Exploits of Captain John Smith
Captain John Smith (c.1580-1631) was governor of the Virginia
colony from 1608 to1609. He saved the floundering venture with
his energy and decisiveness. In 1624 Smith published a Historie
of his exploits in Virginia, illustrated by this series of engravings.
They show him encountering and overcoming various perils,
including being rescued at the last minute from King Powhatan's
executioners by the monarch's daughter, Pocahontas.

Leaders & Statesmen Pocahontas
Pocahontas Meets the English
Pocahontas got to know and make friends with the
new colonists. Her warm nature and natural curiosity
led the English to like and trust her, as well. One of
the colonists, Captain John Smith, said that her
appearance, intelligence, and friendly personality
"much exceedeth any of the rest of Powhatan's
people." But not all of Powhatan's people were so
curious and friendly. In December 1607, Captain
Smith was captured and held at Chief Powhatan's
capital, Werowocomoco.

Living in a New World
Her father refused to pay the ransom, and
Pocahontas was held hostage by the English for a
year. But the Indian princess was well liked and
respected by her captors, and she was well treated.
During that time, the colonists convinced her to
convert to Christianity, and she was baptized with
the name "Rebecca." In April 1614, Pocahontas
married colonist John Rolfe. The marriage helped
end the war between the Powhatans and the
settlers. She was a symbol of peace and union
between the two races. The English also hoped that
her conversion to Christianity would help persuade
all her people to do the same. Do you know what

A Child Keeps the Peace Between Nations
In 1608, Pocahontas helped negotiate the return of
Powhatan prisoners held by the colonists.
Pocahontas was only about 12 years old when she
did this! During the next two years, she continued to
come between her father, Chief Powhatan, and
members of her tribe in protecting the colonists. But
despite her best efforts, tensions between the
Powhatans and the English grew, as Powhatan's
warriors grew furious over the English taking their
land. Finally, war broke out among the two peoples,
in a conflict that would last for five years.
