Politics South Platte Sentinel Wednesday, July 2, 2014 Page 25 Sonnenberg discusses ballot issues Adamson-Mull-McMillen By Forrest Hershberger News Editor The November election could be busy for Colorado voters, regardless of the number of candidates. Jerry Sonnenberg, 65th District House representative and candidate for Senate District 1, spoke at the Logan County Lunch The Republican Way Thursday. Sonnenberg (R-Sterling) began by talking about the Environmental Protection Agency office in Denver and reports of papers flushed down the toilets and feces found in hallways. He said the real waste is when the agency decided to pay an expert to hold a meeting telling staff such practices are not proper. He went on to say there is the potential for 34 ballot initiatives in the November election, not counting any that may arise locally. Potential ballot questions include penalties for cannabis violations, firearms issues, marriage, GMO foods, horseracing and the oil and gas industry. Sonnenberg said Gov. John Hickenlooper has said Colorado has some of the toughest oil and gas regulations in the country. Sonnenberg said if Colorado has some of the toughest regulations, Hickenlooper needs to stand against further legislation on the oil and gas industry. He said as of June 24 Hickenlooper was still talking about a special session. Sonnenberg said he maintains that if a community does not want fracking and the oil industry in its area, it should not benefit from tax revenue. “To me, it is a fairness issue, and I’m willing to take it to the people,” he said. Sonnenberg said the Primary does show negative ads backfired in some campaigns. “I think people are tired of negative ads,” he said. “I’m hoping that’s the case.” Sonnenberg said polls are showing people are moving against the negative campaign efforts. He said people have a choice, more control and taxation, or limited government. Sonnenberg said the 2 percent cap on charges to energy bills because of renewable fuels will be more like 8 to 9 percent because President Barak Obama has stopped production of more coal-fire plants. He referred to what he called Sterling Housing Authority Equal Housing Opportunity Accepting applications for 1 bedroom unfurnished apartments Apply at office: 435 MacGregor Road Sterling CO 522-1852 This institution is an equal opportunity provider, and employer. There have also been efforts to limit when a person can use tanning services. “Whether you believe tanning beds are bad or not, shouldn’t that be your decision?” Sonnenberg asked Thursday. He said a true leader will admit when new information changes the way he or she votes. The legislator will publicly claim his mistakes and explain what needs to be done. At the end of the luncheon, Logan County Commissioner Dave Donaldson also talked about the “Restoring Colorado” effort. The proposal calls for restructuring the state legislature to be similar to the federal model. The House would be based on land area with each county having a representative and the Senate would remain based on population with 35 senators. He said the Restoring Colorado effort began in northeast Colorado. Correspondence from the organi zation includes a Haxtun mailing address.
