COOLING OFF
AREA OFFERS MANY BEACHES
By Krysti Smaldone
For The Leader-Herald
FONDA - If you want to beat the summer heat in Fulton, Montgomery and Hamilton counties, you don't have to go far. The area
has plenty of public beaches.
"The weather's been great," said Gina DaBiere-Gibbs, the director of tourism at the Fulton Montgomery Regional Chamber of
Commerce. "It's been hot so [the beaches] have probably been
packed."
Among the public beaches in the Fulton County area are the
Caroga Lake Campground, Northampton Beach, Northville Vil-

lage Beach, Pine Lake and the Town of Mayfield Beach. There are
also numerous other beach spots with public access.
"I think people enjoy being out on the lake. Not everyone has
a boat, but it's a great family activity if you just want to make a
day out of it," said DaBiere-Gibbs.
Some beaches such as Pine Lake, located at 131 Timberline
Lane in Caroga Lake, offer boat rentals to day visitors. In addition,
Pine Lake also offers day use of its sand beach, mini golf course

and hiking trails. The beach has a concession stand that sells
pizza and ice cream.
Northampton offers boat, canoe, rowboat and kayak rentals to
visitors. Northampton is one of the three beaches on the Great
Sacandaga Lake with a natural sand beach and a guarded swimming area.
The Caroga Lake campsite beach is open to campers and day
visitors who want to escape the heat.
According to Dave Winchell, the state Department of Environmental Conservation Region 5 spokesman, attendance at the
Caroga Lake swimming area has been seeing its usual number
of visitors this season, and the heat is only adding to it.

"We have a very nice, comfortable beach; it's nearby and it's at
a reasonable price," said Winchell. "It's a nice beach, nice lake."
Going to the beach comes with a few rules that visitors are
asked to respect. As Winchell pointed out, the Caroga Lake campsite asks that no one bring glass or alcohol to the beach or take
toys into the water, even toys such as water noodles or boogie
boards. The campsite rules also requests that beachgoers respect
one another while they are at the lake.
Although different beaches have different rules, the ones listed
above are some standard expectations about the courtesies of
spending a day at the beach.
Many of the local beaches will remain open until at least Labor Day.

SAFEGUARD YOURSELF FROM
SUMMERTIME AILMENTS AND ACCIDENTS
S
ummer is often marked by vacations, recreational events
and relaxing moments spent by the pool or on the beach.
But when the weather heats up, so can potential health hazards
that can ruin all of the fun. The following are some of the more
common summertime ailments and how to avoid them.
• Lawn and garden injuries: Lawn and garden injuries
may not be common, but men, women and children should
exercise caution when using lawn and garden equipment.
Wear protective shoes and gloves and safety goggles.
Remember to turn off any motorized tools before attempting
to repair or unclog the blades.
• Swimmer’s ear: Water that remains in the ear canal after
swimming can make the ear a breeding ground for swimmer’s
ear, which is a bacterial infection. If water remains in your ear
for more than one night, visit an ear, nose and throat specialist.
• Insect bites and stings: Insects return when
temperatures rise. Mosquitoes may be the biggest nuisance,
but biting flies and wasps also make formidable foes. Use
insect repellent to keep the bugs away. Wear long pants
and check for ticks after hiking.

• Boating accidents: Many boating accidents can be
attributed to inexperience with the vessel and failure to take
proper safety precautions on the water. Make sure everyone
on the boat wears a life jacket, and follow proper boating
protocol throughout your trip.
• Dehydration: The body needs extra water on hot days,
especially when spending ample time outdoors.
Dehydration can cause dizziness and dry mouth and may
make you feel faint. Always drink plenty of water and avoid
alcoholic beverages and soft drinks, which can contribute to
dehydration when consumed in excess.

RIVERLINK CONCERT SERIES - ROOSEVELT DIME
7pm...Riverlink Park, Amsterdam
We all carry the Roosevelt Dime. It’s not a relic of the past, it’s the silver in your pocket. There was a time when Appalachian strings made romance with New Orleans rhythms, a love affair that yielded one of the most infectious
beats the world had ever heard. For Roosevelt Dime that time is now. Some would call it Rock & Roll, others Americana, but “Mardi-Grass” is more like it. Andrew Green - Banjo / Vocals Eben Pariser - Guitar / Vocals Tony Montalbano - Percussion / Vocals Craig Akin - Bass. Price: FREE!

GET THE SCOOP ON POOL SANITIZERS
M
any homeowners enjoy the convenience and
recreational value of having a pool in their backyards.
Pools can be a great spot to gather on warm days, often serving
as the centerpiece of summer recreation.
Pools require substantial upkeep to function properly and be
safe for swimming. The right combination of factors are needed
to maintain a proper water balance to prevent skin and eye
irritation as well as to ensure the water is clean. Sanitizers play
a significant role in ensuring that safety.
Various sanitizers are on the market, although people are most
familiar with chlorine-based sanitizers. The goal of a sanitizer is
to prevent the growth of bacteria and algae in pool water.
Sanitizers also will inhibit the growth of viruses and other
organic contaminants.
and this stabilizer will help buffer that effect. Since these
chlorine sources typically come in pucks or tablets, they can be
placed in feeders and will deliver consistent chlorine without
daily maintenance. Trichlor has one of the highest levels of
available chlorine of all pool sanitizers. However, one
disadvantage is that if the stabilizer levels build up too much
in the pool, you will require even more chlorine to combat this
effect, sometimes creating a cycle of chlorine ineffectiveness.
• Salt: Salt-cell pools use a process of electrolysis to extract
chlorine from the salt added to the specialized equipment,
thus sanitizing the pool automatically. Some people prefer salt
because it seems more natural and requires less maintenance.
• Bromine: Bromine is similar to chlorine. While the
byproducts of chlorine do not benefit pool water, bromine
byproducts can continue to sanitize the water, making it last
longer than chlorine. Bromine can be more expensive than
chlorine, which might deter homeowners looking for the
most cost-effective pool sanitizer.
First-time homeowners who have never had a pool may find it
challenging to choose a sanitizer that will work for them. Each
sanitizer has its share of pros and cons, but many homeowners
hope to find one that is both cost-effective and convenient. The
following are some of the sanitizers to consider.
Pool water chemistry can be a complex process. But
homeowners
have many options at their disposal when it comes
• Liquid chlorine: Sodium hypochlorite, also known as
time
to
choose
the right sanitizer.
bleach, is a common pool sanitizer. Liquid chlorine does not
have any additives and will not affect pool water in any
other way except for providing sanitation. Liquid chlorine
can be cumbersome to store and splashing the product
while adding it to the water can damage clothing.
• Cal-hypo: Calcium hypochlorite is another sanitizing option
for pools. It is usually sold in granular form because pucks or
sticks will break down too quickly in chlorine feeders. Calhypo is often an unstabilized form of chlorine, which means
it does not have a stabilizing chemical mixed with it to prevent
chlorine burn-off from the sun. Depending on your needs,
unstabilized chlorine can be an asset or a detriment.
• Dichlor and trichlor: Dichloro-s-triazinetrione and
trichloro-s-triazinetrione are two different stabilized chlorine
sources. They are mixed with a substance called cyanuric
acid, which helps prevent the quick usage of chlorine in
outdoor pools. Sunlight can reduce the efficacy of chlorine,
Sanitizers keep pool water safe for all swimmers.

RIVERLINK CONCERT SERIES - MATUTO
7pm...Riverlink Park, Amsterdam
Matuto’s songs sway hips and spark insights. Accordion, guitar, bass, drums, cavaquinho, zabumba, and triangle
whirl around the core of Matuto’s sound: the syncopations of Brazil and the traditions of the American South.
Bluegrass meets Brazil. An unlikely combination on paper, but on the dance floor, it just feels right.
Matuto is emerging internationally as a festival main-stage sensation. Rolling drums and quicksilver accordion licks,
earthy vibes and thoughtful reflections mingle in their Appalachia-gone-Afro-Brazilian sound. Price: FREE!

SUMMER FUN THAT IS CLOSE TO HOME
S
ummer is prime vacation season when travelers take trips to
every corner of the world. While faraway destinations
abound, those looking for fun can also find enjoyable activities
much closer to home.
Many communities come alive during the warmer weather, hosting an
array of locally driven events. People looking for a day of entertainment
or an evening of excitement may be able to find an event that’s just a
short car ride away. Pick up a local newspaper or log on to your town’s
official website to browse a listing of events in your community this
summer. Here are a few events you’re bound to find.
• Carnivals and fun fairs: Open land or empty parking lots can
be transformed into bustling carnivals in a matter of days.
Carnivals or fairs may be sponsored by private businesses or
local religious organizations looking to raise funds. Some fairs
are established by the county and attract participants from
near and far. Carnivals often boast a wide array of
entertainment, from amusement park-style rides to games of
chance to music.
square to larger events at beaches and boardwalks that draw
thousands of visitors.
• Food festivals: Various towns close down their Main Streets
from time to time to accommodate food festivals that feature a
variety of cuisines. Some food festivals may feature one
ingredient, such as garlic or cheese, while others may delve
deeper and offer broader menus. Food festivals allow visitors
to sample many different treats and may serve to advertise for
neighborhood eating establishments.
• Street fairs: Street fairs also may close down thoroughfares in
town. These events usually bring together a variety of vendors
selling their wares in an open market setting. You can make a
day of touring all of the vendor booths and buying handmade
items from local artisans.
• Outdoor movies: Local parks frequently host summer movie
nights when participants can view a movie on the big screen while
under the stars. This can be an informal way to get the entire
family together for a fun flick. Films are typically family-friendly
and schedules are available well in advance. Bring a blanket and
some snacks and enjoy an inexpensive evening together.
• Summer concert series: Summer concerts series typically
begin when the weather warms up, and music may not stop
playing until Labor Day. Concerts may range from more Many people need not travel far for a little summertime fun, as
intimate affairs that attract a few dozen people to a town many communities host fun events throughout the warmer months.
TURN CARNIVAL GAME ODDS IN YOUR FAVOR
M
id- to late-summer is peak carnival and fair season. During
this time of year, empty fields and parking lots are
transformed into entertainment wonders featuring rides, foods and
plenty of games of chance.
Carnival games are a fun diversion. Thousands and thousands of
fairgoers test their luck at these games when carnivals roll into town.
Games often seem as though they are stacked in the house’s favor,
but games are not impossible to win. A few pointers can increase any
player’s chances of winning.
• Ring toss: The object of this game is to throw a ring and have it
settle around the neck of a bottle. For the best chances, toss the
ring so that it remains as flat horizontally as possible. Think of
throwing it as you would a Frisbee®.
• Milk bottle pyramid: In this game, participants have to throw a
softball to knock over milk bottles stacked in a pyramid. It seems
easy, but sometimes the weight of the softball is not in proportion
to the weight of the bottles. The ball may be filled with cork, and
the bottles may be weighted on the bottom. Aim for the center of
the two lowest bottles and throw the ball as hard as you can.
game is never to raise the mallet higher than the height of the
mole. This ensures a faster swing and a quicker resetting to hit
the next mole that pops up.
• Balloons and darts: To counteract potentially dull darts, look for
the shiniest, thinnest balloons. Those are the ones that are inflated
the most. This will increase your chances of popping a balloon.
• Basketball shot: In this game, the rim of the basketball net is
likely smaller than regulation and the backboard may be stiffer
than players are accustomed to. In addition, the ball may be
overinflated so that it is more bouncy. Try a high arc that will help
you swish the ball. Otherwise, aim for the top of the square on
the backboard so that the ball will bank right into the net.
• Frog toss: Young children are drawn to this game because they
get to launch a rubber frog into the air and throw it toward a lily
pad. The chance of getting wet combined with pounding a mallet
can make this game quite attractive. To improve your odds of
winning, make the frog as small as possible by folding its legs
underneath the body. Aim high so that the frog is launched in a
high arc and has a better chance of landing in that lily pad cup.
• Whack-a-mole: This game is fun because a player can go after
whichever critter pops out of the hole. A key advantage to this
Carnival games can be entertaining. Players have a greater chance of
taking home a prize if they learn some secrets of each game they play.

• Don’t leave vegetables unattended. Vegetables are delicate and
can easily overcook if not monitored.
• When preparing vegetables, slice them to expose as much of the

1. Combine the watermelon chunks and basil in a colander placed over
a large bowl. Using a metal ladle or spoon, press the watermelon to
extract as much juice as possible (the remaining pulp should be fairly dry).
2. Season the juice with the sea salt and vinegar and strain through a
fine-mesh sieve into a large pitcher. Add the water, stir and serve.
Food pairings: Grill chicken or fish, feta and tomato salad, shortbread
cookies
Pressed Watermelon With Basil Water
Chef’s tip: Use yellow watermelon for an unexpected twist.
