LIGHTING GUIDE
Aperture size is the nominal diameter of the trim opening. The Lithonia Downlighting product line includes 6-inch and 8-inch apertures for use with incandescent, compact fluorescent, low voltage and HID sources.
Choosing the correct aperture for an application often depends on design parameters (requirements) or personal preference. The 6-inch aperture provides a
smaller opening in the ceiling, while the 8-inch aperture product offers good lamp cut-off and glare control. The 8-inch aperture is ideal for higher mounting
heights. Fewer 8-inch fixtures are required to achieve the necessary footcandle level, which results in a lower initial fixture and lamp cost and energy savings.
The chart below summarizes the results of a common layout comparing 6-inch and 8-inch aperture downlights. The layouts were performed utilizing Visual®
lighting design software.

CHOOSING A FINISH:
REFLECTOR CONSIDERATIONS:
When selecting the appropriate downlight for an application, the quality characteristics under consideration are efficiency, glare control and low brightness.
High-efficiency downlights allow a space to be lit with as few fixtures as possible, resulting in energy savings. Efficiency cannot be the only consideration. A
bare incandescent lamp offers 100% efficiency but also has a high amount of glare and brightness.
Quality downlighting subtly lights an application without drawing attention to the ceiling plane or the fixture itself. The Lithonia Downlighting product line
has properly-designed reflectors that offer low angle aperture brightness at a high angle. The result is minimized discomfort and glare.
Lithonia Downlighting products offer the proper combination of efficiency, glare control, and low brightness to meet both functional and aesthetic requirements.
Glare
The downlight in this example has a poor lamp
cut-off angle and inferior
reflector design, causing
uncomfortable glare.
Cut-off
Lamp cut-off is defined by the
angle at which
the lamp becomes visible. Our
reflectors are designed to balance good lamp cut-off
while maximizing lumen
output, creating high fixture
efficiency.

LIGHTING THE APPLICATION:
There are different techniques to lighting your space. Listed below are some typical uses of downlights in a commercial environment.

OVERHEAD ACCENTING
Light should be aimed at a 30° angle from
vertical. This is to prevent light from interfering with the line of sight. For greater visual
interest, aim a second light from a different
position.
VERTICAL SURFACE ACCENTING
Objects and pictures generally look best
when lighted at an angle of 30° from vertical. Based on an average eye level of 65”,
the illustration shows how far from the wall
to install a recessed light fixture.
Use concentrated beams of light to draw attention to an object or surface. For contrast, light levels
should be 4 - 5 times higher than the general light level in a room.

CHOOSING THE LIGHT SOURCE:
When selecting the light source for your application, there are some things you need to take into consideration:
HID
Yoke provides mechanical trim retention
Encased-and-potted, high power factor (HPF)
dual tap 120/277 volt ballast is standard.
Socket housing attaches to reflector
to insure proper lamp position
Electronic metal halide ballast 120/277 volt.

COLOR RENDERING INDEX :
COLOR TEMPERATURE :
The Color Rendering Index (CRI) is a relative scale to determine a light source’s ability to render an object’s color. The higher the number, 100 being the best,
the better the color rendering. Specify a source that has 90+ where color matching/selection is occurring; 80+ for pleasant appearance of people, food
and merchandise; 70+ for offices, educational, health care and institutional settings; 50+ for most industrial tasks.
Color Temperature is measured in degrees Kelvin and represents
whether the light source appears warm (1,500K), neutral
(3,500K), cool or daylight (5,500K). The chart below highlights
the color temperature and how it affects the mood of the space.
