Greetings From Your President Chamber Chat with Barb
January 2010 Volume 15 Issue 1
Greetings From Your President
We find ourselves living in a wonderfully exciting
part of Wisconsin. During our time here we will
enjoy it and use its many resources. In almost all
respects Wisconsin is a better place to live in right
now than it was in the past. The same can be said
about the Black River Area Chamber of
Commerce.
Today a greater proportion of the Black River
Area Chamber of Commerce is more informed,
wealthier, healthier, better fed, better educated and
more aware of others and their needs. It does not,
though, make us better than previous generations,
we are simply more fortunate. Being more
fortunate also necessitates a greater responsibility
to maintain our bountiful resources.
We inhabit this planet for a reasonably short time.
During that time, it is our right and privilege to
enjoy its resources and it is our duty and
responsibility to improve it for others both now
and in the future.
One thing is for sure, we all must leave it better
than we found it. So the next time you are
enjoying our lakes, rivers, walking trails,
campgrounds, downtowns, or simply passing
through, please remember to leave it better than
you found it.
To all of the individuals and businesses which
make up the Black River Area Chamber of
Commerce I wish you a prosperous and healthy
2010.
Be Well,
Wally Apland III

Winter Is Here²Now What?
Tips for warming up Wisconsin¶s ultimate
shoulder season
In destination marketing, the term ³shoulder
season´ stands for those times of the year when
nobody seems to want to travel. Occupancy rates
are down at lodging establishments, restaurants
are below capacity, attendance at attractions is
down and retailers see fewer customers walk
through their doors.
In many places in the northern United States,
winter is the shoulder season. In Wisconsin, the
post holiday shopping phase of winter is the
ultimate shoulder season. And springtime in
Wisconsin, with its unpredictable weather, can
also be excruciatingly slow for the state¶s travel
industry.
Shoulder seasons are a challenge. But as any
business owner knows, the most constructive way
to deal with a challenge is with thoughtful action.
So, here are several tried-and-true methods for
increasing business during Wisconsin¶s often long,
generally unpredictable winter travel shoulder
season:
Create an event. Mid-winter festivals,
open
houses,
trunk
shows,
live
entertainment²nearly any out-of-theordinary happening can be used to drum up
business during the long winter months.
Though it¶s hard to lure people out of their
warm homes, there is such a thing as cabin
fever. Give people exciting reasons to
travel, promote it properly and you¶re on
your way to injecting some warmth into
frozen winter sales numbers.
Target winter enthusiasts. Just who are
these
folks
who
love
winter?
Snowmobilers,
cross-country
skiers,
snowshoers, ice anglers, geocachers and
downhill skiers. Target these niche markets
with products or services that are
significant or timely to them and you
might find a new area for sales growth
during the winter. Targeting might be as
simple as putting a sign outside your
business that says, ³Welcome CrossCountry Skiers.´
Be big and bold with your sales pitch.
Winter is no time to be a shrinking violet.
Use big signage and bold sales language.
Big, Big, BIG and hot, hot, HOT is what
we¶re talking about. It takes a bit more
momentum to move consumers during the
mid-winter months.
Valentine¶s Day and Saint Patrick¶s
Day. Face it²winter can be very long in
Wisconsin. You need to use any excuse
possible to create some excitement and
interest.
Mid-winter
holidays
like
Valentine¶s Day and St. Patrick¶s Day²or
any holiday, real or made up²can serve as
the basis for some type of promotion.
Overnight packages. During late winter
and early spring, travelers in Wisconsin
tend to be short-term planners. Offering
overnight packages or other special
package deals can entice these last-minute
trip takers.
Cross-promote and partner. Work with
other businesses and local allies to help
one another increase customers. Strategic
partnerships between restaurants, lodging
and retailers can help to boost everyone¶s
mid-winter sales numbers.
Thoughtful action is the only way to counteract
the inevitable shoulder seasons that come around
each year. Make plans this year to have your best
winter ever.

The Black River Area Chamber of Commerce
Partners with Specialized Trade Groups to Host
Business Day in Madison Local Business Leaders
Urged to Attend to Promote Jobs at the Capitol
REGISTER FOR TWO EXCITING PROGRAMS
COMING IN FEBRUARY 2010! Attend the Governor
Candidate Forum on February 22, 2010, and Business
Day in Madison on February 23, 2010.
Black River Falls ± The Black River Area Chamber of
Commerce announced Monday that it will partner with
WMC and 14 other business groups to deliver the
message that jobs are the state¶s highest priority.
WMC and the Wisconsin local chambers of commerce
across our state will co-host the first Governor Candidate
Economic Forum and Reception on Monday, February
22, 2010. The Forum will be at the Monona Terrace
Community & Convention Center in Madison. As we
head into the 2010 election season, it is clear that jobs and
economic development will dominate the debate as our
state chooses our next governor. People from all walks of
life will be keenly interested in the candidates¶ ideas for
growing our economy. The Forum will precede the
annual Business Day in Madison event the following day,
and we encourage you to attend.
³We need to send a message to the Capitol that jobs are
the top priority for our state, our communities and our
families,´ said Barb Brower, Executive Director, of the
Black River Area Chamber of Commerce.
Business Day in Madison is the premiere business
legislative day at the Capitol, with 1,000 top executives
from the state¶s leading firms attending. The event is
held in partnership with WMC, the Wisconsin local
chambers; and many other specialized business trade
groups.
Business Day in Madison occurs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00
p.m. Tuesday, February 23 at the Monona Terrace
Community & Convention Center in Madison. Featured
speakers include former White House press secretaries
Dana Perino and Dee Dee Myers, and Charlie Cook, a top
Washington political analyst who will offer insights into
recent political trends in the nation.
(For more
information go to: www.businesssdayinmadison.com)
The event is open to the media.
³As Wisconsin works to come out of the recession,
businesses need to remain united in our commitment to
common sense solutions like tax relief, regulatory reform
and controlling lawsuit abuse to improve our business
climate,´ said Brower. Wisconsin¶s unemployment rate
has stabilized in recent months, but our business climate
recently ranked 48th in the nation, according to Forbes
magazine.
³The Legislature and Governor need to team up for job
creation and job retention. We won¶t be the most
competitive state over night. But we can get there if
everyone commits themselves to one common mission:
To make Wisconsin the most competitive state in the
nation,´ Brower said.
³Local business leaders are strongly encouraged to attend
Business Day in M adison. Our community needs to send
a strong delegation to Madison so our lawmakers
understand that we need more jobs in our community,´
said Brower.
Business Day in Madison tickets are available for
purchase online at www.businessdayinmadison.com or by
calling (608) 258-3400.
Business Day in Madison will be held on Tuesday,
February 23, 2010, at the Monona Terrace Community &
Convention Center in Madison. Local chambers of
commerce across Wisconsin are partnering with 15 other
statewide organizations to bring Wisconsin¶s premier
legislative event to Madison. Business leaders from all
over Wisconsin come together to meet with policymakers
and discuss important issues facing our state. In these
challenging economic times, it is more important than
ever for the business community to help policymakers
understand what it will take to strengthen the economy
and create jobs in Wisconsin. Listen to experts on current
issues, network with others from the business community,
then go to the Capitol and deliver your message to elected
officials ± businesses are hurting, families are hurting,
and it¶s time for leadership. Help deliver the message
that the business community is united and committed to
creating jobs and brighter futures for the citizens of
Wisconsin.
Dee Dee Myers and Dana Perino, former White House
Press Secretaries for the Clinton and Bush
Administrations, respectively, will give the keynote
address. Charlie Cook, a leading political pollster, will be
the opening speaker.
