Richmond wish the Villa Marina Complex
continued success
Northern Ireland-based company Richmond Reproductions, designed,
manufactured and installed the bars and reception counters within the Villa
Marina Complex. Their team has ensured that the new bars complement and
retain the original feel of the Villa Marina and establish a relationship between
all the bars and the auditorium, evoking the heritage of the early 20th century.
Production Director of Richmond Reproductions, David Stewart, would like
to wish Steve Dawson and everyone at The Villa Marina the very best of luck
with the opening.
He said: ‘I would like to wish everyone at the Villa Marina continued
success. I am confident that the newly refurbished building will receive
excellent feedback and attract thousands of tourists.

The ground beneath your feet
You’ll be treading on award-winning flooring in the new Villa Marina.
‘Since 1984 Richmond has led the field in the design, manufacture and
installation of pub, club, hotel and restaurant interiors in the north and south
of Ireland. I am delighted that as a result of being associated with the
prestigious Villa Marina contract we are now making an impact in the UK
hospitality sector.
‘We are very proud to be associated with the Villa Marina and look forward
to the grand opening.’
W. H. Beckett and Co, flooring contractors, won the award for floor installation of the year from
the Contract Flooring Journal – the official journal of the Contract Flooring Association.
K C M Y
This prestigious award was made for the high quality of the fitting, for the materials that were used,
and for the diversity of the materials used, as well as the intricacy of the work required to achieve a
finished product in keeping with a high quality refurbishment.
Beckett’s laid Axminster and Wilson carpets in the Royal Hall and surrounding wide corridor,
maple in the function rooms and high quality Karndean vinyl in the bars as well as more conventional
flooring throughout the complex.
Beckett’s general manager Gary Moore said: ‘The job was complicated by the location. We had to
get the material to the Isle of Man and much of it was manufactured in Holland. We worked closely
with the architect so a lot of the design work was completed before we arrived on site. The fitting
required a highly skilled team so overall it was a challenging job. We’re extremely pleased to have
won the award.’

t last the doors are ready to open! Since I was
appointed Minister of Tourism in 1996 a lot of
hard work has gone in to get us to this day. My
Tynwald colleague Eddie Lowey has looked after progress
on a day to day basis on my behalf and we are sure you
will be amazed with your new Villa Marina. The vision of
the great Manx architect Ian Brown is ready to be shared
with you all. The new additions blend wonderfully with the
Royal Hall - that special place in the hearts of so many
people over the years. The lovely garden setting round the
Villa is once again an area for peace and tranquillity in the
rush of everyday life. The Villa complements the other gem
in my department's portfolio, Frank Matcham's masterpiece
the Gaiety Theatre. We hope to complete our project in
the near future with a major refurbishment of the arcade,
which will be the final phase of our works which began
with the colonnade. Beautiful as both these buildings are,
we look forward to everyone being entertained with a
wide range of the performing arts in the years ahead, when
new memories will be made for future generations.
A
He said: ‘The new Villa Marina is very close to
the original concept. It’s a mixture of old and
new and there were quite a number of challenges
but it was a fantastic opportunity and we have
thoroughly enjoyed it.’
Initially, Ellis Brown placed advertisements in
local newspapers asking the public how they
would like to see the Villa Marina developed.
Charlie is confident that people will be
impressed by the way in which the original
Edwardian grandeur has been retained in a
modern entertainments complex.
The project was challenging for the architects
largely because they were redeveloping an
existing building. Much greater flexibility has
been introduced, with the creation of one large
function room that can divided into three
smaller rooms, four bars serving the Royal Hall,
along with a brand new cinema and children’s
play area.
Ellis Brown’s Voirrey Samson, who was project
architect, said: ‘Now with a much more defined
link to the Gaiety Theatre, the complex has
fantastic flexibility. The main entrance is the
hub from which everything flows. The levelling
of the concert area in the gardens has also made
quite an impression.’
One of the first impressions visitors will have
is of how light and airy the building is inside.
Voirrey said: ‘We now have sunlight coming
through the cupola and at night the light coming
from inside will be a beacon across the
promenade. The whole building is much
brighter.’
K C M Y
He said: ‘Back then we said it was a case of the
refurbishment of the arcade, which will make the
complex complete.

We are happy to have designed

good, the bad and the ugly. The good was the
Royal Hall, the colonnade and the gardens. The
bad was the Indian restaurant and the ugly was
the garden room and the entrance. The idea was
to keep the good, remove the bad and improve
the ugly. The Royal Hall is the core of the
building and, by moving the main entrance off
the promenade, we have given the gardens more
prominence. The improved colonnade links the
Villa Marina to the Gaiety, completing the
entertainments complex.’
When it was built the roof span was the largest
in Europe. There are no fewer than 73,585 roof
tiles on the new building.
Right down to the smallest detail, the designs
reflect what previously existed. Charlie Park said:
‘We retained the window and door styles and
reintroduced the original motifs on the carpets
and flooring, banisters and staircases. We
designed lights for the entrance hall that
continued the historical concept.
‘Overall, it’s been a great team effort.’

Ian Brown – architect of this jewel in

The magnificent new Villa Marina

of a heart

2002 at the

the new Villa

without a
doubt, his
creation.
Journalist
Terry Cringle, a close friend, said:
‘The whole design and spirit of the
place has been Ian’s work. He must
have spent the last 10 years of his
life on the design work. He was a
Manxman and took the commission
very seriously. The new Villa Marina
is a monument to him – his last
master work.’
Before his
death, he was
regularly to be
found on site as
the
refurbishment
progressed and
was closely
involved in all
aspects of the
project.
Terry said: ‘If
Ian had been
alive for the
opening he
would have
been in his element. He was a man
who enjoyed praise, especially when
it was due to him. He would have
had a wonderful time. Ian saw the
Villa Marina as the greatest of all his
design projects.’

also adapt for outdoor gigs in the Villa Marina gardens.
‘Because sound and light equipment is getting smaller
and more user friendly there’s less visual impact. It’s not as
intrusive as the old system. And we can cater for
everybody. There isn’t a group that can’t be catered for.’
The history
What we know as the Villa Marina is one of the landmark
buildings of Douglas and has been a feature of the
promenade since the early nineteenth century.
The land the building now stands on was bought by
George Steuart in 1806. He died shortly afterwards and his
son, Robert, had the house built for his mother. The
property became a school on her death and was then the
residence of Governor Pigot, signalling the move of the Isle
of Man's capital from Castletown to Douglas.
When Governor Pigot died in 1868 the building and its
surrounding land was acquired by philanthropist Henry
Bloom Noble for £7,000 and, in his will, was offered for sale
to the Borough of Douglas for development as a tourist
attraction. He died in 1903 and, in 1910, the estate then
known as Marina Lodge was purchased by Douglas
Corporation from the Noble’s Trustees for £60,000.
gardens and colonnade.
The Gaiety has just benefited from a 10 year restoration
programme that saw much of the original features of Frank
Matcham’s design returned to their former glory. Now the
Villa Marina refurbishment is complete, the overall
complex is able to offer the finest entertainment and
function facilities in keeping with the Island’s biggest and
newest venue.

It presently contains shops, offices and public

need of total restoration. Plans include installing the

of the arcade to form the showpiece of a new look arcade
that, like the Villa Marina and Gaiety, retains its original
character while upgrading to meet 21st century needs.
The two buildings are linked by the newly refurbished

history and the complex as a whole is now well equipped to

functions that require catering – making the Villa Marina
the largest venue for catered events in the Isle of Man.
The Royal Hall is surrounded on both levels by a
spacious corridor and is serviced by four bars, each with
their own special character.
The door to the right of the main reception desk leads
through to two new multi-purpose function rooms.
Downstairs is the Promenade Suite, the larger of the two
function suites, that can be divided down to create the
Loch, Harris and Queen’s meeting rooms. When used as a
single room it can seat 150 people in theatre-style or cater
for 120 people for dining.
Above the Promenade Suite is the Colonnade
Suite, which has spectacular views over Douglas
Bay and opens out on to the raised colonnade
terrace. The Colonnade Suite can seat 100 people
for dining and has a total capacity for 120 people.
The enthusiasm of staff and management has played an
instrumental role in the relaunch of the Villa Marina.
A professional and courteous service is guaranteed from a
staff that are justifiably proud of their new facility.
Geoff le Page says: ‘For the past
three years we have had to restrict
numbers on the Irish bank holiday
weekends, for example. The size of
the venues available could not cater
for such large numbers. Now we can.
We can also now bring bigger stars
and acts to the Island.
General manager is Steve Dawson, who has been
involved at every stage of the project and brings a wealth of
experience to supervising the smooth running of the Villa
Marina.
Steve said: ‘It’s been exciting and exhilarating – and a lot
of hard work for everybody. The buzzword has been
partnership. Personally, that involved weekly meetings with
the architects, monthly meetings with the design team and
countless on-site meetings. As well as being involved in the
refurbishment I have been responsible for the fitting out.
‘If we are going for out of season business there are plenty
of beds available. The longer the season, the better it is for
our hoteliers. We have been looking forward to the
reopening of the Villa Marina. It will certainly enable us to
get to markets that have been very difficult for us to reach
in the past.’
‘The new Villa Marina does look fabulous and it’s a
credit to everybody who has been involved. It’s been pure
teamwork.’
In terms of service, the refurbished Villa has been
compared to a five star hotel without the beds and this
fresh approach is reflected in the new staff uniform.

The two buildings are linked by the newly refurbished

history and the complex as a whole is now well equipped to

t last the doors are ready to open! Since I was
appointed Minister of Tourism in 1996 a lot of
hard work has gone in to get us to this day. My
Tynwald colleague Eddie Lowey has looked after progress
on a day to day basis on my behalf and we are sure you
will be amazed with your new Villa Marina. The vision of
the great Manx architect Ian Brown is ready to be shared
with you all. The new additions blend wonderfully with the
Royal Hall - that special place in the hearts of so many
people over the years. The lovely garden setting round the
Villa is once again an area for peace and tranquillity in the
rush of everyday life. The Villa complements the other gem
in my department's portfolio, Frank Matcham's masterpiece
the Gaiety Theatre. We hope to complete our project in
the near future with a major refurbishment of the arcade,
which will be the final phase of our works which began
with the colonnade. Beautiful as both these buildings are,
we look forward to everyone being entertained with a
wide range of the performing arts in the years ahead, when
new memories will be made for future generations.

He said: ‘The new Villa Marina is very close to
the original concept. It’s a mixture of old and
new and there were quite a number of challenges
but it was a fantastic opportunity and we have
thoroughly enjoyed it.’
Initially, Ellis Brown placed advertisements in
local newspapers asking the public how they
would like to see the Villa Marina developed.
Charlie is confident that people will be
impressed by the way in which the original
Edwardian grandeur has been retained in a
modern entertainments complex.
The project was challenging for the architects
largely because they were redeveloping an
existing building. Much greater flexibility has
been introduced, with the creation of one large
function room that can divided into three
smaller rooms, four bars serving the Royal Hall,
along with a brand new cinema and children’s
play area.
Ellis Brown’s Voirrey Samson, who was project
architect, said: ‘Now with a much more defined
link to the Gaiety Theatre, the complex has
fantastic flexibility. The main entrance is the
hub from which everything flows. The levelling
of the concert area in the gardens has also made
quite an impression.’
One of the first impressions visitors will have
is of how light and airy the building is inside.
Voirrey said: ‘We now have sunlight coming
through the cupola and at night the light coming
from inside will be a beacon across the
promenade. The whole building is much
brighter.’

He said: ‘Back then we said it was a case of the
refurbishment of the arcade, which will make the
complex complete.

We are happy to have designed

good, the bad and the ugly. The good was the
Royal Hall, the colonnade and the gardens. The
bad was the Indian restaurant and the ugly was
the garden room and the entrance. The idea was
to keep the good, remove the bad and improve
the ugly. The Royal Hall is the core of the
building and, by moving the main entrance off
the promenade, we have given the gardens more
prominence. The improved colonnade links the
Villa Marina to the Gaiety, completing the
entertainments complex.’
When it was built the roof span was the largest
in Europe. There are no fewer than 73,585 roof
tiles on the new building.
Right down to the smallest detail, the designs
reflect what previously existed. Charlie Park said:
‘We retained the window and door styles and
reintroduced the original motifs on the carpets
and flooring, banisters and staircases. We
designed lights for the entrance hall that
continued the historical concept.
‘Overall, it’s been a great team effort.’

Ian Brown – architect of this jewel in
the crown
The magnificent new Villa Marina
reflects the vision of one man – the
late Ian
Brown.
A partner in
the firm of
architects Ellis
Brown, he
died suddenly
of a heart
attack in May
2002 at the
age of 56, but
the new Villa
Marina is,
without a
doubt, his
creation.
Journalist
Terry Cringle, a close friend, said:
‘The whole design and spirit of the
place has been Ian’s work. He must
have spent the last 10 years of his
life on the design work. He was a
Manxman and took the commission
very seriously. The new Villa Marina
is a monument to him – his last
master work.’
Before his
death, he was
regularly to be
found on site as
the
refurbishment
progressed and
was closely
involved in all
aspects of the
project.
Terry said: ‘If
Ian had been
alive for the
opening he
would have
been in his element. He was a man
who enjoyed praise, especially when
it was due to him. He would have
had a wonderful time. Ian saw the
Villa Marina as the greatest of all his
design projects.’
