Mr. Dyjak had flown to the lake in the early afternoon to carry passengers in his ship and cruised over the lake several times prior to the forced landing. “I took off from the farm on the hillside west of the lake,” said Mr. Dyjak.”Upon reaching an altitude of about 200 feet the motor suddenly cut out. At that time he was well out over the lake and saw at once the impossibility of trying to find a landing place on the surrounding shore which is for the most part heavily wooded. I glided the ship in as near to shore as I thought I safely could, slipped it down and pul1ed the nose up just before striking the water. I had loosened the safety belt and as soon as the plane hit, I found myself under the water. I dove out and climbed upon the wing of the plane which was still afloat and called for a boat.” The calls were unnecessary since two motor boats headed for the scene at once, followed by numerous canoes and rowboats. The plane had fallen in about nine feet of water and approximately 350 feet from the shore. The accident occurred at 5:15 p.m. Needless to say, the crash caused no little The plane pictured above is the same make and model as Dyjak’s plane amount of excitement to the Oil City airport had been reserved for instruction in it. Canadohta Lake BreezeSummer 2015Page 7 Fish for Free Day by PA Fish & Boat Commission 5th Annual Light up the Night Boat Parade May 24, 2015 July 4, 2015 Come one Come all, Light up your boat or light up the shore line, in memory of those we’ve loved & lost and say goodbye to 2015 summer Starts at Sundown September 5 Canadohta Lake BreezeSummer 2015Page 8 So many people have met at the lake, fell in love and lived a full rich life. Some settled here and centered their lives and their families on the lake they love. The Seidler’s are one of those lucky couples, they spent years enriching not only their lives, but the community they lived in and loved, a life filled with many memories and accomplishments. This love story started in the 1950’s and is still ongoing. They told Billie Jo Easterlin and me that “We have had a Good Life; so many Friends and Experiences” Olen was born and raised in Union City, for sixteen years of his life he worked for Union Service Gas Station, (now the Kwik Fill Gas Station). He was born in the little corner house (that’s still there) on Kilburn St, at age four his family moved to 20 Gillette St. When he was fourteen years old, his father built the grey house (now white) on the corner between the hardware store and township building. Olen graduated in 1954 from Union City High School, in 1956 was drafted into the Army. There were seventeen young men from the area that went to Indian Gap, just two didn’t stay. Olen and a football star from Waterford, they were rejected for ”Flat Feet”. That was the standard reason given at that time. One of the officers told Olen - You only weigh 110 pounds how far do you think you can walk with a 120 pound pack on. Sally was from Youngstown Ohio and like many of us, spent her summers at the lake. Sally’s mother owned five cottages by the old Pierce’s Store; they were on the hill towards the lake, in the Ruggles Park Allotment. When she was in 8th grade she cashed in some savings bonds, purchased a cotton candy machine and opened a booth in the far left of Ruggles Park by Bartlett’s Donuts. Her Mom had a booth with popcorn and other stuff. The picture here is of her in eighth grade at her “Kotton Kandy” booth. Sally later moved her business to Canadohta Lake Park, between the Shooting Gallery (the Wellman Boys worked the shooting gallery) and a ride the Flying Cages. She remembers how good the owners Max & Hope Lee were to her. If it was raining or something that she did not open the booth, Max would not charge her rent, she sold cotton candy and candy apples. When they sent out food for their employees on Sundays – they always included a meal for Sally. She eventually sold the cotton candy machine to Max and Hope Lee. I remember it being on the porch of the Beach House with the hard ice cream, in use for many years. One day Olen went down to his Mom’s sister’s cottage for a picnic, a distant relative was there, he was volunteered to take her roller skating. It was his first time at the rink, a chance moment in time that would forever change his future. Olen became the floor manager at the rink when he was 17, he played the music and announced the skates, and he continued working there for nine or ten years. Sally was always at the rink skating, one night Sally went home all upset, she told her Mom she hated the floor manager, he had made her sit down for skating too fast. Olen said one of things he did when there was a girl he wanted to talk to, was to accuse her of skating too fast. He’d give them a warning first then have them sit down and he would go talk to them. Olen doesn’t remember when this happened but Sally and her Mother both remember it. She was smoking mad, he’s been telling people (jokingly) she has made me pay for it ever since. Olen found out that Sally’s Mother did not like red heads, (he was a red head) and she did not want Sally to marry him. But he persevered. They chose September 21st 1957 to get married at the rink, the place they met and loved. Sally’s relatives on her mother’s side were strict Catholics and told her you don’t get married unless you are in a church. Olen and Sally told them they were bringing the church to the rink. Everyone except Reverend Lyman from the Union City United Brethren Church was on skates. The reverend had planned to be on skates but changed his mind the night before as some of his flock didn’t like the idea. Even their two year old niece and their ring bearer was on skates. Sally has always said she wanted to “Get married in her skates, and be buried in her skates.” Lots of people where there for the wedding, many they didn’t even invite, the rink still had the awnings that opened in the front, where many stood to watch, some came inside and sat, they didn’t care. People thought getting married on skates was crazy back then. The rink was owned by the Phyllis & Willis Mall; the Mall’s had given them the keys to the Roller Rink and went on vacation that weekend. Olen and Sally had previously met some friends who turned out to be E.P. Lee’s relatives and they came in from New Jersey for the wedding. Phyllis Mall was Hope Lee Newland’s sister, Hope was married to Max Lee (E.P. Lee’s son), small world. Their wedding reception was held at two of the large cottages on the hill overlooking the lake, that Sally’s Mom owned, each cottage had five bedrooms for all the Canadohta Lake BreezeSummer 2015Page 9 family to stay. This picture was from their wedding at the rink. In 1957 there were only a handful of families living year round at the Lake, four of them in Ruggles Park were the Hodgins, Lloyd’s, Henry’s & Seidler’s. Melody Lane was a soda fountain/teen dance club, open in the summer (May through September) located on Lake Rd in front of the Skating Rink. They purchased Melody Lane in 1960 from original owners (who had it built) Joe & Henrietta Miller, the Catholic Sunday Masses were held there before the Chapel was built. You had to have a membership to get in, if you acted up they took your membership away, it cost 10 cents to get in each time. No one had cars back then, they all walked from everywhere, and when skating let out everyone went to Melody Lane. Sally took their son with her when she opened, and had a playpen in the corner, the kids would take him and play or dance with him. They would lay him on the pinball machine and he would try to catch the balls. Melody Lane burnt in 1968 the fire was found to be electrical. It was closed at the time for the winter, the electricity was on because they kept the freezers running. It was snowing and windy, Penelec had changed the wire, it had a swag in it, and was blowing in the wind it arced and started the fire. A neighbor down behind the skating rink was at his sink getting a drink of water, saw it blowing in the wind, when he looked up again it was on fire. Olen was the areas Justice of the Peace from 1958 until 1975 when JP’s were converted to District Magistrate’s; he was a Notary Public from 1958 until 2014. They have lived at the lake since they married. First just off of Lake Rd on Ash St, across from Pop Cornish, in the little white cottage, their front porch was the Notary & JP’s office. When they started a family they then built the house they now reside in on Lake Rd. Olen also managed an Eckerd’s Drug Store until 1975. He kept busy with all his work, but found time to give back to the community in which he lived. Sally started the Canadohta Canadettes with Diane Mason (Owner of the Canadohta Roller Rink) in the 1960’s, their uniforms color was Orange. The group went to Niagara Falls, marched all around NY and many other places; they were unique because they were on skates. The members were girls from ages two to twenty-two. Sally said if they didn’t have enough girls for the parade they would put her son and Diane’s in front holding the banner instead of the girls. Sally’s sister-in-law Shirley started the Union City Kidettes their colors were red white and blue. In the 1960’s Olen started Canadohta Lake’s Fire Police, he recalls once he went down to Centerville for training and put the tank and mask on, went in the house, got in the living room and the tank was empty. He had inhaled so much smoke that for 3 or 4 years afterwards he couldn’t stand the smell of smoke. The Fire Police started with four members, Olen would go back to the fire with the Fire Chief to try and figure out how the fires started. Olen also told us he started the first Little League at the lake. They sponsored their own team with Orange uniforms. In 1975 Seidler’s Photography opened, both Olen and Sally were well known for taking senior, family and wedding pictures. They expanded their business to meet the changing times. A Studio was added to their home to take photos in, and later “The Barn” was added. It was not a real barn just the style of a picture of an Indiana horse barn Olen had seen and wanted it to look like. It has two floors, is heated, lots of storage, and work space. The “Wedding Store” had tuxedo rentals, some wedding gowns rentals, invitations and everything else you needed for your wedding. They set up and ran many Bridal Shows though the years, at Peak n Peek, Cor- ry Motor Lodge, Sugar Grove, in Warren, and more. Olen also took stock car racing pictures, at Statesville, Lernerville, & Lake Erie Speedway. They still go to Lake Erie Speedway on Saturdays; he still has his photo pass. Olen went to help out when they first opened up the speedway, and never stopped. He still jumps in the cars to go out and pick up stuff with the guys. Their son was on the pit crew for Bobby Allison, Olen then started photographing NASCAR racing. He was given a NASCAR pass, and met many of the NASCAR drivers. They would leave on Thursdays for the weekend and did so up until about four or five years ago. Olen got to ride in the pace car for the start of the race at the Michigan International Raceway once toward the end of his career. They have a Football autographed by Jerry Glanville coach for the Houston Oilers; Jerry offered to fly Olen down to Houston for his operation when he heard he had cancer. Jerry was a member of the race car circuit and he called after Olen’s operation to check on him. Sally used to send Jerry cookies, he always looked for them. They smile and say “We made so many great friends on the race car circuit.” Olen was also politically involved in many community groups: Board/ Committee for the Union City High School when they built it; the Union City School Board; the Union City Senior Citizens Center, (is now the last one living that got it started it.); Chairman of New York Board of Governors of Photographers. Although Olen has always lived in Pennsylvania, he was very much involved with the Photographers Associations in New York. He was a member of SNAP – Southwestern New York Continued Page 15 Canadohta Lake BreezeSummer 2015Page 10 This article first appeared in The Breeze in 2012. This year C.L.A.B.A. is dedicating this years Breeze to an Icon of Canadohta Lake. All of you know her as the former owner of Sally’s Place on the Lake, the store she so capably managed for 29 years. She also owned three cottages - one beside her home on Lakeview Drive, the Polly Wog at the corner of Lakeview and Taylor Avenue, and the Mac located further up Taylor Avenue. Following the fire in the cottage next to her home, Sally extended her house onto that lot, and recently she sold both of the other cottages. Sally and her family came to Canadohta Lake in the early 1950’s. The Schramms previously spent time at Pymatuning Lake with Sally’s friend’s family and enjoyed that experience so much that they began looking for a summer retreat. The Schramms ended up at Canadohta Lake on someone’s recommendation. They rented a cottage at the north end of the lake, and as Sally and her mother took their walks along early Lakeview Drive, Mrs. Schramm fell in love with the lot upon which Sally’s home is now located. Raised in the Wilkinsburg area of Pittsburgh, Sally worked for Westinghouse Corporation and later for Jones & Laughlin Steel. She ran a kontometer machine for which she took specialized education. When she came to Canadohta Lake for the summers, Sally worked at the gift shop at Canadohta Lake Park, employed by Hope and Max Lee. Mr. Schramm was an insurance agent in the Pittsburgh area and would come up on weekends. When Bennett’s store came up for sale, Mr. Schramm purchased it and Sally’s Place on the Lake came into existence. Never ones to sit still, all of the Schramms kept bust. Sally and her mother ran the store, and Mr. Schramm used his many talents doing jobs for people at the lake. Mrs. Schramm was well-known for her fudge, and even after all these years, there are still people coming into the store and asking if that home-made fudge is still available. Sally was an excellent roller skater and competed in roller skating dance competitions at roller rinks at Canadohta Lake and Meadville. She also taught skating at both venues. Sally says, “I don’t think I wore the same costume twice. Every time I stepped into the roller rink I had a new costume. My mother used to sew them for me. She was an excellent seamstress.” She had a signature move while skating backwards that she taught to her students and allowed her to win her competitions. It was at the Canadohta Roller Rink that Hope Lee said to Bill Niggel, “There’s someone you should get to know.” Fifty-three years later they were married. Bill’s parents and Sally’s parents both wintered in the St. Petersburg area of Florida, and as it happened both families lived in the same trailer park. As the adage goes, “Be- hind every good woman there’s a good man,” Bill Niggel has been Sally’s strength and support throughout the years. Bill was raised in the Glenshaw area of Pittsburgh and was a draftsman. His family came to Canadohta Lake when Bill was still in elementary school. They rented a cottage on the hill in the Hawthorne-Elmwood area. A few years later he and his friends would camp on the south and west sides of the lake near Gossard’s and Smith’s stores. Later Bill’s brother was building a cottage at the intersection of Ridgewood Avenue and Circuit Drive, and Bill’s father built Canadohta Lake BreezeSummer 2015Page 11 the house on Ridgewood Avenue which Bill sold after his marriage to Sally in 2003. Bill is a Marine and served during the Second World War in the Pacific theater. He also worked with stained glass and his designs are legendary. He created the “Sally’s Place” sign which still hangs inside the front door of the establishment. These are wonderful people, the kind we would like to be. They have been faithful to their church, goods friends to all who know them and generous business persons in the community. Three generations of children have shopped at Sally’s Place, looking forward to the opening of the store in the spring when they could bring those carefully saved pennies, nickels and dimes to their haven for “penny” candy. So, Sally, C.L.A.B.A. salutes you and Bill for your contributions to the community and all the fond memories you have given us, our children and our grandchildren. Canadohta Lake BreezeSummer 2015Page 12 A low power FM (LPFM) radio station serving Canadohta Lake has been approved by the Federal Communications Commission. The radio station will broadcast on 105.7 FM and will have a coverage area between three and five miles from the station’s antenna, which will be located near Canadohta Lake on Ash St. An internet audio stream of the radio station is also in the planning stages. The radio station’s call letters are WUUK-LP. “In 2013, I learned the FCC was opening a rare filing window for LPFM radio station applications to non-profit groups,” said Brian Silvis, who started the local radio effort. “I knew we couldn’t let this opportunity slip by. The population of Canadohta Lake is not great enough to support a full power commercial radio station but a low power FM station is very feasible. Low power radio equipment is much smaller and less expensive than full power equipment.” On September 23, 2013 FM Radio Station Coming Soon the Canadohta Community Radio Group was formed as a Pennsylvania non-profit group to apply for the radio station construction permit and in 2014 the permit was approved by the FCC. The radio group plans to start broadcasting during the summer of 2015 if sufficient funding is secured. “There is a great need for a direct line of communication to residents and visitors of Canadohta Lake and this radio station will fill that need.” said Silvis, a part time Canadohta resident and former radio broadcaster. “The radio station will inform folks about events and activities at the lake; provide information from government offices and services in Bloomfield township; and educate the area on a variety of local issues. Weekend residents and visitors will have the ability to stream the radio station online while at home to learn about upcoming events so they are prepared when they get to the lake.” The radio station is non-commercial and non-profit which means funding to construct and operate the station must come from community support through fund raisers, donations, business underwriting and other sources. These are the same funding techniques used by public radio and public television stations like WQLN in Erie. “We are still in need of some funding,” said Silvis. “We only need to purchase the FM transmitter and antenna to complete the project. Once we have these items test broadcasting will begin immediately. Everything else is in place.” According to Silvis, music and entertainment options for the radio station have not been determined yet but the station does plan to offer a variety of community based programming. “Some things we have in mind are: coverage of local government meetings, broadcasts from area fund raising events, boat and water safety information, performances by local musicians and local church services. These activities will require resources such as equipment and labor so the programming will be dependent upon the level of support we receive from the community,” Silvis said. Tom Lavery, a Cochranton area resident and supporter of the radio station said, “As a Crawford County resident and one who has worked in both television and radio for 20 years, the news about a planned low power FM radio station that will serve Canadohta Lake is something that is long overdue. WUUKLP 105.7 FM will be a valuable resource that those living in the area and visitors will truly embrace for updated lake conditions as well as events going on in the area; not to mention great music that you may not hear elsewhere on the dial. It’s a great localized effort that I am glad to be a part of.” Local businesses can also benefit through the underwriting of programming on WUUKLP. Although advertisements are not permitted on LPFM radio stations, business contributors to the radio station will receive acknowledgments and other exposure on the FM broadcast and internet stream. There are also incentives available for individual Continued Page 16 Canadohta Lake BreezeSummer 2015Page 13 Bike Parade Canadohta Lake BreezeSummer 2015Page 14 boating and fishing on canadohta There are various laws and regulations dealing with fishing and boating in Pennsylvania. While a person should review the Fishing and Boating Summary books for more details or specific information, here are some helpful reminders of the more common regulations for anyone fishing or boating on Canadohta Lake: • A fishing license is required for anyone 16 years old or over to fish in PA. • Fish For Free Days for 2015 are May 24th (the Sunday before Memorial Day) and July 4th. A fishing license is not required on these days; however, all other regulations apply. Consult the Fishing Summary book for the seasons’ sizes and creel limits for specific fish. • Each person on board any boat must have a Coast Guard approved wearable, properly fitted personal floatation device (PFD), (aka life jacket/life preserver) on board. • Additionally, a throwable life preserver (seat cushion/ring buoy) is required on boats 16 feet and over. • Children 12-years-old and under on boats 20 feet and under in length must wear a life jacket while underway. • All motor boats (including electric motors) must be registered as a motor boat. • Non-powered boats (including paddle boards) using the PA Fish and Boat Commission access area must be registered as non-powered, OR have a PA Fish and Boat Commission use permit, OR have a DCNR launch permit. • Lights on all boats are required between sunset and sunrise. • A mechanical sound-producing device is required on all boats. An athletic whistle is acceptable. • Paddle boards are considered boats. Life jackets and a sound-producing device are required. • Fire extinguishers are required on boats: (1) that have closed compartments under thwarts and seats where portable fuel tanks may be stored; (2) double bottoms not sealed to the hull or which are not completely filled with floatation material; (3) closed stowage compartments in which combustible or flammable materials are stored; (4) permanently installed fuel tanks. • Water skiing/tubing requires at least three people: the operator of the boat, a competent person in the boat, and the person being towed who is required to wear a life jacket. • Motors on boats at Canadohta Lake are limited to 10 horsepower or less. • On pontoon boats, no matter if going as slow as the boat can go, or as fast as the boat can go, no one is permitted to be on the bow outside the passenger carrying area (the tall railing). • Unless travelling as slow as the boat can go (slow, no wake speed), stay at least 100 feet away from docks, shoreline, swimmers, anchored or drifting boats, and floats. • Last, but certainly not least, while alcohol is permitted on boats at Canadohta Lake, the oper- ator of the boat cannot be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Please have a designated driver. Hopefully this information will be helpful. Again, please refer to the Fishing and Boating Summary books. If you see me or any other officers on the lake, please feel free to call us over if you have any questions. Have a fun and safe summer. Respectfully, Terry Crecraft Waterways Conservation Officer Canadohta Lake BreezeSummer 2015Page 15 Canadohta Lake Lawn Tractor Race By: Ellie Baranyai Luba Donnell Canadohta Lake has many neighborhoods, where neighbors are like family. They all get together often, and create their own fun. I have been fortunate enough to have lived in one. Boy, the stories I can tell and the ones I will not. Labor Day weekend 2014 was the First Annual Canadohta Lake Lawn Tractor Race among the neighbors in the Glenridge Dr. & Second Ave. area. The idea was the brainstorm of Barkley Loughran. Barkley & Kim Loughran were the officials, and clocked the time of each contestant. Many other neighbors and friends were in attendance to cheer them on and a couple photographers were present to document the occasion. As always fun was had by all! Simple rules – Had to be an unmodified lawn tractor that had the mowing deck attached. One Pace lap following the pace car (aka golf cart) driven by Bob Kelly, then one lap around the block. Contestants were Bill Altman, Jim Donnell, Judy Kelly, John Leute, Jim Myers, Tony Vitril, and Tom Wilson. The 2014 winner was Jim Myers, he received the Wooden Tractor Trophy to sign and hold until the next race. Summer Love Continued... Association of Professional Photographers. In 1977 he was elected the president of SNAP (his PA license plate is “SNAP1”). He had applied with the Pennsylvania Photographers Association; however they would not take him because he didn’t make 100% of his income from photography. Olen was a delegate for two years; he then went through all the chairs in a five year span. He became the first photographer from Pennsylvania to become President of the State of New York Professional Photographer Society in the history of New York. Olen served as Chairman of the Board on its Board of Governor’s for nine years, he still attends the conventions, but not as an officer anymore. Olen is very proud that he has received the National Title – he is the only photographer in Union City that has ever received the award issued from New York Photographers Association. He has won every honor they have and has a wall full of plaques; they have both received National Awards. Sally ran quite a few conventions for the officers as their chairman; she had a friend that helped with all the planning, decorating, and menu selections. Most the banquets were held in the Catskills they were big back then, 500 or more people would stay and they would maybe have over 1000 during the day, Now with modern technology things have changed so much they are small maybe 50 people or so. They both have said that “New York has treated us well”, Olen said ”He has had a good life, and is contented”. He has recently taken his long overdue retirement. When asked about their memories of Canadohta Lake they said: They remembered Bartlett’s Donuts and pottery at the bottom of Mable Street on the Lakefront to the left of Ruggles Park, going to Wallworths’s (Ethel’s Lakeview Inn) on the other side of Ruggles Park, the garbage man that came in a horse drawn wagon to pick up the trash at the cottages, a guy with a horse and wagon selling sweet corn, onions and other produce, there was a woman who baked pies, cookies, and cakes and drove around the lake selling them to people in the cottages. The ice wagon came with ice everyone had “Ice Boxes” back then, the old cement Ice House (still there as a cottage) at the bottom of the hill on Circuit Dr., when Max Lee built the first Miniature Golf Course of the Lake at the Park, the Park’s Amusement Rides, Swimming at Ruggles Park Beach, Woods Bicycle Rentals, Pop Cornish on his tractor whistling away every morning, and how good Cornish’s sweet corn was. Sally remembered after supper going to Marcresan Beach to get a Sundae or a Milkshake, playing Bingo at the Bingo Hall, said she feels bad that it’s not the lake it used to be there is not much like that to do here now. Seeing how the lake has changed over the years – there was just a handful of winter residents, and now you go around the lake and every other place is year round. Many businesses have come and gone. Sally remembers Harry Newland sold off all of the Park’s memorabilia and rides and then the park itself. Thank You Olen and Sally for sharing your life with us, and all you have done for the Canadohta Lake area community. Canadohta Lake BreezeSummer 2015Page 16 By Ann Bergheim It’s hard to believe, but another fun summer has arrived! We’ve already had our Easter Egg Hunt this year and had a tremendous turnout. Thank you everyone for braving the frigid temperatures and collecting over three thousand candy filled eggs! Our next event will be our Community Fun Day on June 28, 2015 from 1-5 pm at the township ball fields. We will have most of our usual activities which include our inflatable bouncy house and other surprises. We’ll also have pony rides, Granny’s Ark and a great selection of fun activities on that day. Stop down to visit and enjoy the day with our friends and neighbors here at the lake. July 4th we will be decorating bikes in true style with our usual patriotic theme for our annual Bike Parade. It sets off from Elmwood Park (free beach) at 11 am. Please make sure you get there a bit early for the lineup and yes, the whistles. Parents are welcome to bring their earplugs! We will be escorted by the Bloomfield Volunteer Firefighters and our Canadohta Lake Queens as we continue down Circuit Drive to the Frog Pond Pavilions where the participants can enter the drawing for free bikes and enjoy lunch with us. Hope to see you all there. Our other events will include our Annual Pumpkin Hunt the week before Halloween and Cookies with Santa which happens at the beginning of December. Thank you all for coming to our events and a big shout out to the great volunteers who manage to put on wonderful events for large crowds each time. We are always happy to have new faces who’d like to help out and even serve on the Recreation Board. Feel free to stop by our meetings on the second Wednesday of the month at 6:30 in the Bloomfield Township all purpose room at the fire hall/township office. Have a fantastic time making memories at the lake this summer with us! contributors. Details and instructions for donating to the effort can be found on the radio group’s web site: www. CanadohtaRadio.org. According to Silvis there are about 1,000 LPFM radio stations operating in the United States as a result of the first filing window in 2000. About 1,000 more are expected to go live in the coming months from the 2013 filing window. Two LPFM radio stations are currently operating nearby. WXCS-LP in Cambridge Springs, which broadcasts on 92.9 FM, offers bluegrass and blues music as well as other community programming. WFSN-LP in Union City broadcasts on 96.7 FM and features children’s programming, high school sports and other community programming. The current board members of the Canadohta Community Radio Group are: Brian Silvis, president; Patricia Keys, vice-president; and Brian Blair, treasurer. For questions or to do- nate, email Silvis at [email protected] or call 814-732-0759. Full details about this project are available on the radio group’s web site: www.CanadohtaRadio. org. “If, for some reason, we don’t get the radio station on the air by July 15 we will need to apply for an extension from the FCC. The criteria for approving extensions remains unclear so we are pushing to beat the deadline and not have to worry about that,” Silvis said. Permits are NOT required for routine maintenance or small repairs including roofing, siding and window/door replacement, as long as no change is made to the building’s structure. Zoning permits – Required before any construction can be done. After applying for this permit the Zoning Officer will come out to your site, inspect the area and let you know of any set-back requirements and/or restrictions. Building permits – Required for any new construction and all remodeling that changes the structure of a building. They are also required for any home additions, decks and storage buildings. An inspector will visit the site through different stages of construction to inspect that proper procedures are being followed. Septic Permits – This permit is required for all property NOT on the Township Sewage Lines. Before doing any new construction, you must first acquire this permit. In addition to Bloomfield Township Building requirements, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), PA Department of Labor and Industry and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have established new policies and procedures for construction and renovations in flood plain areas. What do these changes mean for residents of Bloomfield Township? The following policies and procedures may affect you: Flood Plain Management: If you have a mortgage on your property and you are in the flood plain area of Bloomfield Township (lake, inlet, stream) your mortgage holder will require you to carry flood insurance. How do you know if you are in the flood plain?? If, after a storm, you can’t tell where the lake ends and your yard begins; you might be in the flood plain. If ducks call your yard their summer home; you might be in the flood plain. If you need a boat to get to your car; you might be in the flood plain. But seriously, if you are on the water’s edge, you are in the flood plain. The distance away from the water’s edge varies by area. Living in the flood plain also affects your ability to do any new construction. Check with our office to see if you are in the flood plain. There are currently over 320 homes/cottages and 5 commercial businesses in the flood zone areas of Bloomfield Township. Flood Plain Permit: Anyone wishing to do any work on property in the flood plain MUST first obtain this permit in addition to the zoning and building permits listed above. Please note that any changes to the building’s structure will require engineer/ architect drawings and seals. Storm Water Management: Require property owners who are constructing new homes or buildings create a holding area (tank or water garden) which will collect storm/rain water allowing the water to slowly seep into the earth instead of running across it and into neighboring property or the lake. It is a good idea for everyone to try to control the run off of rain water from their property. Consider installing a rain barrel, or creating a water garden.
