Pius X graduating seniors Liam Kruse and Independence Talken were among the students honored for their perfect score on the ACT exam. The governor applauded the honorees for their achievement and urged them to stay in Nebraska, or return here, when they enter the workforce. A perfect score on the ACT is 36 while it is 2,400 on the SAT. The ACT is the more common exam taken in Nebraska; SAT exams are required more often by schools on the coasts. Of the 1.9 million students who took the ACT, less than one-tenth of 1 percent earn a perfect score. Nationally just 1,598 students earned perfect scores last year. Nearly 1.7 million students nationwide took the SAT, including more than 700 in Nebraska. Just one Nebraska senior earned a perfect score this year. Paul and his TeamMates mentor, Jerry Ogren, were named the May 2016 TeamMates of the Month. They started meeting when Paul was in 7th grade at St Joseph school. When Paul transitioned to high school at Pius X, he and Jerry became the first TeamMates match at Pius. Even after graduation, Jerry and Paul will keep in touch. After high school graduation, Paul plans to attend Southeast Community College in the fall to take classes that he will later use for an academic transfer to UNL. He is currently interested in Engineering. Paul was the recipient of a TeamMates scholarship donated by the Ethel S. Abbott Charitable Foundation. Mr. Bolt is a Pius X men’s talent show sponsored by Student Council. This year, the performances ranged from singing to dancing and even a World War II power point. Arguably the most unique talent was Alex Kerr’s skill of crushing multiple apples…with his biceps. Along with judging their talent, the contestants were asked questions ranging from “What would be the first thing you would like to ask God in heaven?” to “What would you do with the prize money if you were to win?” Audience members were also entertained by the outstanding emcees Makayla Krings, Riley O’Meara, and Whitney Tran. On Thursday evening, May 12, students gathered for the annual Wordstruck and Book Release Party in the Pius Commons. Poetry, Prose, Short Stories, and Artwork were shared over sandwiches and cookies. With a mission of conservation, research, recreation, and education, the Omaha Zoo and Aquarium is nationally renowned for its leadership in animal conservation and research. In August of 2014, travel website TripAdvisor named Omaha’s zoo the world’s best zoo. The Henry Doorly Zoo is currently four years into a 10-year, $174 million master plan. Our event was a great success and could not have happened without you. There are many volunteers who gave of their time, talent, and treasure to make this event the success it is today including parent volunteers and numerous students who sold lottery tickets, conducted the bid run, assisted with clean-up, and sang at the Mass prior to BOLT. The support from the Pius X High School faculty and staff was tremendous as well. One of our goals is to provide a great environment for all of our students by aiding in renovations of the physical facility of Pius X High School and support of the Pius X Booster Club. Keeping this in mind, of the proceeds of $280,000, two-thirds will finance improvements to the physical facility and one-third will fund the Booster Club’s special projects. It has been, and will continue to be, a great way to remember Matt Grosserode, who as a football player always gave his all.” Matt was a junior in college at Iowa State University at the time of his death on August 6, 2003. He was an honor student at Pius X, a standout football player, and a member of the track team. After graduating from Pius X, Matt went on to play football at Iowa State University earning Academic All Big 12 Honors. Establishing a Named Scholarship gives you the opportunity to honor and remember loved ones while actively supporting Pius X’s quality, Catholic education. Once a Named Scholarship is created, the funds are invested in the Foundation’s endowment with the income from the investment being used to help pay a portion of students’ tuition. Named scholarships last forever and serve as a permanent memorial. This means you can financially assist current as well as future students for many years to come. As the scholarship balance increases, so does the amount of aid students receive. Tuition assis- X Foundation. tance will be awarded in June and recipients notified prior to the Vince Aldrich Memorial Scholarship start of school in August. The application can be accessed through the Pius X website at www.piusx.net [Development/Support - Scholarships - Click here to apply for tuition assistance/scholarships]. The deadline to apply is Monday, May 30. The application is available in both English and Spanish. Parents or students who need assistance due to language barriers or computer access are encouraged to contact the Guidance Department at (402) 488-0931 or the Pius X Foundation at (402) 488-1046. We are here to help. There is a $30 application fee when submitting the online application. Each family is asked to pay half of this cost or $15, which can be paid by credit or debit card. Pius X will cover the remaining $15 fee. The majority of the scholarships are based on financial need. Parent(s) or guardian(s) wanting to be considered for tuition assistance based on financial need must complete the FACTS Grant & Aid assessment section of the online application. They will need their 2015 Income Tax Return to complete the application. All information provided is kept confidential. Upon completion, parents/guardians will mail or fax the supporting documentation to FACTS. The tax information needed to verify the application will be shown in the FGAA Checklist that is found online. If someone is only applying for nonfinancial need scholarships, this portion of the application does not need to be filled out. Note: Award decisions are not made by FACTS, but by the Pius X Scholarship Selection Committee in June 2016. Thank you.
