HE 2008 SEASON REVIEW
Q B A DA M D I M I C H E L E & T H E O F F E N S E
In his third season at the helm of the Temple football program, head coach Al Golden
guided the Owls to their most wins in 18 years.
TU finished its 110th season of collegiate football
at 5-7 overall and 4-4 in Mid-American Conference play, tying for second place in the East Division. It is the first time in school history that
Temple has won at least four conference games
in back-to-back seasons.
The Owls did face adversity along the way,
falling in three contests on the very last play of

the game, two of which came in overtime. Temple faced six opponents that went on to postseason play. Led by All-MAC honorees DT
Terrance Knighton, C Alex Derenthal, NT Andre
Neblett, KOR Travis Shelton, and WR Bruce Francis, TU out-scored its opponents for the first time
in nearly two decades. The Owls also led the nation in kickoff return yardage as Shelton also finished first nationally.
In addition, Derenthal, Shelton and DE Junior Galette, LB Alex Joseph, and P Jeff Wathne
were named to Phil Steele Publications’ 2008 AllMid-American Conference Teams. Derenthal and
Shelton were named ECAC All-Stars. For the second consecutive season, PK Jake Brownell was
named to the 2008 Academic All-MidAmerican Conference Football Team as well as
the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Academic All-Area
Football Team.
The slogan for the 2008 Temple football
team was “Flip the Switch”, and Golden’s Owls
did just that in posting a convincing 35-7 season
opening win over Army at Michie Stadium. It
marked Temple’s first season-opening victory
since 2002. The Owls literally flipped the switch
on the Black Knights as they used key turnovers
and a 98-yard kickoff return by Jamal Schulters to
lead them to the win.
There was no controversial ending to this
year’s Temple-Connecticut matchup at Lincoln
Financial Field. But for the Owl fans that endured
over three hours of rain and wind as the rem-
134
nants of Hurricane Hanna pelted Philadelphia,
the result was the same--a disappointing and
frustrating 12-9 defeat. UConn’s Donald Brown
found the end zone from seven yards out in
overtime to lead the Huskies to a 12-9 victory
over the Cherry and White. On this day, it was
Hanna that clearly stole the show. Precipitation
began minutes before kickoff and did not subside, except for a brief respite late in the fourth
quarter.
For the second consecutive week, Temple
lost on the game’s final play. Senior quarterback
Drew Willy connected on a 35-yard touchdown
pass to Naaman Roosevelt as time expired to
lead Buffalo to a 30-28 win at UB Stadium in the
Mid-American Conference opener for both
teams. Willy engineered the improbable comeback by marching the Bulls down the field on a
five-play, 60-yard drive in just 38 seconds following a Temple touchdown. It appeared that
the Owls had won the contest when DiMichele
had led his team on a nine-play 74-yard scoring
drive, connecting with Francis to make it 28-24,
with 38 seconds remaining.
The heavily-favored #15/16 Penn State Nittany Lions proved to be too formidable for the
visiting Temple Owls in front of 105,106 fans at
Beaver Stadium in posting a 45-3 win. The
Cherry and White suffered an even worse blow,
however, as starting quarterback Adam
DiMichele left the game after the first series with
a shoulder injury. Despite the injury, the Owls

Turnovers proved costly for Temple in its
upset bid against two-time defending MAC
champion Central Michigan. The Chippewas
held off the Owls, 24-14 in front of a homecoming crowd of 22,114 fans at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. The Owls’ offense mustered 301 total
yards to the Chippewas 297, but four turnovers
proved to be the downfall for the Owls.
If the nationally televised football contest
would have ended after three quarters, the Temple faithful would have left Lincoln Financial Field
with a sour taste in its mouth. But a rollercoaster
fourth quarter, complete with big plays and
costly mistakes on both sides, included two
Cherry and White touchdowns in a 14-10 comefrom-behind victory over
Ohio University in a MAC
East showdown on ESPN2.

team, the Owls fell just short against the Kent
State Golden Flashes, dropping a 41-38 decision.
The loss all but eliminated the Cherry and White
from contention in the Mid-American Conference East Division race.
In Temple football’s biggest offensive explosion in nearly a decade, DiMichele threw for a
school record six touchdowns and passed for a
career-high 370 yards, while Francis caught a Div.
I-A school-record four touchdown passes as the
Owls hung on for a wild 55-52 victory over Eastern Michigan at Lincoln Financial Field. Seemingly
every major Temple offensive single game record
fell in a game that saw the two MAC teams combine for 854 yards and 107 points. DiMichele
broke school records for passing touchdowns in
a game (six) and set a career-high for passing
yards in game (370). Francis broke the Division IA school record and set a career-high with four
touchdown catches in one game.
It was only fitting that two seniors would
lead Temple football to its most successful season in nearly two decades. Senior Marcellous
Grigsby scored the first two touchdowns of his
career, and DiMichele rushed for two scores for
the first time in his brilliant career to lead Temple
to a 27-6 win over Akron at Lincoln Financial
Field on Senior Day. After Akron battled back to
tie the game on an Igor Iveljic 18-yard field goal
with 10:15 remaining, Temple scored 21 points
over the final eight minutes to close out the
game and its regular season.
For the second consecutive year, DiMichele
received the 2008 Owl Award as Temple’s most
valuable player at the annual football banquet.
A two-year team captain, DiMichele finished the
season, throwing 134-of-231 (58.0 percent) for
1,191 yards and 18 touchdowns in nine games.
DiMichele finished his collegiate career with
136
5,024 yards passing. Francis earned offensive
most valuable player honors. He became Temple’s Division I-A career leader in receiving touchdowns, finishing his career with 23. The Owls’
leading receiver with 687 yards on 45 catches for
a Division I-A school record 13 touchdowns,
Francis finished his collegiate career with a reception in a school record 38 consecutive games.
For the second consecutive year, Knighton was
the recipient of the defensive most valuable
player honor. Temple’s first First-Team All-MAC
honoree, Knighton ranked No. 2 in the MAC in
fumbles recoveries. One of two senior starters on
defense, Knighton helped the d-line lead the
MAC in red zone and third-down defense. True
freshman Kevin Kroboth received the special
teams’ most valuable player award. Seeing action in all 12 games, Kroboth was also a member
of four special teams’ units—kickoff, kickoff return, punt, and punt return. In the season finale
win over Akron, he received his first starting nod
at safety. His fourth-quarter interception, which
he returned 56 yards, was the first of his career.

GAME REC APS
Game 2: Conn. 12, Temple 9 (ot)
Game 1: Temple 35, Army 7
Sept. 6, 2008 • Philadelphia, Pa.
August 29, 2008 • West Point, N.Y.
The slogan for the 2008 Temple Football team is "Flip the
Switch', and third-year head coach
Al Golden's Owls did just that in
posting a convincing 35-7 season
opening win over Army at Michie
Stadium. It marked Temple's first
season-opening victory since a 347 win over Richmond in 2002.
The Owls literally flipped the
switch on the Black Knights as they
used key turnovers and a 98-yard
kickoff return by Jamal Schulters to
lead them to the win. That was the
formula Army utilized in defeating
Temple, 37-21, last season.
The Owls looked more like a
veteran squad from the outset.
After turning the ball over on their
first possession, the Cherry and
White defense stood strong, stopping the Black Knights on four
downs in the ensuing possession.
That would set the tone for the
contest.
The Cherry and White defense
stymied the Black Knights' newly
installed option-based offense all
game. It was the lowest point total
for a Temple opponent since 2004
while the defense forced three key
turnovers that led to 14 Owl
points.
Senior Tommie Williams made
the first big play for the Owls, stripping Carlo Sandiego at the 8 yardline and recovering the fumble.
Sophomore Marquise Liverpool
made two carries to move the ball
to the five yard-line, and DiMichele
found his favorite target, senior WR
Bruce Francis in the left corner of
the end zone for a touchdown.
On the Owls' next possession,
DiMichele directed the offense on
a 10-play, 71-yard drive, capping it
with a seven-yard TD pass to TE
Steve Maneri.
Freshman DE Morkeith Brown
made his presence known in his
first collegiate game. Brown, who
enlisted in the Army following high
school, stripped quarterback Carson Williams at the 17 yard-line on
the first play of the second quarter

and returned it for the score, making it 21-0 Owls.
The Owls were able to hold
the Black Knights scoreless at intermission courtesy of an interception
in the end zone by redshirt junior
Dominque Harris with 23 seconds
remaining in the half to thwart an
Army scoring drive.

On this day, it was Hanna
that clearly stole the show. Precipitation began minutes before kickoff and did not subside, except for
a brief respite late in the fourth
quarter.
The weather made the passing game an adventure, as exhibited by the subpar completion
percentages by the two quarterbacks. Redshirt senior Adam
DiMichele, who led Temple (1-1)
with 60 yards on the ground, connected on just 11-for-28 passes for
170 yards with two interceptions,
while UConn's Tyler Lorenzen was
10-for-22 for 86 yards and one
pick.
While TU utilized its twoheaded ground attack of redshirt
freshman Joe Jones (13 carries, 46
yards) and sophomore Marquise
Liverpool (nine rushes, 24 yards),
Connecticut went to Brown who
had 36 carries, including 17 of the
team's 34 offensive plays in the second half and overtime.
Brown was the only Huskie to
touch the ball in overtime, rushing
for 10, eight, and seven yards to
deflate the crowd. Just minutes
prior, redshirt junior Jake Brownell
had connected on a 21-yard field
goal to give TU a short-lived 9-6
lead in overtime.
Temple held a 6-0 lead until
13:18 in the fourth quarter when
UConn's Tony Ciaravino connected

The Owl faithful had an anxious moment with 6:26 in the
fourth quarter with the score tied
at 6-6. Golden decided to go for it
on fourth down from his own 34
yard line, but junior fullback Lamar
McPherson was stuffed short on a
run by inches. The play was reviewed to determine the spot, invoking unpleasant memories from
a year before for TU fans, but the
ruling on the field stood.

2008 Season Review
Game 3: Buffalo 30, Temple 28
Game 4: #16/15 PSU 45, Temple 3
Sept. 13, 2008 • Buffalo, N.Y.
Senior quarterback Drew Willy
connected on a 35-yard touchdown
pass to Naaman Roosevelt as time expired to lead Buffalo to a 30-28 win
over Temple at UB Stadium in the
Mid-American Conference opener for
both teams.
Willy, who completed 29-of-42
passes for a career-high 348 yards and
three touchdowns, engineered the
improbable comeback by marching
the Bulls down the field on a five-play,
60-yard drive in just 38 seconds following a Temple touchdown.
It appeared that the Owls had
won the contest when their senior
quarterback Adam DiMichele had led
his team on a nine-play 74-yard scoring drive. DiMichele, who completed
24-of-33 passes for a season-high
285 yards and three scores, found
Bruce Francis on a crossing pattern at
the five yard-line, and the senior wideout took it in for his second touchdown of the game, an 11-yarder, to
make it 28-24, with 38 seconds remaining.
Willy then quickly moved the
Bulls' downfield. Buffalo started at its
40 and following a 10-yard defensive
holding call, Willy found Roosevelt (8
catches, 138 yards) for a 20-yard reception to the Owl 30. Buffalo was
called on an illegal motion which set
up the final play.
With five seconds remaining,
Willy dropped back and launched his
pass. Roosevelt, surrounded by Temple defenders, went up for the ball
and came down with the game-winner.
Buffalo controlled the second
half, offensively, accumulating 285
total yards to Temple's 118. The Owls
defense had held the Bulls to just 10
second half points prior to the final
drive, with Jamal Schulters coming up
with a touchdown saving interception
on the first play of the fourth quarter.
The Bulls tied the game at 21 on
a six-yard TD reception by Bruce
Hamlin on their first drive of the third
quarter, then took the lead on a A.J.
Principle 25-yard field goal with 2:27
remaining in the game.
DiMichele accounted for a career-high 341 total yards.

Sept. 20, 2008 • University Park, Pa.
The heavily-favored #16/15
Penn State Nittany Lions proved to be
too formidable for the visiting Temple
Owls in front of 105,106 fans at Beaver
Stadium in posting a 45-3 win. The
Cherry and White suffered an even
worse blow, however, as starting QB
Adam DiMichele left the game after
the first series with a shoulder injury.
Despite the injury to DiMichele,
which occurred on a sack by Penn
State DE Aaron Maybin on the fifth
play of the game, the Owls were able
to stay even with the Nittany Lions
after 15 minutes. It marked the first
time all season that the PS offense had
not scored at least two first quarter
touchdowns.
Penn State broke through on the
second play of the second quarter on
a 20-yard TD reception by Brett Brackett. The Blue and White would score
on all five possessions of the quarter in
building a 31-0 halftime lead.
Senior QB Darryl Clark completed eight-of-nine passes for 152
yards and two TDs in the second
quarter alone. Clark, who was picked
off by Domnique Harris in the first
quarter, led PSU on scoring drives of
80, 68, 77 and 63 yards in the period.
Sophomore TB Evan Royster,
who had 73 yards on nine carries,
made it 14-0 with a 32-yard run. Clark
then scored on a draw play from 11
yards out before hitting WR Graham
Zug on a 17-yard TD reception to
make it 28-0. PK Kevin Kelly completed
the scoring for the half with a 44-yard
field goal as time expired.
On the day, redshirt freshman
QB Chester Stewart passed for 116
yards, completing 16 of 30 passes
with three interceptions. He was
pressured heavily throughout the
contest and was sacked six times for
a loss of 34 yards. He also ran for 51
yards on 11 carries.
The Owls marched down the
field on their opening possession of the
second half, as Stewart directed the offense on an eight-play 60-yard drive
with Jake Brownell converting a 25yard field goal to make it 31-3. Chester
connected with Jason Harper for a 28yard reception, the longest pass play

Temple's best offense on the day
came on special teams. Shelton had

2008 Season Review
Game 5: W. Mich. 7, Temple 3
Game 6: Temple 28, Miami (OH) 10
Sept. 27, 2008 • Philadelphia, Pa.
Homecoming was sweeter for
Sharon Hill, Pa., native and Western
Michigan head coach Bill Cubit
than it was for the Temple faithful
as the Broncos captured a 7-3 victory over the Owls at Lincoln Financial Field. It marked the first loss
in a Homecoming game for TU
head coach Al Golden in three tries.
There wasn't much offense
from either side in the penalty-ridden contest. Temple was held
without a touchdown for the second straight game, while WMU
needed just a Juan Nunez 30-yard
reception to beat the Owls.
Nunez's catch with 2:16 remaining in the third quarter capped
a nine-play, 77-yard drive in which
Bronco QB Tim Hiller completed all
five passes for 54 yards. Hiller connected on 26-for-42 passes for 252
yards to account for just about all
of Western Michigan's offense. The
Broncos were held to 36 yards on
the ground on 26 carries, a week
after rushing for 274 yards at Tennessee Tech.
Penalties at the most inopportune times cost Temple. In the first
half, a pair of holding penalties
brought back a junior Dominique
Harris interception that was returned to the WMU five-yard line
and a 50-yard freshman James
Nixon touchdown run.
In the second half, a sideline
interference call on the Temple
bench negated what would have
been a fourth-and-one for the
Broncos on their own 29-yard line.
Instead, the penalty resulted in a first
down and Western Michigan continued driving to midfield before
punting into the end zone to give
the Owls the ball on their own 20.
The Owls totaled 10 penalties
for 76 yards, while WMU had eight
penalties for 57 yards.
Temple's defense kept the
team in the game, even forcing a
WMU fumble with 2:34 to play that
gave the Homecoming crowd
hope of a comeback. But the
Cherry and White gained just two
yards in the series and gave the ball
back on downs.

and completed 10-of-20 passes for
60 yards.Nixon was a bright spot
for the Owls offense, compiling 53
yards on the ground on just three
carries.

Defense again led the way for
Temple, and senior wide receiver
Bruce Francis’ two fourth-quarter
touchdown receptions iced a 28-10
win over host Miami (OH) in front
of 17,295 fans at Yager Stadium.
Francis' first TD reception, a
43-yarder from redshirt freshman
Chester Stewart, was his also his
first catch in the game It not only
extended his school-record streak
to 32 games with a reception, it
also broke the backs of the RedHawks, who had scored 10
straight points after trailing 14-0 at
the half.
Junior DE Brian Sanford recovered a fumble on the six-yard
line on the ensuing possession and
Stewart hit Francis for a six-yard TD
reception, sealing the Owls' first
MAC win.
Stewart, making his second
start of the season, looked much
sharper than the previous week.
Despite being limited in practice
the entire week due to injury, Stewart completed 11 of
23 passes for 178 yards and three
touchdowns.
Temple's defense forced four
turnovers in the game. Jaiquawn
Jarrett, who led the team with 11
tackles (8 solo), made his first interception of the season. Terrance
Knighton, Jamal Schulters (10 tackles) and Brian Sanford each recovered fumbles.
The defense also accounted
for six tacklesfor-loss, six passbreak-ups and four sacks.
Freshman Kee-ayre Griffin,
who played the first five contests at
cornerback, moved to running
back and scored the first TD of the
game. His 25-yard run up the middle of the Miami defense put Temple in front 7-0 with 2:22 remaining
in the quarter.
The Owls made it 14-0 on
their opening drive of the second
quarter. The eight-play, 65yard drive was ignited by a 18-yard
Jason Harper run that included a
personal foul penalty on Miami that
gave TU a first down on the RedHawks 23. Stewart then hit Mar-

2008 Season Review
Game 7: CMU 24, Temple 14
Game 8: Temple 14, Ohio 10
Oct. 11, 2008 • Mt. Pleasant, Mich.
Turnovers proved costly for
Temple in its upset bid against twotime defending MAC champion Central Michigan. The Chippewas,
despite losing the league's top offensive weapon Dan LeFevour, held off
the Owls, 24-14 in front of a homecoming crowd of 22,114 fans at
Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
The Owls’ offense mustered
301 total yards to the Chippewas
297, but four turnovers proved to
be the downfall for the Cherry and
White.
Redshirt freshman QB Chester
Stewart, making his third start, was
picked off three times, including twice
in the second half. It was his final interception, by Bobby Seay at the start
of the fourth quarter that proved
costly. Senior QB Brian Brunner, who
replaced the injured LeFevour, made
the Owls pay, hitting Bryan Anderson
on the next play for a 37-yard touchdown. That made the score 24-14
with 14:07 to play.
Stewart completed 15 passes
on a career-high 32 attempts for 163
yards. He also rushed for 31 yards on
nine carries.
Senior wide receiver Bruce Francis made six receptions for 74 yards
and a touchdown while freshman
Kee-ayre Griffin scored for the second
straight game since moving over to
offense. He had 76 yards in 12 carries,
including a 29-yard run.
Brunner completed seven of 13
passes for 136 yards. Anderson had
his best game this season, with eight
receptions for 149 yards.
It took LeFevour just three plays
to put the Chippewas on the scoreboard as he hit Antonio Brown in the
back of the end zone for a 15 yard
touchdown, the first points allowed
by Temple in the opening quarter, to
make it 7-0.
The Chippewas made it 14-0
on their next possession, when
LeFevour again connected with
Brown, this time on a 14-yard strike
in the middle of the field, scoring on
the first play of the second quarter.
The Owls quickly responded as
Griffin opened the next drive with a
29 yard run to the CMU 26. Three

plays later, Griffin went off left tackle
for a 17-yard TD run. Jake Brownell’s
kick, however, hit the right upright,
making the score 14-6.
Temple's defense, as it has done
all season, came up big with just
under six minutes to play. Junior DT
Andre Neblett recovered a lateral by
LeFevour at the CMU 24 and returned it six yards to the CMU 18.

Oct. 21, 2008 • Philadelphia, Pa.
If Tuesday's nationally televised football contest would have
ended after three quarters, the
Temple faithful would have left Lincoln Financial Field with a sour
taste in its mouth. But a rollercoaster fourth quarter, complete
with big plays and costly mistakes
on both sides, included two Cherry
and White touchdowns in a 14-10
come-from-behind victory over
Ohio University in a MAC East
showdown on ESPN2.
The Owls offense struggled
mightily through three quarters in
the return of redshirt senior QB
Adam DiMichele, who had missed
the previous three games with a
shoulder injury. Temple compiled
just six total yards of offense in the
second and third quarters alone
and could not move the football.
During the University's "Owls
for the Cure" initiative benefitting the
Philadelphia Chapter of the Susan
G. Komen Foundation, the cure for
the Owls was a rejuvenated running attack in the final stanza led by
freshman Kee-ayre Griffin (22 carries,
career-high 85 yards).
Trailing 10-0, Griffin scampered for a 37-yard run down to
the eight-yard line with 11 minutes
remaining to ignite the Owls offense. The play gave life to a Temple crowd that had little to cheer
about to that point and the hosts
used the energy to put their first
points on the board. His one-yard
run with 10:53 to go cut the Ohio
lead to 10-7.
The Temple defense, which
kept the Bobcats off the scoreboard
for the final 37 minutes of the contest, then forced a three-and-out to
give the hosts field position on the
Ohio 46. The Owls drove to the
two-yard line but could not punch it
in as two incomplete passes and a
DiMichele run for a loss of five gave
senior Anthony Perlozzo a 25-yard
field goal attempt with 4:43 to play.
The La Salle transfer's kick was
barely wide left, deflating the crowd
and potentially killing the momentum that had clearly switched sides
over the previous nine minutes.

Ohio QB Boo Jackson fumbled the snap and TU senior DT
Terrance Knighton fell on the ball to
give the Owls the ball on the 20yard line with 4:39 left. Two runs by
Griffin left the Cherry and White
with a third-and-10 with under
four minutes to play and still trailing 10-7.
DiMichele connected with
senior WR Bruce Francis, for a 17yard reception down to the oneyard line. On second down,
DiMichele hit junior TE Steve
Maneri in the back of the endzone
to give the Owls their first lead of
the contest with 1:51 to play.

2008 Season Review
Game 9: Navy 33, Temple 27 (ot)
Game 10: Kent St. 41, Temple 38
Nov. 1, 2008 • Annapolis, Md.
Nov. 12, 2008 • Kent, Ohio
Navy overcame a 20-point
fourth quarter deficit with three
touchdowns over the final 9:16 to
force overtime, and then backup QB
Ricky Dobbs scored a one-yard
touchdown in overtime to give the
host Midshipmen a 33-27 win over
the Temple Owls.
Dobbs came into the game in
relief of starter Kaipo-Noa KaheakuEnhada, who was injured in the third
quarter. He completed five of six
passes for 87 yards and a touchdown,
and carried the ball 13 times for 47
yards and the game-winning score.
Temple senior QB Adam
DiMichele looked like his old self behind center, connecting on 21-of-28
passes for a career-high 340 yards
and three touchdowns, while WR
Bruce Francis made four receptions
for a career-high 135 yards. His two
touchdowns tied him as Temple's career leader in receiving touchdowns
with 18.
After a first half that featured
each team scoring on its opening
drive, but no other points, the Cherry
and White quickly took control of the
game in the second half. DiMichele
engineered a six-play, 76-yard drive.
The big play was to Francis, a 49-yard
TD to make it 14-7.
Two possessions later, DMichele
again found Francis for a 49-yard TD.
He faked a sneak on third-and-two,
and then dropping back to find a
wide-open Francis.
The Owl defense put the
clamps on the Navy offense, allowing only three first downs in the quarter. Jaiquawn Jarrett (10 tackles)
picked off Dobbs and returned it 42
yards. Freshman RB Kee-ayre Griffin,
who set career-high with 29 carries
and 87 yards, made the Midshipmen
pay, going around right end for a 16yard touchdown run to start the
fourth quarter. Jake Brownell missed
the extra point leaving the score 27-7.
Navy then mounted its furious
fourth-quarter comeback. First Dobbs
hit T.J, Thiel for a 22-yard TD, capping
a 10-play 78-yard drive. The second
score, a two-yard run by Eric Kettani
with 3:37 to play made it 27-20. Senior DT Terrance Knighton blocked

It was a record-setting night for
Temple players at Dix Stadium
Wednesday night, but for the team,
the Owls fell just short against Kent
State, dropping a 41-38 decision.
Trailing 41-38 with just over two
minutes remaining to play, the Owls
went for it on fourth-and-five from
the Kent State 49. Senior QB Adam
DiMichele, who completed 17 of 29
passes for 282 yards and three touchdowns, tossed a short pass to Marquise Liverpool. The sophomore back
was tackled just short of the marker,
giving the ball back to KSU on downs.
Temple got the ball back for one
final possession with 19 seconds remaining after forcing KSU to punt.
DiMichele hit WR Dy’Onne Crudup
on a hook and ladder play but the
ensuing lateral was picked off by
Monte Simmons to end the game.
The loss spoiled an amazing
performance by junior WR Jason
Harper. He made a career-high 10
catches for 209 yards and two touchdowns. The 209 yards are the second most receiving yards in Temple
history, and most by an opponent
against Kent State since Randy Moss
gained 216 receiving yards in 1997.
Senior WR Travis Shelton made
two kickoff returns, including a 92yard TD return, to improve upon his
career kickoff return yardage record.
Senior WR Bruce Francis made
just one reception, but it was a big
one. His 32-yard TD at the end of the
first half set the record for most career
touchdown receptions at 19.
The game started with Kent
State scoring touchdowns on three
of its first four possessions to take a
21-3 lead with just over 13 minutes
remaining in the half. On the second drive, senior DT Terrance
Knighton forced a fumble at the
Owl 19 that was recovered by junior LB John Haley.
The Owls kick-started their offense following an acrobatic interception by junior Dominique Harris that
gave TU the ball at the KSU 27. Two
carries by freshman Kee-ayre Griffin,
the last a 21-yard touchdown, made
it 21-10.

2008 Season Review
Game 11: Temple 55, EMU 52
Game 12: Temple 27, Akron 6
Nov. 22, 2008 • Philadelphia, Pa.
In Temple football's biggest
offensive explosion in nearly a
decade, senior QB Adam
DiMichele threw for a school record
six touchdowns and passed for a
career-high 370 yards, while senior
Bruce Francis caught a schoolrecord four touchdown passes as
the Owls hung on for a wild 55-52
victory over Eastern Michigan at
Lincoln Financial Field.
Seemingly every major Temple
offensive single game record fell in
a game that saw the two MAC
teams combine for 854 yards and
107 points. DiMichele broke school
records for passing touchdowns in
a game (six) and set a career-high
for passing yards in game (370). His
370 yards marked his 10th 200plus passing yardage games. It also
marked DiMichele’s fourth 300plus passing game, which ties the
school record.
Francis broke the Division I-A
school record and set a career-high
with four touchdown catches in
one game. He also set a careerhigh with nine receptions in a
game, extending his personal
streak of 37 consecutive games
with a catch and extending his
school record to 23 receiving TDs in
a career. His four touchdowns on
the day gave him 13 for the season, which also ties a Temple Division I-A record.
EMU QB Andy Schmitt rewrote Temple’s opponent records
for passing attempts in a game, (76
= just seven shy of the NCAA
record) and completions in a game
(50). Both were new EMU single
game records as well as his 484
yards passing.

Nov. 28, 2008 • Philadelphia, Pa.
It was only fitting that two
seniors would lead Temple football
to its most successful season in
nearly two decades. Senior Marcellous Grigsby scored the first two
touchdowns of his career, and senior Adam DiMichele rushed for two
scores for the first time in his brilliant
career to lead Temple to a 27-6 win
over Akron at Lincoln Financial Field
on Senior Day.
The Owls completed their
season 5-7 and in second place in
the Mid-American Conference East
Division at 4-4. It marked the first
time in school history that Temple
has won four conference games in
consecutive seasons.
After Akron battled back to tie
the game on an Igor Iveljic 18-yard
field goal with 10:15 remaining,
Temple scored 21 points over the
final eight minutes.
DiMichele, who led the Owls
with 50 yards rushing, completed
15-of-30 passes for 220 yards.
Grigsby had 11 carries for 39 hardfought yards.
It was the Temple defense,
however, that stole the show. The
Owls picked off three passes, two
coming in that final stretch. They
also blocked a field goal attempt
and held the high-scoring Zips to a
season-low in points.
Temple finally opened the
scoring with DiMichele running it
in from four-yards out on a third
down play with 9:08 remaining in
the second quarter. Jake Brownell
missed left on the conversion attempt making it 6-0. The drive
was aided by a 16-yard John Stec
punt that gave the Owls the ball
at midfield.
On the Owls' final possession
of the half, DiMichele, who had
46 rushing yards in the first half,
used his legs to avoid a sack and
scrambled for 16 yards and a first
down on a third-and-10 play
from midfield.

He then connected with freshman RB Kee-ayre Griffin for a 12yard reception to the Akron 22. The
drive stalled on the 14 yard-line
when freshman Chester Stewart
fumbled an exchange on a thirdand-two. Brownell missed left again
on a 34-yard field goal attempt with
33 seconds to play, keeping the
score 6-0 at intermission.
