Tackle Review
On arriving at the beach, the Autofeeder is taken out of the case
and staked into the sand. Once the hooks – each one held in its own
slot – has been baited, the start of the 50 metres of backbone/leader is
attached to the kontiki and walked down the beach.
A 200g breakaway weight is added to the line just ahead of the
hooks, and the kontiki launched, resulting in the hook section
automatically being slowly pulled off the trace board. When the hooks
are all gone, the back end of the trace section is attached to the winch
line (it pays to do this before starting the set!), which is then pulled off
the drum for the pre-programmed length of time.
Once the soak time is finished, the line is retrieved and the process
reversed. Because the hook section’s backbone is polyester cord, it
is neatly laid on the Autofeed tray, where rubber fingers protruding
through the base help hold the cord in place, so it can be easily
re-deployed next set.
The Autofeed trace board can be purchased separately and used
with any Seahorse kontiki. It is a safe, hands-free way of deploying a
set, especially if the fisher is alone.
Overview
I have followed the development of electric kontikis with interest,
having first fished a unit made from a length of plumbers’ PVC waste
pipe with an electric motor attached. The line was the conventional
stopped backbone on a kite-fisher’s beach reel – an adapted electric
fence reel. How things have changed.
When Phil Scherer demonstrated the S30 I was blown away by
the technology and simplicity of the S30 – it was ‘idiot proof’ in its
deployment.
Getting it to the fishing location was easy, due to its light weight
(although a beach trolley for the S30 is in the pipeline, Phil suggested
an existing model easily be modified to do the job).
For some, the $5000 price tag for the complete setup, including
trolley, might be a little off-putting, but like all things in life, you get
what you pay for.
So, for those who don’t like boating, but still enjoy fishing and
gathering kaimoana, the electric kontiki is a viable alternative.

the new SinkerLock sinker-clip system through

its paces and was duly impressed…
ith the need to occasionally travel between fishing
spots during the day, a simple yet effective system
for holding sinkers was something I had often
thought about, but never got around to devising.
Consequently, I’d resorted to lying my rods
down inside the boat to ensure my sinkers would not fall off edges
or start flying around whilst in transit.
The new SinkerLock system has provided me with a great way to
get around these issues. While I was a little apprehensive about
trusting a simple ‘clip’ design to stop my sinkers flailing around at
first, a few trips out have seen these worries disappear.
I fish the west coast, crossing the Manukau Bar to get out to my
most productive spots. So, after using the SinkerLocks successfully
a few times, I thought I’d put the device through a more intensive
test by crossing the Manukau Bar with them and the sinkers
attached. Despite a reasonable swell running at the time,
accompanied by a typical ‘washing machine’ action on the bar, the
SinkerLock system performed well, holding everything in place all
the way back to the beach.
Not only is SinkerLock effective, it also looks good, coming in
a range of colours to suit all anglers’ tastes. Even my girlfriend
likes the look of the new addition she can put on her rod – a pink
SinkerLock! Needless to say, she knows I won’t be stealing that one.

About SinkerLock
Manufactured from a tough synthetic material, SinkerLock
utilises a heavy-duty stainless spring to grip the rod’s fore-grip,
creating a space to place the sinker on the opposite side so
it can’t come loose and swing around dangerously when the

Tips for lures

has drilled a hole in one side of the clip. The bottom hook of any
lure can then be put through to hold it in place, also preventing
it from coming into damaging contact with the rod.
• Even without the hole, the Sinkerlock will still retain a lure safely
in the conventional manner, or the hook can be placed in the
small triangular gap in the side of the device.
• Avoid attaching hooks to rod guides, especially those with
inserts. The guide’s protective surface can be worn away or the
