Welcome to

teeped in history, Hessenland Inn marry’s two intriguing
stories. The first story belongs to farm itself and dates back
to the late 19th century when it was owned by the Bedard
Family who were one of the first families to settle in the area.
The original Bedard farm house still stands today and is a
ttached to the Inn’s main building. In 1998 the Bedard farm’s
barn was torn down to it’s original foundation and carefully
restored to what is today, The Coach House. This rustic yet
elegant barn like setting has become one of the most unique
reception venues along Ontario’s West Coast.
T
he second story began in Germany, in the province of
Hessen more then thirty years ago and belongs to Ernst
and Christa Ihrig. They dreamed of moving to Canada to open
a business which combined their passion for hospitality with
their hobby of horse breeding. Hessenland today now boasts
expansive gardens, dining rooms, accommodations and the
unique Coach House reception hall. While no longer in the
business of breeding Hanovarian Horses, Hessenland’s barns
offer boarding to other horses, who are most frequently seen
grazing in the 30 acres of pastures and fields surrounding the
Inn.

oday the Inn is run by the second generation of Ihrig’s.
Frank (the eldest son of Ernst and Christa) has taken
over the roll of head chef and along with is wife, Liz, manages
the day to day operations as the Inn’s Keepers. In a continued
passing of tradition, Frank and Liz’s son Sebastian now climbs
the trees and runs through the barn growing deeper in love
with this home of Hessenland the way his father did so many
years ago...

Hessenland, Frank Ihrig is the
second generation owner and
head chef at the Inn. Frank
studied Hospitality at the
University of Guelph and then
moved to Europe to obtain his
chef ’s papers at the Kempinski
Hotel Gravenbruch in Frankfurt,
Germany. Upon completion of his
apprenticeship, Frank travelled,
working in some of the world’s
finest kitchens including Chateau
Whistler, Greystone Country Club, a winter season in Switzerland,
and a half year in Australia before finally returning home to Huron
County where he settled down and took over ownership of the Inn
he knew and loved. Franks passion is for European and local fare
focusing on only the freshest ingredients.
Our Facilities
The Garden Room offers panoramic views of Hessenland’s
manicured grounds.
The Garden Room Bar and Lounge is a great place to relax and
unwind while enjoying a cocktail or brew.
In the summer months enjoy outdoor dining while sitting pool
side on the Garden Room patio.
The Historic Coach House offers the perfect space for your
holiday event, wedding or business function.
