The highlights of this day will include a coat drive for veterans, hand flags at the finish line, hot cider, cookies, and chili-in-a-bag! Register by October 30th for guarantee of a long-sleeve shirt. For registration information: www.mowspokane.org When Don Vogel was diagnosed with terminal cardiovascular cancer, he was advised to stop volunteering. When asked by Hospice House of Spokane about his last wishes, he said he wanted to deliver one last time to “his” seniors. Don teamed up with Meals on Wheels Spokane and helped deliver meals to those in need, despite doctors’ recommendations. As a long-time volunteer, we were honored that Don continued to have a desire to help us serve, even in his final days. Though he passed away a few days after his final delivery, Don’s legacy of service lives on in our work at Meals on Wheels Spokane today! Thank you to our sponsors: We love our volunteers! How to Get Invoved: ) We have over 800 volunteers that donate over 12,000 hours per year! ...And we always love more! ) If you’d like to help, email: [email protected] Making Brighter Birthdays Photo courtesy of KREM-TV Since our volunteers are sometimes the only people our seniors see during the day, we began a birthday bag program to show them we care. Ed, a 62-year-old senior we visit, has lung cancer and has been with our program since February. On his birthday, he received a birthday bag and said, “I would like to thank all the staff at Meals on Wheels Spokane for remembering my birthday. Thank you so much!” For a list of items we could use, please visit: www.mowspokane.org Subaru “Share the Love” Event Local dealership gives back to Meals on Wheels Spokane We are proud to partner with Subaru of Spokane for the “Share the Love” event once again this holiday season. Recognizing that if they were alone at home, they will be alone in a care facility, we began our Friend to Friend program in 2014. Volunteers adopt a senior and visit them at least once a month. If you would like to become a friend to one of our seniors, please call our Meals on Wheels office at: 509-456-6597. Cotton Classic 2014: The 2014 Cotton Classic Charity Golf Tournament & Social benefiting Meals on Wheels Spokane was a big success. The two-day event netted more than $43,000 for Meals on Wheels Spokane! To put it in perspective, that will provide roughly 11,000 meals to homebound seniors in the Spokane area. Fantastic! Everyone seemed to really enjoy our new tournament venue - the Spokane Country Club. They were terrific hosts! We hope to be there for years to come. Also, big thank you to all our tournament partners, including Northern Quest Resort & Casino our presenting sponsor. Northern Quest also hosted the Cotton Classic Social on the eve of our tournament. It was very well attended and we look forward to making it even bigger and better next year. As always, suggestions for both the social and golf tournament are welcome and appreciated. And of course we are always looking for new major sponsor partners. If your company/organization would like to participate in supporting our very impactful cause shoot me an email at [email protected] or contact Karen Richardson at Meals on Wheels Spokane at 509-232-0864. Thank you again for YOUR support of Meals on Wheels Spokane and have a great fall! Elva had dug her heels in and refused any outside help, including hospice care. After talking with her over the phone and visiting with her in her home, we convinced her that by allowing us to provide a hot meal every day, we would be able to sleep not worrying about her health. She finally agreed, saying, “I’m only doing this so you can sleep!” Thank you, Elva! Event Calendar Join us for one or all of our fundraisers this season!
