Volume 43 Issue 3 Emeritus Club Newsletter Emeritus Club Newsletter Page 2 Winter 2015 Emeritus Club Newsletter Wesleyan to Offer New Health Science Major and First Online Cohort Program In the fall 2016, a new Bachelor of Health Science degree will be available for both new and current students at Wesleyan. The major, housed in the School of Nursing, will be available as both a four-year undergraduate degree on-campus as well as in an online cohort setting. New students entering in the fall semester will complete the major-specific courses online while completing the remainder of the liberal studies requirements in-seat. An online cohort program will be available to nontraditional students, or students entering college at a non-typical age, where all classes, including liberal studies, would be completed online. This option requires two classes each fall, spring, May, and summer term and would be a feasible five-year option for those students who are entering with no prior college credit. Both trajectories include an internship. Graduates in a health science major are qualified for a myriad of health-related jobs including positions in a hospital or long-term care, such as activities director, clinical outcomes analyst, or quality improvement manager; community or ambulatory care services, such as non-profit health-related organizations, home care or hospice, or pharmaceutical sales; and pre-professional programs in higher education, such as Master of Public Health, Occupational Therapy, and Physician’s Assistant. The Bachelor of Health Sciences will also prepare students for degree completion in any allied health field, allowing the student to begin the secondary program with an Associate of Science degree. For more information on the program, please contact the Office of Admissions at 1-800-722-9933 or email Dr. Susan Rice at [email protected]. you can MAKE a DECISION TODAY to CREATE a BETTER TOMORROW for your LOVED ONES and WESLEYAN You could provide the necessary arrangements for your loved ones and create a better tomorrow for West Virginia Wesleyan College in your estate plans today. Emeritus Club Newsletter Winter 2015 Page 3 Wesleyan Continues to Counter Regional Enrollment Trends New Chaplain Finds Joy in Combining Faith, Knowledge, and Leadership Wesleyan welcomed over 450 new students this fall, pushing enrollment totals to 1,518. This is the third consecutive year that the College has countered enrollment trends in the region. Over half of Wesleyan’s new students were from West Virginia, followed by Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New Jersey, and Florida. The entering class includes students from 15 countries. The most popular majors for the new cohort of students includes nursing, biology, business, physics/engineering, and athletic training. The Class GPA average was 3.49 and 90 students graduated from high school with a perfect 4.0 GPA, while another 115 had GPA’s of 3.5-3.99. Christopher C. Scott is having the time of his life. Wesleyan’s new Chaplain and Director of Religious and Spiritual Life has hit the ground running since his arrival in Buckhannon last summer. He describes his job as “invigorating and energizing.” His aspirations include to fully develop a leadership program that can serve the church and society. “Our plan is to develop this leadership program around the Wesleyan United Methodist Scholarship,” Scott said. “We want our scholarship recipients to work with upper-class mentors who will help the students foster their leadership skills. This is a good way to strengthen our connection to The United Methodist Church.” Scott’s future plans for the UMC scholarship also include tying it together with a Freshman Seminar course with incentives to participate in a number of chapel programs. The Chapel Office will again sponsor an Alternative Spring Break program spring 2016 in Washington, D.C., a program in which the Emeritus Club has made annual gifts for many years. “Our Washington Immersion trip will help students learn how to build relationships with those who have a different culture,” added Scott. “We will partner with Jubilee Housing, a faithbased affordable housing organization. We will also volunteer at after-school programs, work with Jewish Social Services, mentor kids, and introduce Wesleyan as a possible college choice. This will help our students learn from other faith traditions and the importance of social justice.” Scott has introduced a number of new programs this fall and is providing guidance to a religious students student who started a group for those hurt by the church. Scott also took students to the Explore Calling workshop in Orlanda, FL where students from around the country joined together for leadership training and powerful worship services. Finally, Scott has encouraged students to play the leading role each week with Wesleyan’s chapel services. “Our attendance is higher when students deliver the message or lead the music,” he concluded. “This generation really wants to lead and not just sit in the pews. We are seeing an increase in attendance, and I know we have the potential for much higher growth.” 2015-2016 Emeritus Club Leadership Officers: Ronald M. Page 4 Winter 2015 Emeritus Club Newsletter Wesleyan Dedicates Beginning of Diversity Appreciation Garden West Virginia Wesleyan College has dedicated the beginning of a new Diversity Appreciation Garden on the site of the former Central School, along Baxter Street. Held during Homecoming weekend in October, the Diversity Appreciation Day recognized the legacy of Buckhannon’s black families and the campus contributions of the diverse student population at Wesleyan. Central School opened in 1926 and was designated as the black school of the community until integration. Wesleyan purchased the school at an auction in 2005. After acquiring the surrounding property, one piece remained, the McGhee property. Through negotiations with Sharon McGhee Smith and David McCauley, the college’s attorney and business professor, the college purchased the remaining property. Pictured are: l-r: David McCauley, Rodney McGhee, Mary Posey, Sharon McGhee Smith, Jimmy S. McGhee ’75, Chris McGhee ’75, Stanley T. Gilman Scholars Spend Summer Studying Abroad First Emeritus Club Endowed Scholar Travels to Namibia Wesleyan students John Bair and Taylor Germain studied abroad this summer thanks in part to the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship program. Bair, a junior double major in music and applied physics from Shady Spring, WV, studied Buddhism in Chaing Mai, Thailand for five weeks. While overseas, he also traveled around Chiang Mai and took advantage of its surrounding natural attractions. Germain, a junior English literature major and philosophy, psychology, and Honors minor from Deep Creek, MD, studied in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania for eight weeks. She took classes and served at an orphanage. The first Wesleyan student to receive the Emeritus Club Endowed Scholarship for International Travel is Aaron A. Bugby of Quinwood, WV in Greenbrier County. Aaron’s very successful study abroad in the Republic of Namibia, Africa from May 14-June 21, 2015 was an extraordinatry experience for him. Dr. John K. Saunders, Hon ’14 says this experience will certainly improve his credentials when he applies for a doctorate in the field of Biology. Aaron is a first-generation student who is a Dean’s List scholar and is very active in community service. He was a State Farm Insurance Agent for forty years in Clarksburg. He retired in 2011. His wife, Peggy, is a Clinical Phycologist in private practice. In the Fall 2015 Newsletter on page 2 is a story of Warren L. Garner ’50 who along with his wife, Shirleen Satterfield Garner ’51, gave a bequest of $500,000 to WV Wesleyan to benefit the Chemistry and Music departments. Warren grew up on the family farm in the Friars Hill Community, Greenbrier County, near Renick and Williamsburg. Now living in his home place for fifty years is Cassandra Knicely Perkins (Fred). She had pictures of both the Garners and has given them to Wesleyan. She is pictured with Harold Elmore, Hon ’82 receiving the two pictures in Greenbrier County on November 13. Patricia Wass Ploehn ’69 of Richardson, TX sent Wesleyan memorabilia that belonged to her great aunt Lucritia Olive Hamrick ’31 a teacher who lived in Charleston, WV. Carol Beers Remley ’59 wrote: “We have been in North Carolina for 32 years so this nomination and induction were quite a surprise. Ken was a fast ball pitcher. The Hall of Fame asked that two persons speak on behalf of the inductee so our sons, Kenny and Chris, did a fine job. They had attended their Dad’s games all of their young lives and played on the same team for Ken’s last two years.” Carol and Ken were in Buckhannon on Novemebr 6 and 7 for the visitation and service for Coach Franklin C. “Hank” Ellis ’43. A 1934 framed picture of the Wesleyan Faculty and Student Body was given to the Wesleyan Archives by members of the Roscoe H. Carder Family. Their mother, Mary Frances Carder Skaggs, was a sister to Emeritus Club member Jayne Carder Schumaker ’45 of Indianapolis, IN. William B. Stemple '48 of Sarasota, FL wrote: The wonderful USPS delivered the 2015 Fall Issue of the Emeritus Club Newsletter today, October 24. Just a little late to invite me to Homecoming. I think I have pretty well covered it from the picture of Agnes Howard Hall on the front to The Orange Line on the back cover. It was a most interesting issue and very pleasing to see the new members of the Emeritus Club from the Class of 1965. Thanks very much for the blurb about my great niece Kendra Stemple McLaughlin ’91 and her sons Landon ’13 and Clay ’19. I will be following Wesleyan basketball very closely this year and for three years after. It appears that Wesleyan is headed for a banner year spearheaded by a very large freshman class. I am still so proud of my Alma Mater after all these 67 years. Mary Lou McWhorter Zickefoose ’45 of Winchester, VA presented to President Balch ’71 Wesleyan football memorabilia that belonged to her father, Carlton Brooks McWhorter. Shaped like a football, this leather bound annual Football Banquet 1914 pro- Page 12 Winter 2015 News About You gram on December 7 at the New Valley Hotel. The season’s record included wins over VPI, Marshall and WVU. Mary Lou said: “the program was given to my father as a member of the football team in 1914 at the annual banquet. ( I cannot identify him in the picture because he had hair then, and I knew my father only when he was bald). He attended WVWC for only two years at that time and received a teacher’s certificate. Later he took extension classes and returned to campus for a few courses and eventually graduated in 1942. During the early years he met Goldie Harris who also received a teacher’s certificate and both taught until they were married. She did not teach as she was rearing our family. When my younger sister, Lois Ann McWhorter Cailliet, started to WVWC, my mother resumed her studies, and they graduated together in 1955. Lois Ann lives in Pacific Palisades, CA. Thank you for a memorable day on Homecoming Saturday and the Emeritus luncheon.” In September 2015, these retired UMC clergy and spouses met with Bishop William Boyd Grove, Hon ’86 for a mini retreat at Tygart Lake State Park These pastors served as District Superintendents in the WV Annual Conference with Bishop Grove.
