A look back — Bradenton’s Loop revisited
W
hile growing up
in Palma Sola, also
known as “The
Loop” in Northwest Bradenton, longtime Loop resident
Charlie Jones remembers the
one lane dirt roads were a
place where neighbors often
stopped to chat.
“Anytime you passed on the
road, you stopped and visited,”
said the 84-year-old Jones, a
retired military colonel.
Today housing developments
replace the once pristine farmland dotted with Guava trees
and tomato fields. The Guava trees are gone, the panthers have disappeared, the
rattlesnakes have moved on,
and alligators are rarely seen
anymore.
“As a kid, you had to watch
the ground because of the rattlesnakes,” said Jones.
Jones once delivered newspapers to The Loop’s 76 residents as a young man, and
now, as one of the only original residents left, he can talk
in detail about The Loop’s
history, and what it was like
growing up in what has become one of Bradenton’s most
prestigious areas.
Back in the 1930s and 1940s,
Palma Sola was like any small
town. It consisted of a service station, a grocery store, a
church, a school, a post office,
a jelly factory, a shipyard, and
even a small electric manufacturing company. Houses and
farms were sprinkled up and
down the dirt roads known as
“north loop, south loop, and
east and west loop.” Neighbors knew each other well,
and were always there to lend
a helping hand.
“Most people didn’t have
a vehicle,” said Jones. “Mr.
Phelps had the grocery store,
and he would extend credit to most people until they
got paid.”
Sikes Service Station sat on
the northeast corner of what
is now 15th Avenue Northwest
and Riverview, recalled Jones.
It was the place for a card game
or a chance at the slots, while
at the same time offering service and gasoline for cars, recalled Jones.
“They had a lift for vehicles and two pumps,” he said.
“The pumps were the old type
where you had to pump the
gas into the sight gauge, and
then put whatever you wanted in your car.”
On the northwest corner
was the grocery store, and
on the southwest corner was
pasture land where children
played baseball, said Jones.
The Towlen family lived in
the downstairs of a two-story apartment house just about
20 feet away from the ball diamond.
“One of them had a blacksmith shop about 150 feet south
of that building,” he said. “He
actually made parts for boats
out of brass.”
On the east Loop road, which
is now 71st Street Northwest,
was the Lone Pine Preserving Company owned by the
Smith family, recalled Jones.
They were makers of Guava
jelly and orange peel candies,
and made a lot of jelly for the
troops in World War II, he added. They owned a lot of land on
9th Avenue Northwest, most
of it filled with Guava trees.
The land now is home to Orban’s Nursery.
Manatee County Sheriff
C.J. Hutches owned one of the
homes on 9th Avenue Northwest, recalled Jones. But it was
Robinson Preserve which is located on the northwest corner of The Loop
at 99th Street Northwest and 17th Avenue Northwest
later purchased by the Appledorns, who were known as being nudists.
“They had a sign in the
driveway that said ‘blow your
horn before you get out,’” said
Jones.
Known as the North Loop
Road, 17th Street Northwest,
had pine woods on both sides,
and at one time the military
bivouacked to the north in the
woods, said Jones. A few concrete posts from these encampments, still remain.
On that same street was
the only house in the neighborhood that suffered damage from a powerful hurricane that hit the area around
1943, said Jones.
“There was no other damage except for trees blown
over,” he added.
The Loop was an area rich
with farmland and very unique
in that it was one of the only
places that didn’t freeze because
of the warm waters from the
nearby river and bay, according to Jones. Residents grew
mostly tomatoes and squash,
although one farm was known
for its gladiolus. They also operated a cold storage at the corner of 99th Street Northwest
and 17th Street Northwest.
“The cold storage was to put
the gladiolus after they had been
cut,” said Jones. “They would
leave them in there until they
had a truckload.”
Fishing was a way of life for
many residents, but the only
dock into Palma Sola Bay was
owned by Mr. Arnold, recalled
Jones. On south side of the Manatee River were three houses
and a shipyard. The shipyard
also had a storage building to
house the boats for people who
only wintered in Florida.
“They built these beautiful mahogany boats for people like the Firestones, the
Edisons; people with money,” he said.
Jones had many more tidbits about the life and times
Palma Sola Community Church and cemetery which is located on 9th
Avenue Northwest
of The Loop, where he and
his wife, Bette, spent most of
their lives, and at one time operated a nursery. Most of its
residents are long gone, and
only a few houses and structures still remain like the Palma Sola School which is now
home to the Anna Maria Power Squadron.

“It’s good that people made
a good amount of money selling their property,” said Jones.
“The bad; there’s no camaraderie any more. When people
passed on the road, you stopped
and visited. Now, look out. You
might get run over.”
