Following the directions from the Building a Community of Writers resource book,
give each child a piece of drawing paper.

Tell children you will read a sentence to them, and ask them to draw the picture that
comes to mind when they hear the words. Say, The red bird was perched on the head
of the smiling snowman while two spotted rabbits scampered below.

Write the sentence on sentence strips, and display it with children's work on a board
titled Scenes from a Snowy Day.
