Auld Lang Syne
The most commonly sung song for English-speakers on New Year's eve,
"Auld Lang Syne" is an old Scottish song that was first published by the
poet Robert Burns in the 1796 edition of the book, Scots Musical Museum.
Burns transcribed it (and made some refinements to the lyrics) after he
heard it sung by an old man from the Ayrshire area of Scotland, Burns's
homeland.
"Auld Lang Syne" literally translates as "old long since" and means "times

But it was bandleader Guy Lombardo, and not Robert Burns, who popularized the song and turned it into a New Year's tradition. Lombardo first
heard "Auld Lang Syne" in his hometown of London, Ontario, where it was
sung by Scottish immigrants. When he and his brothers formed the famous dance band, Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians, the song became one of their standards. Lombardo played the song at midnight at a
New Year's eve party at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City in 1929, and

Timothy Eaton’s is the place for you! Join our class
each Tuesday afternoon from 1:00-3:00 p.m. and
discover your creative side.
Paper tole is the art of
handcrafting threedimensional pictures from
flat prints. This art is created by skilfully cutting, shaping, and assembling pieces of paper layered onto
an image until a three-dimensional version of the
image emerges. Cost: $2.00/day

find various crafts for sale that have been hand made by
our members as well as a number of paintings and paper
tole pictures made by the ladies in our classes.

The annual celebratory tribute to the life, works and spirit of the great Scottish poet,
Robert Burns (1759-1796). Celebrated on, or about, the Bard's birthday, January
25th, Burns Suppers range from stentoriously formal gatherings of esthetes and
scholars to uproariously informal rave-ups of drunkards and louts. Our Burns Supper
falls in the middle of this range, and adheres, more or less, to some sort of time honoured form which includes the eating of a traditional Scottish meal, the drinking of
Scotch whisky, and the recitation of works by, about, and in the spirit of the Bard.
