BUILDING WITH
Dear Equipment User:
The economic stimulus package that the President signed into law can have a significant
impact on your business this year. The law states that companies buying new equipment in 2008
can depreciate an additional 50 percent of the cost in this year. If you elect to use it, the bonus
depreciation can lower your 2008 tax bill. There are other benefits of the stimulus package, and
you can get more detailed information in the Guest Opinion article in this issue of Building With
Binder.
In this issue, we are proud to salute Joseph M. Sanzari as the company celebrates its 40th year
in business. The Hackensack company is one of the leading heavy/highway contracting firms in
northern New Jersey. Along with its joint venture, Creamer-Sanzari, the companies have completed
numerous high-profile jobs with the help of their extensive lineup of Komatsu machines.
Also in this issue, we salute the third-generation family business, Dan Como & Sons. This
year, the Towaco-based company celebrates its 50th anniversary of providing quality garden
and landscape supplies. Second-generation owners Dan Jr. and his brother, Mike, grew up in the
business, which is now the oldest and largest supplier of topsoil in its area. We’re proud to work
with this family business that has such a rich tradition.
Keeping with our theme of milestone anniversaries, you can read about the award Binder
Machinery received from New Jersey’s Equipment Management Council of America (EMCA) for
50 years of service. We are very proud of the honor and appreciate working with this outstanding
group.
Part of EMCA’s focus is on service, something we take very seriously at Binder. Find out how
we work with customers such as Redy Mixt Konkrete to keep its Komatsu WA320-3 wheel loader
up and running. Redy Mixt Konkrete Operator Kenny Eachus credits Binder’s service for helping
the machine go beyond 16,000 hours without major issues.
At Binder Machinery, we stand ready to make all our customers’ owning and operating costs
as minimal as possible, and we’ll be happy to work with you in any way we can to make that
happen.

JOSEPH M. SANZARI, INC.
Beating schedules is routine for this respected Hackensack contracting firm
J
Joseph M. Sanzari, Inc. is one of the leading
heavy/highway contracting firms in northern
New Jersey. Since its founding in 1968, the
company has been involved in many of
the signature road and bridge projects in
the New York/New Jersey region. These
include numerous jobs on the New Jersey
Turnpike and many others in and around
Giants Stadium and the Sports Complex at the
Meadowlands in East Rutherford.
Joe Sanzari,
President
Large, complex, fast-track,
transportation-related jobs are a specialty of
Hackensack-based Joseph M. Sanzari, Inc. and
its joint venture, Creamer-Sanzari.

Joseph M. Sanzari
crews are capping the
Overpeck Landfill
using a fleet of Komatsu
equipment, including
this Komatsu PC600LC-7
excavator and HM300
articulated truck.
“We have about 200 employees and about 200
pieces of mobile equipment,” said President Joe
Sanzari. “We’re able to do good-size jobs on our
own. When we combine forces with J. Fletcher
Creamer in our joint venture, Creamer-Sanzari,
we’re probably the largest locally owned
contracting company in the state, and we’re
really able to make things happen.
“Together, we have the resources and the
commitment to properly gear up for a big
job, then attack it,” Sanzari explained. “If that
means working 24 hours a day, we work 24
hours a day. We do whatever it takes to get the
job done for our customer. On every job, our
goal is to not only beat the project schedule,
but beat it by a lot.”
As an example, Sanzari points to a current
Creamer-Sanzari joint venture replacing the
Essex Street bridge over Route 17 in Hackensack.
“We started in late August of 2007. It was not
scheduled for completion until 2010, but we
expect to have the bridge open to the public by
October of this year, 2008. In other words, it’s a
job that was expected to take about 30 months,
but we’re going to complete it in 14 months.
That’s the type of fast-track work we try to do
routinely for our customers.”
Large jobs underway
The Essex Street bridge is just one such
mega-project that Joseph M. Sanzari, Inc. is
currently building. Others include:
•Overpeck Park, which consists of covering
the former Overpeck Landfill in order to
turn the 600-acre property into a showcase
park, which will house baseball and soccer
fields, basketball and tennis courts, picnic
areas, jogging trails, a boat launch and an
amphitheater.
4
Replacing the Essex Street bridge over Route 17 in Hackensack is typical of the large, fast-track projects Joseph M. Sanzari, Inc. undertakes. The
company relied heavily on its fleet of Komatsu excavators, for both demolition and construction. “Komatsu is our equipment of choice,” said
President Joe Sanzari. “It’s productive, reliable and lasts a long time.”
•Xanadu, which is slated to be the largest
sports, retail and entertainment complex in
the U.S. and the third largest in the world.
It’s going in near Giants Stadium in the
Meadowlands and will include the first indoor
ski resort in the U.S., as well as the world’s
largest Ferris wheel, which will provide
spectacular views of New York City.
•Creamer-Sanzari Railroad, a tri-venture that’s
building the rail service that will bring people to
the new Meadowlands Sports Complex.
A “hands-on” owner
While Sanzari relies on talented and
experienced superintendents, managers and
other personnel throughout the company to
help organize and run such high-profile jobs,
he himself is personally involved in overseeing
activities.
“I’m a ‘hands-on’ owner,” he admits. “One of
my early memories is riding in a pickup with
my dad, who was a construction laborer. I grew
up in this business as a laborer and operator —
not as an office guy. I got my first union card at
age 16, which, to my knowledge, made me the
youngest-ever member of Laborers Local 472. I
started my first business with a single backhoe
and a dump truck. So, although I’ve met
movers and shakers from presidents to popes,
I’m most at home out on the job — and that’s
usually where you’ll find me.”
Today, Joseph M. Sanzari, Inc. can do a job as
large as $150 million, but will also still do one
for as little as $50,000.
“What I love about construction is the
problem-solving aspect of it,” said Sanzari.
“Challenges arise on every job, no matter how
large or how small. It’s how you overcome
those challenges that defines your ability as a
contractor. I believe our ability to solve those
issues in a timely and cost-effective manner is
one of our greatest strengths as a company.”

Street bridge project in

North Bergen companies
In addition to the heavy highway firm of
Joseph M. Sanzari, Inc., Sanzari also has a
number of other construction-related business
interests including North Bergen Recycling,
North Bergen Rock Products and North
Bergen Asphalt Products.
North Bergen Recycling, which Sanzari
started in 1992, accepts concrete and asphalt,
which it crushes to make road-base products.
North Bergen Rock Products, a quarry
operation, was started in 2006. In 2007, Sanzari
opened North Bergen Asphalt Products with
partner Ralph Serpe.
“We sell our rock products and asphalt to
outside contractors, but the main reason I wanted
to be involved in those material-type companies
was to be able to adequately supply ourselves on
our own projects,” explained Sanzari.
“We’re an aggressive company and we’ve
made our name by doing whatever we have to
do to meet deadlines,” he continued. “If that
means working 24/7, then we work 24/7 —
and we do that for however long we need to.
Occasionally, we would run into problems with
suppliers who didn’t share our commitment to
working those long hours. Now, because we’re
our own supplier, we don’t have to rely on
anybody else. We can get materials whenever
we need to, and we can blacktop whenever we
want to — day or night.”
In addition to family members, key
people at Joseph M. Sanzari, Inc. include
Chief Operating Officer Paul Sarlo, CFO Sy
Ghassemi, Project Manager George DaSilva,
Project Engineer Geoff Wolfer, Equipment
Superintendent Bob Brown and Project
Manager Joe Varance. Jim Finn is Project
Manager of the Xanadu work. George Kries is
Operations Manager for Creamer-Sanzari.
Paul Sarlo,
COO
“Many of our managers, superintendents
and operators have been with me a long time
and they’re like extended family,” said Sanzari.
“They definitely bring a lot of experience and
expertise to our company.”
Productive equipment
In order to do the fast-paced work that the
company is known for, Joseph M. Sanzari, Inc.
and the North Bergen companies owned by
Sanzari use a large fleet of Komatsu equipment
from Binder Machinery Company.

Through the years, Sanzari has owned more
than one hundred Komatsu units and most are
still in the fleet. Sanzari’s Komatsu excavators

and include numerous tight-tail-swing models
(PC138, PC228 and PC308). The company’s

Along with the North Bergen asphalt facility,
Sanzari and partner Ralph Serpe will also soon
be opening a second asphalt plant in Newark.
Sanzari’s widespread construction
interests also include a crane-rental business,
Sanzari-Shinn, that he owns with Tim Shinn.
Family business
Just as Joe learned to love the industry
from his father, his children are also heavily
involved in the family business. His daughter
and son-in-law, Tina and Tim Murray, run the
North Bergen companies. His daughter Joann
Dellechie is Operations Manager of Joseph
M. Sanzari, Inc. His son, Joe, is in college,
but works as an operator on weekends and
summers, and will join the business full-time
upon graduation.

Komatsu wheel loader fleet encompasses nearly
every model between a WA75 and a WA500-6.
Sanzari also has 20 WB140 backhoe loaders.
“Komatsu is our equipment of choice,” said
Sanzari. “It’s productive, reliable equipment that
lasts a long time. That’s important to me because
we never trade our machines in. My philosophy
is that it’s most cost-effective to buy a machine,
then run it until it doesn’t have anything more to
give. We’ve been very successful using Komatsu
machines in that manner. They’re well-built, so
they don’t eat us up in repair costs, and typically
they remain very productive for us years after
the last payment has been made.”
In addition to preferring Komatsu equipment,
Sanzari also appreciates his longtime
relationship with Binder Machinery Company.

“Kirk Chagnon (VP of Sales, North Jersey)
does an excellent job for us. We’ve dealt with
Bob Binder and everybody at Binder Machinery
practically from the beginning of our company.
I’d say they’re good friends as well as good
business partners. We know if we have any type
of issue, we can call the appropriate person at
Binder and we’re going to get it resolved.”
Making the community better
In addition to his love of construction,
Sanzari is also extraordinarily active in the
community throughout northern New Jersey.
He provided significant funding for the
Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital and the
Donna A. Sanzari Women’s Hospital at the
Hackensack University Medical Center. He
also serves as Chairman of the Bergen County
Economic Development Corporation.
Joe Sanzari also owns North Bergen Recycling, a facility that takes in concrete and asphalt
and crushes it to make road-base products.
Sanzari opened North Bergen Asphalt Products in 2007 with partner Ralph Serpe.
“Because we’re our own supplier, we don’t have to rely on anybody else,” noted Joe
Sanzari. “We can blacktop whenever want to — day or night.”
8
“I think we all have an obligation to do what
we can to make our communities better places
in which to live,” said Sanzari. “Probably my
proudest accomplishment was starting this
business that’s employed hundreds of people
over the years and provided a good living for
them and their families.
“I consider myself very fortunate because I
love what I’m doing — and it’s all I ever wanted
to do. I can’t imagine that I’ll ever retire. I get too
much enjoyment out of planning and executing
a difficult project, and seeing the finished
product. I’m very proud that we’re a ‘can-do’
company. We’re always looking for ways to
make a job happen, as opposed to coming up
with excuses as to why it couldn’t be done. I
firmly believe that with a positive attitude and
the right planning and resources, a person can
do just about anything.” ■

DAN COMO & SONS, INC.
Family business celebrates 50 years of
providing quality products and service
S
Since 1958, the Como family has believed
two things ensure Dan Como & Sons, Inc.
will continue to thrive: service and quality
products. As the garden and landscape supply
company sees its third generation working the
business, it’s assured that focusing on those
two things has proven successful.
“The two go hand-in-hand. We’ve spent
a lot of time making products that fit our
customers’ specifications and expectations,”
said second-generation Co-owner Dan Como
Jr. of the Towaco-based company. “We focus
on consistency in everything we do. When a
customer gets a product one day and comes
back for more the next day, he expects it to be
the same quality. That’s part of our commitment
to customer service. My father, Dan Como
Sr., taught us very early on that producing
consistent-quality products and having great
customer service is the key to having a successful
business.”
Dan Jr. and his brother, Mike, have been
involved with the company since they were
very young. The two drove machinery and
helped their dad and mom, Joyce, before
eventually taking over the company in the
1980s. Mike handles product development,
while Dan takes charge of sales. Their children
have followed in the tradition and help run
the family business. Dan’s son, Dan III, and
daughter, Kimberly Camoia, along with Mike’s
son, Mike Jr., and daughter, Ginger, are also
part of the 11-member team and contribute
much to the company’s success.
product is still a large part of Dan Como & Sons’
business. It’s since added two types of compost,
and in 1978 began offering mulch at its 17-acre
facility, which was originally Dan Como Sr.’s
farm before he converted it into the business.
“We were the only mulch dealers in the area
at the time,” Dan Jr said. “Hardly anyone even
knew what mulch was then, but it quickly
caught on and became very popular in the area.
For several years, we brought all our mulch in
from the mills and other suppliers. Now, we’re
making nearly all our own mulches with our
own grinders. People bring us materials such
as trees, wood chips and shrubs. We then turn
them into our own mulch.”
Early on, Dan Como & Sons’ mulch selection
was limited. Today, the company makes a
wide variety, including single-, double- and
triple-ground. The company also has a dye
machine, which allows it to make red, black,
brown and gold mulch. The facility also makes
soft wood mulches used for play areas and
playgrounds.

Increased product offerings

Unilock and E.P. Henry dealers. Last year, Dan
Como & Sons added a small concrete plant
and concrete delivery truck.
“Adding products has been due in part to our
customers’ needs, as well as a way to expand our
market,” said Dan Jr. “We also have any amount
they need. For instance, we sell mulch in bulk
and we also carry it in bags. This year, we’re
going to start bagging topsoil as well. In addition,
we’re adding concrete to our list. Sometimes a
homeowner or contractor only needs a small
amount of concrete, a yard or two, and that’s the
market we plan to serve. It’s all a way to give
customers a choice of what they want.”

bulk materials, it’s likely they’ll be loaded by
one of the company’s three Komatsu wheel
loaders. The Comos’ most recent acquisition is
a WA430-6, which they added to two Komatsu
WA450-5 loaders purchased from Binder
Machinery. Dan Como & Sons also demo’d a
PC400LC-8 excavator recently.
“We were longtime users of a competitive
brand, but our Sales Representative, Rob Fornini,
convinced us to demo a Komatsu wheel loader,”
recalled Dan Jr. “We tried it out for a few days,
and called Rob back to say we’d take it. Komatsu
has been our loader of choice since. Our belief in
quality products extends to our machinery, and
Komatsu has the best on the market.”
Como explained that Komatsu has an
extensive list of features that set it apart from
the competition, including better fuel economy.
“That’s been a huge benefit, especially with fuel
prices as high as they are. We’ve seen a significant
difference since using the Komatsu loaders, and
it’s been even better with the new WA430-6. It
uses less fuel, but still has all the power we expect
from Komatsu loaders. We also like its traction
control as well. We can dig into a pile without the
tires slipping, which helps our tires last longer. All
around, it has been lowering our operating costs
significantly.”
Como said he appreciates Binder Machinery’s
reliable service as well. “Binder has taken very
good care of us. Rob stops in often to check on
us and our Product Support Representative,
Rudy Martinez, is very good about letting
us know when he’ll be in the area, checking
to see if we need him to bring anything. Our
mechanics often comment about how good
Binder’s parts and service people are.”
Building on the foundation
The Comos expect to continue offering the
same great service they have always given
their customers. Adding concrete is one way
they’re doing that.
“As always, it depends on our customers’
wishes,” Como said. “If there’s something
further we can do, we’ll do our best to help
them. We’re very pleased with what we’ve
built here. We’ve given the next generation a
solid foundation to work with, and Mike and I
believe that they’ll continue building on it.” n

C&M METALS RECYCLING
Subsidiary of Donjon Marine Co. grows scrap business by
personal customer relationships and better facility efficiency
T
The scrap-recycling industry was once
viewed as a rough-and-tumble, buyer-beware
type of business. That over-generalized
stereotype has changed in recent years as
scrap-recycling operations have become
more precise and professional. Now, New
Jersey-based C&M Metals Recycling wants to
take that improved image to the next level.
“Scrap recycling improves the environment
by reducing the amount of material going
to landfills and reducing the amount of
raw material that must be taken out of the
earth, so we definitely believe what we do
is important,” said James Witte, who runs
C&M, as well as the iron and metals division
of C&M’s parent company Donjon Marine.
“Nonetheless, we’re often viewed as unsavory
characters. At C&M Metals Recycling, we want
to change that perception. Our goal is to earn
a customer’s business, not just by providing
the best price — but also by being nice. That
means being courteous and professional, and

Witte says by providing such exceptional

Island-based Donjon Iron and Metal will be able
to grow their business “one customer at a time.”
“In addition to handling scrap, we also
sometimes use the SENNEBOGEN 830 as a
material processor,” Witte added. “For example,
we sometimes take in large metal units, such as
aluminum office trailers. In the past, we would
have had to torch such pieces and it might take
weeks to complete. With the SENNEBOGEN
830, I personally watched one of our talented
operators rip such an object apart and segregate
the scrap in one hour. It was incredible.”

Witte says with that type of productivity and
versatility, the SENNEBOGEN 830 has helped
C&M more than double its monthly tonnage

OPINION
DEPRECIATION BONUS
Congress and the President have prescribed
powerful medicine to stimulate the U.S. economy
O
On February 13, President Bush signed the
Economic Stimulus Act (ESA). In addition to
providing tax rebate checks to middle-income
families and making it easier to refinance
mortgages, the ESA temporarily reinstates
the depreciation bonus and increases Sec. 179
expensing limits. The goal: encourage business
purchasing.
Under the new law, companies that buy
equipment (and other eligible property) in
2008 can depreciate an additional 50 percent
of the cost in the year. To be eligible for bonus
depreciation, the equipment must be new and
placed in service before January 1, 2009. The
depreciation bonus is elective (you do not
have to use it) and applies for both regular and
alternative minimum tax purposes.
The ESA also significantly boosts Sec.
179 expensing limits for 2008. Companies
can now expense up to $250,000 as long as
total purchasing does not exceed $800,000.
For each dollar over, the eligible expensing
amount correspondingly drops by one dollar.
Companies that spend more than $1,050,000
on tangible personal property cannot take
advantage of Sec. 179 (but can still use the
depreciation bonus). Unlike the depreciation
bonus, Sec. 179 expensing can be applied to
both new and used equipment. Companies
eligible for Sec. 179 can also combine it with
the depreciation bonus for even bigger tax
savings.
less you will be able to depreciate later. In
other words, your tax bill in future years will
be slightly higher because you have less to
deduct.
If history is any guide, the temporary
capital investment incentives will boost
equipment purchasing in the months ahead
as savvy companies take advantage of the
law to buy newer, more efficient, and more
environmentally friendly equipment. Check
with your tax professional to learn about
making Sec. 179 and the depreciation bonus
work for you. ■

The Economic Stimulus Act provides for temporary bonus depreciation on new

Trimming this year’s tax bill
By lowering your taxable income, the
depreciation bonus and Sec. 179 can
dramatically cut your 2008 tax bill, thereby
freeing up cash in the near term. But there is

NEW SMALL WHEEL LOADERS
Variable traction control system gives
Dash-6 models firmer footing
I
Improving on what was already a good thing
is never easy, but Mike Gidaspow, Komatsu
Product Marketing Manager for Wheel Loaders,
says Komatsu did it with the launch of its new
Dash-6 models of the WA200, WA250 and WA320
wheel loaders. The main reason: they now offer
the advantage of variable traction control.
Variable traction control allows operators
to fine-tune the machine to match ground
conditions. The traction control switch
reduces the tractive effort of the machine
when traveling at low speed. Combined with
torque proportioning differentials, or optional
limited-slip differentials, the variable traction
control provides several benefits.
“The WA200, WA250 and WA320 have
long been trusted, versatile machines in road
work, utility, agricultural and a host of other
applications,” noted Gidaspow. “With the
enhancements we’ve made, such as variable
traction control and Tier 3 engines, users are
going to find them to be even more effective
and productive.”
Each loader has three variable traction
control modes (A, B and C) that offer different
levels of traction control. The A mode allows
for 75 percent tractive effort, B provides 65
percent and C offers approximately 55 percent.
“Komatsu’s hydrostatic loaders have always
had a great deal of pushing power, and these
are no different,” Gidaspow added. “Usually,
that’s good, but sometimes it can be too much
power. In those instances, the tires tend to
spin, so the power isn’t going to the ground.
With the variable traction control, the operator
can reduce the pushing power and the spin.
Reducing tire slippage will extend tire life, and
with tire prices climbing, that will make a big
difference in the bottom line.”

Komatsu’s new small wheel loaders have variable traction control, which allows
operators to fine-tune the machine to match ground conditions. Each loader has three
variable traction control modes that offer different levels of traction control from 75
percent to 55 percent tractive effort.
“The previous models had only one level of
traction control, which was basically on or off.
With the new WA200-6, WA250-6 and WA320-6,
users get three,” noted Gidaspow, who added
that parallel tool carrier versions will be coming
very soon. “The variable traction control offers an
advantage when operating on soft ground where
the tires are apt to slip. It eliminates excessive
bucket penetration and reduces tire slippage
during stockpile loading to improve the work
efficiency.
23
New features offer efficiency, operator comfort
. . . continued
slippery road surfaces. “Many contractors
also do snow removal in the winter, and the
S-mode is well-suited for those conditions,” said
Gidaspow. “It changes the tractive effort curve to
reduce slipping when traveling at a low speed.”
A Max. traction switch is also standard and
is located on the work equipment control lever,
so it’s easy for the operator to turn it on or
off. When the traction control is on or S-mode
is selected, pushing the Max. traction switch
cancels the setting of the traction control
temporarily and increases the tractive effort
to full. Pushing the switch or changing from
forward to reverse again automatically returns
the tractive effort to its set value. That’s useful
for operations such as stockpile work, which
requires temporary, large tractive effort.
Like Komatsu’s other Dash-6 models (WA380
through WA480), the new WA200, WA250 and
WA320 are powered by ecot3, Tier 3-compliant,
turbocharged engines that reduce emissions
without reducing power or fuel efficiency. Each
model got a boost in horsepower and operating
weight that helps increase tipping loads
compared to its predecessor.
Also new is a hydraulically driven,
auto-reversible fan. When the switch is in
the automatic position, the fan intermittently
revolves in reverse for two minutes every two
Komatsu added its ecot3, Tier 3-compliant turbocharged engines to the new WA200-6,
WA250-6 and WA320-6 wheel loaders for better fuel efficiency with lower emissions.
hours and can be easily reprogrammed for
other cycles.
“The auto reverse fan works great in
high-debris applications by keeping the
radiator cleaner and reducing the amount of
time the operator has to spend outside the
machine cleaning it out,” Gidaspow said. “It
works automatically, but the operator can
also manually reverse the fan if he feels it is
necessary, depending on conditions.”
An outstanding choice
Less time cleaning the radiator means
more time in the cab, which is larger and
more operator-friendly. Komatsu moved the
air-conditioning system from the back to the
front to allow more space for seat adjustment.
An electronically controlled directional lever
lets the operator change direction with the
touch of a finger, without removing his hand
from the steering wheel, which is on a tiltable
steering column. A multifunction control lever,
integrated with a forward and reverse switch,
allows easy operation to reduce fatigue and
increase controllability. An adjustable wrist
rest is standard, as is a right-side control panel
where the operator can control the speed range,
maximum travel speed in first gear, tractive
effort and reversible fan. Wide, pillarless, flat
glass provides excellent front visibility.
The improved Equipment Management
Monitoring System (EMMS) is mounted in
front of the operator for easy viewing, so he
can check gauges, warning lights and feature
functions, such as action-code displays and
replacement-time notices.
“Also standard is KOMTRAX, Komatsu’s
remote monitoring system which can send
location and other valuable information
about the machine to a secure Web site,
where Komatsu and its distributors can track
error codes and schedule maintenance,”
said Gidaspow. “Komatsu offers five years
of free service, which is unprecedented in
the industry. It’s just another advantage that
Komatsu offers on these new machines.
Along with all the other features the WA200-6,
WA250-6 and WA320-6 have to offer, they are
outstanding choices for anyone who uses these
size classes of wheel loaders.” n

THE NEW BR580JG-1
Komatsu’s mobile jaw crusher offers greater production to crushing and recycling operations
A
As more projects call for the recycling and
reuse of existing materials, mobile crushers have
become increasingly in demand. So has the need
to crush more material faster, a task handled by
Komatsu’s new BR580JG-1, the largest in the
Komatsu lineup of mobile crushers.
The BR580JG-1 (replacing the BR550JG)
is powered by a fuel-efficient, water-cooled
345-horsepower Tier 3 engine that’s
suitable for a variety of applications,
including quarry, demolition, and highway
construction where old pavement is crushed
to make base material. An electronically
controlled common-rail fuel-injection system
is EPA Tier 3-certified and provides low-noise
operation that’s fuel-efficient, powerful and
productive.
“These are on-site crushers designed to save the
customer hauling, fuel and dumping costs,” said
Mike Vigil, Product Manager, Mobile Crushers.
“The savings are potentially enormous; therefore,
this segment of the market is growing rapidly.
Komatsu designed the BR580JG to help users be
more productive and efficient in their operations,
not only by producing significant tonnage per
hour, but through ease of setup and maintenance.
It’s mobile, so it can be up and running in a
matter of minutes and adjusted quickly and
easily to switch among materials.”

minimize dust.
Komatsu’s BR580JG-1 has several special
features, including the patented HydrauMind™
fully hydraulic drive system that delivers the
right amount of oil through load-sensing and
pressure-compensated valves, sensing overloads
and automatically slowing the feeder down.
“We worked with crusher users to design
the BR580JG-1 to not only be the largest in
its size class, but to be the most efficient and
cost-effective machine for their operations,”
said Vigil. “We believe this machine will be a
powerful tool in the crushing and recycling
industries and is a perfect complement for
operations that want to add those services to
their lists of capabilities.” n

WHEELS OR TRACKS?
What to consider before you buy a compact track
or skid steer loader
I
In the last five years, the market demand
for Compact Track Loaders (CTL) has more
than doubled in size, speaking volumes for the
capability and versatility of these rubber-track
machines. Because of this surge in sales, many
in our industry speculated that the track
machines would completely replace rubber-tire
skid steer loaders (SSL). After gaining
experience with both types of machines,
owners and manufacturers have learned that
each machine (SSL or CTL) has its place.
Wheels or tracks?
The skid steer loader is very agile and quick,
making tight and spin turns easily. It operates
well on solid or relatively dry soils and on hard
and abrasive surfaces. Tires are considered a
maintenance item and can be economically and
quickly replaced when worn.
Compact rubber-track loaders excel not
only on dirt, but in less-than-ideal traction
conditions. The CTL can work effectively in
wet, muddy and soft soil or where wheels
can’t go. The key to their success is the added
flotation provided by the large surface area of
the tracks riding over the ground. The long and
wide track surface also allows CTLs to work on
slopes where a wheeled machine would tip.
Compact track loaders are not as well-suited
as skid steer loaders to applications that require
tight turns (spin turns) or on abrasive surfaces.
Although they will work effectively on abrasive
surfaces, track wear will accelerate and new
tracks cost about four times more than new tires.
“The best suggestion we can make to
prospective purchasers is to clearly understand
the strengths of the SSL versus the CTL, and have
a clear picture of the machine’s intended work
environment before deciding which machine
will be best suited for those purposes,” said Bob
Beesley, Komatsu Product Manager. n
Both compact track loaders (CTL) and rubber-tire skid steers (SSL) offer numerous
advantages to help make your business efficient and productive. Use the chart below

& YOU
“A GREAT TIME TO BE PRESIDENT”
Komatsu America Corp.’s new President views
current construction economy as an opportunity
Q
QUESTION: You became President of Komatsu
America Corp. in April of 2007. Is this a good
time to be President of Komatsu America?
ANSWER: Clearly, it’s a more challenging
market than we’ve seen for the last three or
four years, primarily because of the housing
slowdown. Exactly how challenging remains
to be seen. We’re predicting that overall
construction equipment sales in North America
in 2008 will be decreasing from 2007. Due to
substantial growth for Komatsu in Asia, in
particular in China, that means North American
sales will account for about 20 percent of
Komatsu Ltd.’s total sales, whereas in recent
years, it was about 30 percent.
That said, I think it’s a great time to be President
of Komatsu America. Any manufacturer can sell
equipment when demand is booming. But in a
somewhat tighter market, you need to be a cut
above. I believe Komatsu and its distributors
are a cut above, and our present economic
environment presents an excellent opportunity to
prove that to our customers.
QUESTION: In your opinion, what makes
Komatsu “a cut above” its competition?
ANSWER: Quality and reliability are the
keys to everything we do as a manufacturer.
Our mission is to supply high-performance
and high-quality products and services to
our customers. We believe we have the most
productive and most efficient machines in
the world. Our effort now is to improve our
customer relationships. Of course, we have
always tried to work with our customers
to meet their needs, but this is a renewed
point-of-emphasis for us this year.
QUESTION: How do you go about
improving relationships with customers?
This is one of a series
of articles based on
interviews with key people
at Komatsu discussing the
company’s commitment
to its customers in the
construction and mining
industries — and their
visions for the future.
Hisashi “Jim” Shinozuka,
President/COO,
Komatsu America Corp.
In April 2007, Hisashi “Jim” Shinozuka was appointed
President and Chief Operating Officer of Komatsu America Corp.
Born and raised in Osaka, Japan, Jim earned a law degree from
Waseda University in Tokyo. Upon graduation in 1978, he joined
Komatsu, starting in production control at the Oyama factory
where Komatsu engines are made.
Since that initial job, Jim has held many positions, with
numerous postings around the world, including stops in Mexico,
Istanbul and Miami. Immediately prior to becoming President of
Komatsu America, Jim served as General Manager, Americas and
European Business Division at Komatsu Ltd. global headquarters
in Tokyo.
Upon accepting the position of Komatsu America President,
Jim and his wife, Hiroko, moved to Chicago, home to Komatsu’s
North American headquarters. The Shinozukas have two
children, a married daughter and a son who’s attending
university in Japan.
“I’m pleased and excited to be a part of Komatsu America
Corp.,” said Jim. “Chairman Dave Grzelak and I work together
as a team to set policy, implement strategy and to constantly
monitor the construction equipment industry and our place in it.
It’s my job to see that Komatsu America is always moving in the
right direction, and that we’re taking the necessary steps that will
allow us to best serve our employees, our distributors, and most
of all, our customers.”

KOMTRAX gives Komatsu the industry edge
. . . continued
ANSWER: We believe our KOMTRAX
machine-monitoring system is tremendously
beneficial for our customers and will go a long
way toward cementing a relationship. The
KOMTRAX system provides the customer with
information, including location, service-meter
readings and fuel efficiency reports. With the
customer’s approval, his Komatsu distributor
also has access to the information and can use it
to take care of basic maintenance services, track
machine performance and offer advice regarding
possible repairs or component replacements that
will save money, lessen downtime and improve
performance over the long term.
With KOMTRAX, Komatsu, our distributors
and our customers are working together as
With the KOMTRAX
machine-monitoring system,
which is installed on virtually
all Tier 3 Komatsu machines,
contractors can track their
equipment’s performance from
a laptop or office computer.
Komatsu America Corp. President Jim Shinozuka believes Komatsu’s current product lineup
is “the best it’s ever been,” and says the company’s target is to have two-thirds of its products be
“unique and unrivaled.”
a team to improve machine performance,
productivity and owning and operating
costs. We see it as a win-win-win relationship
that improves communication and benefits
everybody.
QUESTION: Don’t most manufacturers have
a similar machine-monitoring system?
ANSWER: Many do offer such a system, but
there are big differences between their systems
and ours. For example, KOMTRAX is standard,
factory-installed equipment on virtually all new
Tier 3 machines. It’s not just offered as an add-on
from the dealer. That’s because Komatsu doesn’t
view KOMTRAX as a commercial product to sell,
but rather as a tool that enhances communications
among the customer, distributor and Komatsu.
As a result, Komatsu can offer a better
fleet-management opportunity to our customers.
With KOMTRAX, customers can expect higher
productivity and lower cost per ton.
QUESTION: Other than KOMTRAX, what
differentiates Komatsu equipment from the
competition?
ANSWER: We commit substantial spending
on research and development (R&D) to
ensure that we remain an industry leader, in
particular regarding technologies that make
our machines more productive and more
efficient. This R&D commitment enables us to
continually release new and updated products.
We believe right now our product lineup is
the best in our history and we also think it’s
the best available. Our target during the next
year or two is to have two-thirds of our product
lineup be clearly and demonstrably superior to
any competitive machine. The Japanese word
for such equipment is “Dantotsu,” which means
it’s unique and unrivaled.
QUESTION: Komatsu sometimes refers to
itself as a “total solution provider.” What
does that mean?
ANSWER: It means we cover all the bases
for our customers. We offer all types of
machines and all sizes, from the smallest to the
largest. It means that, in conjunction with our
distributors, we’re able to provide the parts
and service support to keep that equipment up
and running. And most of all, it means we’re
committed to helping our customers succeed,
in any way we can. n

for the mining industry and features a capacity
of 1,300 tons of castings per month.
Ralph Huebner, Hensley’s Executive Vice
President for Sales and Marketing said there were
two primary reasons the plant was needed. “Our
products have gained worldwide acceptance, and
with the explosion in the construction and mining
industries in the past few years, this new foundry
allows us to expand capacity and bring product
to the market quickly.”
With nearly 2,000 products, Hensley Industries
has long been a leader in the manufacture of
ground-engaging tools for earthmoving and
mining equipment, including the KMAX tooth
system, which features a reusable locking
mechanism for quick installation and removal.
Hensley also has an attachment division that
produces such products as buckets.
“This plant sets up Hensley as a major
supplier of mining castings for Komatsu, and
offers consistent high-quality supplies with
efficiencies for cost control to keep the plant
viable for a long time,” noted Paul Rudd,
General Manager-Manufacturing for Hensley,
who helped design the new foundry.
“We’re very proud of what we
accomplished. We set out to build a very
modern facility that was environmentally
friendly and an asset to our neighbors. We’ve
done that by investing in such items as a
dust-collection system and noise suppression.
We also recycle nearly 100 percent of the waste
products produced during the manufacturing
process.
It’s truly state-of-the-art.”
Kunio Noji, President of Komatsu Ltd.,
addressed the crowd and helped cut the
ribbon, which was held by several local
schoolchildren at the 40,000-square-foot
facility. Komatsu America President Jim
Shinozuka and Komatsu Ltd. President
Customer Support Mamoru Hironaka also
were among the more than 200 people
attending the event.
During his address, Komatsu Ltd. President
Noji noted the reasons for the company’s
investment in the plant. “There were three
reasons we chose to partner with Hensley to
promote the growth of our companies,” Noji
said, “First, the people of Dallas are friendly
and warm. Second, the people working in the
Hensley factory have a high level of skill. Finally,
Hensley has the ability to quickly respond to
customer requirements, including development
and design work. It has a history of quality
products and service.” n

IMPROVING AVAILABILITY
Komatsu speeds parts orders with
the completion of eight regional depots
K
Komatsu, long an industry leader in
parts availability, further strengthened its
commitment to keeping owners’ downtime
to a minimum with the completion of eight
regional parts depots. Located throughout
the United States and Canada, the depots are
designed to expedite parts orders.
Frank Pagura,
VP of North American
Parts Operations
The newest depot recently opened in
Savannah, Ga. It joins a list that includes
Pittsburgh, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Denver
and Portland in the U.S., and Vancouver and
Toronto in Canada. In addition, Komatsu has
a master parts distribution center in Ripley,
Tenn.
“These regional parts depots combine
to significantly increase our available
warehouse space and improve our overall
parts availability,” said Frank Pagura, Vice
President, North American Parts Operations.
“They’re strategically located so we can deliver
Komatsu regional parts depots, like this one in Las Vegas, are strategically located to deliver
parts to the distributor quickly and effectively.
parts to the distributor quickly and effectively.
Our distributors already have a vast inventory
of parts on hand, and these regional depots are
one way to augment that.”
The regional parts depots are part of a
comprehensive three-tier approach to parts
fulfillment:
•Komatsu will work closely with its
distributors to monitor and improve local
parts stocking and availability of “on-the-shelf
inventory” at distributor locations. This will
ensure Komatsu and its distributors optimize
their “common parts” inventory to best meet
customer needs.
•The eight regional parts depots add
another layer of support to the parts network
with dedicated and continuous nightly
trucking routes between Komatsu’s master
parts distribution center, the regional parts
depots and distributor locations.
•Komatsu has improved the customer
service, technical assistance and response
teams as well as increased the inventory
levels and parts availability at its master parts
distribution center. This facility has 584,000
square feet of inventory space, operates 24
hours a day Monday through Friday (7 a.m.
to 3 p.m. on Saturday), with call-in service
available during all other hours and holidays.
Customers always have 24-hour access to parts
books and ordering at Komatsu’s parts Web
site, www.epartscentral.com
“The regional parts depots are definitely a
milestone, but it goes a lot deeper than that,” said
Pagura. “This is the culmination of planning and
restructuring to improve and strengthen our total
parts availability and distributor and customer
support at all levels.” ■

REDY
MIXT KONKRETE
Binder Machinery service helps concrete supplier
keep WA320-3 running smoothly
K
Keeping up with construction in southern
New Jersey requires a large volume of concrete
from companies such as Redy Mixt Konkrete.
The company has two locations, Woodbury
and Clayton, from which its 18-truck fleet
supplies a multitude of customers.
Owned by Bud Tresch, the 50-year-old
company also takes in old concrete at its
Woodbury plant, crushes it and sells it for
road base. In both the crushing and making
of concrete at the plant, Redy Mixt uses a
Komatsu WA320-3 wheel loader it purchased
from Binder Machinery in 2001.
“It’s our main piece of equipment because
we use it to load the crusher as well as load
sand and gravel in our concrete plant,” said
Operator Kenny Eachus, who’s been a fixture
behind the wheel of the 162-horsepower
loader that recently reached the 16,000-hour
mark. “We’re working steadily, six days a
week, so we need equipment that doesn’t
break down. The Komatsu loader has stood
up to the challenge. It still has all its original
components; we haven’t rebuilt anything.”
I call when we’re within about 40 hours of
needing it done, and they plan it for a time that
doesn’t interfere with our production.
“It makes sense for Binder technicians to
handle the maintenance services,” he added.
“They know the machinery and what it takes
to keep it running smoothly. If I see that the
scheduled time is not going to work for some
reason, I call them back and reschedule. I really
appreciate the flexibility they have shown.”
Kenny Eachus,
Operator
Quick response time
Eachus also appreciates how quickly Binder
Machinery responds if an issue does occur.
“We’ve really only had one issue, where oil lines
went out, and we needed the machine up and
running right away,” he said. “I called Binder
Machinery and within an hour they were
here. With only one machine, we’re not large
customers, but Binder treats us as if we were.” n
Binder Machinery has performed all services on Redy Mixt Konkrete’s Komatsu WA320-3
wheel loader since the company purchased it in 2001. Operator Kenny Eachus credits
Binder Machinery’s Preventive Maintenance Service with keeping it just as productive
today — with 16,000 hours — as it was when the company bought it.
Eachus credits much of that longevity to
Binder Machinery’s Preventive Maintenance
Service. Since Redy Mixt bought the machine,
Binder Machinery has done all service work
on the WA320-3, including oil samples at all
service intervals. Every sample has come back
completely clean.
“That’s a real testament to Komatsu quality,
but it makes just as big a statement about
Binder’s commitment to service and keeping
our machinery in proper working order. We’re
very meticulous about getting the scheduled
services done on time, and Binder has been
great about working them into our schedule.

WIRTGEN TRAINING
Binder technicians undergo factory training
on world’s No. 1 milling machine
H
Having taken on the Wirtgen line of road
construction products, Binder Machinery
Company is in the process of training
technicians and sales representatives to
provide all the support services that a Wirtgen
customer might want.
“Product support is what we hang our hat
on at Binder Machinery, so training is ongoing
for all the products we carry,” said Binder
Training Manager Ed Snyder. “But when we
take on a new line like the Wirtgen Group
(Hamm rollers, Vögele pavers and Wirtgen
milling machines), it’s imperative that our
technicians are up to speed on the machines
immediately so we’re able to make any needed
repairs quickly and efficiently.”
Binder technicians have already received
training on the Hamm rollers and Vögele
pavers. In early March, they also completed
both electrical and hydraulic training on
Wirtgen milling machines.
“We carried milling machines in the past,
but it was many years ago,” said Snyder. “So
we had three technicians from the Winslow
branch and six from South Plainfield go
to Wirtgen’s American headquarters near
Nashville, Tennessee, for four days of electrical
training and three days of hydraulic training.

New Jersey, providing them with information
to assist in proper machine maintenance,
as well as the basics of the electrical and
hydraulic systems. n
Binder Machinery
Company recently
held a customer
training day at both
the South Plainfield
and Winslow
branches for the
Wirtgen milling
machines that Binder
now represents.
In addition to the recent training on Wirtgen milling machines, Binder technicians took
training courses last fall on Hamm rollers and Vögele pavers.
“Wirtgen milling machines are a dominant
worldwide leader,” he added. “They’re
well-made and they’re technologically
superior, but they’re also very involved
electrically. That’s why we’re taking steps to
make sure we’re able to provide the support
that our customers will need.”
In conjunction with the technician training,
Binder and Wirtgen also put on a one-day

Binder receives honor from EMCA for 50 years of service
B
Binder Machinery received an award
honoring its 50 years in the equipment
business from New Jersey’s Equipment
Management Council of America (EMCA) at a
recent meeting of the group. Binder Machinery
was founded in 1957 by Walter Binder.
“This is really a great honor,” said Ed
Snyder, Binder Machinery Training Manager.
“We’re privileged to be in business with our
customers, some of whom we’ve dealt with
almost as long as the company has been
in business. We salute them as well as the
founders of the company and thank EMCA for
recognizing us.”
Binder Machinery has been part of the
EMCA organization for several years. The
organization’s objectives include a chance
to network with other dealers, vendors and
contractors in New Jersey and discuss topics
of interest to their businesses. The group
meets nine to 10 times per year at varying
locations, including Binder Machinery
branches.
“There’s no competition here; members are
just people who have a stake in improving
the equipment industry, working together to
find ways to make it better. We try to work
on ways we can improve our businesses, our
customers’ businesses and the equipment
industry in general,” Snyder noted.
New Jersey EMCA President Bob Lynch (left) presents an award for 50 years in business to
Alan Binder, Binder Machinery Vice President of Operations for South Jersey.
“We really appreciate all the support Binder
has provided over the years in helping EMCA
grow,” said EMCA President Bob Lynch.
“We’re very pleased to honor Bob Binder and
the Binder family with this recognition and
give special thanks to Ed Snyder for all his
help.” n
Binder promotes Meka at South Plainfield branch
P
Pete Meka still enjoys working on machinery
after 22 years. He doesn’t plan on giving that
up, even though he was recently promoted from
Service Technician to Service Administrator at
Binder Machinery’s South Plainfield branch.
Meka has been with Binder 22 years, most of
those spent on the road as a Field Technician.
He’ll stay in the shop now, handling phone calls
from customers, setting service schedules and
dispatching the 30-plus technicians the branch
has.
“It brings me indoors, but I’ll still work on
machinery here in the shop,” said Meka. “I’ll be
a resource and support for the field and shop
guys, working with them to diagnose and solve
technical and other problems.” n

QUALITY USED EQUIPMENT
Komatsu Distributor Certified used machines
add value to this contractor’s operations
W
When Rupert Lemons bought and began
running Carson Construction in 1980,
doing dirt work wasn’t on his mind. The
Phoenix-based business’ sole focus was
concrete construction, but it didn’t take long
for Lemons to add excavation work.
“We weren’t satisfied with the quality of work
we were getting from the people who were
preparing the subgrade for us, so I decided
we should do it ourselves,” said Lemons, who
serves as President of Carson Construction,
while his wife, Kay, is Vice President. “In
those early stages, we did smaller jobs, such as
sidewalks and driveways for private residences,

used machines, including
PC400LC-7 excavators,
a WA380-5 wheel loader
and a BR380JG mobile
crusher. “They’ve
performed exceptionally
well — beyond our
expectations. They’re a
great value,” he said.

apartments and commercial properties. Once
we added the dirt work, our focus shifted to
doing more large-scale municipal projects.”
Carson Construction typically works as a
general contractor that self performs everything
on a job from mass excavation and building
walls to paving and installing street lights.
Like all contractors, Lemons looks for value
in the equipment he uses to get the job done.
That’s why he has several Komatsu Distributor
Certified used machines in his fleet. The Komatsu
Distributor Certified pieces include three
PC400LC-7 excavators, a WA380-5 wheel loader
and a BR380JG mobile crusher he typically uses at
his Ten X quarry site near Wickenburg, Ariz.
The right equipment decision
“Our first Distributor Certified machine
was a PC400 excavator, which we used at the
quarry to feed a crusher,” Lemons noted. “It’s
a demanding application, but the machine
never had a problem. That sold us on the value
of the Distributor Certified machines and led
us to buy the additional Komatsu pieces. I
knew they had been inspected thoroughly
and that they would have a good warranty.
The low interest rates and financing through
Komatsu Financial made them affordable.
“We’ve been proven right in our decision
to buy the Komatsu Distributor Certified
machines,” he added. “They’ve performed
exceptionally well — beyond our expectations.
They’re a great value. We do get into some
rough conditions at the quarry and on some of
our jobsites, but the excavators still have very
good power to dig and they provide excellent
cycle times. We expect that to be the case for
some time to come. If we need additional
equipment, Komatsu Distributor Certified
used machines will be a first option for us.” ■
If it can be measured,
we measure it!
Whether you’re looking for a highquality machine that will become part of
your fleet, or for a machine that will get you
through the busy season, Komatsu Distributor Certified Used Equipment is your best alternative to buying new.
If it can be measured, we measure it! Specially trained Komatsu Distributor Certified evaluators check, measure and diagnose
virtually every aspect of the machine. Once the machine meets Komatsu’s high performance standards, your local distributor
can tailor the machine for your site-specific needs. And to add to your peace of mind, most Komatsu Distributor Certified Used
Equipment is eligible for special financing and warranty.
Purchasing Komatsu Distributor Certified Used Equipment makes sound business sense. You’ll receive good value for
your money and a reliable and productive machine that will get the job done for years to come — we guarantee it!
