Moshi Moshi President’s Corner Cathy Tennant Akemashite Omedetou Gozaimasu! The year has certainly started off with some challenging weather! On some days, it's been difficult for some to even shovel their way out of the house. The perfect time to experience wintery Alberta weather by enjoying the beautiful vision of snow covered trees (from inside), relaxing with a good book, bundling up to watch a video, or catching up on the news of Edmonton snowfall while sunbathing in Hawaii. For the more adventurous there is skiing, hiking and, oh yes, curling! a buffet table of delicious food. It was really missed but hopefully many of you will be able to join us for the upcoming Karaoke Concert, Sukiyaki Dinner or Hinamatsuri. In 2011, the very popular Japanese Language classes will continue and some new programs like “cooking classes” will be introduced. We have received requests for other types programs as well, so we have enclosed a “Survey” with this issue of the Moshi Moshi to help plan additional programs. Please help us by taking a few minutes to fill it out and drop off at the office, or mail in with your membership form. Names are not necessary unless you would like us to contact you to discuss further. EJCA is looking forward to an exciting year and on behalf of the Board, I wish you all a healthy, happy and peaceful New Year! This year, the snow was piled so high in the EJCA drive and parking area that we had to cancel the New Year's Potluck. With the help of many members and through email, we seemed to have contacted just about all who were planning to attend … not such a simple task because there was no pre-registration list of names. Thanks to all who were part of the telephone fan-out process. The New Year's party is always such a fun social highlighted by NOTICE TO: MEMBERS Edmonton Japanese Community Association FROM: EJCA BOARD DATE: January 17, 2011 RE: Vote - Amendment to the Bylaws Saturday March 19, 2011 5:15 p.m. In the current bylaws, the fiscal year of the Edmonton Japanese Community Association ends on August 31st of each year (under “AUDITING 2.”). This makes it extremely difficult to have the financial records completed and audited before the Annual General meeting which is normally held between mid-September and mid-October of each year. For this reason, we propose that the bylaws be amended to change the year-end of the Association to June 30th of each year. This change will result in an audited financial statement being presented at the Annual General meeting. It is proposed that the bylaw read: “AUDITING 1. The books, accounts and records of the Secretary and the Treasurer shall be audited at least once each year by a duly qualified accountant or by two members of the Association elected for that purpose at the Annual Meeting. A complete and proper statement of the standing of the books for the previous year shall be submitted by such auditor at the Annual Meeting of the Association. The fiscal year of the Association shall end on June 30th in each year.” The vote on this amendment will take place on Saturday March 19th at 5:15 p.m., prior to the Sukiyaki Dinner. We require a quorum of at least 25 members for the vote so we thank you, in advance, for your cooperation in attending. Respectfully, Edmonton Japanese Community Association Board January - February 2011 3 Moshi Moshi NAJC President’s Message - November 2010 Ken Noma I am honoured to have been elected as President of the NAJC at the Ottawa AGM held this past October and I look forward to updating the readers on the activities of NAJC and its member organizations. In my election speech to the delegates, I identified the following as my priorities during my tenure: Human Rights The struggle for human rights is a cornerstone of our Nikki history and the reason for the founding of the National Association of Japanese Canadians. Early pioneers like: Tomikichi Homma, Ryuichi Yoshida, John Kumaji Hihei, Etsu Suzuki, Toshiko Tomura and others fought for equity in the work place. Those who volunteered to fight in the two world wars were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for the franchise. Thirty-eight percent of Nikkeis, aged 15 and over, reported in the 2006 Canadian census that they experienced either racial discrimination or unfair treatment based on their ethnic and racial background - the NAJC must be there, ready to advocate for them. Maclean's magazine, in their University Issue of November 10nd ran an inflammatory and racist article entitled “Too Asian?” The NAJC has challenged the magazine's stereotype of Asian Canadians and their attempt to portray us as a homogeneous group. We have joined a coalition of concerned organizations demanding an apology from Rogers Communications. The NAJC Human Rights Committee, under Vice-President Lillian Maguire, has posted a letter to Maclean's requesting an apology and a request to implement and publish an anti-racism editorial policy. Local Chapters The survival of the NAJC is directly tied to the well-being of the chapter organizations. Each chapter faces its own unique challenges and the tireless volunteers in the smaller communities struggle daily to provide relevant programming that will retain current members and attract younger volunteers. The NAJC will continue to direct a portion of its limited resources towards Community Development grants under the leadership of Angela Freeman. Heritage The NAJC will support initiatives that will record, preserve and exhibit the archival history of Japanese Canadians; the aging Nisei population makes this a race against time. We need to develop more educational resources on our history for use in the classroom and aggressively engage in the vetting of textbooks for historical accuracy and bias to ensure the history of the Nikkei is not misrepresented or deliberately omitted. The Ottawa AGM passed the Lakehead Chapter's resolution by creating a permanent Heritage Committee. Financial Sustainability After the historic Redress Settlement, the Japanese Canadian 4 January - February 2011 Redress Foundation distributed over $17 million dollars to community groups, individuals and institutions. The late Roy Ito calculated that the initial seed money stimulated community fundraising and personal donations which raised the total community fund to $83 million dollars. The NAJC annual budget comes from investment income generated from a permanent sustaining fund. The current recession has substantially decreased our operational funds and threatens our programmes and activities. A Task Force on Financial Sustainability, led by Mike Murakami, will explore ways to generate revenue. I will be meeting with those community groups who benefitted directly from the Redress Foundation Grants to discuss reciprocal fundraising opportunities. In addition, we must explore ways to engage the ijusha and youth with the NAJC and find new revenue to support the creative and performing arts. The Endowment Fund, which makes financial awards in the Spring and Fall annually, is one vehicle that we have used for community outreach. For those individuals and communities looking for funding support, I encourage you to download an application form at www.najc.ca. Lastly, Muriel Kitagawa in her book, 'Letters to Wes' wrote: “Whatever comes, whatever happens, we will forge a record of dignity to leave as a proud legacy for our sons and daughters.” A strong and vibrant NAJC is necessary for us to continue to honour and build upon this record of dignity which Muriel spoke about, that Monday evening as her train left Vancouver for the internment camps. Edmonton Food Bank accepts Empty Egg Cartons Did you know that one of the easiest donations you can make to the Edmonton Food Bank is empty egg cartons? I found this out last summer; the Food Bank gets eggs in large flats and needs normal egg cartons of any size (6, 12, 18) to repackage for distribution to people in need. Although I felt a little silly the first time I dropped some off, because it seems strange to give empty containers, every Food Bank drop-off location I’ve been to has always been very happy to receive them, fire halls, Heritage Festival, etc. John Priegert, EJCA Centre Manager, has offered to accept them at the Centre and drop them off if it’s easier for peole to bring them to the Centre Brenda Madsen Moshi Moshi Culture Programs Committee Report and Request for Demonstrators/Instructors Sanae Ohki In February 2010, the EJCA Board created a new committee named “Outreach Programs”. The role of the Outreach Programs was to coordinate Japanese Culture programs including Japan Today (Introduction of Japanese culture to Junior High School students), Explore Japan (Introduction of Japanese culture to High School students), Japanese Language classes to EJCA members, Culture presentations/workshops as requested by Canadian organizations, Kimono dressing services, Japanese Language tutoring, and other related services. From February to December 2010, the committee coordinated: • 33 “Japan Today” school visits where over 1,400 students came to EJCA • one “Explore Japan” event where 185 students experienced Japanese culture for one full day • three school visits where over 200 students had workshops in Calligraphy, Karate, and other culture events • one origami workshop for 24 University faculty and staff members • six people received Kimono dressing services • Japanese Language classes held in winter, spring, and fall 2010, with an enrollment of over 20 student in the current Winter 2011 session • Kurimoto Japanese Garden - Origami workshop, Koi Nobori, display of dolls, and flower arrangement. • Translation services • Private Japanese tutoring services Many EJCA members participated as presenters, demonstrators, instructors, and assistants in 2010 to such valuable activities. Thank you very much! EJCA has a rich resource pool of skilled people. At the November 2010 meeting, the EJCA Board decided that the “Outreach Programs” committee would be renamed as “Culture Programs” committee. The name was changed to more accurately reflect the fact that some of the programs addressed requests from the community in general (“community outreach”) while others met the expressed interests of the EJCA membership (e.g. Japanese language classes). The “Culture Programs” organization will enable EJCA to efficiently and responsively plan and deliver programs and services, both externally and internally. The committee would like to ask EJCA members to register as resource persons so that when a culture program request is received, the committee has sufficient resources available. Most of the service providers will receive an honorarium depending on the nature of services. The areas that require resource persons are: origami, tea ceremony, Japanese musical instruments, calligraphy, Japanese dance, flower arrangement, martial arts, cooking, kimono dressing, interpretation/translation, and Japanese language teaching. Please e-mail to [email protected] or telephone at 780-4593862 and register your name and specialized areas. If you registered for the last year, I would like to hear from you again and update your registration. 780-459-3862) EJCA Tea Ceremony Sets Displayed at the Stony Plain Multicultural Heritage Centre Have you been to the Stony Plain Multicultural Heritage Centre? Introduction of Cook books in the Library, review by Cathy Tennant Japanese Folk Cooking History, Japanese Cooking for Health, Simple Comfort Cooking From Dr. Oz to the nightly news, the Japanese diet has been promoted as the way to add years to your life. Smaller portions, less emphasis on meat (the Western diet staple) and a variety of different vegetables all presented in an eye-appealing manner seem to be the way to a healthier life-style! This month a variety of new books on Japanese Cooking arrived. Just looking at the delectable pictures is an adventure in itself (even without trying any recipes)! The explanations and sharing of personal histories and stories make a number of these books more than just “cook” books. In the “Folk Art of Japanese Country Cooking” Gaku Homma shares stories of growing up in Akita prefecture, a rural part Japan. He explains the historical and cultural aspects of the ingredients, and the traditional Japanese approach to diet. He gives a unique perspective on how the preparation of Japanese dishes is a result of customs and techniques developed over thousands of years. Detailed sketches of proper preparation techniques and even instructions on 'how to make tofu' make this book an educational experience, even for the “non-cook”. Gaku Homma, an internationally respected Aikido instructor, founded Nippon Kan Cultural Centre in Denver, Colorado, that houses the largest traditional Aikido dojo in the Rock Mountain region. He is also the former owner of Domo, one of Denver's finest restaurants. A completely different approach is taken in “Home Cooking with Japan's First Lady”. In it, Miyuki Hatoyama shares recipes for all occasions, including some of her family's favourite “comfort” dishes. Some are dishes inspired by other countries like “Prosciutto and Creamed Cheese Salad” with an injection of “Japan” through ingredients usually associated with Japanese cuisine. Having a reputation for entertaining without the stress of difficult preparation, her recipes are delicious with a modern twist, showing that cooking doesn't have to be complicated! Miyuki Hatoyama, the wife of Yukio Hatoyama, Japan's 93rd Prime Minister was born in Shanghai and raised in Kobe, Japan. In her early twenties, she moved to the U.S. where she merged American party recipes with her own unique taste. After marrying in the U.S., she returned to Japan 10 years later to support her husband's political career. The new, beautifully photographed cookbook “Just Add Shoyu” from the Toronto Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre is now in print. Mike Murakami, a former EJCA President now living in Toronto, shared the following: “The aim of 'Just Add Shoyu' is not only to showcase Japanese Canadian recipes but also to capture the stories of JapaneseCanadian families and how food continues to play an important role in their lives”. And those who know the Murakami family will be interested to know that Aiko has a couple of stories in the book too. The book will be available for $39.95+ shipping ($29.95 for 3 or more copies) and can be ordered through [email protected]. If there is sufficient interest, EJCA will consider a bulk order. Please let the office know if you are interested in ordering (prepayment will be required if a bulk order is made). Visit the library or view the website for a complete list of books. 8 January - February 2011 Moshi Moshi VOLUNTEER AND DONOR APPRECIATION EJCA's activities have been successfully carried out with the help of many volunteers and a variety of donations. The EJCA Board members think it is very important to recognize volunteers and donors in a consistent manner. So this year, volunteers and donors for each activity will be reported in the Moshi Moshi as an independent article. If your name is missing from the list, please inform Cathy Tennant so it can be noted in the next Moshi Moshi. Please help us to maintain an accurate list.
