Annual Meeting marks thirty years...
Marking the conclusion of a successful fundraising year to benefit the
library, the Friends' officers, board, library staff and interested volunteers
met in March to elect officers, report to the members and give out-going
director, Cara Russell, a well deserved thank you for her years of service.
The evening also celebrated the thirty years Friends has been serving the
community. The affair was capped off with the presentation of a $5,000
check to the library, with the promise of $5,000 more after the new Director
comes aboard and the library's needs and emerging programs are
established, for a grand total of $10,000 for the year.
There were several high points to the evening, but perhaps most poignant
was the unveiling of the Life Member plaque to be displayed permanently at
the library. Carl "Van" Vahrenkamp, who only recently passed away, and
his wife, Lois, were honored for being the first Life Members. President
Bobbie Hentschel, beginning her second year as President, thanked the
Vahrenkamps for their support and renewed the call for anyone interested
to step up and become involved. "Whether you have a lot of time or just a
little, there is plenty for all to do, as well as enjoying the camaraderie and
sense of accomplishment that comes with participating." Serving with
Hentschel as President, Karen Crowther is the incoming Vice President, Jan
Robinson continues as Treasurer and Mary Claypool will step in as
Secretary. Other Board members include Dominique Levens, Stephanie
Trexler and John Hoag.

Stop by and check us out...
The group is very excited about our participation in Founders Day activities
which will be highlighted by our booth on Mercer Street, Saturday, April
26th. This year will feature a repeat of Operation Gratitude, which will give
visitors who stop by the booth (including kids, too) the opportunity to write
a greeting to a member of our armed forces serving in harm's way
overseas. Raffle tickets for our upcoming drawing for three gift baskets full
of goodies will be available for purchase. There will be three baskets, the
Gourmet Griller, Springtime Spa and Gardening Guru, so there will be
something for everybody. Tickets are priced at one for $3, two for $5 and
five for $10. You can also become a member in the Friends. So stop by
and visit with our volunteers, write a letter to a soldier, join the Friends and
find out more about volunteering a little of your time to help the library.
Picking up a few raffle tickets might pay off handsomely, too.
Stop by our Founders Day booth and craft a letter to a serviceman or
woman as part of a nationwide effort to boost the morale of people serving
overseas. Then...buy some raffle tickets! Whoa, Nellie!
From the Prez.
For those of you who missed attending
the annual business meeting for the
Friends of the DS Library, it's too bad
because there will never be another
one quite like it! We had much to
share about the accomplishments of
2013. And we did!
 We said a final goodbye to Cara
Russell, thanking her for her past
support of the Friends. We wish
her well.
 We unveiled the plaque honoring
our first Friends for Life, Lois and
Van Vahrenkamp. We also
selected a book which will be book
plated and added to the library's
collection in Van's memory.
The Prez. holds forth at Annual Meeting
 It was the first time for our newest board member, Dominique Levens,
to demonstrate her baking/hospitality skills. Her table presentation
was as delightful to the eye as it was to the palate.
 All the Starbucks goodies we enjoyed were courtesy of Stephanie
Trexler, who finds time to participate in Friends activities when she's
not on the job as a regional manager. Thanks Stephanie.
 It was the first time Friends members could pick up their membership
donation gifts following the best membership drive ever in 2013.
Thanks, Karen Crowther, for your artistic creation of our new logo,
found on the 30th Annivesary Commemerative mugs, brochures,
tickets, stationary and bulletin board.
 And how about that bulletin board? As you may be rushing through
the vestibule, pause to take a look. It has information about the
Friends activities and is always bright and cheerful. Thanks, Mary
Claypool, for your attention to detail to make the bulletin board the
best ever! But that's not Mary's only skill. She has also brought us
into the current century as far as media contact is concerned, by
producing press releases and initiating a Facebook page that you will
see more of in the near future.
 Thanks also to Jan Robinson, our treasurer, for the great design in the
annual report brochure to let you know how your monetary donations
were distributed. Jan has also been a generous supporter in funding
our last membership drive and personally purchasing Quickbooks for
Non-profits. She makes sure every "i" is dotted and every "t" is
crossed.
So, there were a lot of people to thank, and most of all, our thanks go out
to you, who bought raffle tickets, baked goods, wine tasting tickets,
sponsorships and reached out in so many ways to provide the financial
support which is the back-bone of our mission. And we look forward with
great anticipation to providing further financial support to our incoming
director and her team as they chart the library's course in the year ahead.
See you at Founders Day.
Bobbie
Campaign
Kickoff 2014
The 2014 Givin’ Where I’m Livin’ (GWIL) campaign kickoff culminates with a
week of Online Giving, April 20-25th.
The Friends of the Dripping Springs Community Library announces our
involvement as one of the Dripping Springs area non-profit organizations
that will benefit from the "Givin' Where I'm Livin'" campaign during the
week of April 20-25. This is a wonderful opportunity to give online, with
your donation increased by contributions from event sponsors.
The Dripping Springs Community Foundation is modeled after the Austin
Community Foundation’s “I Live Here I Give Here” annual day of online
giving. The Dripping Springs GWIL campaign operates similarly but
culminates in one week of online giving in April, capped off by Founders Day
weekend, where donations can also be accepted at the DSCF booth.
The Friends has registered with this campaign and we are asking all our
supporters to donate to the GWIL campaign on behalf of the Friends of the
DS Library. The nonprofit organizations that raise the most money through
the online giving campaign win matching funds raised by the foundation.
What a terrific opportunity for our supporters to get an even bigger bang
for their buck!
A campaign page has been set up on the DSCF website
(givinwhereimliving.org) where folks can learn about this exciting campaign
and donate via a PayPal link to the Friends of the Dripping Springs
Community Library, from 12:01am, Sunday, April 20th, through 7pm,
Friday, April 25th. Donors MUST indicate the Friends of the Library when
they donate, in the PayPal memo window. Campaign matching funds
awards will be announced by the close of the Founders Day festival, on
Sunday, April 27th.
Show your support for our community library by participating in this online
campaign and making a contribution, or come by our Friends booth at
Founders Day and make a donation while visiting with us, or just make your
donation during your next visit to the library!

Pouring Over Books in the wings...
Event chair, John Hoag, announced recently the date and location for this
year's Pouring Over Books chat with local authors and wine tasting event.
Retired insurance executive, Fritz Holtz, and local art and antique dealer,
June Levy, will host the event at the original Triple Creek Ranch in Dripping
Springs. The ranch, a landmark dating to the early days of Dripping
Springs, features an outdoor pavilion in a beautiful rustic wooded setting.
The event will be held Sunday, October 19, 2014 in the late afternoon.
Mark your calendars now for our premiere fundraising event of the year.
Fritz Holtz, pictured at left in

Meet the New Library
Director, Marcia Atilano...
by newsletter editor, John Hoag
In a dash to meet our press
deadline, we caught up with incoming
library director, Marcia Atilano. Our
discussion was sandwiched between
wardrobe boxes, shipping crates and
furniture awaiting placement in their
new home. Despite the stress of moving,
Marcia came across as unflappable and
decidedly upbeat, especially about her
new position. Marcia and her family
have spent over 20 years in Texas, but
most recently lived in Columbus, Ohio.
so
They are looking forward to getting back to the greater Austin area.
When queried about the challenges of her new position, Marcia was
quick to point out the competence of the staff and enthusiasm of its
volunteer base. Said Atilano, "One of the things which attracted me to the
field is the opportunity to empower people, whether it is through technology,
personal assistance in the library or through children's programs, all of
which continue to be the three highest priorities of library patrons."
Another challenge facing the library is the matter of space. As
Dripping Springs continues to grow, the demand for library services grows
right along with it. She added, "While the library has been very well
managed, creating the space and environment to accommodate the
dynamic growth of the area must be addressed early on in anticipation of
the increasing demand for library services."
Leaving her to the task of unpacking and getting settled in, I felt very
comfortable that, under Marcia's leadership, the Dripping Springs
Community Library will continue to prosper and render outstanding service
to the community. Welcome aboard, Marcia. We look forward to getting
better acquainted at our next board meeting.
Thanks to our sponsors and
supporters for their
donations to our 2013

Poet's nook...
Storm Drain
(to be read aloud at warp speed)
Storm drain. Don't flood the plain
The rain in Spain, the Spanish Main
one if by land, two if by plane
the best laid plans, of mice and Jane
add soy sauce to your chow mein
you'll never trod that path again
or braid that silly horse's mane
fortune cookies they cause gain
wormy apples may cause pain
and cell phone mamas should abstain
roll up the pane to block the rain
and hold your horses by the rein
the homeless take the old A Train
gas up your tank with high octane
your half-track lumbers down the lane
Frenchy floats down the River Seine
Disraeli argues points arcane
and Gladstone threatens with his cane
while Churchill dubs them both insane
King Edgar had the briefest reign
two months twelve days, and all in vain
'twas Bill the Conquerer, Edgar's bane
the British throne he did obtain
and Jack be nimble, sing this refrain
take that with one salty grain
spinning fast, the weather vane
let's deplane from our bi-plane
while on the ground the Narc's detain
a guy for shooting up his vein
and lest we wax when we should wane
for lesser crimes men have been slain
so stop, dear friend, this pap inane
I think you've actually fried my brain
