, a performer on violin,
recorder, sackbut, & many other instruments, is also
a vocalist who has received international acclaim
for her renditions of music of the ancient Greeks.
She has performed for audiences in the U.S., Japan,
Israel, Turkey, Greece, Canada, Norway, Germany,
& members of the royal family in Jordan. Gayle is a
member of the Trail Band & performs with Cappella
Romana & the Portland Baroque Orchestra Chorus.
She has played under the baton of Monica Huggett
& Ton Koopman. In addition to her Recorder &
Renaissance Song Classes at CMC, she teaches an
Ancient, Medieval, & Renaissance Music History at
Marylhurst University. She has given workshops and
presentations at many institutions including Oberlin
Conservatory, Rice University, Cleveland Museum of
Art, & the Getty Museum.

and numerous other wind and string instruments,
has produced & recorded seven CDs for Pandourion
Records & has written and recorded for productions
by Oregon Public Broadcasting. He has played for
audiences on three continents, including performances at several ancient theatre sites in Greece. He
teaches Counterpoint & Orchestration at the University of Portland & Ancient, Medieval, & Renaissance Music History at Marylhurst University. Philip
is a member of the Trail Band, has performed under
the baton of Christopher Hogwood & Nicolas McGeegan, recorded with the American Bach Soloists,
& has played in the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, The Chicago Chorale, Handel & Haydn Society
Orchestra, & Spiritus Collective. He has composed,
arranged & transcribed over a thousand works for
recorder ensemble, brass ensemble, & symphonic
wind ensemble.
Gayle & Phil also cofounded & co-direct the Oregon Renaissance Band, now in its 18th season. Together they have built or made over 400 early wind
& stringed instruments, including crumhorns, corna
musen, racketts, & vielles.
Yes, the above is NOT a typographical error: these
two people have actually done all that, & more. Just
