I n t r o d u c t i o n
The coast of province of Latina extends for
hundred kilometers from the Astura river on the
west side, to the Garigliano river on the est side,
which marks the border between lazio and
Campania and separates the province of latina
from the Caserta one. In the hundred kilometers
of coast there is a wonderfull combination
berween beaches and rocky promontories, which
creates a great variety of enviroments. The most
important coast centers are: Sabaudia, San Felice
Circeo,Terracina, Fondi, Sperlonga; Gaeta, Formia
e Minturno-Scauri, also to the Pontine
islands.The maritime area is the most important
tourist attraction of the province, because there
are the most important seaside resort of the
region and center of italy. The small but
beautifull archipelago of the Pontine islands is
located in the center of the Tyrrhenian Sea, is
formed from two groups of islands: North-West
Ponza, Palmarola, Zannone, Gavi (the last two are
uninhabited), South-East Ventotene e St. Stefano,
all of them are of volcanic origin. This origin
makes the landscape rich of extraordinary colors,
deep and trasparent water.

Holiday destination since ancient times the
province of Latina enrich the italian tourist scene
with unique landscape in the word as the gardens
and the ruins of Ninfa, the split mountain of
Gaeta, numerous imperial villas in addition to a
very specific collection such as the “PIANA DELLE
ORME” and the famous “ODISSEA DI PIETRA OF
SPERLONGA” authentic jewel of the Mediterranean. In the twentieth century Latina became the
first and most important out post for the
construction of the monastery , one of the best
example is the abbey of Fossanova, a splendid
example of Gothic-Cisterne architecture. It
becames so important to create around it a real
village. It was in Fossanova that St. Tommaso
D’aquino, during is trip to Lyon taken ill he died
on 7th march 1274. Another place of religious
importance is the sanctuary of St. Maria Sorresca
situated along the riverside lake of Paola which
owes its devotion to a miracle seen by medieva
fishermen. The last sanctuary built in the province of Latina is the side of the martyrdom of St.
Maria Goretti near Ferriere (Now Borgo Montello). The young girl died in 1902 and was declared
saint in april 27th 1947.
