They include a cartwheeling spider; fossils of a “feathered dinosaur”; a beautiful sea slug that photographs in brilliant blues, reds and golds; a Christmas-colored plant that grows in near isolation in Mexico; and a pufferfish whose males make intricate seafloor “crop circles” as spawning nests. Such discoveries — regardless of how old or new the species are — demonstrate the ongoing creativity of God, who both does new things and gives people new abilities to discover them. Recently, we began a new church year with Advent. At Christmas, God did a new thing by becoming human. Now we launch into a new calendar year, in which scientists will surely discover more new creatures. Respectfully submitted, Regina Rothgeb, Church Clerk Let me introduce you to Calvin James Heatwole. He is the son of Ian and Tori Heatwole, grandson of Gerald and Mindy Garber, and great-grandson of the late Calvin and Edith Garber. Yes, he is named after his great-grandfather, so he has a long line of family heritage at Pleasant Valley Church. Calvin is a senior at Fort Defiance High School and is active in the marching band, choir, and FFA. When he is not busy with those activities he is working on the family farm – Fox Run Farms – which is a dairy and poultry operation. What’s on your playlist? Calvin prefers rock music, including the groups Shine Down and Skillet. Favorite Movie: The Lion King Favorite Book: 1984 by George Orwell Favorite place to eat out: Woodfired Grill What is something that people might not know about you? Calvin is somewhat of a world traveler. He visited China with his grandmother, Mindy Garber, and has also traveled to Peru and Canada. Calvin’s future plans are tied to this love of travel. He is hoping to participate in an agricultural exchange program to Australia. He has applied to several programs that range in length from 3 to 12 months. After his travels, he will return here to work on the family farm. Winter Camp – February 12-13, 2016 Do you miss your friends and counselors from camp? Shenandoah District Disaster Ministries Disaster Response Teams Need Volunteers The Shenandoah District Disaster Ministries Coordinating Team continues to offer opportunities for service. The Shenandoah District Disaster Ministries Coordinating Team is looking for a crew of five to seven volunteers for a service project in Spotswood, N.J., for Jan. 17-13. This is an addition to the 2016 schedule posted earlier, and the work in New Jersey should be completed in January. From Feb. 21-27, Briery Branch Church of the Brethren is taking the lead, but another 15 workers can join the group. As Spotswood likely will be closed, this trip probably will go to Harts, W.Va. The March 13-19 trip will go to Harts, W.Va., and will need 15 volunteers. Then April 9-25 Shenandoah District volunteers will be in Colorado on a two-week project, returning late on April 24 or early on the 25th. May 1-7 is scheduled for Harts, W.Va., and 15 volunteers are needed. Remaining dates are June 12-18, July 17-23, Aug. 21-27, Sept. 18-24, Oct. 9-15, October 30-Nov. 5 and Dec. 11-17. Jerry Ruff, district coordinator, reports: "As of Dec. 10, it looks like we will close Spotswood in late January or early February and open up the project in Harts W.Va. We should be there throughout most of the summer and late fall. When we close Colorado, we hope to be working in South Carolina. One thing that is consistent in all of these locations is that we need volunteers. How about giving me (Jerry Ruff - 540-447-0306), Warren Rodeffer (540-471-7738) or Galen Halterman (540-941-8425) a call and signing up. It's exciting, rewarding and the right thing to do." The 24th annual Shenandoah District Disaster Ministries Auction will be May 20 and 21 at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds. The 2015 auction raised more than $211,000, plus an additional $4,300 for the Nigerian Crisis Fund. Start Collecting for CWS Kits - The Depot is Coming! This spring, the Shenandoah District's Disaster Ministries Center (adjacent to the District Office) will again be a Kit Depot for the collection of Church World Service hygiene kits, emergency clean-up buckets and school kits. Individuals and church groups may participate by collecting and assembling kits and delivering them to the Depot beginning April 4 and continuing each week (Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.) through May 12. Or, you may schedule a time to come to the Kit Assembly Room in the Disaster Ministries Center to assemble kits from the inventory of items stored there. Shenandoah District’s Brethren Disaster Ministries has set up a team to purchase all the KIT supplies in bulk. If you, a group from your church or your youth group would like to make KITs here at the District Office, please contact Karen Meyerhoeffer (540-248-1160) and she’ll set up an appointment. We ask that you reimburse the amount of the supplies (so we can replenish the supplies) and to pay for the shipping costs. Or, if you’d like to purchase your own supplies, the lists of items you’ll need for each KIT is on the table in the narthex. Thank you for your support and generosity to Disaster Ministries.
