he spectacle of travel across both Central and South America is hard to match. It has some of the most
beautiful scenery in the world including the gigantic waterfalls of Iguazu, the intricate ecosystem of
the Amazon Rainforest, expansive stretches of virgin beaches, glaciers and pristine lakes, and the
longest mountain range on the planet: the majestic Andes. Much of this continent is still untouched by
development, making it possible to go off the beaten track and be immersed in unspoiled landscape.
T
The culture is also very diverse, with some people still living in the same tradition as their indigenous
ancestors, while others from Africa, Asia, and Europe, have brought their own way of life and have added
to the many layers of culture. As a result of this dynamic population influx, each country has its own
distinct flavour and colourful traditions.
Therein lies a dilemma for the visitor - what should you see? where should you go? Colletts Travel has an
excellent network of travel experts that handle our ground arrangements throughout Central and South
America so we are able to design and deliver complex tours that run smoothly and enable our clients to
explore these countries in true style and luxury. Here are some popular itineraries:

Haciendas of the Yucatán
Graceful living amid the heritage
properties of the Starwood Luxury Collection
he Starwood Luxury Collection comprises just 80
properties worldwide that represent the very
finest properties from the world’s most
respected hotel group, Starwood. Of these, five are
located on the Yucatán Peninsula of south-east Mexico.
T
When sisal was pushed aside in favour of cheaper and
stronger synthetic materials most of Mexico’s
haciendas were abandoned and fell into ruin and the
clutches of looters who quickly stripped doors, tiles,
furniture and fixtures.
These hotels are housed in what were once the grand
homes of the owners of sisal (and sugar and cattle)
farms and factories who made fortunes supplying
natural plant fibres to the rope and twine making
industry in the late 18th and early 19th centuries—not
unlike Mexican versions of the southern plantations in
the United States.
A few haciendas have been saved and meticulously
restored, however, including the five that make up
Starwood’s haciendas collection. Each has been
brought back to life and infused with modern
amenities (big-screen TVs, gourmet restaurants, epic
swimming pools) which their original owners could
never have imagined.
Hacienda Temozon, Temozon Sur
This stunning 17th century hacienda has married the colonial
atmosphere of a former sisal plantation with the luxury of a private
retreat, and is ideally situated to visit the delightful town of Merida
and the important Mayan site of Uxmal. The 26 individually
furnished rooms have high ceilings, private terraces and in some
cases a small private swimming pool. An excellent restaurant
overlooks the breathtaking gardens, whilst within the extensive
grounds of the estate are a large swimming pool, a Hol Bé spa
offering a range of traditional Mayan treatments, tennis courts,
paths for walking and riding, and the restored sisal factory.
12
Haciendas of the Yucatán
Hacienda Uayamon, Campeche
A beautifully restored late-16th century hacienda situated
in beautiful grounds close to the walled city of Campeche.
It is the perfect base for exploring the southern Yucatan.
The 10 delightful bungalow rooms and two colonial suites
are spacious and elegantly furnished, combining
contemporary design with original features. Facilities
include an excellent restaurant serving regional and
international dishes, a stunning walled swimming pool, and
a Hol Bé spa offering traditional Mayan treatments.
Hacienda San José, Tixkokob
Located 24 miles from Merida, this historic 19th century
plantation house was little more than a shell before
sensitive restoration transformed it into a luxurious
boutique hotel. It is the ideal place to relax after visits to the
magnificent sites of Chichen Itza, Uxmal and Dzibichaltun.
Each of the 15 elegant rooms and suites (which include
private terrace and plunge pools) overlook the old
courtyard and gardens, have original high ceilings and tiled
floors and are beautifully decorated.
Hacienda Santa Rosa,
Santa Rosa
A 45 minute drive from the international airport of Merida,
the state capital, lies Hacienda Santa Rosa de Lima. Santa
Rosa, a small Hacienda in the Heart of the Yucatán Peninsula
recreates the belle époque of the Mexican southeast. The
11 rooms and suites are gracefully furnished with exquisite
detailing. All accommodations are located in the main 18th
century building, surrounded by beautiful gardens.
Hacienda Puerta Campeche, Campeche
Located in the old city of Campeche and not technically a
hacienda this spectacular property is actually a collection of
restored 17th century historical houses that span nearly an
entire city block. Many of the original walls and lovely old tile
floors have been retained in the 15 gorgeously renovated and
spacious rooms that feature 18-foot ceilings with exposed
beams and rafters. It is the unusual indoor-outdoor swimming
pool that most impresses, surrounded by half-tumbled ruins
and winding through the property like a snake, with inviting
hammocks suspended over the water.

Central America “a la Coppola”
Remote luxury in Belize and Guatemala
he famous film director, Francis Ford Coppola,
has developed a penchant for relaxed
hospitality and is particularly well-known these
days for his inspired hotel collection. Three of these
hotels are located in the varied yet stunning natural
surroundings of Belize and neighbouring Guatemala.
T
It is a story that began in the early 1980’s when Francis
Ford Coppola was led to Belize, having become
infatuated with the jungle when making Apocalypse
Now. Having discovered an abandoned, remote
property within a 300 square kilometre tract of
pristine pine forest, Coppola renovated Blancaneaux
Lodge for family holidays. As family and friends
18
welcomed it so much he decided to open the
doors to guests to come and stay and so began
Coppola Resorts.
Today, Coppola Resorts offers an award-winning trio
of eco-friendly luxury retreats providing a very
international and discerning clientele the opportunity
to both explore fascinating regions and relax. Coppola
Resorts gives a glimpse into the values that Coppola
holds dear – family, fun, adventure, conservation and,
in time-honoured Italian tradition, great food and
wine. These elements can be seen throughout each
property, woven into the landscape, creating a
personal Coppola connection for all to enjoy.
Belize & Guatemala
Blancaneaux Lodge, Belize
Blancaneaux Lodge offers unprecedented luxury, on a wild and
remote hillside. The Lodges’ 20 villas and cabanas are dotted
alongside the meandering Privasson River within the oldest of
Belize’s national parks, the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve.
Here the water is pure enough to drink and the waterfall pools
are perfect for back-to-nature bathing. Explore the forest on
horseback, visit ancient Mayan ruins or just hop into a
hammock and watch the hummingbirds plundering the
colourful flora.
Turtle Inn, Belize
Brightly coloured hammocks slung between slanted palm trees,
thatched beach huts and the sun-sparkled waters of the
Caribbean are at the heart of Turtle Inn. Situated at the narrow
tip of a 26 mile peninsula – to the east, the Caribbean Sea filled
with coral cayes and the Belize Barrier Reef with its world class
scuba diving and snorkelling, to the west, the Placencia Lagoon
with views of the Maya Mountains. Here Coppola built 25
Balinese style thatched roof cottages and 4 signature villas, each
with a sprinkling of glamour for the perfect refuge.
La Lancha, Guatemala
With parakeets for background music and howler monkeys for
alarm clocks, Coppola’s Guatemalan outpost, near the magical
Mayan ruins of Tikal, La Lancha, is located in one of the world’s
wilder and most beautiful spots. Hidden by rainforest on the shores
of Lake Peten Itza, the ten naturally built casitas offer spellbinding
views of the glassy waters and greenery of Guatemala, as well as a
back-to-nature vibe that is tinged with luxury.

Peruvian Treasures
Breathtaking combinations of landscapes and cultures laced with ancient
mysteries makes Peru the most exciting South American destination
ew countries can offer the spectacle and
geographic diversity of Peru. There is a rich
history with mysterious pre-Columbian
cultures reaching back 5,000 years and the more
recent legacy of Spanish colonial rule. Consider the
sharp juxtaposition of the narrow and arid coastal
plains, the mighty wall of the towering Andes
Corridor behind which stretch the tropical forests
of the upper Amazon basin and its mighty
tributaries. Then add to this the sights and sounds
of modern day Peru and you will have the measure
of a truly remarkable destination that should be
experienced at least once in a lifetime. And if this
be the case ...then do it in style with Orient-Express!
F
The vibrant and gastronomically rich capital of Lima
offers a fascinating international gateway and
20
visitors should consider a short stay in town at the
Miraflores Park before embarking on a domestic
flight to the colonial city of Cusco, the gateway to a
splendid combination of Peruvian experiences.
The cultural climax to the trip introduces a
spectacular network of properties owned by
Orient-Express in and around Cusco and the
Urubamba Valley beginning with a stay at either
Hotel Monasterio or the newly opened Palacio
Nazarenas, both in Cusco, and culminating in a
mountain-top stay at the uniquely positioned
Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge. Travel up the
valley on Orient-Express’ luxury train, Hiram
Bingham, stopping off for some magical days at
the Hotel Rio Sagrado.
Peruvian Treasures
Miraflores Park Hotel, Lima
Set in one of Lima’s most fashionable areas, the Miraflores Park
Hotel takes you straight to the heart of all that's best about this
great capital city. Renowned for its beautiful garden location
beside the Pacific Ocean, it has breathtaking views out to sea.
Palacio Nazarenas, Cusco
Palacio Nazarenas takes hospitality in Cusco to a higher realm. A
painstakingly restored private residence-turned-convent, it blends
original features including Inca walls and colonial frescoes with 21stcentury indulgence including a unique open-air heated swimming
pool and a renowned spa. The hotel offers each guest the services of
a butler 24/7. He or she will help you to create your own travel
programmes, introduce local experts and even show you how to
make your own herb-based cocktails in your room.
Hotel Rio Sagrado,
Urubamba Valley
Nestled in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, surrounded by ancient
remains, is this tranquil, rural retreat. Yet close by is all the colour
and vigour of contemporary Peruvian life: local markets,
adventurous activities and the rugged trail to Machu Picchu.
Hotel Rio Sagrado has a new pool and a spa overlooking the
Urubamba river and the mountains of the Sacred Valley.
Machu Picchu
Sanctuary Lodge
One of the world’s most fabled ancient sites, Machu Picchu is a
place of most wonder and awe when the daytime crowds have
left. Wreathed in the mists that add mystery to its spectacular
sunrises and moonlit nights, to sleep at the only lodge beside this
mountain citadel is an all-time travel great: pure adventure.
Hiram Bingham
The Hiram Bingham luxury train links Cusco and Machu Picchu, via
the dramatic valley of the Urubamba River. It departs later in the day
than most other services, allowing passengers to enjoy the citadel in
the late afternoon calm. The journey can be made either as a day
excursion, or with an overnight stay at Machu Picchu Sanctuary
Lodge. The trip includes appetisers, brunch, live music and a gourmet
dinner on board, as the train travels through spectacular and everchanging scenery. A guide is available to accompany passengers.

Chiclayo
Trujillo
The Inca Empire was so large that it
reached the current countries of
Colombia, Ecuador, Chile, Bolivia and
Argentina, and had Cusco (meaning
"navel of the world" in Quechua) as its
capital city. The Empire came to an
end with the arrival of the Spanish
conquistadors in 1532, who
established the vice royalty of Peru,
lasting for almost 300 years until 1821
when Peru got its independence,
giving birth to the Republican era.
Nowadays, Peru shares with the world
its magic, from the lost city of Machu
Picchu - one of the seven New Wonders
of the World - to the floating islands of
Uros in Lake Titicaca to the thick green
jungles of the Amazon. Peru is a land of
mystery and constant discovery, with
countless archaeological sites, its
enigmatic Nazca Lines which can only
be seen from the sky, and the most
varied and unforgettable landscapes.
Lovers of the outdoors will find much
to love about Peru: white capped
mountains, dense rainforests, the
deepest canyons and a number of
pristine, well-kept national parks.
Lovers of culture will likewise find
themselves right at home because of
the well known hospitality of the
people and unique museums, historical
sites, ancient ruins and fine restaurants
that can be found all over Peru.
Peru is a country full of colour and
mixture of cultures in which history
and modernity coexist in total
harmony in its architecture, cuisine,
arts but most importantly, in its
people who keep traditions alive.
Meet the people, Experience the
adventure, live the traditions, delight
your palate, encounter the past,
embrace nature, feel the mystery...
Discover the intensity of Peru.
Trujillo & Chiclayo
Chiclayo and Trujillo share in common the Moche and Chimu cultures, creators of
the great Chan Chan citadel and the Tomb of the Lord of Sipan.
The tomb of this very important Mochica warrior priest reveals amazing gold and
silver objects of incredible value. Chan Chan, in Trujillo, is the largest mud-brick
citadel built by a pre-Hispanic civilization in the Americas; it was the religious and
administrative castle for the Chimu Culture until its conquest by the Incas. UNESCO
listed it as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1986.

Peruvian Treasures
Machu Picchu
Four hours by train from Cusco, these beautifully preserved ruins
consist of an enormous stone city hidden by a spectacular mountain
plateau, overlooking the deep canyon of the Urubamba River. Machu
Picchu, a mystic place of worship, was also a spot for star-gazing and
the private hacienda of the Inca Pachacutec.
Colca Canyon & Arequipa
Puno & Lake Titicaca
Declared a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO, this
southern Peruvian city is filled with beautiful convents,
temples and old grand Colonial houses. Arequipa also
holds a gastronomic wealth, a mixture of native products
of the ancient Pre-Columbian cultures and modern day
culinary techniques. Additionally, the world’s deepest
canyon, the Colca offers astonishing views that should not
be missed.
According to Inca mythology Manco Capac and
Mama Ocllo, children of the Sun, emerged from the
depths of Lake Titicaca and gave birth to the Inca
Empire, cradle of this civilization. The city of Puno is
located on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the highest
navigable lake in the world and source of life for the
towns existing on the area. Puno is a festive town
with many colourful village celebrations. The
inhabitants of the Uros, one of the oldest native
communities of America, live today on floating
islands much as their ancestors did thousands of
years ago.
Cusco & The Sacred Valley
Located in the southern part of the Andes, Cusco is Peru´s main tourist
destination and one of the most important in the Americas. Known by
the Incas as the “home of gods” Cusco became the capital of one of the
largest pre-Columbian empires: the Tahuantinsuyo. Just an hour’s drive
from Cusco, the Sacred Valley of the Incas or Urubamba Valley, is a
setting of picturesque communities, impressive terraces and several
important archaeological sites. The valley has been the storehouse for
agricultural products for the city of Cusco since Inca times. Its mild
weather and particular geography make it ideal for outdoor sports.

holiday spot for jetsetters and home to many surfers
though with more than twenty beaches of varied surf,
Buzios has something to offer to everyone.
