Mason” that the two actors, Raymond Burr and Robert Benevides first met. Their friendship
grew and advanced as their mutual interest in the knowledge of the cultivation and hybridization
of orchids developed. Their mutual hobby began to grow in importance to them and the next
logical step was to make it into a commercial venture.
At the same time, Benevides had become Executive in Charge of Production for Mr. Burr’s very
successful and long (8 years) running television series, “Ironside”. The two men purchased an
island in Fiji where they raised coconuts and cattle and helped bring up the standard of living for
the Fijian people who lived on the island.
In 1976, Robert Benevides’ father, attracted by the beauty of the Dry Creek Valley and the
special qualities of land with its productive soils, purchased portions of the existing Raymond
Burr Vineyard Estate. Years later, Robert and Raymond planted vines on their lovely estate in
1986. Their first wines were made in 1990 under the direction of John Pedroncelli, who together
with his brother, Jim, owned the Pedroncelli Winery off Canyon Road.
The Raymond Burr label started in 1998. A reasonable price was set for the Cabernet Sauvignon
and Chardonnay wines, and over the years, prices for their Estate wines have remained the same
as the original releases.
In 2005, a local winemaking star, Phyllis Zouzounis, took over winemaking duties for the
Raymond Burr Wines. She remained with Robert through the last crush in 2013. Phyllis has her
own successful label, Deux Amis Wines.
The Raymond Burr Wine Club has approximately 800 members. Wines are sold direct to
consumers. Approximately 2,500 cases of wine are sold annually through the tasting room and
wine club.
A decision was made in 2013 to make that year the last year that wines were to be made under
the Raymond Burr label. After reaching his 85th birthday, Robert Benevides decided to sell his
magnificent vineyard estate.

drains. A total of 14.42 acres were planted to Cabernet Sauvignon (clone 7), Chardonnay (Wente
and Dijon clones), Cabernet Franc and 4 Portuguese Port varieties (Tinta Cao, Tinta Madeira,
Touriga Nacional and Sousao).
The original rootstock for all varieties was AXR. Subsequent plantings in 1998, 1999, 2000 and
2002, because of phylloxera, used rootstock 110R and 1103.
In 2005 an acres of Cabernet Sauvignon was removed and replaced with one acre of Cabernet
Franc on 110R rootstock. In 2006 2 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon were removed and replaced
with 1 acre of Malbec and 1 acre of Petite Verdot. Both were on 110R rootstock.
Spacing was accomplished according to “General Viticulture” page 244. Vines were planted 6
feet apart and rows were spaced 12 feet apart. Trellising for the Chardonnay has a system of
quadruple cordons and for the reds, double cordons. Wires are in place on all varieties to support
the canopy. All vines are on a drip irrigation system.
Two 10,000 gallon concrete tanks, in the middle of the vineyard, supply all of the vines with
water. Two wells are in place. The well presently in use, with a 10 horsepower submersible
pump, needs to be rehabilitated.
Originally the 4 Portuguese varieties were planted in a field blend in equal amounts. But over the
past 28 years the Sousao has been slowly replaced with Tinta Roriz because the Sousao did not
ripen along with the other varieties.
The present two year contract on the Cabernet Sauvignon is for a maximum of 25 tons @ $2,500
per ton. The contract on the Cabernet Franc is for a maximum of 12 tons @ $2,600 per ton. The
contracts for the Malbec (7-9 tons) and Petite Verdot (3-4 tons) are @ $1,800 per ton.
Offered at $ 6,295,000
