ANNUAL REPORT - Jimmie Heuga Center Endowment
ANNUAL REPORT JIMMIE HEUGA CENTER ENDOWMENT A WORD FROM OUR CHAIRMAN This year marks fourteen years since the creation of the Jimmie Heuga Center Endowment (JHCE). The original founders were a group of Jimmie’s supporters, including current board members Brock and Evalyn Byers, who felt that the Jimmie Heuga Center for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) needed a long-term plan for financial stability. The concept became reality and investment funds have been growing ever since. Today, we are actively managing the portfolio of funds, as well as seeking new contributions through directed fundraising events designed to expand awareness for the cause and inform people about the amazing programs which Jimmie pioneered. Richard Hicks JHCE Chairman Board of Directors Our mission to financially support the multi-day programs for people living with the chronic disease of MS requires new and engaging forms of fundraising to compete in today’s crowded market for charitable giving. The Endowment is a separate 501(c)(3) organization from Can Do MS (formerly The Jimmie Heuga Center). We function independently and complimentarily to assist the mission through strategic initiatives and campaigns. The funds raised annually are added to the investment accounts to help reach our payout threshold of $1 million. A percentage of proceeds above this threshold will be used annually to underwrite Jimmie’s unique programs which help improve the quality of life for people living with MS. This film was 3 years in the making, and started before Jimmie passed away in February of 2010. It now serves as both an educational testimonial on living with MS, as well as a permanent memorial to the legacy of Jimmie Heuga. Photo left: Jimmie Heuga 1943-2010. Photo below and on cover: Jimmie Heuga in sit ski with Milty (Mike Miltner) We hope you get the opportunity to see the film and renew yourself through Jimmie’s inspirational life. We keep in mind every day the way Jimmie chose to live by ‘taking the cards you are dealt and making the most of your situation’. Together we can keep Jimmie’s Legacy alive. Thank you for making a difference. Sincerely, Richard Hicks Chair, Jimmie Heuga Center Endowment -- 2 -- THE YEAR IN REVIEW MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS This is our first Annual Report, and we are excited to share it with you! Completed first educational and awareness tool, a documentary film − Can Do: The Legacy of Jimmie Heuga. Each year since our founding, we have depended on the annual generosity of a few key donors, as well as growth in investments to increase the fund. The last few years have been challenging for investment markets, and we responded by taking strategic steps to more actively grow the Endowment. These include gaining new contributions through specific fundraising campaigns and reducing operational costs. Our investment in an educational documentary is designed to expand awareness, educate the general public, and serve as a tool for contributions and gifts. The inspirational story of Jimmie Heuga captures the heart of audiences and will hopefully move them to support Jimmie’s cause. It is a story which shows by example how one person can impact the lives of many people. Held multiple screening events featuring Mike Marolt’s film Skiing Everest, to raise awareness and funds to support the mission. Created first brochure for JHCE − About the Film Maker, featuring Mike Marolt and his documentary film-making success. This leaflet is used to educate film viewing audiences on Mike’s personal relationship with Jimmie, and his appeal to support Jimmie’s cause. Lemon Avenue, #7579 Walnut, CA 91789 Email: [email protected] In the words of Jimmie Heuga . . . pick a fight, “any fight, cancer, homelessness, starvation, anything” and help “knock out all the terrible diseases and conditions” in the world . . . Help Keep Jimmie’s Legacy Alive Personal Profile It was during his childhood that Mike Marolt met the famous Olympic skier, 1964 bronze medalist Jimmie Heuga. Mike was impressed as much by Jimmie’s kind, compassionate nature as by his ski prowess. While still a teenager, Mike recalls when he and his father Max ran into Jimmie in the gallery at a world cup race, and were asked to help him get to his car by carrying him to the vehicle. That was the first time Mike had direct contact with the devastating effects of multiple sclerosis. This single experience led Mike to support the cause when asked by Jimmie to “fight the fight against MS” through participation in ski events which raised money for Jimmie’s MS charity. Jimmie challenged Mike to pick a fight, “any fight, cancer, homelessness, starvation, anything” and help “knock out all the terrible diseases and conditions” in the world. Today, Mike donates his time and talent in support of the Jimmie Heuga Center Endowment. This fund is dedicated to the long-term financial support of programs based on Jimmie’s MS care philosophy and provides a living legacy for the inspiration and dedication of Jimmie Heuga. http://www.jhce.org
