This film was shot in Pune in 13/14 days and completed in 2 months. No money was charged by any artist, no lighting and costumes were used in this film and the total expenditure in making this film was a few lakhs only. Bharat Mazza Desh Aahe depicts the story of a middleclass family dealing with the value problems within the family and simultaneously experiencing the everyday possibility of corruption in their social life. Going through the experience of Andolan, their introspection helps them to discover a positive, non-corrupt and morally strong value based way of life. Sunil Sukhtankar another co-director / producer of the film said “It is not a issue based film. Watching Anna Hazare’s Andolan on television for two months before, gave lot of energy to the masses. The film is about our introspection regarding corruption. We find so many faces of corruption in our daily life”. Amol Gole, the young cinematographer of the film said it was a wonderful experience to work in this film using Cannon 5D camera. Vikram Gokhale said it was a great experience for him to work in the film free of charge. “I did even fast for 12 hours in Mumbai in support of Anna Hazare’s Andolan. It affected my personal life so much that I started accepting money by cheques only and paid proper tax. I am glad that the digital technology has been accepted by the film industry and the State Govt. of Maharashtra. I put 20% of my earnings for the charity for any good cause. Though I find that there are lot of clicking of the cameras and requests for autographs in this festival with the result that interaction between the filmmakers is reduced, unlike in the previous festival, I’d say that it is a very good festival” -- Satindar Mohan DAY 8 | 30th Nov, 2011 CiNEMA iS CULTURAL WEAPON TO BRiNG PEACE: POLiSH AMBASSADOR T he International Film Festival of India gives an opportunity not only to filmmakers, but even to authors to showcase their works. And as in previous authors, books on cinema have been released this time as well. His Excellency the Ambassador of Poland, Dr Piotr Klodkowski, said cinema was a powerful medium that could be used for peaceful purposes by spreading the message of oneness of man. People in his country had keen interest in the history of Indian cinema, Dr Klodkowski said while receiving a copy of the book ‘Pioneers of Indian Cinema’ by N Gopakakrishna, released by this correspondent, at The Open Forum yesterday. Cinema is the ‘saanskritik hathiyaar’ (cultural weapon) that the world needs today to bind it together since cinema has a universal language and knows no boundaries, His Excellency the Ambassador of Poland, Dr Piotr Klodkowski, said. He said that people in both India and Poland understood the importance of good cinema, and said films like ‘Kabhi Khusi Kabhi Ghum’ were as successful in his country as they were in India, because ‘mohabbat is mohabbat’. Dr Klodkowski announced that a memorandum of understanding for greater cooperation between India and Poland in the audio-visual field had been finalized and was expected to be signed early next year. The Ambassador of Poland, Prof. Piotr Klodkowski addressing at Open Forum He said that details about providing incentives to filmmakers from India coming to Poland or vice versa would be worked out after this agreement is finalized. The Ambassador, who can speak fluent Hindi and is attending the Festival for the third time, was speaking at the Open Forum on ‘Polish cinema: Nationally and internationally’. He admitted that Hollywood held sway in Poland but felt Polish cinema was coming up in a big way as what mattered was quality and not quantity. Leszek Dawid, whose film ‘My name is Ki’ is being screened here, said Poland had managed to produce around 40 films every year despite the Hollywood films and the current state of Polish cinema was good. He said the real problem lay in distribution and marketing but this was also being overcome as viewers recognized quality. Filmmaker Wieslaw Sanikewski who has directed ‘The Winner’ said in reply to a question that filmmakers who had left during the Soviet regime found it very difficult to come back to Poland as they had already made a mark for themselves in the countries of their adoption. However, most of them still preferred to make films in Poland and called themselves Polish directors. Commercial constrains imposed a different kind of censorship in today’s Poland, he said. -- B B Nagpal First timers laud iFFi as “Warm & Wonderful” Cinema is an ‘Artistic Tool’ For Strengthening Michael Bennet, Simon Kaijser Da Silva and Miclho Menchevski W hat is the role of film in a world suffering from illiteracy and a steep decline in bookreading?"This is a social issue that needs to be addressed in a wider context. The best filmmakers can do is to make good films. It is important to talk about truth and beauty in our films, rather than putting bums on cinema seats" asserted Milcho Manchevski, award winning NYC based film-maker from Macedonia which has 16 cinemas and produces two films a year. The director, screenwriter and producer of the docu-drama Mothers, was responding to a question from this correspondent at the Media Centre. He described his unsettling docu-drama as “a medita- tion on the nature of truth". New Zealander Michael Bennett acknowledged the "many joys which come from reading, but there are difficulties in getting the young to read literature." Bennett has directed and co-written his debut feature "Matariki" which intertwines the stories of nine lives affected by a random act of violence. Speaking about NZ's film industry, Bennett said it was distinguished by "either blockbusters (e.g LOTR, TinTin, Avatar) or low-budget films. There's nothing in-between." Filmmaking is about creating a unique world but films and books can be mutually beneficial, said Simon Kaijser da Silva, director of Stockholm East. "Many films have been made from bestsellers. I'd like more films based on original screenplays" says Swede whose debut film revolves around tragedy, rebirth and a love which is built on a foundation of lies. “In film, love is usually the hero’s reward but I wanted to make love the core conflict of the story because love is a healing force but it can also be potentially destructive.” Though the three have shown their films at numerous festivals including the Berlinale (Manchevski) Toronto (Bennett) and Venice (daSilva) but are first-timers at the 42nd IFFI. Manchevski said,"IFFI has been an incredibly positive experience for me, but then I'm biased because I love India (which accounts for 1/3rd of his new book of photographs) Bennett described the festival as "very warm and welcoming with a wonderful selection of films". DaSilva said IFFI is "very friendly with a different, definite charm of its own. And the Indian ambience! Unlike Sweden where there are no people at all on the streets in the winter, there is so much going on here!" -- Ronita Torcato Ties Between Two Countries -Prof Piotr Klodkowski, Polish Ambassador Prof. Piotr Klodkowski , Leszek Dawid, Grazyna Molska and Wieslaw Saniewski I ndian movies such as Fanaa and Azaan were shot in Poland. Indian producers and directors have shown great interest in making films in Poland. This year in the month of April, Amitabh Bachchan was in Poland for screening of his film ‘Paa’. He also recited ‘Madhushala’, said His Excellency Polish Ambassador, addressing the media yesterday. Amitabh Bachchan was surprised to see the Polish students learning Indian languages in Poland. The Ambassador said, Bollywood masala film with Polish subtitles are very much liked in Poland and recently films like Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gham were screened in Poland, had very good response, though there are audiences for Satyajit Ray films also. He also said that the Indian film Yeh Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara was shot in Spain. Polish people are also exposed to In- dian cinema and there is a notable increase in cultural exchange between the two countries, said Ambassador of Poland in India. Efforts were already underway. He said that he has known Hindi because he has to speak to his driver in Indian language. Wieslaw Saniewski , the director of the film ‘The Winner’, who has been a lecturer in film schools, said that they are experimenting with different formats of film making and getting good responses for the movie as well. He said he has got a book on Indian Mathematician Chandra and wants to make a film about the Indian Mathematician. Leszek Dawid, Director of the film ‘My Name is Ki’ said that his movie is about hope and optimism. Grazyna Molska, Producer of the movie ‘The Winner’ was also present on the occasion. - S. M. Ramachandra Aital, the ace cinematographer in January 2011 was not just a personal loss but a setback to a particular idea of cinema itself in the Kannada culture. For him, it was not just necessary to look at cinema as creative possibility because he felt that creativity in cinema demanded certain innate skills that could be beyond one’s intellectual imaginations. He did not profess an alternate cinema openly but supported a large number of filmmakers to look for alternate ways of making cinema both in content and construction. Learning the skills of cinematography from Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, academically, at a time when that skill was considered a mere technical accessory of the medium is itself an adventure in the untraveled path. But then, Ramu as he was familiarly known to his friends and acquaintances had always been unusual, building on hitherto unconstructed frames. Now we know that Samskara, considered as first ‘Navya’ film in Kannada was not a search for new cinema but an intellectual experiment using cinema. The actual ‘New Wave’ came a little later with a few enthusiasts technically trained and well informed having been exposed to varieties of cinemas of the World like Shankarappa, Girish Kasaravalli, UMN Sharif, Umesh Kulakarni and others and of Course S. Ramachandra. He was associated with almost every filmmaker who is now recognized as part of Kannada alternate film movement which included well known writers, theatre persons etc. The aesthetics of Cinema, apart from the Director’s creative and imaginative scripting, evolves from the creative skills of Cinematographer in the production stage and Editor in the final cut. It is in this context each work of Ramachandra needs to be studied upon. Just to get a glimpse of his accomplishments which has been remarkably consistent for more than three decades, one has to revisit his most acclaimed works Girish Kasaravalli’s Ghatashraddha (1977) and VRK Prasad’s Rushya Shringa (1976). IFFI 42 remembers Ramu as S. Ramachandra through his acclaimed work Chomana Dudi, being screened in IFFI. Jagran Film Festival takes films to cineaste’s homes - U. Radhakrishnan J agran Film Festival (JFF) is fast expanding the viewing kaleidoscope of quintessential film festivals that resonates the soul of heartland India. JFF is unique in the way it is conceptualized and executed and the manner in which the Indian cineaste is treated to the gems from Indian and world cinema. The cineaste doesn't come to the festivals; JFF takes the festival to his hometown. This was stated by U. Radhakrishnan, an advisor to JFF. Radhakrishnan added that the grandeur of being organized in13 cities in 6 different states over a duration of three months, is an unique experiment that has turned hugely successfully since its inauguration and has now grown stronger with a huge reputation in the film and cinephile fraternity as it moves into its second season this year. The philosophy of the festival lies in screening celebrating Hindi, Regional and World Cinema with audience located away from metropolises, but craving for quality cinema. Jagran Film Festival has now become the new reliable platform for mainstream and India filmmakers to showcase their work for audiences located beyond the known territories of their regular release circuits.Jagran Film Festival is in its second sea- son has the cooperation and active association of over 100 film celebrities from different genres of filmmaking. The festival has in its panel of mentors celebrities like Sudhir Mishra, Anurag Kashyap, Om Puri and Raveena Tandon. JFF has been showcasing films of a wide range in terms of themes, style and formats. It is designed and planned to aesthetically, catch the imagination of audience of all age groups. Film ranging from Children of Heaven (Majid Majidi, Iran) to Bol (Shoaib Mansoor, Pakistan) the festival has been able to cater to the cinema lovers of different tastes. The grand finale of Jagran Film Festival is clubbed with the JFF Awards in different categories of filmmaking. The awards are being adjudged by a Jury Panel that consists of members like Satish Kaushik, Lillete Dubey, Seema Kapoor, Amit Rai and Dr. Ashok Chakradhar. I have been fascinated by my interaction with Indian audience – Phillip Noyce I was lucky enough to catch hold of the world renowned and internationally acclaimed Australian director and master, Phillip Noyce, who is 6. 4 feet tall for a chat for Festival Bulletin immediately after his press conference at the ongoing 42nd IFFI, where he has five of his films in the Retrospective section. Phillip also took the Master Class ‘Concept to Film, the Phillip Noyce way’ at Maquinez Palace 1. Is it your first visit to Goa? Yes, it is my first visit to 42ND IFFI in Goa. But I came to Mumbai in 1978 for the first time but not as a film maker, it was a normal visit. When did you arrive at Goa and what is your plan? I came to Goa on 22nd Nov.11 and planning to leave on 28th Nov. to Rajasthan and Delhi along with my family consisting of my wife, ten month old daughter and 3 years and 10 month son. My wife is South African. Which was your first film? I directed my first film at the age of 18 in the year 1968. The name of the film was Better To Reign in Hell. It is a 15 min. duration film only. Which is your best film? Rabbit Proof Fence which was shown in 41st IFFI held last year. How many films are made in Austria in a year? 15-25 films are made in the year. Most of them are in English but a few of them in Mardu language (regional). Do you intend making any film in India? No. I have already two projects in my hand, one for Austria and one for Hollyhood. These projects are Our Wild Life and Timeless. How did you like your stay during these days? Unfortunately, I had some health problems. As such I could not spend all my time to watch various films. But I have enjoyed my stay. I have been greatly fascinated with the Q/A sessions after the screening of the film. There have been very good interactions of the audience with the directors. It is a great festival. This festival has got well acclaimed films from all over the world in various categories besides Master Classes being held by the world renowned film makers. I would love to come to Goa again for the next IFFI. How do you place this IFFI on the International map? I would rate the IFFI as a very prestigious International Film Festival. -- Satinder Mohan In tribute to the multi-faceted film personality Mr Chidananda Dasgupta: IFFI is organising a seminar on Film Criticism.
