- submitted by P.J. Book & Carla Kruml One of the many annual destinations on
the road to graduation can be found in the
Bishop Flavin Gym with the celebration
of Pius X Awards Night. Students are
recognized for a variety of honors ranging
from subject specific awards to recognition of academy appointments. This time

in our wonderful students. God blesses us
each year with amazing families, students,
and community support and we love sharing the stories of our school.

Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus,
You have said that your followers must be a light to the world.
Light propagates itself and dispels darkness.
It sows rays of joy and hope.
It is life-giving.
Help me, Lord, to be a light to this world,
so that my life radiates your message of love, hope, and joy.
May I be a beacon leading those who seek truth to You.

On Thursday, May 12, Governor Pete Ricketts honored 21 Nebraska seniors who earned a perfect score on the ACT or SAT
college preparatory exams. Pius X graduating seniors Liam
Kruse and Independence Talken were among the students honored for their perfect score on the ACT exam. The governor applauded the honorees for their achievement and urged them to
stay in Nebraska, or return here, when they enter the workforce.
A perfect score on the ACT is 36 while it is 2,400 on the SAT.
The ACT is the more common exam taken in Nebraska; SAT
exams are required more often by schools on the coasts. Of the
1.9 million students who took the ACT, less than one-tenth of 1
percent earn a perfect score. Nationally just 1,598 students
earned perfect scores last year. Nearly 1.7 million students nationwide took the SAT, including more than 700 in Nebraska.
Just one Nebraska senior earned a perfect score this year.

Paul Styron is the first Pius X student who will graduate from
high school as part of the TeamMates program. Paul and his
TeamMates mentor, Jerry Ogren, were named the May 2016
TeamMates of the Month. They started meeting when Paul was
in 7th grade at St Joseph school. When Paul transitioned to high
school at Pius X, he and Jerry became the first TeamMates
match at Pius. Even after graduation, Jerry and Paul will keep in
touch.
After high school graduation, Paul plans to attend Southeast
Community College in the fall to take classes that he will later
use for an academic transfer to UNL. He is currently interested
in Engineering.
Paul was the recipient of a TeamMates scholarship donated by
the Ethel S. Abbott Charitable Foundation.

WORDSTRUCK & Book Release Party
Mr. Bolt is Back!
- submitted by Susan Kelly -

After a three year break, the Pius LPAC stage was graced by
multiple Mr. Bolt contestants on Thursday, April 28. Mr. Bolt is
a Pius X men’s talent show sponsored by Student Council.
This year, the performances ranged from singing to dancing and
even a World War II power point. Arguably the most unique
talent was Alex Kerr’s skill of crushing multiple apples…with
his biceps. Along with judging their talent, the contestants were
asked questions ranging from “What would be the first thing you
would like to ask God in heaven?” to “What would you do with
the prize money if you were to win?” Audience members were
also entertained by the outstanding emcees Makayla Krings,
Riley O’Meara, and Whitney Tran.
On Thursday evening, May 12, students
gathered for the annual Wordstruck and
Book Release Party in the Pius Commons. Poetry, Prose, Short Stories, and
Artwork were shared over sandwiches
and cookies. Contest winners were announced and students enjoyed open mic
readings of their works.

A year of planning precipitated the Choir Department trip to
New York City. These photos allow you to travel with 120
members of our student body, faculty, and family to a variety of
locations and experiences that brought education and adventure
alive for the students of Pius X. The photos captured a trip to
Ellis Island, Holy Mass, a visit to the Statue of Liberty, and a
live performance of Les Miserables. Mr. Todd Krier, his staff,
and sponsors reported that numerous strangers and event officials repeatedly complimented our students on their exuberance,
joy, and reverence at stops and events throughout the weekend.

Campus Clean-Up Thank You
- submitted by Georgia Miller -

Volunteers donated their time and talents on Saturday morning,
April 16, during the Pius X spring grounds clean-up. Volunteers
worked on cleaning the flower beds in front of the school and
the interior courtyard. The beds were raked, bushes trimmed,
flowers cut back, and a new layer of mulch added. Another opportunity to assist in cleaning our campus and beautifying our
grounds will be held in the fall, so please keep an eye open for
that announcement.

AP Biology Class Takes Field Trip To Omaha Zoo

Pius X senior Alyssa Jensen and her family worked with members of the Star City Llama and Alpaca 4H Club to facilitate a
visit with Pius X AP Biology students on Tuesday, April 19.
Three llamas and two alpacas dropped by to give students an
opportunity to learn about the animals' behavior and adaptations.

On Wednesday, April 27, students from the AP Biology Class,
along with their instructor Mrs. Susan Kelly, visited the Omaha
Henry Doorly Zoo. As part of the animal behavior requirement
for AP labs, students toured the zoo with an emphasis on the
gorilla and gibbon habitat, insects in the butterfly/insect pavilion, and multiple phyla on display in the aquarium. They were
also able to see the six African elephants that arrived at the zoo
from Swaziland a few months ago.
With a mission of conservation, research, recreation, and education, the Omaha Zoo and Aquarium is nationally renowned for
its leadership in animal conservation and research. In August of
2014, travel website TripAdvisor named Omaha’s zoo the
world’s best zoo. The Henry Doorly Zoo is currently four years
into a 10-year, $174 million master plan. Phase 1 of African
Grasslands — the largest project in the zoo’s history at $70 million and more than 28 acres — began last spring.
A special thank you to Pam Beiermann and Thad Aerts who
attended as chaperones.

Thunderbolt Coach Announces Retirement;
Replacement Named

April 22, 2016
Dear Parents,
It appears that next year our enrollment will
be around 1275 students, up 50 students
from this year. It is wonderful … we are
bursting with faith.
After several meetings with Bishop Conley,
Monsignor Perkinton, and others, we are
purchasing two portables (each portable has two classrooms).
We will have them ready for August of 2016. This final decision
was made in the last two weeks.

Ray Forycki, Lincoln Pius X boys’ head basketball coach, met
with his players Wednesday, May 18, to announce his retirement. Athletic Director Tim Aylward took the opportunity to
promptly name Forycki’s replacement, Pius X assistant coach
Brian Spicka.
During the last game of regular play this past season, Forycki
reached the milestone mark of 300 wins. Forycki became the
head basketball coach at Pius X in 1994 after serving for 8 years
as an assistant coach for the Thunderbolts. Earlier this spring,

“Our youth program is flourishing and the positive commitment
from our parents is as always very strong,” Forycki added. “I
will miss all of the people who care so much about helping our
students and athletes. I will miss the players the most. We shared
a common bond and worked very hard to learn about life. Pius X
was my dream job. I have been living the dream.”
Spicka began coaching at Pius X in 1999 as the assistant JV
coach, and was named the freshman boys’ basketball coach the
following year. He joined the Pius X faculty in 2002 to teach
World History, and in 2008 was named the assistant varsity
coach.

“I am very excited to be succeeding Coach Forycki as head
coach of the Pius X boys’ basketball team,” Spicka said. “Ray is
a great coach, mentor, and above all a tremendous person that
has helped me grow as a coach and a person. I look forward to
the challenges ahead with the great support of the Pius X coaches, administration, parents, and alumni.”

BOLT 2016 Coordinating Committee

We want to thank all of you for your generous support of Pius X
High School and BOLT 2016 “Unveil the Potential”. Our event
was a great success and could not have happened without you.
There are many volunteers who gave of their time, talent, and
treasure to make this event the success it is today including parent volunteers and numerous students who sold lottery tickets,
conducted the bid run, assisted with clean-up, and sang at the
Mass prior to BOLT. The support from the Pius X High School
faculty and staff was tremendous as well.
One of our goals is to provide a great environment for all of our
students by aiding in renovations of the physical facility of Pius
X High School and support of the Pius X Booster Club. Keeping
this in mind, of the proceeds of $280,000, two-thirds will finance
improvements to the physical facility and one-third will fund the
Booster Club’s special projects.

“The Matt Grosserode Scholarship is a very prestigious award
for a senior member of the football team,” Athletic Director Tim
Aylward stated. “The past winners have always been proud to be
the recipient and have found the monetary gift to be very helpful. It has been, and will continue to be, a great way to remember
Matt Grosserode, who as a football player always gave his all.”
Matt was a junior in college at Iowa State University at the time
of his death on August 6, 2003. He was an honor student at Pius
X, a standout football player, and a member of the track team.
After graduating from Pius X, Matt went on to play football at
Iowa State University earning Academic All Big 12 Honors.
Matt lived his life being faithful to God, loving to his family,
and loyal to his friends.

$74,000 to students for the 2015-2016
school year. Establishing a Named
Scholarship gives you the opportunity
to honor and remember loved ones
while actively supporting Pius X’s quality, Catholic education.
Once a Named Scholarship is created, the funds are invested in
the Foundation’s endowment with the income from the investment being used to help pay a portion of students’ tuition.
Named scholarships last forever and serve as a permanent memorial. This means you can financially assist current as well as
future students for many years to come. As the scholarship balance increases, so does the amount of aid students receive.

or computer access are encouraged to contact the Guidance Department at (402) 488-0931 or the Pius X Foundation at (402)
488-1046. We are here to help.
There is a $30 application fee when submitting the online application. Each family is asked to pay half of this cost or $15,
which can be paid by credit or debit card. Pius X will cover
the remaining $15 fee. The majority of the scholarships are
based on financial need.
Parent(s) or guardian(s) wanting to be considered for tuition
assistance based on financial need must complete the FACTS
Grant & Aid assessment section of the online application. They
will need their 2015 Income Tax Return to complete the application. All information provided is kept confidential. Upon completion, parents/guardians will mail or fax the supporting documentation to FACTS. The tax information needed to verify the
application will be shown in the FGAA Checklist that is found
online. If someone is only applying for nonfinancial need scholarships, this portion of the application does not need to be filled
out.
Note: Award decisions are not made by FACTS, but by the
Pius X Scholarship Selection Committee in June 2016.
Thank you.
